UP Minister explained that a person’s lineage can be deciphered by noting their behaviour.

First Dalit, then Muslim, now a UP minister says Lord Hanuman was ‘jaat’ Lucknow: Opining that Lord Hanuman belonged to the Jaat community, Uttar Pradesh Minister for Religious Affairs Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary joined the debate surrounding the identity of the Hindu deity. The state minister likened the Hindu god’s characteristics to that of a person belonging to the Jaat community. “I think Hanuman ji was a Jaat, because upon seeing someone being troubled a Jaat also jumps in even without knowing the issue or the people. In this sense Hanuman ji’s behaviour was very similar to that of Jaat because following Goddess Sita’s abduction by Raavan he immediately came to Lord

Ram’s help as his follower,” UP Cabinet Minister Laxmi Narayan told ANI on Friday. Chaudhary, who also holds charge of Dairy Development,

Culture, Minority Welfare, Muslim Waqf and Haj, further explained that a person’s lineage can be deciphered by noting their behaviour. “Everyone who believes in the Sanatan Dharm would surely worship Lord Hanuman. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has already given explanation on this issue.

The Special CBI court in Mumbai acquitted all the 22 accused in Sohrabuddin encounter case due to lack of evidence.

All 22 accused in Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case acquitted

Mumbai: All the 22 accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case have been acquitted by Special CBI Court in Mumbai on Friday due to lack of evidence. Special CBI judge said that the witnesses and proofs were not satisfactory to prove conspiracy and murder in the 2005 encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh,

his wife Kausar Bi and aide Tulsiram Prajapati. The court said that the government machinery and prosecution put in a lot of effort and 210 witnesses were brought but satisfactory evidence didn’t come and witnesses turned hostile. “No fault of prosecutor if witnesses don’t speak,” the special CBI court said. The court

said that allegation that Tulsiram Prajapati was murdered through a conspiracy is “not true”. Special CBI Judge S J Sharma ruled the prosecution has failed to put forth any “documentary and substantive evidence” to suggest or establish the alleged conspiracy. Of the accused, 21 are junior-level police officials from Gujarat and Rajasthan. The other was the owner of a farm house in Gujarat where Shaikh and Kausar Bi were illegally detained before they were allegedly killed. The Gujarat police claimed that Sohrabuddin Sheikh was killed in an encounter in November 2005. The police said that Sohrabuddin Sheikh was linked with terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and was allegedly conspiring to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was then the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

According to an official, despite the powers, unlike phone conversations, it is not easy to intercept Internet communication. Another complication is that most of these companies do not have servers in India.

Monitoring computers and intercepting data is not new, nor is it easy New Delhi : The Centre’s order to authorise 10 agencies to monitor online communications and intercept data contained in any computer system is not new. And according to intelligence sources, intercepting

online communication and monitoring computer systems is not as easy as the Opposition has alleged. In fact, agencies have been conducting surveillance on internet communication for several years now, particularly in matters related to

Delhi HC dismisses Sajjan Kumar’s plea seeking more time to surrender

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Friday dismissed a plea filed by 1984 anti-Sikh riots convict Sajjan Kumar seeking more time to surrender. Kumar had moved the court seeking an additional 30 days for surrendering ahead of the December 31 deadline. The former Congress leader was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the court in a case pertaining to killing five members of a family during the riots. The High Court while hearing the plea said that it sees no ground for granting an extension of time to Sajjan Kumar to surrender. Reversing the orders of the trial court, which had acquitted the former Congress legislator, the court found him guilty

of the murders in the aftermath of then prime minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination. A bench of Justice

S Muralidhar and Justice Vinod Goel also made clear that Kumar’s life imprisonment will be for the remainder of his life. After the verdict, Kumar tendered his resignation from the primary membership of Congress. Kumar was acquitted by a special CBI court on April 30, 2013, while it had held five other accused guilty of the crime.

No BJP ‘rath yatras’ in West Bengal for now, Calcutta HC overturns order

Kolkata: A day after a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court allowed BJP to take out its planned ‘rath yatra’ in West Bengal, another bench of the same court set aside the order in a setback to the saffron party. The division bench comprising Chief Justice Debasish Kargupta and Justice Shampa Sarkar send the case back to the single bench to consider intelligence inputs by state agencies. The BJP had received a green signal to hold rallies in West Bengal ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls from a singlejudge bench on Thursday which quashed the state government’s decision to refuse permission for the rallies over apprehensions of communal unrest. Better sense prevails on angel tax proposal

It seemed that the bogey of the angel tax was refusing to die, its latest appearance being in the form of a renewed batch of income-tax notices to founders of startups seeking copies of tax and transaction details about investments by venture capitalists. This was the second time such notices were being sent out by the taxman since the imposition this February of a 30.9% tax on investments by external investors in startups. The incidence of the tax—on valuations deemed above fair value—permitted scope for discretion and, naturally, did not sit well in India’s startup ecosystem. The subjectivity creeps in from the manner in which startups are valued—on the discounted cash flow model, which ignores intangibles like goodwill and leads to differing perceptions about fair value. A tax notice can be particularly worrisome for a company still trying to find its feet in a hyper-competitive market. The attention of the taxman would have seriously upset plans to raise funds from foreign investors who have a very wide field to choose from. The allround clamour against such unwelcome interest was, hence, disproportionate, and eminently avoidable. Thankfully, better sense seems to have prevailed. Late on Thursday, the Central Board of Direct Taxes ( CBDT) said it was “committed to promotion of startups in India” and that after a high-level meeting it decided that valuations would be on the basis of a committee of “eminent experts”. The CBDT added that “no coercive action/measures to recover the demands of completed assessment under Income Tax would be taken”. That’s a welcome step. An estimated 400 startups in India receive angel funding every year and commerce and industry minister Suresh Prabhu was quick to heed the outcry from the startup ecosystem over tax notices and he had taken up the issue with the finance ministry. The department of industrial policy and promotion pointed out anti-money laundering provisions in the Income Tax Act exempt investments by alternate investment funds, but there is no similar exemption for individual investors. The government cannot be, therefore, faulted for insisting startups register with it. And over 14,000 startups have done so, not all of them seeking tax concessions. The National Democratic Alliance government has reserved a special place in its economic agenda for startups. It is certainly not insensitive to their special needs and had in April provided tax concessions for investments, including those made by angel investors, apart from other income-tax benefits.

Katrina Kaif’s stardom is presented perfectly

In the video, Kaif plays an arrogant movie star and Shah Rukh’s Bauaa Singh is enchanted by her. Abhay Deol has a cameo in the film and he appears in this video as well. It appears as though Kaif and Deol have a romantic angle that has probably gone sour. Katrina looks stunning in the video and it looks like she has finally worked with a director who is going to make the most out of her acting abilities.

Barring the Commonwealth Games silver medal, it’s been a relatively lacklustre year for former World No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth.

Kidambi Srikanth: From World No. 1 to down a slippery slope

Mumbai : The first time he beat Lee Chong Wei in an Indian league match, Kidambi Srikanth had bristled at the tiny, but important victory wrongly being called ‘not a competitive match.’ Heading into the fourth season of the PBL while spearheading Bengaluru Blasters, Srikanth has scored that ‘competitive’ win against the legend this year — at the Commonwealth Games team finals, no less. He became the World No. 1 that same week, before his season became a slippery slope downhill, even as he’s learnt to skid to a stop and not fall over. India’s biggest success in men’s singles of the last decade, starts his campaign, cutting a far calmer frame than that jumpy kid who had slashed away at Chong Wei’s game with his explosive game, but wasn’t

mature enough back then in his sophomore year to deal with the flip side of fame and expectations. This edition sees India’s only Top 10 men’s shuttler who burst onto the scene as Lin Dan’s conqueror but took his time to consolidate thereafter, poised to perfection.

“It hasn’t been that great a year,” he says with measured pauses and no signs of snapping. “But I made quarters and semis consistently, so it’s not as bad as it looks,” he says. There was also the World No 1, tempered by “a few tough losses.”

Virat Kohli is as good as anyone I have seen, says Dennis Lillee

Mumbai: Legendary Australian seamer Dennis Lillee has heaped praise on India captain Virat Kohli while narrowing down characteristics that he possesses which make a batsman great. The Aussie bowler used to instill fear in batsmen with his sheer pace said Kohli’s ability to see the ball early and give himself that extra bit of time is as good as anyone. “I think he is a great player, There is no need for

me to even say because everyone knows that. What makes Virat great is first of all great technique, determination, balance and the time he has got to play the deliveries,” Lille was quoted as saying by Anandabazar Patrika. The fast bowling great added: “He seems to see the ball early and all great batsmen have those four things. Technique, determination, balance and the ability to see the ball early.

Steve Smith admits ‘making a big mistake’ with ball-tampering scandal Mumbai: Steve Smith has opened up for the first time since the ball-tampering scandal earlier in the year in South Africa which led to the then Australia captain being banned by the board until March 2019. In his first media address since facing the journalists at the Sydney Airport on return from South Africa, Smith admitted there were some dark days where he didn’t want to get out of bed. He credited the support of close friends and family in keeping him in good spirits. “I’m going OK,” Smith said at the SCG.”I’ve had tough days, I’ve had my ups and downs. But I’ve been really fortunate to have a close

group of people around me to help me through those difficult times,” he told reporters at the Sydney Cricket Ground. “There have been some dark days where I haven’t wanted to get out of bed and things like that. But I’ve had a close group of people around me to help me know that it’s OK. I’ve made a mistake and it was a big mistake and I’m trying to move on from that and improve as a person.” He also shed light on the details of the ball tampering attempt in itself. He said he had learned of the plan when he overheard a conversation in the team’s dressing room at Newlands.

New Delhi: The Centre on Thursday sought parliament’s nod for enhancingfundsearmarked for the recapitalisation of state-owned banks to Rs 1,06,000 crore from an earlier target of Rs 65,000 crore in the current financial year. This would enable infusion of over Rs 83,000 crore in the next few months in Public Sector Banks (PSBs), said a finance ministry official. The government is keen on boosting liquidity to the industry so that the economic growth could pick up and more jobs are created ahead of crucial Lok Sabha elections in 2019. New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday dismissed an appeal against its single judge order rejecting a plea challenging the LIC’s move to acquire 51 per cent stake in the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI). A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao said the single judge had considered all aspects before denying any relief to the All India IDBI Officers Association,

FinMin increases bank recap fund by Rs 35,000 crore Jaitley said, will enhance the lending capacity of state-owned banks and help them come out of the RBI’s Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework. Mr Jaitley said the recognition of non-performing assets in the public sector banks is complete, and the downslide in bad loans has begun. The finance ministry said that PSBs have alrea-dy recovered Rs 60,726 crore of the outstanding bad loans in the April-Sept-ember period, which it termed as a “record” haul. The ministry said that this recovery is more than double the amount recovered over the corresponding period last year.

which had opposed the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) move on the ground that change in shareholding could take away IDBI’s public sector bank status. The association, in its appeal, told the bench that LIC’s move to acquire 51 per cent stake in the IDBI violated provisions of the Insurance Act. The court, however, did not accept the contention and said if there was any violation of the Insurance

Act, then the association has to approach the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI). “We cannot hold any enquiry into whether the Insurance Act was violated. Go to IRDAI,” the bench said. The LIC, meanwhile, told the court that the amount it was investing in the bank was just one per cent of its entire funds and assured the bench that interests of its policy holders are protected.

Airtel, Ericsson claim 500 Mbps download speed on smartphones under new tech

New Delhi: Telecom operator Bharti Airtel and Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson on Friday claimed to have achieved broadband download speed of 500 Megabits per second (Mbps) on smartphones during live trial of a new technology. “During the trial, data download speeds of over 500 Mbps were recorded on smartphones in an indoor environment. In outdoor environment, peak download speed of more than 400 Mbps was achieved with coverage of about 180 meters from the base station. The trial was conducted in Delhi-NCR,” Airtel and Ericsson said in a joint statement. Both companies jointly

conducted India’s first trial of Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) technology over a live 4G network. LAA is a key technology wherein operators evolve their networks to achieve gigabit LTE (4G) by opening up previously

untapped resources of unlicensed spectrum delivering speeds once thought only possible over fiber. LAA enables the use of unlicensed spectrum in the 5 GHz band in combination with the licensed spectrum. “Airtel used one LTE 5 MHz carrier aggregated with three 20 MHz carriers of unlicensed spectrum. Together with 4CC carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO and 256 QAM technologies, the trial was conducted using Ericsson Radio System,” the statement said. Theoretically, a full high definition two-hour long video can be downloaded in about a minute and standard definition video in few seconds.

Mumbai: Budget carrier AirAsia India on Friday announced the induction of 20th aircraft in its fleet, making it eligible to fly on international routes. The Tata Sons-Air Asia invested joint venture airline also said it will add Mumbai in its network from early next year with the launch of daily flight services to the country’s financial hub from Bengaluru, starting January 15. This will be Malaysian airliner group’s third entry into the Mumbai market after discontinuing the services to the city first by AirAsia Berhad in 2012 and then by its subsidiary Indonesian AirAsia X in April this year. “We are pleased to make the much-awaited

announcement of adding Mumbai to our network. We’re also happy to welcome our 20th Airbus A320 aircraft to our fleet,” Sunil Bhaskaran, chief executive officer, AirAsia India, said in a release. The daily services on the Bengaluru-Mumbai route will commence from January 15, the airline said. Launched in June 2014, AirAsia India is 51 per cent owned by Tata Sons, while the remaining 49 per cent stake are held by Malaysian no-frills carrier AirAsia Berhad. The delivery of the 20th Airbus A320 plane to AirAsia will help it launch flight services in international markets as well.

Rupee slips 37 paise against US dollar in trade

The rupee opened lower at 69.93 against the dollar and dropped further to quote at 70.07, 37 paise down over its previous close. On Thursday the domestic currency appreciated

by 69 paise to close at 69.70 against the US dollar. Traders said a lower

From the airport, Modi left for the Statue of Unity near Kevadiya in Narmada district to attend the annual conference of DGPs and IGPs. The venue for the meet is a ‘tent-city’ set up near the 182-metre tall statue dedicated to country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The three-day event began on Thursday in the presence of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Before heading for the conference, Modi visited the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, which he had unveiled on October 31. Modi also paid floral tributes to Sardar Patel. The PM tweeted that the

discussions at the DGPs/IGPs conference would strengthen the country’s “security apparatus”. “Reached Kevadia

in Gujarat for the Conference of DGPs/IGPs. Looking forward to fruitful deliberations that will strengthen our security

apparatus,” he said in the tweet. “Paid tributes to the great Sardar Patel at the ‘Statue of Unity.’ As India’s Home Minister, his contribution towards building the framework of our security systems is immense,” the PM added. In another tweet, Modi urged the countrymen to visit the world’s tallest statue. “I would specially urge you all to visit Kevadia and see the ‘Statue of Unity’. Some friends told me that the Statue can also be seen during Delhi-Mumbai flights. So, next time you are flying that route do try to spot the Statue,” Modi said in another tweet. On Saturday, Modi is scheduled to address the BJP women’s wing workers on the last day of a national convention of the party’s Mahila Morcha at Trimandir, a temple complex near Adalaj village in Gandhinagar.

SB Energy, Fortum and Engie win entire 700 MW; lowest tariff goes up by 40 paise to Rs 2.84 per unit Living in rooms by looms: Fate of migrant workers in Surat

Foreign players sweep Gujarat solar auction

Vadodara : Foreign developers won the entire 700 MW being bid for at the solar auction conducted by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) on Friday, with the Softbankbacked SB Energy winning 250 MW at the lowest tariff of Rs 2.84 per unit. Finnish developer Fortum also bagged 250 MW while French major Engie got 200 MW, both bidding the same price of Rs 2.89 per unit. The last auction conducted by GUVNL in September for 500 MW had seen a lowest winning tariff of Rs 2.44 per unit. The rise of 40 paise has been welcomed by developers and analysts, as it had been feared for some time that developers in their zeal to win projects had been making unrealistically low bids. “That the tariff has gone up is an encouraging sign,” a

developer said. “It means that sanity has returned into the market. People are now pricing in the higher cost of capital, and the volatility of the currency,” the person said on condition of anonymity. Panels and modules used in Indian solar projects are mostly imported. Another

Rs 400-cr fisheries scam: Gujarat HC refuses to quash complaints against BJP minister, ex-minister

ahmedabad : In a blow to two BJP leaders — MoS Fisheries Parshottam Solanki and former minister Dileep Sanghani– the Gujarat High Court rejected their petitions seeking quashing of complaints against them in the alleged Rs 400 crore fisheries scam. The two, who were ministers in the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s government, had moved the high court in 2017 after the Gandhinagar district court took cognizance of the alleged offence and issued notices to them. “Court said that there is substance in the petition to entertain them. The HC was of the opinion that the lower court rightly issued notice and there is no need to interfere in the process,” said advocate Vikram Thakor, who appeared for complainant Ishaq Maradia. The district court, while issuing the summons, said there was enough material against the accused to be tried in the court, following which the accused moved the high court that stayed the proceedings of the lower court.

reason for the increased tariff is that the projects have to be located in a solar park, unlike those of the last auction, experts said. “The tariff is 40 paise higher because of solar park charges,” said Vinay Rustagi, managing director at solar consultancy Bridge To India.

Surat : Hadu Bahera owns a ‘home’ for 12-hours every day. During this time, the 51-year-old loom worker inhabits a sixby-three-feet space in a dingy room on Ved Road in north Surat. His co-worker uses the same space for the other 12 hours – depending on their shifts, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or the reverse. The occasional ‘holidays’ – when there is a power cut – are days to be dreaded. Nearly 60 workers must then fit into a 500-square feet room at Mahavir Mess, where Bahera is presently space-sharing. The summer months – when temperatures reach 40 degrees Celcius – are miserable.

international Japan’s govt approves record defence spending, seventh straight annual hike

Tokyo : Japan’s government approved a record defence budget on Friday that has expanded by almost 12 percent over seven years as Tokyo tries to counter growing Chinese military might in the East China Sea and guard against the threat posed by North Korean ballistic missiles. The budget for the year starting April 1 will rise 1.4 percent to 5.26 trillion yen ($48 billion). The budget request requires approval by parliament, where it has a majority. The biggest outlay is an initial 176 billion yen payment on two U.S.built, ground-based Aegis Ashore air defence radars that can track and target ballistic missiles in space. Japan will also spend 68 billion yen

to buy six F-35 fighters. Japan said in a midterm defence procurement plan last week it would order more advanced stealth fighters over the next several years, including short take-off and vertical landing versions to help bolster defences along its islands at the edge of the East China Sea. Japan also remains wary of North Korean promises to abandon nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, which it has described in a defence white paper as its “most serious and pressing threat”. Seoul : A US appeals court on Thursday halted a lawsuit accusing President Donald Trump of violating anti-corruption provisions in the US Constitution, saying it would review crucial preliminary rulings that allowed the case to proceed. The Richmond, Virginia-based 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals said it would review a set of lower court rulings that allowed Democratic attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia to move forward with the case. The appeals court said it would hear oral arguments in the case in March and froze legal discovery in the case, evidence-

gathering that could force disclosure of Trump’s financial records. US Department of Justice lawyers representing Trump had urged the appeals court to step in, rather than wait until a final judgment in the case was issued. “The complaint rests on a host of novel and fundamentally flawed constitutional premises, and litigating the claims would entail intrusive discovery into the President’s personal financial affairs and the official actions of his Administration,” the Justice Department said in a court filing.

A new Russian first lady? Vladimir Putin hints he may marry again

Moscow : Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday he’d probably have to get married again, but did not say to whom. Putin, 66, who jealously protects his privacy and that of his close family, was replying to a question posed by a reporter at his annual press conference, which focused mainly on international relations and the state of the

economy. “As a respectable person, I will have to do this at some point,” Putin said, smiling. Putin was married to Lyudmila Putina from 1983 until their divorce, announced in 2013. Their daughters, Katerina and Maria, both in their early 30s, are not involved in politics and have stayed firmly out of the limelight. Since he divorced his wife Lyudmila, rumours

have swirled around Putin’s personal life. One Russian newspaper report said he was in a relationship with Alina Kabaeva, a former Olympic gymnast, though Putin rejected the assertion. Reuters reported in 2016 that a businessman with ties to associates of Putin had transferred ownership of properties to Alina Kabaeva’s sister and grandmother.
