No-confidence motion was case of ‘majority versus morality’: TDP chief

New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday said that the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha was a case of “majority versus morality”. “After 15 years, no-confidence motion was moved by the Opposition parties. We knew they have majority; the motion was majority versus morality,” he said at a press conference in New Delhi: Following the victory of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government trust vote on Friday, Chandrababu Naidu had said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) betrayed the state of Andhra Pradesh, yet again. Chandrababu Naidu also took objections to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement in parliament on Friday that the TDP fell into the trap laid by its Opposition party, YSR Congress party. Addressing the media in the national capital on Saturday, the TDP chief said such statements were not expected from a person sitting on a post such as that of the Prime Minister. “He said you are falling in the trap of YSRCP. I told him as far as I am doing right things, nothing can happen to me and my party. I also asked him how can he compare me with tainted people... YSRCP’s leader is going to court every week,” Chandrababu Naidu said. The Andhra Pradesh chief minister said he is one of the senior politicians in the country and it was unfair to compare him with “tainted” people.

PM Modi taunts Oppn, refers to Rahul Gandhi’s ‘unwanted hug’ at UP rally

Shahjahanpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a dig at Rahul Gandhi over the “unwanted hug” he received from Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Parliament, and said the coming together of many parties against the BJP will only help the ‘lotus’ bloom. “We asked the reasons for their no-confidence, but when they failed to give it they ended up giving an unwanted hug,” PM Modi said, referring to Rahul Gandhi’s embrace in Lok Sabha on Friday. Addressing a Kisan Kalyan Rally in Shahjahanpur, PM Modi said: “There is not just one ‘dal’ (political party) but dal over dal resulting in “dal-dal” (marshy land) which will only help the ‘lotus” bloom.” Lotus is the election symbol of the BJP. He said the coming together of several parties against the BJP will be an opportunity. Slamming opposition parties, he said they were running after the Prime Minister’s chair, ignoring the poor, youth and farmers. He used a Hindi expression that translates to more the parties, more the marshy land in which the ‘lotus’ blooms. “Are you people satisfied with what happened yesterday in Lok Sabha... Have you come to know who is at fault.

After year-long protest, sanitary napkins exempted from GST “Sanitary napkins will be exempted from Goods & Services Tax,” said Finance Minister Piyush Goyal while addressing a press conference in Delhi following 28th meeting of GST Council. New Delhi : In a major relief to women, the GST Council Saturday decided to exempt sanitary napkins from the ambit of the Goods and Services Tax. “Sanitary napkins will be exempted from Goods & Services Tax,” said Finance Minister Piyush Goyal while addressing a press conference in Delhi following 28th meeting of GST Council. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also said that many items under the 28 per cent slab have been removed, ANI reported. “I think the 28 per cent tax slab should be done away with. The issue is being unnecessarily dragged,” said Sisodia, who also handles the Finance portfolio as well. The demand to exclude sanitary napkin from the GST has been going on for a long time. To drive the point home, a group of students from Gwalior launched a campaign in January this year. The students sent sanitary napkins with the

BJP losing allies, will be ousted from power in 2019: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata : A day after the Narendra Modi-led NDA government defeated the no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said that the BJP have no numbers outside the House and will be ousted from power in 2019 by a federal front alliance of regional parties. Mamata Banerjee also announced a mega rally to be held in the iconic Brigade Parade Ground on January 19 where she will invite all opposition political leaders for the initiation of the federal front against BJP. “On January 19 in brigade parade ground, we will hold a mega rally. The rally will mark the beginning of BJP end. I will call all political leaders (opposition parties). It will mark the beginning of the federal front. Bengal will show the

path in the Lok Sabha polls. But we are not hungry for chair,” she said. Speaking at the 25th anniversary of ‘July 21 TMC Martyr’s Day’ at Esplanade situated in the heart of Kolkata, the TMC supremo said that the no-confidence motion showed how the party is fast losing numbers and allies. “Yesterday, BJP somehow managed to slip through no-confidence motion by 325:126 votes. They somehow managed to get the numbers inside the House. Those are 2014 numbers. In 2019, they will be ousted. They pulled it off because of AIADMK’s support. Had Jayalalithaa been alive, BJP would have never got their vote. But they lost their oldest ally Shiv Sena. BJP is fast losing numbers and

allies. They won the no-confidence motion through ‘acquaintances’,” Mamata Banerjee said. “M K Stalin (DMK working president) will defeat AIADMK in Tamil Nadu. In UP, if Akhilesh and Mayawati come together, their alliance will win 50 of the 80 seats. In Madhya Pradesh, they had got 28 seats but this time they will not win even 8 seats. In Rajasthan, they won 25 seats but this time they will not even win 5 seats there. In Gujarat, they will get zero. In Bihar, Laluji will grasp all the seats. In West Bengal, people will show them the doors. In Odhisa Navin Patnaik will get the seats. In Punjab, Amarinder Singh will thwart them. Where will they get the seats,” said Mamata Banerjee.

Rahul has seriously hurt image of Indian politician before world: Jaitley

New Delhi: Accusing Rahul Gandhi of “concocting” a conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said the Congress President has seriously hurt the image of an Indian politician before the world at large. Participating in the debate on ‘no-confidence motion’ in the Lok Sabha on Friday Gandhi said that Macron told him that there was no binding secrecy clause in the Rafale deal. The statement was denied by the French government. “Rahul Gandhi, by concocting a conversation with President Macron, has lowered his own credibility and seriously hurt the image of an Indian politician before the world at large,” Jaitley said in a Facebook post. The minister also hit out at the Congress President accusing him of trivialising the no-confidence motion debate stressing “facts are always sacrosanct”. “None should ever trivialise the debate. Those who desire to be Prime Minister never blend ignorance, falsehood and acrobatics.” In the post titled “Frivolity and the No

Confidence Motion”, Jaitley said the lead participants in the debate are normally senior political leaders. They are expected to raise the level of political discourse. “A Vote of No Confidence against the Government is a serious business. It is not an occasion for frivolity,” he said. The minister said if a participant in the debate happens to be a president of a national political party nourishing prime ministerial aspirations, every word he speaks should be precious. His facts should convey credibility. The NDA government on Friday faced the no-confidence motion brought in by opposition in Parliament on

Friday. The government won the motion by 325 against 126 votes in the Lok Sabha. In his speech, Gandhi had launched a frontal attack on the NDA government over unfulfilled promises and questioned the Rafale deal, demanding answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on why he allegedly favoured a particular businessman in the contract. Stating that Gandhi missed a great opportunity, Jaitley said “if this was his best argument for 2019, God help his party”. Attacking Gandhi, Jaitley said his lack of understanding is not only confined to basic issues but also to the niceties of protocol.

message written on them to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to exempt the taxes levied on the product and make it free of cost. Apart from sanitary napkins, the GST Council also declared stone/marble/wood idols, rakhis, sal leaves, phulbhari jhadu to be exempted from GST. The GST rate cuts announced today will be effective from July 27. Talking about tax returns, Sisodia said the GST Council also approved the quarterly returns for traders having turnover up to Rs 5 crore. Finance Minister Piyush Goyal chaired the meeting of the Goods and Services Tax Council on Saturday, for the first time since taking charge of this portfolio.

Ibrahim – From king to ascetic

One of the greatest Sufi masters Ibrahim bin Adham of the 8th century is amongst the earliest of Sufis whose lives have been documented. He came from a family of emperors who ruled in the city of Balkh in Central Asia. Ibrahim was a wealthy king whose palace was full of gold, silver and precious gems. He wore ornaments laced with jewellery and his slippers were studded with gems. One day, Ibrahim renounced the throne to lead a life of complete asceticism. The story that led to the mystic’s change of heart is a famous one. It is said that one night Ibrahim lay asleep on the luxurious bed in his palace. He heard some noises that seemed to come from the roof. On inquiring about the commotion, Ibrahim heard a voice saying: “I am looking for my camel who came here to find some grass to graze.” The king replied that looking for a camel on the palace rooftop was foolish. The voice retorted: “O ignorant one, it is just as foolish to seek God in the palace wearing silken clothes and sleeping on a golden couch.” These words were the beginning of his spiritual awakening. The next day the king called his ministers and asked him to open the palace gates and allow everyone in, as long as they are dressed in good clothes. People came to the palace in clothes of velvet and silk. Then an old man entered with torn and tattered clothes. The guards noticed a light on his face and did not dare stop him. Ibrahim saw him and asked why he came to the palace in such shabby clothes. The man replied: “I have come to a rest house.” The king reminded him that he had come to a palace and not some roadside inn. The man said: “I do not see a palace, just a rest house. Who owned this palace before you?” “My father,” Ibrahim replied. “And before him?” “My grandfather.” “And before him?” “His father.” “And where are they now?” “They have all died and gone away.” “So for each of them this was a rest house. Each one came, rested for a while and then went away. One day, you too shall die and leave this palace. Think about it Ibrahim, this is not a palace, just a rest house.” After saying this, the old man went away. Ibrahim became anguished and had strange visions each night. In order to calm himself, he decided to go hunting in the forest. Four times he heard a voice crying, “Awake!” but he steadfastly ignored it. At the fourth cry he spied a deer and prepared to give chase. However, the deer turned around and spoke to him: “You cannot hunt me; I have been sent to hunt you. Was it for this that you were created, and is this what you have been commanded?” On hearing the deer, Ibrahim let out a loud cry and turned to God in sincere repentance. A spiritual fire alighted in the king’s heart and he headed for the jungles, leaving both wealth and family forever. Ibrahim became the first Sufi to classify the stages of piety, teaching that a man could achieve the ranks of righteousness by following a journey of six steps.

Mansi Ahlawat settles for silver at junior Asian wrestling

New Delhi: Mansi Ahlawat is still unable to believe that she lost, even after the medal ceremony. She can barely control her emotions while she explains how it was her dream to win the gold medal. With her father Pawan Ahlawat and coach Mandeep in the stands, Mansi reached the finals with dominating wins but could not go past Japan’s Akei Hanai in the final who won via technical superiority. “I never thought I would lose 10-0. My father and Mandeep are travelling with me and I wanted to win the

gold medal. I had never wrestled the Japanese wrestler before. This was not the way it should have ended,” Mansi says, holding back her tears. The Junior Asian Championships in Delhi was Mansi’s first event in this category and as the national champion in the 57kg category, she wanted to continue her dominance at the continental level as well. She did that in the first two bouts of the day by defeating Nadia Narin (100) and Zhanerka Assanova (11-0) via technical superiority. For the past four years, Mansi, along with

sister Khushi, has been training at the Chhotu Ram Stadium in Rohtak, the same arena where Sakshi Malik trained before her Rio Olympics campaign. But wrestling was not the first sport they tried their hands at. Initially they trained as gymnasts but their interest veered into wrestling after watching the other girls wrestle at the stadium. captain Steve Smith were suspended for 12 months and Bancroft for nine months for their involvement in the incident during a test against South Africa at Cape Town in March. Their suspensions cover international matches and Austalia’s main domestic competitions but the trio are free to play in independent leagues such as the Strike League. Warner and Smith recently played in a Twenty20 tournament in Canada. Warner played a bright innings Saturday before falling to a topedged catch. He also took a catch in the field.

New Delhi: Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s untimely back injury could well jeopardize India’s chances of winning the five-match Test series against England. Kumar, who has been an integral part of India’s recent success in the longer format would have been a valuable asset against England’s batting. Concurring to it legendary India batsman Sachin Tendulkar also believes that Bhuvi’s injury is a real setback but India should focus on the job ahead. “Bhuvi’s injury (stiff back) is a real setback for India. I for one was expecting a lot from him. He has over the years performed at a level that you expect a certain kind of performance from him. With his ability to swing the ball, he was going to be very critical to India’s scheme of things during the Test

India vs England: I want to be the guy Joe Root looks to, says Stuart Broad London : Stuart Broad wants to be the go-to “guy” for skipper Joe Root as the seamer gears up to prove his fitness and make a comeback in the big-ticket Test series against India, beginning August 1. The Nottinghamshire pace bowler doesn’t want to look too far ahead, but next year’s Ashes series is definitely on his radar. “I think it is quite dangerous to look as far ahead as that. It can take your mind off what is really important,” Broad told Sky Sports News. “I don’t want to look too far

ahead, but a huge goal of mine is to regain the Ashes in 2019. That is number one, top of the list, but what is going to make me a better cricketer in the short term, is to be able to be in that team fit and firing and be the guy Rooty (Joe Root)

Reliance Power net rises 3 per cent to Rs 237.33 cr in April-June quarter New Delhi: Reliance Power on Saturday posted about three per cent increase in its consolidated net profit at Rs 237.33 crore in the quarter ended on June 30, 2018. The company had reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 230.85 crore in the quarter ended on June 30, 2017, a BSE filing said. According to the filing, total income of the company declined to Rs 2,370.55 crore in the first quarter of this fiscal from Rs 2,752.32 crore a year ago. The company said that its 3,960 MW Sasan ultra mega power project

(UMPP) in Madhya Pradesh operated at PLF (plant load factor or capacity utilisation) of 98.2 per cent, the highest ever quarterly station PLF achieved since commercial operation date (COD). It also said that Sasan project’s PLF continues to be the highest among all 1,000 MW plus thermal plants in the country for two consecutive quarters. Its 1,200 MW Rosa power plant in Uttar Pradesh operated at PLF of 63 per cent while the 600 MW Butibori power plant in Maharashtra operated at PLF of 45 per cent.

Mumbai: Precious metals extended its slide for the 2nd consecutive week and cracked below Rs 30,000-mark to close at Rs 29,835 per 10 grams at the bullion market during the week amid weakening global trend and considerable fall in demand from local jewellers. Traders said sentiment was downbeat as gold prices slipped to their lowest in a year in global markets, as the dollar firmed after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s US

economic outlook reinforced views that the central bank is on track to steadily hike interest rates, eroding appeal of the precious metal. The yellowmetal shed a whopping 2.29 per cent in its two week downslide, or Rs 695 per 10 grams. Silver slipped below the Rs 38,000-mark due to reduced offtake by industrial units and coin makers. The whitemetal plunged 3.57 per cent in its second weekly fall, or Rs 1,390 per kg.

Gold slips for the 2nd consecutive week Mumbai: HDFC Bank Ltd posted a 18.2 per cent rise in first-quarter net profit but missed analysts’ estimates as the lender chose to include all mark-to-market losses in the first quarter, leading to higher provisions. Net profit rose to 46.01 billion rupees ($669.43 million) for the quarter ended June 30, from 38.94 billion rupees a year ago, India’s second-biggest lender by assets said in a statement. Analysts had on average

expected a net profit of 47.66 billion rupees for the bank that has the highest market capitalisation in the sector at nearly $85 billion, according to Thomson Reuters data. Gross bad loans as a percentage of total loans stood at 1.33 per cent at end-June, versus 1.3 per cent at end-March. With its strong retail presence and relatively smaller exposure to sectors such as infrastructure that have led to record levels of bad loans in India’s

banking sector, HDFC Bank is a favourite among investors. Its loans at endJune grew 22 per cent from a year earlier. Private sector banks have expanded loans at a faster pace and have snatched market share from dominant state-backed lenders that account for the bulk of bad loans in India. Provisions, or the amount set aside by the bank to cover a future liability, for the quarter rose to 16.29 billion rupees from 15.59 billion rupees,

last year, with the lender not opting for a central bank dispensation of spreading bond losses over four quarters. This led to a mark-to-market loss of 3.91 billion rupees in the quarter, the bank said in a statement. Net interest income rose 15.4 per cent from a year earlier, while net interest margin came in at 4.2 percent. HDFC Bank’s smaller rival Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd missed profit estimates earlier this week as provisions surged.

series,” Tendulkar told PTI. “And let’s not forget those runs that Bhuvi scored in England during the last series (2014). He is a decent enough batsman, who could string those partnerships at the back end of the innings. But then, I believe that we still have a lot of quality in our pace department (Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur),” he added. Another Indian seamer who will be out of action is Jasprit Bumrah. But according to Tendulkar, his absence was felt more in the ODI series. “Bumrah was certainly missed by India in the ODI series during those crucial death overs where he has been a champion bowler. He has started off well in Test cricket and this series is a wonderful opportunity for him.

Gujarat Govt Panel Charged With Aiding Tata, Adani, Essar Power Plants to Meet

Ahmedabad : The toplevel committee set up by the Gujarat government to find ways to bail out the loss-making, imported coal-based power plants of Adani Power, Tata Power and Essar will meet tomorrow for the first time, according to sources. The meeting, which will take place in New Delhi, will primarily involve an interaction with consumer representatives and energy secretaries of states procuring power from these plants under longterm contracts. A handful of power plants of Adani, Tata and Essar were rendered financially unviable by the Supreme Court’s judgment last year, which quashed the compensatory tariff that was awarded to them by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). The power distribution companies (discoms) from Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana

and Punjab, besides the home state of Gujarat, are among contracted buyers of electricity from these plants. Sunday’s meeting assumes added significance given that discoms and consumer groups have strongly opposed tariff hike proposals. Sources with knowledge of the matter say if a relief package is in the offing, the committee wants to understand how it would impact all stakeholders. The panel, which was formed recently by the Gujarat government, includes former Supreme Court judge justice R.K. Agarwal, former Reserve Bank of India deputy governor S.S. Mundra and ex-CERC chairman Pramod Deo. It is being assisted by NTPC and SBI Caps. Significantly, it was Pramod Deo who as CERC chairman in 2013 approved compensatory tariff for Adani Power’s and Tata Power’s generating stations in Mundra, Gujarat.

international 15-yr-old jailed in Indonesia for having abortion after being raped by brother

Jakarta: A 15-year-old girl who was raped by her older brother has been jailed for six months for having an abortion, an Indonesian official said on Saturday. The girl was sentenced on Thursday alongside her 17-yearold brother in a closed hearing at Muara Bulian District Court on the island of Sumatra, court spokesman Listyo Arif Budiman said.“The girl was charged under the child protection law for having an abortion,” he told AFP. Her brother was sentenced to two years in jail for sexually assaulting a minor. Indonesia forbids abortion unless a woman’s life is at risk or under certain circumstances if she is raped.

The law requires that an abortion must be performed by a registered professional no later than six weeks into a pregnancy, and the woman must undergo counselling. The girl, who was raped by her brother eight times starting in September last year, had the abortion about six months after becoming pregnant, Budiman said. She was helped by her mother who is facing separate charges. Police arrested the siblings in June after a male foetus was discovered at a palm oil plantation near Pulau village in Jambi province. Prosecutors had originally asked that the girl be jailed for one year and her brother for seven.

Democrats with Intel, military backgrounds tout service after Trump-Putin summit

Washington : Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer running in a competitive congressional race in Virginia, is using the outcry over President Donald Trump’s meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin to press what she and other Democrats believe will be a powerful campaign theme. She declared that her Republican rival is choosing party over country – a message Spanberger and dozens of other Democratic candidates with U.S. military or intelligence agency experience believe will resonate with voters, bolstered by their

national security credentials. By touting their service, the Democratic candidates are trying to upend a long-held political tenet that Republicans are the country’s foreign-policy hawks. This year, some Democrats see an opening, fueled by Trump’s embrace of Putin, to speak to voters worried that American alliances may be shifting. “Russia was never a daily issue, which is why our candidates were focused on bread-and-butter issues,” said Democratic strategist Maria Cardona with the Dewey Square Group, who was a Democratic National Committee spokeswoman.
