Gujarat Doubles Compensation for Accidental Death of Farmers; Expands Ambit of Insurance Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government on Thursday decided to double the compensation amount covered under the Farmers Accident Insurance Scheme from the existing Rs 1 lakh to 2 lakh in case of accidental deaths and Rs 1 lakh, against Rs 50,000 for grievous

injuries. The announcement comes after constant criticism from the opposition over the issue of farm loan waivers. The Farmers Accident Insurance Scheme, which was originally launched in 1996, has also been modified to include the immediate family members of

farmers. Earlier, only the farmer or the members whose names were there in land records were eligible for the scheme. Now, instead of 73.25 crore beneficiaries, as many as 2.49 crore people will be eligible for the benefits. While addressing the media on Thursday, Deputy

The BSP supremo said, “Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) has decided to contest upcoming assembly polls in alliance with Janta Congress Chhattisgarh.

Chief Minister Nitin Patel said, “Farmers and their families constitute about 2.49 crore of the total 6.25 crore population of Gujarat. The government has decided to double the amount of compensation for both accidental deaths as well as permanent disability.”

‘This does not indicate any change in our policy towards Pakistan,’ Raveesh Kumar said.

BSP chief Mayawati allies with Ajit Jogi’s India-Pak foreign ministers to meet in Janta Congress ahead of Chhattisgarh polls New York: MEA after Imran Khan letter New Delhi : In a blow to the Congress in Chhattisgarh, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Thursday announced that her party will contest the upcoming state elections in alliance with Ajit Jogi’s Janta Congress. According to the seat-sharing agreement, Mayawati said, the BSP will contest 35 seats and Janata Congress 55 seats. The BSP supremo said, “Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) has decided to contest upcoming assembly polls in alliance with Janta Congress Chhattisgarh. BSP will fight on 35 seats and Janta Congress Chhattisgarh will contest on 55 seats. If we win, Ajit Jogi will be the CM.” The Congress and BSP had been in talks with each other for a few months but Mayawati was not happy with the number of seats it was being offered. The party was hoping an alliance with the BSP would help them win a majority of the 10 reserved assembly

seats in the state. The BJP currently holds nine of them. With the BSP’s decision to ally with Jogi’s party, the elections will now see a three-cornered contest. Speaking about the newly-formed coalition, Janta Congress leader Ajit Jogi said, “BJP has been in power in Chhattisgarh for past 15 years. Satta ka durupyog, paise ka durupyog, prashasnik tantra ka durupoyog karke woh phir se satta mein aana chahti hai.

Country’s chowkidaar a thief: Rahul again attacks PM Modi on Rafale

Dungarpur: In a no-holdsbarred attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi Thursday said people are now heard saying the country’s “watchman” is a “thief”. Gandhi’s remark at a public meeting provoked a strong reaction from the BJP with Union minister Smriti Irani calling him the “clown prince” who had no respect for the prime minister’s post. Rahul Gandhi was referring to the prime minister’s “silence” on the Rafale fighter aircraft deal with France and the Modi government’s “failure” to bring fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya to book. He said he had asked questions on this in Parliament but got no reply, and took a jibe at Modi’s past assertions on tackling corruption. Modi had said he did not want to become the country’s prime minister, but its ‘chowkidar’ (watchman),

Gandhi recalled. He added now it is heard on the streets that the country’s ‘chowkidar’ is a thief. “Galli galli mein shor hai, Hindustan ka chowkidar chor hai,” he said in Hindi at a rally in tribal-dominated Sagwara. He said this is what the people in Rajasthan and elsewhere in the country felt. Assembly elections will be held in the state later this year, shortly ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. Gandhi said people are disappointed with the Bharatiya Janata Party governments at the Centre and in Rajasthan and the Congress is now set to win. “Neither the prime minister and the chief minister, nor their money can stop the change of government in Rajasthan,” he said. Referring to a recent row, Gandhi claimed Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had “admitted” that Vijay Mallya met him before leaving the country.

New Delhi: India and Pakistan foreign ministers will meet next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the government said on Thursday. “I can confirm that on the request of the Pakistani side, a meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi will take place on the sidelines of UNGA at a mutually convenient date and time,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told the media in New Delhi. The MEA spokesperson further said that it will “just be a meeting, not talks or resumption of dialogue.” “We have not finalised the agenda for

the meeting,” Raveesh Kumar said. “This does not indicate any change in our policy towards Pakistan,” Raveesh Kumar said. The government said that the date for the meeting of both the foreign ministers (Sushma Swaraj and Shah Mahmood Qureshi) is being finalised by permanent missions of the two countries in New York. Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan had written to PM Modi asking that India and Pakistan resume dialogue that has been suspended since 2015. The newlyelect Pakistan PM also suggested a meeting between the foreign ministers and said Pakistan “remains ready” to discuss terrorism.

‘Clown Prince’ Rahul Gandhi leading campaign of falsehood: Arun Jaitley

New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today called Rahul Gandhi ‘Clown Prince’ and accused him of spreading falsehood in connection with the Rafale deal and waiving loans given to 15 industrialists. Jaitley said that the Congress president is leading a campaign of falsehood on the Rafale deal. “His strategy is simple – concoct a lie and repeat it as many times,” he wrote in his Facebook blog titled ‘Falsehood of a ‘Clown Prince’’. The finance minister also said, “By repeating a lie on several occasions, you can’t change that reality. Not a single rupee of any debtor has been waived.” Jaitley further alleged that the Congress leaders lied over the amount of Non Performing Assets (NPAs). “Today the UPA

leaders stated that when they went out of Government, the NonPerforming Assets (NPAs) were only Rs 2.5 lakh crores. The truth is that actually NPAs were hidden under the carpet. In 2015, an asset quality review was conducted by

No mechanism to enforce legal provisions on reporting of sex abuse cases: SC

New Delhi: There is “no mechanism” to enforce and implement legal provisions and guidelines on media reporting on rape and sexual abuse cases, the Supreme Court said Thursday while calling for a balance between the criminal justice system and freedom of the press. A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta, which observed that there cannot be a blanket ban on media reporting of such cases, was told that guidelines and statutory provisions were being “routinely violated” as the press was doing “media trial” The bench, in the “interest of all victims of sexual abuse and sexual violence”, restrained

the electronic media from telecasting or broadcasting their images in a morphed or blurred form. It also asked the media not to interview such victims and said the news of the events may be broadcast by the media keeping in mind the interest of the victims, which should be of concern. “We also request the print media and the electronic media not to sensationalize such events,” it said and posted the matter for hearing on October 4. The US-China trade war is about more than trade

Last November, when US President Donald Trump stopped by China on his Asia tour, his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping suggested that “win-win cooperation is the only right choice and the pathway toward a better future” for the two countries. Ten months on, there isn’t a lot of cooperation going on. And with the latest round of tariffs and counter-tariffs announced this week, it will be a while yet before the dust settles enough to see if either country has done much winning. For now, markets in both countries have shrugged off the tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports imposed by Washington and Beijing’s retaliatory 5% and 10% tariffs on $60 billion of American goods. Given that this round of Trump’s tariffs has been gestating for a while, much of the risk was already priced in. Indeed, with both sides going for lower rates than their original threats of slapping a 25% tariff, the ‘it could have been worse’ factor is in play. And with the White House announcing that the tariffs will be kicked up to 25% in January if no deal is struck, uncertainty—markets’ kryptonite—regarding what a volatile Trump might do next has been taken out of the equation. That window of time, along with the caution showed by both administrations in starting with lower rates, has perhaps given investors the hope that a modus vivendi is possible. How realistic that hope is—at least in the short term—is debatable. The Trump administration is betting on Beijing’s caving under the pressure of the tariffs at a time when domestic demand and capex in China are slowing. It is perhaps being optimistic. As the Financial Times notes, China’s direct exposure to the tariffs is limited to 4% of its gross domestic product. The bulk of this exposure is borne by privately owned companies. China’s private sector is the poor cousin in its economic landscape; its complaints in recent years of the numerous advantages afforded to state-owned enterprises (SOEs) ring true. Thus, if the tariffs further entrench the dominance of Chinese SOEs and incentivize devaluation of the renminbi to keep exports competitive, they will accomplish precisely the opposite of their intended effect. There is another broader issue at play here as well. Beijing sees the Trump administration’s actions as a version of a containment policy rather than in purely trade terms. It is not wrong. Trade hawks in the Trump administration such as US trade representative Robert Lightizer and policy adviser on trade and manufacturing Peter Navarro perceive China to be an existential economic threat. The “Made in China 2025” initiative—which aims to use industrial policy to create national champions in bleeding edge sectors such as artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles—is a particularly sore point, for instance.

With Batti Gul Meter Chalu audience will realise the gravity of the issue: Yami

Mumbai : Actor Yami Gautam, who stars in Batti Gul Meter Chalu, says it is neither necessary nor possible for an actor to do issue-based films all the time. Yami was interacting with the media here on Wednesday at a promotional press conference of the film that releases on Friday. She was at the event with her coactors Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. On the trend in Bollywood where films have been putting out a message, Yami was asked whether it was a safe bet as it was working for many actors. When the audience will see this film, they will realise the gravity of this issue because normally we discuss it and then we move on, but I think cinema is such a strong medium which enables people to start a dialogue among themselves.

They were quite out of the box. I would like to believe that the choices I am making are purely on how I react toa story.”

Tim Paine said he will need to use his fast bowlers in short spells in the test series against Pakistan if they are to defy hard, slow pitches and high temperatures in the UAE.

Tim Paine wary of overworking Aussie pace battery against Pakistan

New Delhi : Australia captain Tim Paine said he will need to use his fast bowlers in short spells in the test series against Pakistan if they are to defy hard, slow pitches and high temperatures in the United Arab Emirates. With injuries to regular fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, Australia have included a uncapped duo Brendan Doggett and Michael Neser in their squad and recalled veteran Peter Siddle for the two-match series next month. “It’s going to be over 40 degrees and really high humidity so we’re going to have to be clever about how we use our bowlers,” Paine told reporters. Australia have not won a test series in Asia since 2011 and their success this

time could depend on left-arm quick Mitchell Starc, who picked up 24 wickets in Sri Lanka in 2016. The 28-yearold will return to action from a foot stress injury and Paine has hinted going a little off script to bring the best out of his trump card in grinding conditions. “I expect him to be bowling short spells and as fast as he can,” Paine added. “We’re hopeful – no, we’re sure – Starcy will have a really big series, and if he does, it will go a long way towards winning it for us.” Pakistan has hosted most of its international matches in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah since 2009 when a gun and grenade attack injured six Sri Lankan players in Lahore, while killing eight Pakistanis.

The celebrations after securing the country’s second highest sporting honour were subdued as Manika Batra’s childhood coach missed out on the Dronacharya award for the second time.

Arjuna awardee Manika Batra has mixed feelings as coach ignored for Dronacharya New Delhi : An Arjuna award for her historic achievements has made Manika Batra happy but only just, as she says the Dronacharya snub to her coach Sandeep Gupta has been a dampener. The celebrations after securing the country’s second highest sporting honour were subdued as her childhood coach Gupta missed out on the Dronacharya award for the second time. “Yes I wanted him to get the award. But it is the government’s decision and we have to respect that. I will work harder so he gets it next time,” Manika told PTI after being named as a sponsored athlete of Herbalife Nutrition here on Thursday. “It’s a case of being partially happy for her,” said her mother Sushma. Manika, who is the first Indian woman to win a Commonwealth Games gold and

an Asian Games bronze, was also in the running for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. “I was expecting that (Khel Ratna) but there were other deserving athletes. It is fine. I will continue to strive for it,” said the 23-year-old. While her coach was overlooked for Dronacharya, another deserving candidate , Srinivasa Rao, father of India’s finest A Sharath Kamal,

got the selection committee’s nod. Rao is among the eight coaches who will be bestowed with Dronacharya on September 25. Manika’s coach Gupta was obviously disappointed with the snub. “I have no issues as long as any deserving coach gets the award. My problem is with the number of Dronacharya awardees every year.

6, according to a finance ministry statement. The sharp revision in exchange rate comes in the backdrop of nearly 13 per cent depreciation in the Rupee since the beginning of the year. The rupee had collapsed to a historic intra-day low of 72.99 against the US dollar on Tuesday. The conversion rate for computation of duty on export of goods has been fixed at Rs 71.95 to a dollar, Rs 94.05 to Pound Sterling, and Rs 83.45 to Euro.

Sydney : The last time India faced Bangladesh in a cricket match, it took a heroic effort from Dinesh Karthik to save the match for Men in Blue. The side led by skipper Rohit Sharma almost saw a massive upset before Karthik scored 8-ball 29 to take India to a thrilling final-ball victory. That is in the past – but as the two teams gear up to face each other once again in the Asia Cup, India will keep in mind that Bangladesh has a penchant to turn “party-poopers”. It was not the first time Bangladesh had almost caused India an upset. The same thing happened between the two teams in the 2016 T20 World Cup. But India somehow scraped through in the final ball

that time as well. After cruising through a victory in the crucial clash against Pakistan, skipper Rohit Sharma would feel confident going into the match against Bangladesh. But at the same time, he would want to tread cautiously as well. Especially with a few too many changes in the squad. The fact that India have played regular cricket this year has finally started to have repercussions. Allrounder Hardik Pandya, who played in all three formats in England, picked up a lower back injury in his first game in the Asia Cup. Deepak Chahar called in as the replacement. Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur also dropped due to injuries.

acquisition of Essar Steel

New Delhi: The C o m p e t i t i o n Commission has approved the acquisition of debt-ridden Essar Steel by a consortium of ArcelorMittal and Japan’s Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation. Earlier this month, ArcelorMittal had offered Rs 42,000 crore to acquire Essar Steel, upstaging a Rs 37,000 crore bid by Russia’s VTB Group-backed Numetal. ArcelorMittal and Numetal are in the race to acquire Essar Steel, currently undergoing insolvency proceedings as it owes more than Rs 45,000 crore to over 30 banks. “@CCI_India finds no

appreciable adverse effect on competition in respect of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal’s proposed acquisition of Essar Steel,” the fair trade regulator said in a tweet on Thursday. Deals beyond a certain threshold are required to get clearance from the Competition Commission of India (CCI). According

to the notice submitted to the CCI, the proposed combination is pursuant to a resolution plan filed by ArcelorMittal India before the resolution professional for the acquisition of Essar Steel in accordance with the provisions of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. BoB, Vijaya Bank, Dena Bank merger may cause short-term spurt in bad assets Mumbai: The merger of Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank by the government poses short-term challenges like spurt in bad assets, but will be beneficial over a longer term, a report said on Thursday. Slippages may increase in the short-term as recognition of nonperforming assets is harmonised and accelerated, India Ratings said in a note. Stating that it may take appropriate rating actions after the merger proposed earlier this week gets a formal approval, it said the combined entity will require “significant bandwidth”

over PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday but the bigger surprise was the performance of Dembele. The Frenchman has enjoyed a superb start to the season and has already matched his goal tally from the whole of the last campaign by scoring five times in six games. With his last campaign marred by injury problems and struggles to adapt to his new surroundings after a big-money move from Borussia Dortmund, Dembele has been playing with renewed confidence and is having a huge impact this term. The Frenchman’s bursts of pace and his ability to dance past defenders have given Barca an outlet they have lacked since the departure of Neymar to Paris St Germain last year.

While some concerns remain about Barca’s away performances, following scrappy wins at Real Valladolid and Real Sociedad, Ernesto Valverde’s side have been frighteningly good at home this season, scoring 15 goals in three games at the Nou Camp. Messi and Dembele have been the architects of their dominance. Messi typically hogged the headlines after scoring a record eighth Champions League hat-trick in a 4-0 win

The asset-liability mismatch issues at smaller banks (Vijaya

and Dena) can be better addressed at the consolidated level, it said. A successful merger can also impact the capital requirements for the government as internal accruals can go up with efficiencies, it said, pointing out that this may act as a roadmap for further consolidations in the public sector banking space. The product offerings of the three banks are “largely homogeneous” and 50 per cent of the combined entity advances are to the corporate segment, followed by 25 per cent to retail. The combined entity’s 16 per

cent branches are in the top 12 banked districts of the country (which account for 42 per cent of deposits and 55 per cent of advances). There is a “moderate” scope to decrease branches in Mumbai, Thane, Ahmedabad and Pune, while Gurugram and Chennai offer a “limited scope” for branch consolidation. However, there is significant scope of branch rationalisation in Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, it said, adding that 65 per cent of the combined entity’s branches are concentrated in these states.

be undertaken through multiple steps, which will be taken after and subject to obtaining requisite approvals of the Committee of Creditors and the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLAT) under the Code, as per the notice. ArcelorMittal India is an arm of ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company with a presence in 60 countries and an industrial footprint in 18 nations. In a separate tweet on Thursday, the CCI said it “finds no appreciable adverse effect on competition in respect of JSW Steel’s proposed acquisition of Bhushan Power & Steel”.

Preventive vigilance better governance tool for public institutions: Urjit Patel

New Delhi: RBI Governor Urjit Patel said on Thursday that preventive vigilance can be used as an effective tool of governance in public sector institutions, arguing that punitive vigilance may not yield the desired result. Patel was speaking at a conference at the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) here on ‘Preventive Vigilance – The Key Tool of Good Governance at Public Sector Institutions’. Patel said ‘preventive vigilance is aimed at reducing the occurrence of a lapse

(violation of a law, a norm, or, broadly speaking, a governance requirement), while punitive vigilance seeks to deterring the occurrence of a lapse. He said that punitive vigilance is difficult in a public sector institution for several reasons, adding the rewards are low to start with, thereby limiting the possibility of downward revisions. Given this constraint, Patel said disciplinary actions that limit the chances of career progression are often the preferred punishment.

IT Ministry mulls third notice to WhatsApp; may insist on message traceability

New Delhi: The IT ministry is mulling sending a third notice to WhatsApp asserting that it bring in ‘traceability’ of messages on its platform, even as the American firm has maintained that doing so will impact end-to-end encryption and violate privacy of users. According to government sources, an internal discussion was held on the issue and a third letter could now be sent to WhatsApp in the next 7-10 days. The IT ministry feels that technical solutions can be found to trace the originator of a message, without actually compromising end-to-end encryption, said a government official, who did not wish to be named. Citing examples of potential technical solutions that could be brought to the table, the official said traceability can be brought

in for a message that has been forwarded to, say, a high number of users within a short span of time. This will not not entail “looking into the content of the message” but simply identifying the originator of such a message that has gone viral and crossed a certain threshold, the official added. Following multiple incidents of mob-lynching across the country -- incited by fake news circulated on WhatsApp -- the government had asked WhatsApp to look for ways to track the original sender of such provocative and nefarious messages. WhatsApp was already been slapped with two notices, with the second one warning that it will be liable to be treated as ‘abettors’ and can face legal consequences if it remains “mute spectators”.

Gujarat HC stays ban on Vijay Rupani govt stonewalls livestock export at Tuna port Congress’ No-confidence motion in

Rajkot : In a relief to livestock exporters, the Gujarat High Court has stayed the August 6 order of Kutch District Magistrate Remya Mohan, prohibiting the movement of livestock at Tuna port after complaints of alleged violations of legal provisions and animal rights. A single judge bench of Justice Bela Trivedi issued an oral order on Tuesday, staying the DM’s order till the pendency of a petition filed by Livestock Exporters Association (LEA), an unregistered body of livestock exporters of Gujarat. The court also observed that the opinion of a committee formed by the DM regarding prohibition of exports of livestock from Tuna port lacked the authority of law. “It appears that the committee constituted by the District Magistrate has

submitted a report on 07.08.2018, whereby it has been opined inter alia that the violation of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act might have occurred. It has been further stated that ‘no animals shall be allowed to be exported unless the necessary documents are provided and required arrangement for the welfare of these animals are done by the exporters’.” The later part of the direction given by the committee appears to be prima facie without any authority of law. Hence the implementation of the impugned communication dated 6.08.2018 has stayed till the pendency of the present petition,” Justice Trivedi stated. Livestock exporters had brought 7,850 goats and sheep to Tuna port in the first week of August for exporting them to Dubai.

Gandhinagar : The two-day Monsoon Session of Gujarat Assembly ended in chaos as Congress MLAs walked out of the House on Wednesday evening after the BJP government refused to hold a discussion on the no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition. Soon after the Question Hour, Deputy Leader of Opposition Shailesh Parmar tabled the motion and it was admitted by Speaker Rajendra Trivedi since it had the support of more than 17 MLAs, as required by the rules. Immediately Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel objected to it, saying that the Opposition must give a notice for tabling such a motion at least three days in advance and not more than seven working days of the Assembly. Patel said that the current session of the House was for only two

days, and the request to table such a motion was given “just today”. The Congress could not table the motion on Tuesday — the first day of the two-day session — as the House was adjourned soon after paying tribute to former members of the House and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who passed away in the intermittent period between the budget and the monsoon sessions. In its notice for the no-confidence motion against the BJP government, the Congress cited issues of farmers, rising cost of education, inflation and corruption as the reasons. The government did not offer a loan waiver to farmers, did not ensure irrigation and offer good support prices for crops, the Opposition party said in the notice.

Theresa May appeals to EU leaders but no sign of Brexit deal

Salzburg : Prime Minister Theresa May appealed directly to fellow European Union leaders on Wednesday to drop “unacceptable” Brexit demands that she said could rip Britain apart, urging the bloc to respond in kind to her “serious and workable” plan. They listened politely for a few minutes but said afterwards that a stalemate on the Irish border was unbroken — though some EU diplomats detected a cracking of ice around the spectacular summit dinner table, laid in the Salzburg theatre used to film a dramatic escape finale in the film “The Sound of Music”. Earlier, EU officials insisted May had to give more ground. After Wiener schnitzel and four hours of wrangling over Europe’s migrant problem, May was given the floor and tried to win over her 27 peers by effectively asking them what they would do if they were asked to agree a “legal separation” of their countries — something she says the EU is asking for by insisting Northern Ireland might stay under EU economic rules.

secretary of the forest and environment department Dr Rajiv Kumar Gupta said the state government has ordered an inquiry which would be conducted by the principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife). “Primary information shows that eight deaths have occurred due to infighting. For the rest three, post-mortem

reports are awaited,” Gupta added. PCCF wildlife AK Saxena, who rushed to the Gir forest, said most of the deaths were due to infighting and resultant injuries. “Most of the deaths are due to infighting and injuries caused thereby, mainly affecting cubs and females. This trend is being noticed over a period of three to four years. No foul play or suspicion is suspected,” Saxena said. As per the 2015 census, Gir is home to 520 lions. Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani said on Thursday that a probe must be conducted to see if the deaths occurred due to electrocution, poisoning or poaching.

Jerusalem : Israel’s air force chief will on Thursday present findings in Moscow related to an incident in which a Russian military plane was downed off Syria’s coast, Israel’s military said. Israel on Tuesday blamed Syria, saying its antiaircraft batteries “fired indiscriminately” and failed to ensure that no Russian planes were in the air. The army said Major-General Amikam Norkin and other senior officers would “present the situation report of the event regarding all aspects, including the pre-mission information and the findings of the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) inquiry.” The incident initially appeared likely to cause friction between two countries that back opposing sides in Syria’s complex civil war, with the head of the defence ministry in Moscow accusing Israel of indirectly causing it. But President Vladimir Putin, who spoke to his Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone on Tuesday, then called it “a chain of tragic chance events” although he added that Russia needed to “seriously get to the bottom of what happened”. Israel’s military said on Tuesday its fighter jets had targeted a Syrian facility it said was about to transfer weapons to Hezbollah on behalf of Iran, and that when the plane was downed.
