ENGLISH DAILY MORNING REPUTED NEWS PAPER, AHMEDABAD EDITION Editor : Kapilkumar M. Hirpara

Short News Congress’ uphill task: Stay relevant in Sabarimala, despite dichotomy

Kochi : On the afternoon of September 28, shortly after India’s apex court handed down what many consider a historic verdict ending age-related restrictions on the entry of women at the hilltop shrine at Sabarimala, Ramesh Chennithala, the Congress’ Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, appeared before the press with a brief, somewhat unprepared statement. He affirmed that the Congress ‘welcomed’ the Supreme Court ruling and that every Indian must abide by it, no matter what. The statement was seen as neither here, nor there, somehow indicating there was more to come. If rights activists expected a full-throated endorsement of the verdict by a leader of a party, conceived as liberal and progressive, it never came.

Can’t stop pilgrims in groups, chanting Ayyappa songs: Kerala High Court

New Delhi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday ruled that Sabarimala pilgrims should not be prevented from moving in groups and chanting Ayyappa keerthanam (devotional songs) on the pretext of maintaining prohibitory orders at the shrine. The division bench issued the interim order on a bunch of petitions moved by various organisations, which had challenged imposition of Section 144 of CrPC at Sabarimala. The prohibitory orders have been in place at Sabarimala and nearby base stations since November 15 to prevent violent protests in a bid to stop women of menstruating age from going to the temple. In September, the Supreme Court had ordered that all women should be allowed to enter the hill shrine. In its order on Wednesday, the High Court bench of Justices P R Ramachandra Menon and N Anil Kumar observed that Sabarimala is a place of special pilgrimage where devotees come in groups under the leadership of a guru swami — a senior pilgrim who has visited the shrine on several successive years — and chant Ayyappa keerthanam.

1984 riots verdict: BJP slams Congress for ‘denying justice’

New Delhi : A day after a Delhi court awarded death sentence to one person and life imprisonment to another in connection with the 1984 anti-sikh riots, the BJP accused the past Congress governments of denying justice to victims of the riots. BJP leader and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the probe carried out by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Narendra Modi government led to the sentencing. “We (BJP) are satisfied,” Prasad told reporters at BJP headquarters and added that people needed to be told that the Congress had, during its rule, tried to ensure that the Sikh riot victims did not get justice. Prasad also said the Congress did this to save its own people. “On behalf of BJP, I say with full responsibility that the available evidence clearly show that Congress party ensured in the last 35 years that no fair investigation or trial was allowed to take place to bring the culprits to book,” Prasad said.

According to the Chief Minister, Bikram used his motorcycle in the attack with Avtar riding pillion. It was Avtar who lobbed the grenade, Singh said. “It is just a matter of time that we catch him.”

Amritsar grenade attack: Youth held, CM Amarinder says Pak bid to disturb peace Chandigarh : Police in Punjab arrested a 26-year-old on Wednesday and searched for a registered medical practitioner for allegedly carrying out a grenade attack on a Nirankari congregation last Sunday that left three persons dead and over 20 injured at Raja Sansi in Amritsar. Announcing the arrest of Bikramjit Singh alias Bikram who hails from Dhariwal, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh told reporters that the terror attack was carried out in active collaboration with the Pakistani establishment and the ISI with a motive to disturb the peace in Punjab. He said Bikram is an operative of the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) and carried out the

attack for money. Bikram’s associate Avtar Singh Khalsa (32), from Chak Mishri Khan village in Ajnala, is on the run. According to the Chief Minister, Bikram used his motorcycle in the attack with Avtar riding pillion. It was Avtar who lobbed the grenade, Singh said. “It is just a matter of time that we catch him.” He said Bikram told his interrogators that the grenade was provided by one Happy in Pakistan. “Happy is suspected to be the Pakbased KLF chief Harmeet Singh Happy alias PhD, also the mastermind behind the targeted killings of RSS, Shiv Sena members, a pastor in Ludhiana and Dera Sacha Sauda workers Jalandhar in 2016-17.”

BJP leadership knew about attack on Kejriwal, wants him eliminated, alleges Sisodia

New Delhi :Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia Wednesday alleged that the BJP leadership had knowledge of the attack on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the opposition party wants the latter eliminated to stop him from working for the people. On Tuesday, a man flung chilli powder at Kejriwal outside his office in the Delhi Secretariat. The chief minister’s spectacles broke but he was not injured in the attack. The attacker, identified as Anil Kumar Sharma, has been arrested. “(Union) Home Minister Rajnath Singh called Kejriwal and asked him to file a complaint in the attack on

him. Is this the way an attack on a chief minister should be probed?” Sisodia asked at a press conference. Sharma’s Facebook profile shows that he

is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he said. The BJP had termed the incident as “drama” by Kejriwal, with its Delhi chief Manoj Tiwari demanding a high-level probe into it. “After failing to stop Kejriwal from working for the people of Delhi, now the BJP wants him eliminated.

BJP on CBI row: SC will decide if allegations against ministers and officials politically motivated

Hyderabad : The BJP said on Tuesday the Supreme Court is the right authority to examine whether the sensational charges brought by CBI DIG Manish Kumar Sinha against a Union minister and top officials has any substantive basis or is “politically motivated”. The feud within the CBI turned murkier on Monday with Sinha dragging the names of NSA Ajit Doval, Union minister Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary and CVC K V Chowdhury over alleged attempts to interfere in the probe against the agency’s Special Director Rakesh Asthana, who has also been divested of his duties and sent on leave by the government along with Director Alok Kumar Verma. BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao said the matter is “sub judice”, but took objection to “somebody serving in an organisation twisting the name of that organisation itself”. When

asked by reporters about the issue, he said, “The matter is sub judice. The Supreme Court is hearing the matter on a regular basis. The court apparently itself said there is no urgency to hear this particular complaint. Therefore, it is not proper for me to make a political comment.” Sinha, who was probing the FIR against

Asthana, the CBI’s number two, and important cases like the PNB scam involving Nirav Modi, made a litany of sensational allegations in his petition before the Supreme Court that sought urgent hearing for quashing his transfer to Nagpur. “The court itself did not see any merit or emergency in the allegations being made.

PDP, NC and Congress set to join hands to form govt in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar : A day after senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig threw his weight behind BJP ally Sajad Lone for cobbling up the third front, the three major mainstream political parties — PDP, NC and Congress — have decided to join hands to form the government. Senior PDP leader and former Finance Minister Altaf Bukhari is the frontrunner for the post of chief minister. Sources said that while PDP president Mehbooba Mufti wanted Farooq Abdullah to lead the alliance, National Conference has decided not to be part of the government and support the PDP-

Congress alliance from outside. Sources said Bukhari is the consensus candidate for the CM’s post. “The alliance would likely be announced by the evening and after that, the alliance partners would meet the Governor and stake claim,” a senior PDP leader told repoter.A senior NC leader said the two rival parties have joined hands to protect the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. The leader said while the three major political parties have decided to cobble alliance there is every apprehension that the Centre would ask the Governor to dissolve the Assembly, thus stalling the process.

Underlining that corruption was peaking under PM Narendra Modi, Singh said while the effects of demonetisation could not be reversed, people should take every step to throw out the government.

Manmohan Singh: Used harsh words against Modi, shouldn’t have done it

New Delhi : Former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said he used “harsh words” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and should not have done it, referring to his comments in 2014, where he had said Modi would be a disaster to the country. “I used harsh words which I should not have. Now people will make the decision,” he said at a press conference in Indore. Advertising Singh accused Modi of misusing the PM’s post. “It does

not befit the PM to abuse political opponents,” he said, adding Modi was using “unparliamentary words”

against the opposition. Stepping up the attack against the BJP-led government on Rafale, former prime

minister Manmohan Singh questioned its reluctance in forming a joint parliamentary committee to probe the deal. Singh said it proved that the government had something to hide. “The people of the country are suspicious of the Rafale deal. The opposition and various groups are demanding a joint parliamentary committee but Modi government isn’t ready for it. Isse pata lagta hai daal mai kuchh kaala hai,” he said at a press conference in Indore.

FIR against Somnath Bharti after scrap with news anchor

New Delhi : Delhi police registered an FIR against AAP MLA Somnath Bharti Wednesday for allegedly abusing a TV news anchor. “An anchor of a Noidabased news channel lodged the complaint against Bharti under IPC sections 504 (breach of peace) and 509 (outraging the modesty of a woman). We have taken cognizance of

the complaint and will take down statements of both the anchor and the lawmaker. The complainant has also submitted a video as proof of the alleged verbal abuse,” Sita Singh, in-charge of Noida’s women police station, said. Bharti, however, claimed that his voice was doctored. “My face is not visible in the debate.

Barriers to Indian firms achieving high growth

India’s business landscape poses myriad growth and productivity questions. The dominance of the informal sector and micro and small enterprises mean that much of the economy is off the books. Sectoral and job creation policies must consequently deal with many variables that are difficult to pin down. And then there is the dwarf enterprise syndrome— small companies that do not grow in time but remain stunted. A new World Bank report, HighGrowth Firms: Fact, Fiction and Policy Options for Emerging Economies, sheds light on many of these issues. The report’s premise is deceptively simple. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development defines high-growth firms (HGFs) as those that employ more than 10 workers, with employment growing at an average annual rate of 20% or more over at least three consecutive years. This is a fairly high bar in the Indian economic landscape. The sixth economic census, released in 2016, showed that 131.29 million people were employed in 58.5 million enterprises. That means the pool of HGFs is small indeed. The World Bank report bears this out using two data sets. For large, registered firms, it uses the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy’s Prowess database. For small, household enterprises on the other hand—that is, most of them—it uses the India Human Development Survey conducted in 2004-05 and 2011-12. The report finds that for the emerging economies it examines, HGFs account for 8-22% of the total number of firms; India falls somewhere near the middle with 14.3%. The interesting—and troubling—aspect is just how heavily disproportionate HGFs’ contribution to output growth is. Across the economies in question, this can range from 49% to a massive 83%. India fares relatively well, coming in at the lower bound of that bracket. That said, this still highlights important challenges. First, while HGFs don’t appear to have much horizontal spillover, they do have vertical spillovers. This means they affect upstream and downstream enterprises positively. A World Bank paper by Ejaz Ghani, Stephen D. O’Connell and Gunjan Sharma, Friend or Foe or Family? A Tale of Formal and Informal Plants in India, bears this out using establishment data from 600 districts in India. This means that when small, informal enterprises and large, formal enterprises are able to integrate effectively in supply chains, the barriers that the former face in achieving high productivity growth are lowered. However, there are several barriers here. Given their smaller balance sheets and less scope for accessing credit, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) depend to a large extent on timely cash payments from the large companies they supply to in order to function effectively.

Mohammad Shahzad sets T10 league on fire with 16-ball 74

Mohammad Shahzad’s 74 which featured two singles, 6 fours and 8 sixes is also the highest score by an individual batsman in T10 league so far. Washington: :Afghanistan batsman Mohammad Shahzad set the 10 league on fire after smashing an unbeaten 74 off just 16 balls in the tournament opener on Monday. His blazing innings helped the Rajputs beat the Sindhis by 10 wickets in Dubai. Batting first the Sindhis scored 94/6 in 10 overs. In reply, Brendon McCullum (21 off 8) along with Shahzad tonked the bowlers all round the ground and reached the target in just 24 balls (16 minutes). 1 464461664644 6 6 6 – was the sequence of Shahzad’s knock (2 singles, 6 fours, 8 sixes). 74 is also the highest score in T10 league by a batsman. While his fifty came up in just 12 deliveries, what is most

astonishing is not a single dot ball was faced. In fact there was only one dot in Rajput’s innings as they romped home with 36 balls to spare. Earlier, Rajputs won the toss and elected to field. Karachi failed to get off to a good start but Shane Watson’s quickfire 42 helped them reach 94/6 in 10 overs. But the game was over in a matter of minutes as Shahzad went on a rampage and Sindhis finished their innings with a run rate of 24. Earlier, in a chat with PTI 30-yearold Shahzad had spoken about his stocky built and fitness regime and said, “Dekhiye hum fitness bhi poori karte hain aur khaate bhi poora hain (I work a lot on my fitness but I don’t compromise on food).

Facebook’s Zuckerberg says he is not considering resigning

Washington: Embattled Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Tuesday he has no plans to resign, sounding defiant after a rough year for the social platform. “That’s not the plan,” Zuckerberg told CNN Business when asked if he would consider stepping down as chairman. He also defended Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, who has drawn criticism over her handling of the social media giant’s recent crises. “Sheryl is a really important part of this company and is leading a lot of the efforts for a lot of the biggest issues we have,” said Zuckerberg. “She’s been an important partner to me for 10 years. I’m really proud of the work we’ve done together and I hope that

we work together for decades more to come.” Facebook has stumbled from one mess to another this year as it grappled with continuing fallout from Russia’s use of the platform to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election, the Cambridge Analytica scandal in which user data was harnessed in a bid to help candidate Donald Trump, and a huge security breach involving millions of accounts. Most recently, an investigative piece published last week by The New York Times said Facebook misled the public about what it knew about Russia’s election meddling and used a PR firm to spread negative stories about other Silicon Valley companies and thus deflect anger away from itself.

Virat Kohli said that they thought Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik would lead India to victory, but things turned around after Pant’s dismissal.

Rishabh Pant’s dismissal was turning point, says Virat Kohli New Delhi : India started their Australian tour with a defeat as the hosts secured a four-run win in the rain-hit opening T20 International in Brisbane on Wednesday. Electing to bowl first, Indians were sloppy in the field. Capitalising on it, Australia crossed the 150-run mark in the 16th over before play was interrupted due to rain. Glenn Maxwell was the star performer of the day as he smashed 46 runs in just 24 balls. After the interruption, umpires decided to revise the total and India were asked to chase 174 runs in 17 overs. Right from the beginning, India lost wickets at crucial junctions, which eventually gave the hosts a four-run win over the in-form Indian team. Speaking after the match, Indian skipper Virat Kohli made his assessment and said, “It was a close game, exciting one for the crowd to watch and for the

players as well. Was a see-saw battle.” He stated that the tumble in the middle overs was one of the primary reasons behind the defeat. Kohli also said that at one point he believed Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik would lead

India to victory, but things turned around after Pant’s dismissal. “We started well with the bat, fumbled in the middle overs, in the end we thought we’ll win with Pant and Karthik but it changed again with Pant’s dismissal.”

Panasonic eyes Rs 140 crore sales from bluetooth trackers business

New Delhi: Japanese tech giant Panasonic Wednesday said it expects to clock sales to the tune of Rs 140 crore in the next one year from its bluetooth-based trackers that have been conceptualised and designed by its team in India. The company, which launched two versions of its tracker ‘Seekit’ priced Rs 1,299 onwards, will start selling the devices online from the first week in December. “We are starting with a small device and this will be built up into a larger ecosystem. While the market is still at a nascent stage, there is a strong potential not only in the consumer segment but also enterprise...we expect sales of Rs 140 crore in the first year,” Panasonic India and South Asia President and CEO Manish Sharma told PTI. He added that using their mobile phones, users can find out the location of keys and other items to which the tracker can be attached to. Since the device has

bi-directional tracking feature, it also allows users to find their phone by double pressing the button on the tracker. If users leave their phone behind, Seekit will ‘buzz and glow’, reminding the user to go get it, Sharma said adding users can also click selfies using the device. Seekit also allows users to send

SOS alerts with their GPS location to three selected contacts by pressing the button on the device. The devices have a battery life of 12-18 months. Apart from consumers, Panasonic sees a huge potential in the enterprise segment. “We are also talking to companies like luggage makers and car makers to embed our technology in various products,” he said. Sharma said reports suggest that globally the beacon market (including marketing potential) is expected to touch USD 14.8 billion by 2024. Currently, the market size is about 30 million units globally. Beacon is a device designed to attract attention to a specific location. “We are focusing on both Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence-based solutions at our India Innovation Centre. The launch of Seekit is strategically aligned to our objective to create a smart and connected ecosystem,” Sharma said.

Shah, Kataria, Dinesh M N, Pandiyan and Vanzara —- who were all named as accused in the case —- were discharged by the trial court between 2014 and 2017. Tamgadge also claimed that Call Data Records (CDRs)

of the accused had established their conspiracy to commit the offence. During crossexamination, the officer agreed to the suggestion that CDRs are one of the best evidence to determine a person’s location at a particular time. Haribhai, a diamantaire-turnedpolitician caught in CBI feud

Gandhinagar : In an affidavit filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation DIG Manish Kumar Sinha in the Supreme Court on Monday challenging his transfer, he dragged four highprofile names into the ongoing CBI feud. And one of them was Union minister Haribhai Chaudhary who has been accused of receiving “a few crore rupees”. Haribhai Chaudhary, 63, was introduced by the BJP in Banskantha district in the 1990s to challenge the cult-like influence of Congress leader Parthibhai Chaudhary. “Congress was very strong in Banaskantha district with the leadership of powerful cooperative sector leader Parthibhai Chaudhary and state Congress leader B K Gadhvi,” said a senior BJP leader. Haribhai, who didn’t rise from the ranks, entered

the Lok Sabha in 1998 and went on to become Parliamentarian for three more times in the elections held in 1999, 2013 and 2014. A diamantaire from Palanpur, Haribhai initially worked for a diamond company in Mumbai. His political elevation was seen as a huge boost to the diamond industry centred in Palanpur and Surat. Chaudharys are a powerful and politically influential OBC community from North Gujarat. They are also known as Aanjna Patels in Gujarat. Haribhai Chaudhary rose to the level of vice-president in Gujarat BJP. But his political career was not always looking up. He lost two successive Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2009 when the Congressled UPA came to power.

name people whose CDRs established the conspiracy, Tamgadge said, “The CDRs of (Amit) Shah, Dinesh MN, Vanzara, Pandiyan, Vipul Agarwal, Ashish Pandya, N H Dabhi, G S Rao.” Of them, Pandya, Dabhi and Rao continue to face trial; the others have been discharged for lack of evidence. The CBI had included calls between these men, before and after the alleged offence, in its chargesheet.

Beijing : A US government report ahead of a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping accuses China of stepping up hacking aimed at stealing American technology as a tariff dispute escalated. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer’s report reflects US skepticism and a possible source of new acrimony ahead of the meeting in Buenos Aires aimed at defusing the dispute companies worry will chill global economic growth. The two sides have raised import duties on billions of dollars of each other’s goods in the fight over US complaints Beijing steals or pressures companies to hand over technology. Chinese officials dump chemicals in river ahead of govt inspection on pollution

Beijing : Officials in Weifang city in China’s eastern Shandong Province have been caught throwing USD 6.8 million worth of chemicals into a river ahead of a government inspection to mask pollution problem, according to a state-run media report. Weifang city and its Binhai Economic and Technologic Development Zone mainly relied on throwing chemicals into the Weitan River in order to tackle the pollution, which basically did not show any effect, the central environmental inspection group found over the weekend, the Ministry of Ecology and Environmental (MEE) said in a statement. The chemicals could hide pollutants and improve the water quality over the short term, which allowed the project to pass the approval process in July, state-run Global Times quoted the statement as saying Wednesday. However, in August the river water quality worsened again. The problem was found by the central environmental inspection group. The group found the pollution issue of the river during its inspection in 2017, after which the provincial government made a management plan, vowing to eliminate pollution in the river before June 2018.

Seoul : South Korea said Wednesday it will dissolve a foundation funded by Japan to compensate South Korean women who were forced to work in Japan’s World War II military brothels. The widely expected decision, if carried out, would effectively kill a controversial 2015 agreement to settle a decades-long impasse over the sexual slavery issue and threatens to aggravate a bitter diplomatic feud between the Asian U.S. allies over history. Many in South Korea believed the Seoul government settled for far too less in the sex slave deal and that Japan still hasn’t acknowledged legal responsibility for atrocities during its colonial occupation of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono sharply criticized South Korea’s decision to shut down the foundation, saying that Seoul would violate the “most basic rule to live in the international society” by walking back on the deal. Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Akiba summoned South Korean Ambassador to Japan Lee Su-hoon to the ministry to lodge a protest.
