An NGO has alleged that girls and women were kept at the “university” for 14 years and more.

Are only politicians let to talk: Cong uproar bars Sachin from speaking in RS

New Delhi: The moment Bharat Ratna and Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar rose to speak in the House after it re-convened at 2 pm, Congress members once again created ruckus in the house leading to an adjournment for the day. The proceedings were disrupted by the Opposition for the fifth consecutive day where they have been demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clarify on his remarks against former prime minister Manmohan Singh during the Gujarat poll campaign. Cricket legend Sachin had moved a Short Discussion Motion on the future of sports in the country and right to play. His maiden speech in the House was, however, marred with the Congress stalling the session. Amid the Opposition sloganeering, Sachin remained standing for about ten minutes, tight-lipped, as Opposition members raised slogans ignoring Chairman Venkaiah Naidu’s calls to come to order. Naidu reminded the parliamentarians that the nation was watching the uproar they were causing in the Rajya Sabha and called on them to let Sachin speak.

The trial in the case started six years ago after the Comptroller and Auditor General exposed in 2010 that 122 2G licences had been given to telecom operators at throwaway prices without a free and fair bidding process, causing a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore....

CBI court acquits A Raja, Kanimozhi and all other accused New Delhi : A special CBI court on Thursday acquitted former telecom minister A Raja, DMK supremo Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi and other accused of all charges in the 2G spectrum allocation cases — famously known as 2G ‘scam’ and often described as the biggest corruption scandal in India. All the acquitted in the case have to, however, furnish a bail bond of Rs 5 lakh each to ensure their presence in a higher appellate court if the verdict is challenged. The alleged scam came to light in 2010 when the then Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai alleged that 122 2G licences were given to telecom operators at throwaway prices without a free and fair bidding process, causing a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the national exchequer.

2G case verdict proves ‘massive propaganda against UPA was without foundation’ Manmohan Singh Thursday welcomed the Special CBI court’s verdict in the 2G spectrum allocation case, and said he was “glad the court has pronounced that the massive propaganda against UPA was without any foundation.” “I think the judgment has to be respected. I am glad that the court has pronounced unambiguously that all this massive propaganda which was being run against the UPA government was without any foundation,” the former prime minister said, in response to the special CBI court acquitting all 17 accused in the case. The court earlier today acquitted all accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case, including former telecom minister A Raja and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi.

govt should appeal in HC against acquittals: Swamy Subramanian Swamy on Thursday said the government should appeal in high court against the acquittals in the 2G spectrum scam case. The CBI probe in the case was ordered after Swamy had filed a PIL. In a statement to the media in New Delhi, Swamy said: “This is not a setback at all, it’s an aberration as the law officers were not serious on fighting against corruption.

Jaitley slams Congress, says party treating this judgment as ‘badge of honour’ Shortly after the 2G spectrum allocation case verdict was pronounced by a special CBI court in New Delhi on Thursday, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today slammed the Congress for treating this judgment as a ‘badge of honour’. In a statement to the media, Jaitley said: “Congress leaders are treating this judgement as some kind of a badge of honour and a certification that it was an honest policy. This was a corrupt and dishonest policy, which has already been upheld by the Supreme Court in 2012.” Jaitley further said that the Supreme Court had in 2012 quashed the policy as arbitrary and unfair.

China has been consistently blocking moves by India, the US, the UK and France to designate Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.

Name’s Azhar and he’s not a global terrorist: China blocks India’s move again

Beijing: China has rejected India’s assertion that moves at the United Nations to list terror group Jaishe-Mohammed leader Masood Azhar as a global terrorist were blocked due to narrow political considerations, saying it acted in a “candid way” over the issue based on rules and procedures. China has been consistently blocking moves by India, the US, the UK and France to designate Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the 1267 Sanctions Committee by putting technical holds. India’s permanent representative

to the United Nations Syed Akbaruddin, during an open debate Wednesday in the Security Council criticised some UN members for failing to “clearly understand” the common threat of terrorism. “It is noticed that on an

issue as serious as designation of terrorist individuals and entities, the Council-mandated Sanctions Committees fail to make concrete progress and fall victim to narrow political and strategic concerns in some cases,” he said. Responding

to Mr Akbaruddin’s remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing that on Masood Azhar’s issue China had “acted in a candid way with ease”. “So what we do is nothing to do with the narrow minded political considerations as you mentioned,” Ms Hua claimed. The issue of China blocking the listing of Masood Azhar at the United Nations is expected to come up in Friday’s 20th round of India-China border talks in New Delhi.

Yogi Adityanath all set to break ‘Noida jinx’, attend function on Saturday Lucknow : All set to break the so-called ‘Noida jinx’, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will attend a function in the satellite city in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Noida-Kalkaji Metro line on December 25. There is a superstition that any CM visiting Noida loses power and does not come back to assume office again. “Adityanath will not only be present at the inauguration ceremony with Prime Minister Naredra Modi on December 25, the birthday of former PM Atal Bihari Vajapyee, but also visit Noida on December 23 to take stock of preparations for the grand programme,” BJP spokesman Chandramohan said. “Our CM believes in working in the interest of people and does

not care for superstitions, which have prevented past CMs from going to Noida. With his visit he will also end the superstition attached with the place,” he said. Though Noida or Gautam Budh

Nagar district was developed from a cluster of small villages into the prime economic zone of the state, it has been avoided by past chief ministers. Adityanath’s predecessor Akhilesh Yadav

stayed away from Noida. He did not attend the Asian Development Bank Summit organised there in May 2013 though then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was the chief guest. Akhilesh Yadav had launched the Rs 3,300 crore development projects, including access to six-lane Yamuna Expressway, through video link from Lucknow. The family members of Dadri lynching victim Mohammad Ikhlaq were brought to Lucknow from there to meet Akhilesh Yadav. Before him, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Kalyan Singh and Rajnath Singh too avoided going to Noida. The superstition attached with Noida began with then CM Veer Bahadur Singh, who was asked to step down in June 1988 by the central leadership.

Kulbhushan under no threat of immediate execution, says Pakistan

New Delhi : Rejecting rumours that December 25 would be the last meeting between Kulbhushan Jadhav and his family, Pakistan on Thursday, said that the death row “convict” is under no threat of immediate execution as his mercy petition is still pending for review. Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer, was arrested in Pakistan and was charged with espionage. Foreign Office spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal also added that a media interaction with the family could be arranged if India permits. Addressing a weekly media briefing in Islamabad, Faisal said, “Let me assure you that the Commander (Jadhav) is under no threat of immediate execution and his mercy petitions are still pending. Pakistan is ready to permit media interaction with the wife and mother of Commander Jadhav. We await Indian decision in this regard.” Reiterating that the family has been allowed in the light of “Islamic traditions and based on purely humanitarian grounds,” Faisal added that the meeting will take place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad. An Indian envoy would be allowed to accompany the visitors in Islamabad. The Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on Wednesday issued visas to Jadhav’s mother and his wife. They are expected to arrive in Pakistan on Saturday.

The South Asian agenda has been reduced : public The 32-year-old SAARC scarcely registers in our foreign policy debate, which is preoccupied with the exciting prospect of India’s role in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. The South Asian agenda has been reduced, at least in public perception, to countering Pakistan and its terror proxies. The Partition curtailed our territory and resources, severed trade and travel routes and was followed by horrendous violence. With the centuries-old tradition of rulers of India dominating the geo-strategic space in South Asia, independent India sought to exclude external powers from the region. There was also a nostalgic reaction from a section that raised the slogan of Akhand Bharat — a concept ranging from the undoing of Partition to a loosely-defined cultural unity covering South Asia and beyond. Both these ideals were belied in subsequent years. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee buried the idea of undoing Partition during his visit to Lahore in February 1999 by visiting Minar-e-Pakistan, which symbolises the creation of Pakistan. He also propounded the forward-looking approach of developing trust, confidence and creating “a solid structure of cooperation”. Manmohan Singh carried this thinking forward in presenting a vision of South Asia where, with the cooperation of all our neighbours, we move from poverty to prosperity, ignorance to knowledge and insecurity to lasting peace. Instead of pursuing the unrealistic goal of undoing Partition, this approach sought to leverage the large Indian economy in building mutually beneficial trade, economic and other linkages within South Asia. Pakistan, though the largest obstacle to the emergence of a cohesive South Asia, is not the only one. An example is our inability so far to push through a sub-regional Motor Vehicle Agreement with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh after Pakistan blocked a similar arrangement at the SAARC. Such hurdles are inherent in any process involving sovereign nations. A moribund SAARC is not in our interest. Sub-regional and other arrangements such as BIMSTEC, though valuable, are no substitute as these leave out our troublesome western periphery. If SAARC is a broken-down vehicle, we need another instrument, but cannot ignore or abandon the task of building a largely cohesive and stable periphery, which is essential to prevent meddling by external powers and realise our legitimate aspirations in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. We cannot dictate the actions of our neighbours. But we do need to pay more attention to certain aspects within our control. First, our ability to manage our region and stature in the world depend to a considerable degree upon economic success. The continent-sized Indian economy, growing at around 6 per cent, holds a tremendous attraction for our neighbours. Imagine its lure, even for business and industry in an otherwise hostile Pakistan, when it was growing at 8 to 10 per cent, Second, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s assurance in an address in December 2014 that realising its special responsibility in driving the locomotive of South Asian growth, India would “continue to institutionalise positive asymmetry in favour of our neighbours and allow all to benefit from our economy and market”, should be the leitmotif of our South Asia policies.

Katrina also called Aamir Khan one of the brightest minds in the country, and said that Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan are one of the best talents in the country and that she gets to learn a lot from these superstars. “Why wouldn’t I want to learn from them? Sunny Leone draws inspiration from 70s beauties Sharmila Tagore, Zeenat Aman, Rekha and others

Sunny Leone once again courted controversy over her cancelled New Year event ‘Sunny Nights’ in Bengaluru. The entire hullabaloo was created as some Pro Kannada groups who claimed that Sunny doesn’t fit into the Kannada ‘culture’ and quoted her ‘history’ as their reason for protesting against the show. After the police denied to provide security, Sunny cancelled the show and came up with a perfect reply to the miscreants on social media. And now the actor has talked about her inspiration in life which comes from yesteryear Bollywood divas Sharmila Tagore, Dimple Kapadia, Mandakini, Rekha, Zeenat Aman and Madhubala who dared to go against the set norms back in their era. They taught her “it’s perfectly ok to be myself.”

From ‘Bhabhi’ to ‘Maa’ –ShilpaShinde has come a long way in Bigg Boss 11

For years, she graced the small screen with myriad roles and characters. Her portrayal as India’s favorite Bhabhi brought her into limelight and soon Shilpa Shinde became a household name. This year, her entry in Bigg Boss 11 made headlines and since then, the ‘marathimulgi’ has taken the small screen by storm! Taking on the responsibility of the kitchen, Shilpa ensured that everyone in the house was well fed and taken care off. Mega Star Salman Khan also acknowledged this and referred to her as ‘Maa’ of Bigg Boss 11. Also, cracking jokes around the 6000 rotisshe has made for the gharwale. While her arguments with Vikas kept every one of their toes, it was her forgiving and understanding nature that led Vikas to apologize for his past behavior and soon the two buried the hatchet.

Shraddha gets flak for fake Indian Army pic; here are others who got trolled in 2017 Social media has always made us very censorious and 2017 wasn’t any different. Be it grammatical errors or fashion faux pas, none of it goes unnoticed, especially when they are posted by celebrities. Most often, these posts are dealt with intense scrutiny and even sarcastic and sardonic comments. Even when the post comes as an innocent or honest mistake, twitteratis are seldom in the mood to let go of it, and the most recent celebrity to bear the brunt of it was none other than Bollywood actress Shraddha Kapoor. She went on to tweet about the Indian Army soldiers posted at Siachen Glacier. The actress posted a picture of soldiers withstanding the extreme cold weather and she wrote, “They freeze to make sure that we are warm. They protect to make sure that we feel safe. Can never thank you Jawaans enough.” The sentiment behind sharing such a picture was genuine but what she did not realise was that the picture she shared was a fake one.

Suresh Raina clears Yo-Yo test ahead of Virat Kohli-led India’s South Africa tour

www.sunvillasamachar.com

Sports Special The Haryana spinner is ending the year on a high.

Team India leggie Chahal becomes highest wicket-taker in T20s for 2017 Kohli, Pujara key in South Africa as India aim to reach ‘iconic place’: Graeme Smith

Mumbai: Overlooked Indian cricketer Suresh Raina on Thursday confirmed through Twitter that he has passed the Yo-Yo fitness test. The Saurashtra batsman, who last played a match for India against England in a T20 in February, had failed the fitness test in August, and thus was not eligible for selection in the national side. Later in October, it was made mandatory by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that passing the Yo-Yo test was a requirement for selection in the Indian team. However, at that time Suresh Raina was not the only cricketer who failed the test. Yuvraj Singh had suffered the same fate, as he too failed to clear the test. However, Cheteshwar Pujara was deemed to be fit and had passed the test. Rohit Sharma is currently leading a Virat Kohli-less side in a T20 series against Sri Lanka. Captain Kohli will be back for India’s tour to South Africa, starting with the first Test on January 4.

Cuttack: Team India registered their biggest margin win in the T20 format on Wednesday after bundling out Sri Lanka for a paltry 87 in the first T20 at the Barabati Stadium here, eventually winning by 93 runs. During the second innings, it was Yuzvendra Chahal that spearheaded the Indian bowling attack, becoming the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-23. The leggie spun a web around the Sri Lanka batsmen that saw the Men in Blue snatch the game from Thisara Perera’s men right under their noses. Not only did the Haryana spinner emerge as the

Man of the Match, but also became the highest wicket-taking bowler in the shortest format this year. With 19 wickets to his name in the calendar year, he has surpassed Rashid Khan and Kesrick Williams to grab the top spot. The 93-run win is India’s biggest win in T20 Internationals, bettering the 90run victory over England recorded in Colombo in September 2012 during the ICC World T20 in Sri Lanka. Sent into bat, Rahul’s classy fifty and some sensible batting from Mahendra Singh Dhoni (39 not out) and Manish Pandey (32 not out) powered India

to a challenging total of 180 for three. Chahal then finished with brilliant figures of 4 for 23, taking a wicket in each of his four overs to lead Sri Lanka’s downfall as the visitors were bundled out for 87 in 16 overs on a dew-laden Barabati Stadium. After the leg-spinner’s guile, it was Kuldeep Yadav’s turn to get into the act with figures of 2 for 18 as the wrist spin duo once again did the job for India. It was yet another pathetic batting show by the Sri Lankans, who showed little resistance as wickets kept tumbling after Upul Tharanga’s 16-ball 23-run burst.

New Delhi: Former captain Graeme Smith feels South Africa’s “powerful” bowling attack will put the Indian batting line-up under serious pressure in the upcoming Test series, starting January 5 in Cape Town. The world no.1 Indian team up against second-placed South Africa in their own den certainly makes for an exciting contest. And Smith feels South Africa will be extra motivated after their painful 0-3 loss in India couple of seasons ago. “I think South Africa will be very strong. With AB de Villiers coming back, their batting looks a lot stronger. The bowling too is really powerful. They have got four really outstanding experienced pacers to choose from and couple of young pacers as well,” Smith told news agancy.“Eventually, I think they will only go with three seamers and a spinner (in Keshav Maharaj) and six batters with Quinton de Kock at seven. That will be their batting line-up and I think that is a powerful one,” he said. Smith, however, said the scheduling of the first Test in Cape Town could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the under prepared visitors.

Will need govt incentives to fulfil India’s EV dream: IndiGo commences ATR operations, Maruti Suzuki launches HyderabadMangalore flight

New Delhi: India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki said on Thursday that government incentives will be needed to make electric vehicles (EVs) affordable as the country moves towards the eco-friendly solution for mobility. The company, which plans to launch its first EV in India by 2020, also said it will conduct a study to find consumer insights to prepare for the journey. Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Chairman R C Bhargava said affordability is a major challenge that EVs will face and for them to be successful, focus has to be on manufacturing of batteries and other components within the country to bring down cost. “I think it will be required... My gut feeling is that yes, some kind of intervention would be required but I don’t know to what extent,” he told reporters when asked if government incentives would be needed to support electric vehicles transition in India. As electric vehicles are a new development for the Indian auto industry it would be difficult to say in details how much government support would be needed, he added. The company will conduct a study to understand more about consumer insights on electric vehicles, which will also help in estimating how much of government support will be needed, he said. “Before that I can’t really say with any kind of confidence that this the kind of government intervention is required,” Bhargava said. The aim of the study would be to find out as to what is the ground reality, where people park their cars and charging infrastructure and what is their thinking about EVs, he said. “It will gauge what average consumer thinks about EVs. This survey is going to provide us the first reliable data from the ground. We will start it within two to three weeks and by about end of February we would have some authentic basis to answer queries on EVs,” Bhargava said. Stressing on the need for cost of electric cars to be within the reach of consumers, he said, “75 per cent of cars are small cars

For most of them, political party was more important than candidates. For example, Ahmedabad students Dhruv Shah (22), Ashay Haldar (21) and Hetvi Badiani (21), it was the party’s outlook on development that determined their vote, irrespective of the faces, be their national or local leaders. “I voted for the party, which can provide better services in public transport, cleanliness and sanitation, safe drinking water, security to citizens and so on after forming the government,” said Vishal Acharya (20), an engineering student at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU). On other hand, Pranay Thakkar (20), Aashi Patel (19) and Nishtha Kedia (20), who come from business families, said that they voted for the party, whose “policies aid in business ease and growth”.

The various initiatives include a worldwide food distribution drive for the under-privileged,the organization of free medical camps to check for elevated blood pressure and diabetes, vaccinations and eye and dental check-ups.
