India’s entry into elite nuclear groups reaffirms its ‘non-proliferation commitments’: PM Modi New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that India’s entry into elite nuclear groups in the recent past has reaffirmed the country’s strict non-proliferation commitments. His remarks comes a day after India became a member of the ‘Australia Group’ (AG), an important non-proliferation regime which seeks to ensure that exports do not contribute to the development of chemical or biological weapons. “I thank Australia and other members of the Australia Group for export control for supporting India’s entry in it,” PM Modi tweeted. He said over the last two years, India’s membership of the MTCR, Wassenaar Arrangement and Australia Group reaffirmed the country’s “strong non-proliferation credentials also our commitment to global peace and security”. SC bench headed by CJI Dipak Misra to hear Judge Loya case on Monday gns, New Delhi : A threejudge bench headed by the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud will hear on Monday two petitions demanding independent probe into the death of CBI Special Judge B H Loya. The supplementary cause list of the court which was put out on Saturday shows the two petitions numbered as item numbers 45 and 45.1. On Friday, the Court had decided to assign the two petitions for hearing as per the court roster. The petitions were mentioned before a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India which ordered, “on mentioning,

the matter is taken on Board. List the matters on January 22, 2018, before the appropriate Bench as per the roster”. Earlier on January 16, the matter was heard by a two-judge bench of Justices Arun Mishra and Mohan M Shantanagoudar which adjourned the matter by a week without fixing any date to hear it.

Mama Qadeer said, “It (Pakistan) has produced Hafiz Saeed, (Syed) Salahuddin and Mullah Omar, an Iranian Baloch, who is behind the arrest of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav from Chabahar in Iran. Kulhushan Jadhav was doing business in Iran and he was trapped at the behest of Pakistan’s ISI on charges of spying in Balochistan.” He said, “Mullah Omar accepted the deal as Pakistan and Iran shares border and both sides of the border has Baloch population.

The written order which came out late in the evening showed that the judges had also ordered that the matters be “put up before the appropriate bench.” This raised doubts whether the judges had recused from hearing the matter. Four senior Supreme Court judges — Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph — had in a press conference last week cited the assignment of the Loya case as one of the reasons for their differences with the CJI. AAP accuses EC of ‘discrimination’ after it recommends disqualification of its 20 MLAs gns, New Delhi : Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday accused the Election Commission of ‘discrimination’ and said the poll panel had no right to recommend disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs in ‘Office of Profit’ case as the Delhi High Court had said they are not Parliamentary secretaries. Addressing a press conference, AAP national spokesperson Sanjay Singh asked, “How could the Election Commission recommend disqualification of the 20 AAP MLA as the Delhi High Court had said they are not Parliamentary

Secretaries?” “In other states, wherever the Parliamentary Secretaries were appointed, they were given the status of minister of state and all facilities were given to them. However, this was not what happened in Delhi, even then discrimination is happening with us,” he

SC’s Padmaavat ruling is welcome, now enforce it

The Supreme Court acted strongly on Thursday in staying the notifications issued by the Rajasthan and Gujarat governments to prevent the release of the film Padmaavat, which has fallen foul of a Rajasthan-based caste outfit that has projected itself as an upholder of Rajput traditions and history as perceived by it. The court rightly spoke in terms of protecting the freedom of expression. However, it’s far from certain that these two state governments, as well as Madhya Pradesh, whose BJP government had taken a comparable stance, appreciate the meaning of the Supreme Court’s order or are inclined to follow it in letter and spirit. The Haryana government, also run by the BJP, had initially taken the same view on not permitting release of the film in the state as the other BJP-ruled states, but appears to have modified its stand in view of the court’s order. This is forwardlooking. But even in Haryana it’s not certain that the film’s inaugural screening will take place on January 25 as planned. This is due to the threat of violence that may deter cinemas. Indeed, this factor appears to loom larger in some of the other states under the BJP’s administration. The casteinspired groups give every indication that they will take active steps to ensure that an “unofficial ban” of the film is implemented. This is indeed worrying. It is regrettable that the chief ministers of the states in question are holding back from showing respect for the rule of law and upholding high constitutional values. Officially, these states have only said that they will study the order and then see what they will do. This is regressive. To begin with, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana were wrong in adopting the attitude they did once the Central Board of Film Certification, a statutory body, had cleared the film with some changes. These changes were brought about to placate the so-called caste sentiments, although the opponents of the film had made dire threatening observations against the producers, director and the actors of the film without even bothering to see the film, in spite of repeated requests by all concerned to do so. There is a lesson here — that appeasement of backward elements in society that openly threaten violence, in their eagerness to subvert the Constitution, is never a good idea. It encourages brinkmanship all the more.

Selena said in a video message, “Hello Nicholas, it is Selena Gomez. So I know what you’re doing and I would like to remind you of a time where we all went to Central Park together, it was over 10 years ago. I was wondering if that brought up anything for you, I know Central Park was really beautiful, it was actually my first time.” Nick explained, “We were very private about our relationship. And she was unhappy that her Central Park experience was ruined by the fact that I walked about 20 feet away from her. Even though they were taking pictures of us and obviously we were there together it was like, ‘It would be better if we stand about 25 feet apart.’ So her and Taylor Swift, who was dating my brother Joe, walked 25 feet behind us as we walked through the park by ourselves (sic).”

I didn’t want to live: Michael Phelps reveals his battle with crippling depression Phelps said he reached rock bottom following the 2012 Olympics in London where he won four gold medals and two silver.

Australian Open 2018: Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic advance to 4th round

Melbourne: Roger Federer eased into the second week of the Australian Open with a 6-2 7-5 6-4 win over Richard Gasquet on Saturday evening that kept the Swiss on course for a 20th grand slam title. The 36-year-old defending champion reached the fourth round of the Melbourne Park tournament for the 16th time by shifting up the gears when required to see off his French opponent in just under two hours on Rod Laver Arena. Gasquet played a solid match, studded with his trademark occasional moments of shot-making brilliance, but that was never enough to overcome one of the best players of all time. Watched from the stands by 11-times grand slam champion Laver, second seed Federer sealed the victory with a backhand winner to set up a first career meeting with Hungarian Marton Fucsovics for a place in the quarter-finals. Former champion Novak Djokovic added an apparent muscle strain in his lower back to concerns about his problem elbow but still overpowered Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2 6-3 6-3 to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Saturday.

gns, Los Angeles: Swimming great Michael Phelps revealed that he has battled severe anxiety and depression for much of his life which drove him to consider suicide after his success at the 2012 Olympics. Speaking at a mental health conference in Chicago, the 23-time Olympic gold medal winner talked openly about his long battle with crippling depression and is encouraging others to get help like he did. “After every Olympics I think I fell into a major state of depression,” the 32-year-old Phelps said. Phelps said he reached rock bottom following the 2012 Olympics in London where he won four

gold medals and two silver. For four days he remained in his room without food or sleep. “I didn’t want to be in the sport anymore,” he said. “I didn’t want to be alive.” When he hit a low point in his depression, Phelps said, “You do contemplate suicide.” Over the past two years Phelps has opened up about his struggles. Once again, Phelps said his depression and anxiety problems have been a staple of his life for the past 17 years. “We’re supposed to be this big, macho, physically strong human beings, but this is not a weakness,” he said. “We are seeking and reaching for help.

The 26-year-old Halep will meet the winner of home favourite Ashleigh Barty and Japan’s Naomi Osaka for a place in the quarterfinals.

Australian Open 2018: Simona Halep in 4th round, beats Lauren Davis in a thriller gns, Melbourne: World number one Simona Halep saved three match points before edging an inspired Lauren Davis 4-6, 6-4, 1513 in a thrilling marathon to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Saturday. The Romanian fought back from the brink at 11-10 in the epic final set before serving out the match on the fourth attempt after a taxing three hours and 44 minutes on the centre court at Rod Laver Arena. A former quarterfinalist at Melbourne Park, Halep closed out the attritional contest on the first match point, when 76thranked American Davis, who had gone for broke all match, fired into the tramlines, her 73rd unforced error. The 26-year-old Halep will meet the winner of home favourite Ashleigh Barty and Japan’s Naomi Osaka for a place in the quarterfinals, having carried her injured ankle through a deciding set of 142 minutes. “I‘m almost dead but it was nice that we could show good tennis,” Halep said in the on-court interview, raising a

laugh from the crowd. ”Definitely it was a very tough match, so long, and I never played the third set so long. “I just feel that my muscles are gone. My ankle is -- I don’t know how it is because I don’t feel it any more.” She came within an inch of the biggest win of her career when she swooped forward to pounce on a speculative drop-

shot and whipped a passing shot to earn three match points at 11-10. Halep nervelessly saved them all, winning five points in a row for a galvanising hold before Davis removed her sneaker and walked gingerly to her chair. She took a medical timeout to stall Halep’s momentum and the Romanian fumed on the baseline as a trainer

worked on Davis’s toe. With Davis hobbled slightly, Halep moved in for the kill but the American saved five break points to frustrate her opponent, and later thanked the net cord for helping her hold again at 12-12. Halep finally breached Davis’s serve at 14-13, and edged a 17-shot rally to come within two points of victory.

Australian Open 2018: Kerber thrashes Sharapova; Chung stuns Alex Zverev Melbourne: South Korean Hyeon Chung does not appear especially intimidating with his Zen-like demeanour and whiteframed spectacles but as German wunderkind Alex Zverev will testify, the 21-year-old should come with a health warning. Fourth seed Zverev went into their Australian Open thirdround clash of rising stars as favourite and with many tipping him as a potential winner of the tournament. Despite winning the first and third sets with some stunning tennis, however, the 20-year-old could not shake off the relentless Chung and ended up caving in 5-7 7-6(3) 2-6 6-3 6-0. Zverev was a broken man by the time the deciding set began and Chung needed just 23 minutes to put him out of his misery and become just the third South Korean to progress to the fourth round of a grand slam.

On January 9, Airbus signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Development and Reform Commission on industrial cooperation in Tianjin, north China’s port city. Airbus and its Chinese partners also signed a framework agreement to raiseA320 production at the final assembly line in Tianjin to six aircraft per month from four per month at present. Since, Airbus set up a representative office in China in 1994, it has made rapid progress with cooperation worth about USD 600 million in 2017 and a target of USD one billion dollars per year by 2020, state run Xinhua news agency reported.

Mumbai: Market continued its rally for seventh straight week, conquering new milestones as Benchmark Sensex gained 919.19 points to end new record highs at 35,511.58, while the broader Nifty closed at all-time historic high at 10,894.70. Barring some profitbooking on Tuesday session, bulls stayed confident through-out the week, though buying interest was not seen in the broader market, gains were mainly built-up by buying in stocks of banking, IT and Teck counters supported by positive economic datas and stock specific reports. Investors optimism swelled last Friday’s release of key macro-datas of Industrial production (IIP) numbers which marked 17

months-high in November, while spike in retail inflation (CPI) were duly sidelined by investors. Data of widening trade-deficit along with crude volatility and concern over fiscal-slippage played a spoil- sport,

it was remarkably cushioned by government decision to lower the additional borrowing requirement of the current fiscal as well as media reports of approval of 100 percent FDI in banks.

Rupee wobbles on gushing trade deficit woes amid rising crude

gns, Mumbai: The Indian rupee skidded further against the beleagured dollar as forex market sentiment took a hard hit on the back of suring global crude prices and growing trade deficit concerns. Stretching its losses for the secondstraight week, the home currency depreciated by 21 paise to end at 63.84. Overall trading mood turned into dismay after the countrys trade deficit widened to a three-year high on higher oil and gold imports. The rising inflation and some speculation that the government may miss its deficit target after international crude oil prices hit USD 70 a barrel will give less space to RBI to cut rates in the near term, adding to worries. Furthermore, the retail inflation accelerated to 5.2 per cent in December last year, though wholesale prices eased to 3.58 per cent in December 2017. Indeed it was a highly volatile week for currency market as rupee climbed to a fresh 3-year high of 63.33 before retreating sharply.

SMC sets lofty target of slum-free Surat

gns, Surat: Surat is on its way to become a slumfree city by 2022. Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has started building houses for nearly 80,000 slum dwellers of 354 slums pockets of the city. SMC conducted a survey two years after central government’s announcement of housing for all by 2022 and found that there were at least 354 slum pockets in the city where 74,000 units were located and 80,000 people lived. Two decades ago about 20 per cent of the population of the city lived in slums, but now the slums dwellers make up only 6.84 per cent of the total population. This

Over 250 women will search No more toll tax on Chhani laughter in their shrieks rail overbridge gns, SURAT: More than 250 women in mid-30s would attend a unique programme of laughter and crying together to be held in the city on Saturday. The programme called ‘Aansu and Muskan’ will provide an avenue to the participants to emote during different sessions to be addressed by a laughter guru and a psychiatrist. Well-known laughter guru Kamlesh Masalawala told TOI, “Emotions are connected with our mind and it requires thorough cleaning. If your mind is clean, you will always keep smiling and laughing. If you want to keep smiling, you need to clean your mind for which crying at least once in month is a must. Crying is an emotional act which cleanses your mind of sad memories. You begin to

feel lighter after you have cried.” Psychiatrists say the fast-paced world of today does not allow many people to show their emotions. Crying is an important emotion, but is seen as a sign of weakness by many. “If a person laughs without reason, people might call him mad. However, when someone is seen crying without reason, people worry for him or her. Many of us don’t have an avenue

to cry simply. People don’t understand that unless you cry nicely, you would not be able to smile wonderfully,” well-known psychiatrist Dr Mukul Chokshi said. “Crying is a process which helps remove the dirt from the tiniest part of your mind. Like you clean your house regularly, you also need to clean your mind which can be done by crying,” he added.

Commander of the US Pacific Command Admiral Harry Harris, during a panel discussion at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi with Indian Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba, said: “China is a disruptive transitional force in the Indo-Pacific. They are the owners of trust deficit”. Harris asked how defensive would Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines be when China has staked claims on the waters also claimed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) nations, comprising the former three countries, in an apparent reference to maritime disputes in the resource-rich South China Sea

(SCS). China claims almost all of the SCS. Its claims are contested by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. Harris also spoke of the sense of disquiet among Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines in view of the SCS dispute. He participated in the discussion with Japan’s Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano and Australian Navy chief Vice-Admiral Tim Barrett. Replying

to a question on their comments on China’s assertiveness, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters that this is not the first time the three have made such comments about China. Harris has named three ASEAN countries, saying they worried about China’s development, he said. “We did not hear from these countries that they feel worried about China’s development.
