New Delhi : Hitting out at Congress and human rights groups, Union Minister Arun Jaitley said on Friday that dealing with terrorists who refuse to surrender is not “muscular policy” but a law and order issue which cannot wait for political solution. Following the imposition of the Governor’s rule in Jammu & Kashmir, Congress leaders have expressed fears that it might result in return of the ‘muscular policy’ to deal with the Kashmir problem. “At times we get caught in the idioms that we create. One such phrase is ‘muscular policy in Kashmir’. To deal with a killer is also a law and order issue. It can’t wait a political solution. A fidayeen is willing to die. He is also willing to kill.

Sushma Swaraj: Developing nations need adequate finances, technologies to combat climate change

Sushma: Developing nations need adequate finances, technologies to combat climate change Brussels : External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj warned Friday that all the effort put in by countries to tackle climate change would face a setback if developing nations did not get adequate finances and technologies to translate their political commitments into tangible initiatives. Swaraj during her address at the ‘EU High Level Event on Climate Change’ in Brussels said, climate change posed significant development challenges, especially for developing countries. “It can pose a threat to the food and water availability in developing countries, on their nutritional needs, livelihoods, health and well being, and energy security. The response to

these challenges must therefore be in terms of solutions that factor in developmental requirements,” she said. She added that the capacity of developing countries to translate their political commitments into tangible initiatives and projects gets

constrained by lack of predictable, sustained and adequate finances and technologies. “The scale of resources required for the ambitious and effective achievement of the Paris Agreement or the 2030 Agenda is enormous.

Asserting that all necessary security arrangements have been made for the yatra this year, the IGP asked the pilgrims to visit the shrine without any fear.

After HC ban on river rafting, uncertainty looms over Uttarakhand rafting industry Dehradun : A day after the Uttarakhand High Court banned paragliding, river rafting and other water sports across the state, confusion prevailed among rafting operators, especially in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand’s rafting hub, over the consequences the order could have on the lives of almost 8,000 people in the rafting business who could directly be impacted by the ban. While the High Court gave the ordered Monday, the written order to the effect was

A Division Bench of Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Lok Pal Singh was hearing a 2014 PIL filed by a Rishikesh resident, Hari Om Kashyap, where he had contended that private operators in the rafting business in the river Ganga were flouting norms. “We recommend the State Government to make suitable legislation for regulating white water river rafting, paragliding and other water sports throughout the State of Uttarakhand.

Maverick Congress men disgrace party

Congress leaders have developed an uncanny knack of getting into trouble by making irresponsible statements, particularly when it comes to Pak, then trying to wriggle out, mostly without success. The ‘expertise’ runs through almost every level of the party leadership. It was not long ago Rahul Gandhi did the unthinkable by comparing Indian judiciary to Pakistan’s, only to be snubbed by a court decision that went in his party’s favour the next day, causing great embarrassment to the Congress president and his party. A senior leader of his party, who once served as minister in the Union Cabinet, duly sworn in to protect the Indian Constitution, has now endorsed the views of former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf that the ‘first choice’ of Kashmiris would be independence. “Musharraf had explained that if Kashmiris were given a chance to exercise their free will, they would prefer to be independent. In fact, this assessment of Musharraf seems to be correct even today,” Soz wrote in a soon to be released book of his called ‘Kashmir: Glimpses of History and the Story of Struggle’. The veteran Congress leader did not have the sense to consider that, having known Musharraf and his past, he would not have said anything that could be in India’s favour. The outburst sent Congress on a frantic fire fighting operation, trying to distance the party from the views expressed by Soz, who stands discredited by being excluded from ‘every rightful citizen of India’ by his own party. Chief Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala went to the extent of describing the views as a gimmick to sell his book. It did not help the Congress cause that a couple of days ago key Rahul Gandhi loyalist Ghulam Nabi Azad had committed another indiscretion by making a statement that the BJP interpreted as giving joy to those who supported terrorism. Azad pooh-poohed the anti-terror operations in J&K, saying these resulted in the death of more civilians than terrorists. It is within the right of Congress as the main Opposition to try and discredit the government wherever possible. But this has to be done within the limits of probity and propriety. Under no circumstances can the party afford to be seen joining hands with forces inimical to India. We have had maverick Congress leaders like Mani Shankar Aiyer in constant touch with Pak think-tanks deliberating on how best to dislodge the Modi government. The controversy over a so-called secret meeting between Rahul Gandhi and other leaders with Pak high commissioner at Aiyer’s residence has not blown over yet. It will do the Congress president a world of good if saner elements in the party show the initiative to ensure that the campaigns of the Rahul brigade do not degenerate into the level of immature campus politics.

The song is a recreation of an iconic hit song starring Sushmita Sen and Sanjay Kapoor with an Arabic theme. Choreographed primarily by Adil Shaikh, it features John

Abraham and Nora – the latter performing a breath-taking belly dance. “While shooting the song, the entire team was impressed by Nora’s dancing abilities. Another source adds that Nora is one of those artists who can perform without instruction or choreography.

When Anil Kapoor thought IIFA was ‘totally rigged’

Hollywood - Bollywood Shruti Haasan turns producer after director visits home

Shruti Haasan moves away from the camera to create some behindthe-scenes magic as a producer for The Mosquito Philosophy.

Mumbai: Bollywood star Anil Kapoor has revealed that there was a time when he thought the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) was “totally rigged.” While speaking to the media ahead of IIFA Rocks, he said, “The first IIFA was in London. I was nominated for two films and of course, I said no, I cannot come. I thought these awards are totally rigged and I’m not going to come. (I thought) If I don’t go obviously they are not going to give me the award.” “So the opposite happened, I wasn’t there I missed it and I (still) won two awards,” added the 61-year-old star. Appreciating the IIFA’s honesty and integrity, he said that in the 19-year-long association with this event, he only saw the Indian film industry being promoted far and beyond. “IIFA stands for honesty, integrity, celebration, and (I know) what IIFA has done to the Indian film industry. There are a lot of filmmakers, lot of directors; lot of actors who have contributed to spreading the Indian film industry, the Bollywood film industry, the south Indian film industry all over the world, it is priceless. It’s still doing it,” he said. This is the second time the IIFA is being hosted in Bangkok after 10 years. Talking about the same, he said, “I am honoured; I wish IIFA another 19 years of success.

New Delhi : Shruti Haasan has made a name for herself without taking her illustrious father’s help. Now, the multi-talented actress has started her own production house — Isidro Media — and is committed to making interesting, edgy and quality content. As a first step, Shruti is set to produce and present The Mosquito Philosophy, which is the latest work of director Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan of Lens fame. His film Lens had dealt with the subject of voyeurism and created a tremendous buzz. Talking about the film, Jayaprakash says,

“Though it is in Tamil, the film’s story has universal appeal with a very real scenario at its core. True to the Danish ‘Dogme 95 genre’, the film is shot with a basic storyline, has no scripted dialogues and bare minimum equipment and crew to ensure the most real showcase of life is replicated on screen. The Mosquito Philosophy, born out of the quest to showcase a reallife and real-time narrative, is an interrogation of a society caught between the throes of tradition and modernity, seen through the story of four friends. The film is defined

by the idea of minimalism, basic filmmaking and storytelling techniques.” So, how did he land up with Isidro Media? “It’s almost surreal when I think of how this happened. One minute I was talking to Sarikaji about life in general and this film and the next thing I know, Isidro Media comes on board to present my film. I’m so happy to have partnered with a team that believes in my talent and my vision.” Shruti is equally excited. She said, “Isidro wants to present quality content across various formats as long as they further the creative process. We want to make it possible for people to experience world class storytelling. When we saw Mosquito Philosophy after having seen JP’s earlier work, we knew we had found the right person to associate with. He has a very edgy vision to creatively showcase even the simplest of stories. It’s fantastic to work with someone who is courageous in offering new content that challenges conventional thinking. We hope this is the start of a long-term working relationship.”

The 63-year-old diva is slated to perform at the IIFA Awards being held in Thailand, and an encore of her last performance is

After Race 3, Saqib Saleem to star in Salman Khan’s Dabangg 3?

Mumbai: Superstar Salman Khan is regarded as a messiah by many struggling actors whose careers he has kept going by ensuring they get roles. With his latest film, Race 3, he has not only revived Bobby Deol’s career but also offered a significant amount of screen space to actors Daisy Shah and Saqib Saleem. Now, we hear that the actor plans to collaborate with Saqib once again in Dabangg 3. “Salman is keen to get Saqib on board to play the main negative character in Dabangg 3. Casting for the film is underway, and it’s too early to confirm anything yet,” a source reveals. Khan, who’s played cop Chulbul Pandey in the first two Dabangg films, will reprise the role in part three as well.

expected. “Rekha ji wanted to make sure that her outfits were in order. This is the first time Manish Malhotra is designing an outfit for her to perform in. Rekha ji will be performing age-appropriate dances, and she wants the clothes to complement the performance,” a source reveals. The Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas relationship seems to be picking up steam.

Priyanka bringing Nick Jonas home to meet mom?

Mumbai: The Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas relationship seems to be picking up steam. Though the two have yet to confirm if they’re dating, they’ve been spotted together at a series of international events and functions, the most recent being a get-together of

the Jonas family. Now, it’s time for Nick to meet Priyanka’s family as well. “They are in a serious relationship and would probably like to take it to the next level. Priyanka is bringing Nick to Mumbai to meet her mother and the rest of the family,” a

Arjun might not be able to make it for his IIFA performance, here’s why

Mumbai: Arjun Kapoor is ill and the actor hopes to recover in time for his performance at the International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) this weekend. The 32-year-old actor took to Twitter to share the news. “I hate being sick... It’s such a dilemma sometimes do you medicate yourself and work through the sickness or rest it out and lose out on work a your time... Anyway I guess have to rest it out and recover in time for @IIFA & nail it on stage there...” Kapoor tweeted. The actor features in the line-up of performances at this year’s IIFA such as Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Kriti Sanon. The three-day awards ceremony will be hosted by Karan Johar and Riteish Deshmukh.

Race 3 eats into Incredibles 2 and Ocean’s 8 business Mumbai: Be it Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett or Rihanna, none of these Hollywood biggies can whip up enough of an anticipated frenzy at the box office to fob off competition from Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. Sallu’s Race 3 which released last Friday stands as a major hurdle to this week’s two massive Hollywood franchises, The Incredibles 2 and Ocean’s

8. While the first film is the story of an incredible family of super-heroes, also has a Hindi version with Kajol voicing Elastic Woman, the Ocean’s 8 is an all-female take on the blockbuster Ocean’s 11 which released in 2011. Both these Hollywood releases are struggling to find ample theatres and screens this Friday. “Although the footfall for Race 3 post its release

has been low, audiences are still flocking to see their ‘bhai’ (Salman) even after Eid. Ocean’s 8 and The Incredibles are big brand names in Hollywood. But they can’t stand up to the force of Salman Khan’s stardom. Only Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju on June 29 can stop Race 3 from occupying the top spot,” said a spokesperson of a leading multiplex chain.

Amitabh Chaudhary’s unauthorised Bhutan trip: COA issues showcause notice

Mumbai: A trip to Bhutan to survey “soil and cricketing equipment” has landed BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary in a spot of bother as the COA has show-caused him, questioning the very “need of his presence” there. Chaudhary has been asked to respond to the notice by July 4 on two specific counts. Firstly, “What was the justification for the visit to Bhutan? No prior proposal/ justification is seen in the records. No invitation/record could be provided

by the office, excepting the rather abrupt e-mail attached on how the proposal originated. Secondly, “Why was the approval of the Committee of Administrators not taken prior to your visit to Bhutan along with your Executive Assistant when you have done so in the past?” The COA has also questioned Chaudhary’s frequent foreign trips and domestic travel, which is significantly more than BCCI treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhry and acting president CK Khanna.

Brendon McCullum opens up on failed drug test in IPL 2016 Mumbai: Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has finally revealed the reason behind a failed drug test during Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016. McCullum, who was representing the Gujarat Lions in the ninth edition of the IPL, took a higher dose of medication for his asthma due to the excessive pollution levels in New Delhi. This resulted in an excess of salbutamol (than the permissible limit)- a drug that is part of inhalers used to treat asthma, in McCullum’s urine sample. Speaking to stuff.co.nz McCullum said, “There was a bit of a process to go through to make sure they had all the information and ticked off the areas they wanted to see, but we went through

it all and [the BCCI] were actually pretty good to work with in the end.I certainly don’t see it as a failed drug test. It was just a case of we just need to seek clarification and apply for this.” “I have no ill-feeling about [the process] and I also have no guilt or remorse about it because I needed a puff of my inhaler at that time,” he added. Revealing the reason behind coming out now and shedding light on the incident, the Kiwi superstar said, “I’ve heard this sort of rumbling around in the background for a while and I actually said to my wife, ‘I don’t know why we don’t just deal with this now, I’ve got nothing to hide and it is better off just talking about stuff rather than having other people talking about it’.

Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh, coach, manager admit to breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Mumbai: Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal, coach Chandika Hathurusingha and manager Asanka Gurusinha on Friday admitted to the breaching of ICC Code of Conduct charge that is related to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”. After accepting the charge, the trio can be suspended for two to four Test matches or four to eight limited over games, as per the ICC guidelines. Sri lanka had refused to take the field earlier during the test against West Indies in St. Lucia after the referees decided to change the ball before the start of play. The Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal was reportedly

spotted trying to alter the condition of the ball, which led the umpires to make the decision. The ICC in a statement said, “This action (delaying the game) was alleged to amount to a serious breach of the Laws of Cricket and to be contrary to the spirit of the game.” The ICC, in accordance with Article 5.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, has appointed The Hon Michael Beloff QC as the Judicial Commissioner to hear the case to determine the appropriate sanction. Beloff has been appointed as the Judicial Commissioner to hear Chandimal’s against the match refree’s decision for changing the condition of the ball.

The five-match Test series will also provide a rare opportunity for Kohli and his men to eke out a rare series win and assert their supremacy

Ahead of their departure, Kohli asserted that long break after IPL and the decision to forgo his county stint has actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise and helped him rejuvenate for the two-monthlong tour. Sources said the duty hike by India would have equivalent tariff implications for the United States.

India hikes import duty on US goods New Delhi: India has hit back at US President Donald Trump’s protectionist policies, hiking customs duty on 29 products, including farm products, steel and iron, which are imported from America. This retaliatory action is in response to the US move to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum products earlier this year, which had an tariff impact of $241 million on India. Sources said the duty hike by India would have equivalent tariff implications for the United States. India has said the duty imposed by the US had affected steel exports by $198.6 million and aluminum shipments by $42.4 million. India’s decision to hike duties comes a day after the European Union said it would charge higher import duties on a range of US products. Earlier, China too had raised

duties on products imported from the US. These moves by various countries threaten to unleash a global trade war, that could hit world economic growth. Interestingly, as per the list India submitted to the WTO,

fine now and absolutely ready to go. My neck is fine now. I’ve had good practice & played 6-7 sessions in Mumbai. Breaks like these make you fresh mentally. It has made me excited to go back on to the pitch again.” “In hindsight, not playing county cricket was the best thing to happen at that moment although I wanted to experience the conditions. England is a place where we haven’t played so much, there is a big gap of four years.

it had proposed to hike customs duty on specified motorcycles, that primarily include Harley Davidsons. However, in government notification there is no mention of duty hike on motor cycle with

engine capacity of over 800cc. In February, India had slashed customs on imported high-end motorcycles like Harley Davidson to 50 per cent but the move had failed to please Mr Trump, who wanted it to be slashed to zero. According to the government notification, duty hike would come into effect immediately for 28 products, while for artemia, a kind of shrimp, the rate hike would be effective from August 4. It said that the import duty on chickpeas, Bengal gram and masur dal has been increased to 70 per cent from 30 per cent, while that on lentils has been hiked to 40 per cent from 30 per cent. Shelled almonds imported from the US will now attract import duty at `120/kg as against `100/kg earlier.

Germany has taken in hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and Merkel is under pressure at home over migration policy, an issue which is threatening to undermine her ruling coalition.
