The organisation also alleged that Subramanian lacked an understanding of the country and “ignored” farmers. “Subramanian lacked knowledge about India, he was obsessed with only Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and ignored the most important aspect of our economy — agriculture and farmers,” SJM co-convener Ashwani Mahajan told PTI. “Like former vice-chairman of Niti Aayog Arvind Panagariya, he was also speaking the language of ‘Washington Consensus’. His agenda and purpose was not clear,” said Mahajan, who has been critical of Subramanian on various policies.

The tale of two great economists

Chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian has decided to leave the ‘best job that he has ever had’ and his ‘dream boss’ to go back to the ‘old life’ of researching, writing and teaching. It surely is a great way of leaving one’s job. He has also let us know that Arun Jaitley was a great boss (if not a great finance minister). The ‘compelling reason’ he cited for leaving the job had a bit of hyper-emotionality that was the staple diet of his old native Tamil movies. “It is no secret (sorry, we didn’t know!) that we are expecting our first grandchild in earlySeptember. That’s a very compelling reason...,” he said. Jaitley also spoke about the pressing family commitments, “personal, but extremely important”. On a serious note, Arvind Subramanian made some remarkable contributions in his job, as testified by Jaitley. “His early diagnosis of the twin balancesheet had led us to adopt the macro-economic strategy of higher public investment in the Budget of 2015-’16. He conceptualised JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhar, Mobile) as a database for availing of public benefits. He contributed to the debate of federalism by conceptualising that Indian federalism has not merely to be cooperative, but also competitive. He came out with newer ideas, policy reforms in the sectors of clothing, fertilisers, kerosene, power and pulses. His report on the Revenue Neutral Rate was of great use in forging a consensus which led to the Constitution amendment enabling GST.” Subramanian is also credited with several futuristic ideas on rationalisation of removal of ‘subsidies for the rich’, universal basic income and climate change. “Socialism without entry and capitalism without exit” was one of his pet themes which he used to pithily explain the Indian economic journey from the ‘50s through the ‘90s, articulating a longstanding concern on the lack of mechanism to deal with failed businesses. His departure is under much happier circumstances than his equally, if not more illustrious, colleague, Raghuram Rajan, who was denied a second term as RBI governor due to his straight talk, particularly on Modi’s demonetisation plan. In hindsight, the plan turns out to be the biggest policy blunder committed by any government. Rajan, who has been acclaimed for predicting the global financial crisis of 2008, had clearly expressed against the idea and warned that the misadventure was doomed to fail. But the high-handed Modi dispensation brushed all that aside and, in “recognition” of his advice, let him go. Now, Arun Jaitley has a tough job at hand to get someone like Rajan or Subramanian. “Competence, competence and competence” would be the criteria, he told reporters. He is, of course, in a position to insist on it, unlike the Indian people who have no such privilege in deciding their finance minister.

Amitabh Chaudhary’s unauthorised Bhutan trip: COA issues showcause notice

Mumbai: A trip to Bhutan to survey “soil and cricketing equipment” has landed BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary in a spot of bother as the COA has show-caused him, questioning the very “need of his presence” there. Chaudhary has been asked to respond to the notice by July 4 on two specific counts. Firstly, “What was the justification for the visit to Bhutan? No prior proposal/ justification is seen in the records. No invitation/record could be provided by the office, excepting the rather abrupt e-mail attached on how the proposal originated. Secondly, “Why

was the approval of the Committee of Administrators not taken prior to your visit to Bhutan along with your Executive Assistant when you have done so in the past?” The COA has also questioned Chaudhary’s frequent foreign trips and domestic travel, which is significantly more than BCCI treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhry and acting president CK Khanna. COA was briefed by BCCI AGM (Cricket Operations) KVP Rao that the trip was meant to survey availability of cricket equipment, suitability of the clay/soil for preparation of pitches.

international China’s Weibo blocks comedian John Oliver after Xi Jinping roasting

Shanghai : China’s Twitter-like microblogging service Weibo has blocked and deleted posts referring to British comedian John Oliver after he slammed the country’s human rights record and mocked President Xi Jinping on his show, Last Week Tonight. In a 20-minute segment aired on HBO last Sunday, Oliver criticised China’s moves to end presidential term limits and enshrine “Xi Jinping Thought” in its constitution, saying Xi’s consolidation of power was driven by a “leadership cult”. Oliver also mocked China’s “Belt and Road” initiative, its ongoing crackdown on corruption, and moves to censor online images of the cartoon bear Winnie the Pooh, said to resemble Xi. Attempts to post Oliver’s English name or the name of his show prompted error messages about “information that violated related laws and regulations”. The Chinese translation of his name does not appear to have been censored.

Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan seeks new term with greater powers

Ankara : Since he took office in 2003, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given a name to each stage in his consolidation of power in Turkey. First he called himself the apprentice; then the journeyman; and latterly the master. Now, he says a new five-year term would elevate him to the role of “grandmaster” and help him make Turkey one of the world’s top powers by the time the republic marks its centenary in 2023. The most powerful and polarizing leader in Turkish history, Erdogan, 64, is standing for re-election in a presidential vote on Sunday that could cement Turkey’s switch from a parliamentary to a presidential system, which was narrowly approved in a referendum last year. He would take an office with vastly expanded powers, in a system that critics have compared to one-man rule. His opponents have promised a return to a parliamentary system with a distinct separation of powers. Opinion polls have put Erdogan several points ahead of his closest competitor in the presidential race. However, he would need to win more than 50 percent of the votes for an outright first-round victory and that looks less likely. Analysts say the outcome could be decided in a second round runoff on July 8. Erdogan, who has never lost an election, is this time around facing more robust opposition figures and parties cooperating with each other in an anti-Erdogan alliance.
