A Baguiati resident, Tapas Roy Choudhury, received a call from a friend informing him that a ghost, which would do anything for him and turn all his wishes into reality, was available for sale, police said on Saturday. The friend also said that he could introduce Roy Choudhury to the seller, if he was interested. Roy Choudhury discussed the matter with another friend Basudeb Kundu and decided to have a look at the ghost. He then informed the friend about his willingness

to purchase it. The seller himself then called up Roy Choudhury and told him that the price of the ghost is Rs 10 lakh, police said. An appointment was fixed and Roy Choudhury and Kundu came to Burdwan town. Four persons escorted them from Ullas More to a hotel in a vehicle bearing a police sticker. The four showed them a small soft drink bottle with a Rs 1 coin in it and said the ghost was inside the bottle. They also demanded the price for the ghost. When Roy Choudhury told them that he had no money, the four forcibly took Rs. 600, all the cash that Choudhury and his friend had at that time, and locked them up in the hotel room.

CM loses both battle and war

B JP seems to have salvaged a face-saving tie in the state civic polls, but Shivraj Singh Chouhan has lost both the battle and the war. Widely considered as the ‘semifinal’ of the coming Assembly elections and fought on the chief minister’s perceived personal charisma, the results from the civic body polls should provide little comfort to the ruling party’s leadership in Delhi, while boosting the spirits of the Congress,. The spirited Congress show saw the party romp home with nine presidential posts in the 19 that were up for grabs, the same as BJP’s, with one seat going to an independent. Six nagarpalikas were split 4-2 in favour of Congress, with nagarpalika parishads doing the honours for BJP 7-5. The results further rub salt into the BJP wounds when one considers that no senior Congress leaders were on hand to help the party’s civic poll campaign, while Chouhan was leading from the front, addressing rallies and road shows. The Congress camp can be legitimately pleased that Chouhan’s magic did not work in Digvijay Singh’s home turf despite the absence of the veteran leader, who was away on his Narmada pilgrimage, leaving things to the care of his son. The civic poll results may also be considered as an emphatic vote against the obnoxious VIP racism, which was exemplified by a video going viral, of the chief minister slapping his body guard during a rally. Chouhan’s conduct invited widespread condemnation all over the state and it was a talking point in the local body poll campaign. In the nagarpalika, where the disgusting incident took place, the Congress candidate was elected president, giving critics another opportunity to browbeat the chief minister for the arrogance of power. Only recently, Chouhan celebrated the completion of 12 years in office, creating a record for the longevity of his government, overhauling the previous best by Digvijay Singh. Anti-incumbency may have finally started working. With Gujarat having been a case of touch and go for the BJP as Congress, aided by the consolidation of dalit and patidar votes under young leaders of their communities, virtually gave the party a run for its money, the BJP leadership, particularly the Sangh Parivar, is fully seized of the dangers ahead as the runup begins to the sate assembly elections later this year as well as the Lok Sabha elections due in 2019. A post-poll introspection by the Congress suggested that the party may have inadvertently handed over Gujarat to Modi on a platter, with the thoughtless utterances of some of its leaders giving the prime minister the perfect condition to exploit Gujarati pride for his party’s benefit. But Chouhan is no Modi, just as Madhya Pradesh is not Gujarat. The fatigue of long rule, the CM’s failing magic and the continuing agrarian tragedy are all working against Chouhan and his party.

‘It’s unprecedented’: Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan to shoot together!

While this may not happen in a movie, the three reigning Khans of Bollywood will be coming together, to shoot in the same location — Film City. Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan were last seen together with TV anchor Rajat Sharma, doing a mock interview called Khan Ki Adaalat. They will now be shooting in the same location for their upcoming ventures. Yash Raj Films has planned a shoot of Thugs of Hindostan at Film City, because director Vijay Krishna Achary wanted a larger set, something that was not available at the YRF studio premises. Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan’s film Zero, directed by Aanand L. Rai is also being shot continuously in the suburb of Goregaon with Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif. And finally, the makers of Race 3 have put up three sets at different locations, one of which is in Film City. Therefore, Salman too will be seen at the same location. “I don’t remember any one location or film studio in the past many years, when all the three Khans have been shooting at the same time. It’s unprecedented!” exclaims trade analyst Atul Mohan. Now, will we see the three Khans together in one happy frame from the location? Only time will tell.

How ‘fans’ leave stars fuming, injure photographers, yet earn money from selfie craze These are people who are getting other fans to the location, making money after the fans click pictures with the stars.

Over the past few months, a group of ‘fans’ have reportedly been wandering around stars, getting their selfies clicked. In fact, paparazzi shooting pictures of the stars too seem to have started seeing familiar faces around. One such star, who’s facing this constant barrage is Varun Dhawan. Says a photographer, “They’re not fans; they’re people who are getting other fans to the location, and making money after the fans have clicked pictures with the stars. Varun did spot someone, who was making money from the fans who got to click selfies. He was indignant.” Such ‘fans’ have also indulged in fistfights with the paparazzi in the past. Recently, when Jacqueline Fernandez emerged from a restaurant, the same group came in between the shutterbugs and the actress, and trued to get selfies organised, when a fight broke out and the photographers were injured. The fan-friendly Varun, who was also Jackkie’s co-star in Judwaa 2, now wants to make sure these elements don’t come near him. Interestingly, this isn’t quite a new phenomenon. In the days of yore, some freelance photographers would get a couple of fans to gatecrash with them for big events and parties. They’d take money from them not just to get pictures clicked with the stars, but also to partake in dinner and cocktail pleasures served at the event.

Australian Open 2018: Rafael Nadal defeats Diego Schwartzman to reach quarterfinal Nadal will next play sixth-seeded Marin Cilic, who collected his 100th Grand Slam match win.

IPL 2018 auction: Stokes,Ashwin, Gambhir, Gayle, Starc headline marquee players gns, New Delhi: Troubled England

all-rounder Ben Stokes and Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin are among the 16 marquee players for the upcoming IPL Players’ Auction in Bengaluru on January 27 and 28. Australian speedster Mitchell Starc and England captain Joe Root are also among the top foreigners who will be under the hammer in the auction. Root’s entry in the marquee list is an indication that England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has finally understood what their players want. Stokes was cleared to play for England again on Wednesday despite being charged with affray. He was earlier suspended by the ECB from international duty for his involvement in an incident outside a nightclub in September that reportedly left a man with a fractured eye socket. While more than 1000 players had registered for the auctions, the BCCI has pruned the list to 578 players. The players have been bracketed into eight distinct slabs as per their profiles. The slabs for internationals (Indian and foreign) are Rs 2 crore, Rs 1.5 crore, Rs 1 crore, Rs 75 lakh and Rs 50 lakh respectively while uncapped players are base-priced at Rs 40, 30 and 20 lakh respectively.

gns, Melbourne: If Rafael Nadal wanted a fitness test in the first week, he got one in his almost four-hour, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 win over Diego Schwartzman. After embracing at the net, his spot in a 10th Australian Open quarterfinal secure, top-ranked Nadal draped an arm around his Argentine friend and patted him on top of the head. “A great battle ... he’s a good friend of mine,” Nadal said. “This is the first big match that I played in 2018. One match like this probably helps. That’s confidence for myself, that’s confidence I can resist for four hours on court at a good intensity.” Nadal lost last year’s Australian Open final in five sets

to Roger Federer, but went on to regain the No. 1 ranking and win the French and U.S. Open titles before bringing his season to a premature end because of an injured right knee. He didn’t play a competitive match before the season-opening major, and advanced through three rounds without dropping a set. That streak finished when Schwartzman took the second set to level the match, rebounding three times after dropping serve to break back against Nadal. The key game of the fourth set lasted almost 13 minutes and 20 points, with Nadal finally holding after saving five break points as Schwartzman attacked him with everything he had.

Premier League: Sergio Aguero stars as Man City trounce Newcastle, take 12-point lead

gns, London: Who needs Alexis

Sanchez? That may have been the message Sergio Aguero was trying to deliver as he inspired runaway leader Manchester City to a 3-1 home victory over Newcastle on Saturday.City pulled out of the race to sign Arsenal striker Sanchez earlier this month, leaving the way clear for Manchester United to seal an expected deal for the highly rated Chile forward in the next few days.Aguero has broken record after record in his seven years at City and once again underlined his importance to Pep Guardiola’s team by firing a hat-trick against Newcastle, a team he scored five against in 2015.“We’re really happy with the victory,” said Aguero after registering his 11th treble for the club and his second of the season. “We needed it after last week (losing 4-3 to Liverpool). It’s a long season though and we’ve not won anything yet.” There was a minute’s applause at all the games, and players wore black armbands, as the Premier League paid tribute to former England striker Cyrille Regis, who died last Sunday at the age of 59.

Fifth-placed Tottenham travels to Southampton on Sunday while Liverpool, which occupies fourth spot, visits bottom club Swansea on Monday. Second-placed Manchester United squeezed past Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor with a 54thminute goal from Anthony Martial but Jose Mourinho’s side remained 12 points adrift of its cross-town neighbor. Mourinho said he expected United’s big-money

deal for Sanchez to go through soon. “I expect soon or never,” he said. “I think it’s so close - so close that if it doesn’t happen (soon) it’s not going to happen. I think everybody is giving everything they can and I think they are going to be successful.” Turbo-charged London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal warmed up in style for their midweek League Cup showdown by turning on the goal power.

Sparring with journalists was clearly unedifying Sparring with journalists was clearly unedifying. But to his credit, Kohli did not make excuses for India’s dismal performances. He didn’t blame the pitch or lack of time to acclimatize and took the disappointing result on the chin. As captain of India and somebody who’s played a lot of international cricket, Kohli should know that when the team loses, searching, even uncomfortable questions will be asked. That is the nature of the transaction between the media and the performer. These questions can seem provocative — even taunting — when you are wallowing in disappointment and want to hurry back and do your post-mortem in private or the dressing room. But the captain has to brace up to such situations. For instance, not playing Ajinkya Rahane despite his impressive record overseas was not illogical.

India to become fastest growing large economy in 2018: Report

gns, NEW DELHI: India will overtake

China to be the fastest growing large economy in 2018 and the country’s equity market will become the fifth largest in the world, says a report. According to a Sanctum Wealth Management report, when the rest of the world offers low growth and insufficient structural change, India, by contrast, is seen as a reforming economy with the prospect of strong longterm growth. “India will become the fastest growing large economy in the world, eclipsing China. Indian equity market will

jump to become the fifth largest in the world,” the report noted. At a time when developed economies are cheering 2-3 per cent growth, India is focused on breaching 7.5 per cent, it said Moreover, India also benefits from a favourable contrast to other emerging markets. In particular, the fact that China is downshifting to a slower pace of growth “Prospective returns for equities are much higher than the 6-8 per cent that one can expect from fixed income,” it noted However, if inflation or rates rise, markets are not likely to

register further gains. Muted earning could also impact market performance “Considering the fact that Nifty50 is in a broader uptrend, a sustained move beyond the 10,490-10,580 levels could lead to a rally towards 11,200-11,500 levels in the medium term,” it noted As per the report, a major factor that has changed is that the domestic buyer now sets market prices. Domestic mutual funds bought equities worth USD 15.3 billion against USD 8 billion by foreign investors in 2017 The report that

identifies various big-picture trends at play this year in the domestic and global economy, noted that Aadhaar, Jan Dhan, Demonetisation, GST, are working to create a new inclusive infrastructure in India. “Given the rapid pace at which the Indian economy is developing, investors today are faced with the need to make crucial investment decisions amidst multiple cross currents, using a complex array of choices,” Sanctum Wealth Management Chief Executive Officer Shiv Gupta said.

Lufthansa says it will offer WiFi on board its flights to, from and over India ‘the moment it is allowed to’

gns, NEW DELHI: A day after India allowed in flight connectivity (IFC) in its skies, German major Lufthansa has announced it will offer Wi-Fi on its flights to, from and over India the moment “it is allowed to”. Lufthansa Group South Asia head Wolfgang Will told TOI that the airline offers WiFi on all its longhaul flights. “Till now we had to switch off the service on entering Indian airspace. Now as soon as we get all the regulatory clearances, we will provide this service on our flights to, from and over India,” Will said. This will mean flyers taking off, headed for and overflying India will

get the paid-Internet Lufthansa offers on its long haul flights. TRAI has said airlines can provide this service the moment a plane starts taxiing and personal electronic devices are put on flight mode. “We offer Internet packages, Flynet, starting at Euro 9 and going to Euro 17 depending on the duration it is bought for ranging from an hour to 24 hours,” Wills, Lufthansa’s south Asia senior director, said. He added that the group has consciously decided not to allow mobile services on its flights. “We don’t know if someone decides to entertain other sitting nearby when they want to sit. The Internet we offer is fast

enough to download and stream. Whatsapp, social media can easily be done with that,” Wills said. Asked how much it will cost for Indian airlines to get this facility on their planes, he said the investment is quite ‘significant’. “We are talking about an aircraft moving at high speeds constantly being connected to satellites to get the internet. So the investment is significant but is a huge value to flyers. We will provide the same to our Indian flyers,” he said. Lufthansa will allow flyers to pay for the onboard Wi-Fi through miles also. So you can earn your miles for being connected to flights through Internet.

City status, Ahmedabad has witnessed a renewed interest in its architectural legacy and monuments. There are a number of stepwells in the city limits and in the vicinity, rich in subterranean architecture, more often than not embellished with highly ornate pillars, galleries and sculptures. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has started a sustained mission to revive these marvels using the original techniques and more modern methods.Jethabhai ni Vav (Jethabhai Stepwell) in Isanpur is one of the newest stepwells of the city, though it dates back to the 1860s. According to James Burgess in the 1905 report of the Archaeological Survey of Western India, it was commissioned by Jethabhai Jivanlal Nagjibhai

Gujarat - Khambhat - are set to celebrate Uttarayan on Sunday. The town does not celebrate its kiteflying festival on January 14, the day of Makar Sankranti, the way the rest of the state does. It reserves its celebrations for the Sunday immediately after January 14. Another reason why the ancient town’s Uttarayan is different is that that entire town throngs the beach to fly kites. As the kiteflying takes place by the sea, it is called ‘Dariyai Uttarayan’. Kite-makers in Khambhat are credited with the invention of the ‘cheel kite’, which instantly

Tapan Shukla, a local kite enthusiast, said that contrary to popular belief, Khambhat residents do not indulge in aggressive competitions while kite flying. “Unlike conventional kite flying, where the string is pulled to cut a kite, here the string is set loose to ensure the opponent’s kite string is cut,” he said. “Since kite flying is a tribute to the sea, people cut the string themselves and allow the kite to fly into the sea in the evening. Nobody takes their kites and manja home,” Shukla said.

‘Firms should work in present but with eye on the future’

gns, AHMEDABAD: Vijay ‘VG’ Govindarajan, Coxe Distinguished Professor at Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business, and author of books such as ‘Reverse Innovation’ and ‘Beyond the Idea’, spoke on the theme of his book, ‘The Three Box Solution’, at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad ((IIM-A) on Saturday evening. Govindarajan explained that he sees three boxes as ‘Manage the Present’, ‘Selectively Forget the Past’ and ‘Create the Future’. He said that any corporate firm has to manage all the three aspects of business to be successful. He gave the example of innovation such as developing low-cost ECG for developing nations as a disruptive solution instead of downscaling the

existing model. “We can also look at the example of Olympics high jump history,” he said. “It started with the scissors technique. Over the decades, the champions devised new methods to raise the bar with western roll and straddle. But it was Fosbury Flop - a totally unconventional approach to the sport - which found success. It was a disruptive method,” Govindarajan said. He also talked about different phases of a company and advised that along with the present, they also should look at the future. “In other words, the firms have a core business to look after. To grow and be future-ready, they should explore the adjacent space and look at disruptive business model,” he said.

gns, Bonn: Germany’s center-left Social Democrats (SPD) will decide on Sunday whether to start formal coalition talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives, a move which would bring Europe’s economic powerhouse one step closer to a stable government.SPD leader Martin Schulz is facing a strong backlash from the party’s left and youth wings, which argue that the SPD should reinvent itself in opposition after scoring its worst election result in September since Germany became a federal republic in 1949.Around 600 delegates, meeting in Bonn, will debate and vote on whether their leaders should push ahead with coalition talks on renewing an alliance with Merkel’s conservatives that took office in 2013.The two blocs, which both bled support to the far right in the September 24 election, struck a preliminary deal last week but critics, including the party’s youth wing leader Kevin Kuehnert, say the agreed blueprint does not bear enough of the SPD’s hallmarks.
