Short News India’s richest 1 pc cornered 73 pc of wealth generated last year: Survey Davos/New Delhi: The richest 1 per cent in India cornered 73 per cent of the wealth generated in the country last year, a new survey showed on Monday, presenting a worrying picture of rising income inequality.Besides, 67 crore Indians comprising the population’s poorest half saw their wealth rise by just 1 per cent, as per the survey released by the international rights group Oxfam hours before the start of the annual congregation of the rich and powerful from across the world in this resort town. The situation appears even more grim globally, where 82 per cent of the wealth generated last year worldwide went to the 1 per cent, while 3.7 billion people that account for the poorest half of population saw no increase in their wealth. The annual Oxfam survey is keenly watched and is discussed in detail at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting where rising income and gender inequality is among the key talking points for the world leaders. Last year’s survey had showed that India’s richest 1 per cent held a huge 58 per cent of the country’s total wealth -- higher than the global figure of about 50 per cent. This year’s survey also showed that the wealth of India’s richest 1 per cent increased by over Rs 20.9 lakh crore during 2017 -- an amount equivalent to total budget of the central government in 2017-18, Oxfam India said.

Modi has an ego of his prime ministership: Anna Hazare

Mumbai: Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has an “ego of his Prime Ministership”, adding that it was the reason why Modi was not responding to his letters.Hazare was speaking at a public rally in Atpadi tehsil in Sangli district on Saturday.Hazare said, “I have written more than 30 letters to PM Modi in the last three years but he never replied to them. Modi has an ego of his Prime Ministership, hence he did not respond to my letters.”Hazare had, earlier, announced that he was going to stage another round of agitations in New Delhi from March 23. The rally at Atpadi on Saturday was the first of the three rallies Hazare will be addressing in an effort to mobilise support for the March 23 agitation. “It will be a never-seen-before kind of massive agitation that will be a warning to the government,” he said. “I have no intention of garnering votes through my rallies and agitations. The way there was a huge rally for Jan Lokpal, I believe there will be a similar agitation on farmers’ issues,” he said. Hazare said that his demands included implementation of the Lokpal, appointment of a Lokayukta, a pension of Rs 5,000 to farmers and higher rates for farm produce.

However, according to a report in The Times of India, Vatal Nagaraj faced the angst of Mahadayi and Kannada activists for not taking them into confidence when he gave a call for a Karnataka bandh on January 25. Vatal, who wished to express his solidarity with the farmers of North Karnataka, was in Hubballi to brief the media about the proposed bandh to mark their protest against the delay in solving the Mahadayi crisis.

Among the emerging economies China’s rank is 26, while Pakistan stands at 47

India ranks 62, below Pak, China in inclusive development index of Despite its low overall score, India is among the ten emerging economies with ‘advancing’ trend. Only two advanced economies have shown ‘advancing’ trend.

gns, Davos/New Delhi: India was on Monday ranked at the 62nd place among emerging economies on an Inclusive Development Index, much below China’s 26th position and Pakistan’s 47th.Norway remains the world’s most inclusive advanced economy, while Lithuania again tops the list of emerging economies, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said while releasing the yearly index

at Davos before the start of its annual meeting, to be attended by several world leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. The index takes into account the “living standards, environmental sustainability and protection of future generations from further indebtedness”, the WEF said. It urged the leaders to urgently move to a new model of inclusive growth and development, saying

reliance on GDP as a measure of economic achievement is fuelling short-termism and inequality. India was ranked 60th among 79 developing economies last year, as against China’s 15th and Pakistan’s 52nd position. The 2018 index, which measures progress of 103 economies on three individual pillars -- growth and development; inclusion; and inter-generational equity -- has been divided into two parts.

Reading the tea leaves as fiscal 2019 looms

bollywood special

Esha Gupta’s latest pics will make you wonder about her ‘changed look’

The four years since 2014 have been chocka-bloc full of fiscal and financial reforms. India needs a rest from such frenetic reforms. It’s time to take a deep breath, consolidate and pull all the loose strings together. One hopes that fiscal 2019 is devoid of breaking news, dull as ditchwater but fulsome in terms of outcomes. The most successful reform of the Narendra Modi government has been the restoration of fiscal stability. The Union government’s fiscal deficit is down to the targeted 3.2 per cent of GDP in fiscal 2018, from a high of 6.5 per cent in fiscal 2010, post the 2008 financial crisis. The revenue deficit has similarly trended down to 1.9 per cent of GDP. Consumer price inflation has been tamed at sub four per cent. This achievement burnishes the credibility of the government’s fiscal management. Significantly, fiscal discipline was enforced despite a reduction in the net tax resources. The 14th Finance Commission had enlarged the share of state governments from fiscal 2015, in the divisible pool of Central taxes, to 42 per cent from 32 per cent. State government expenditures have consequently increased rapidly.State governments now collectively spend 87 per cent more than the Union government (Mishra and Singh, NCAER 2017) compared to just six per cent more in 2011. Some of the increase was due the UDAY scheme for restructuring electricity utility by state governments absorbing their debt of around Rs 1.4 trillion, in 2016 and 2017. The collective state government fiscal deficit ballooned from less than two per cent in 2012 to nearly 3.5 per cent of GDP in 2016. Tax receipts have been a traditional fiscal Achilles heel. Union government tax receipts are near stagnant at around 10 to 11 per cent of GDP. State governments additionally collect six to seven per cent of GDP as taxes. But there is a silver lining now. The Goods and Services Tax is likely to disrupt this placid tax regime, because it introduces positive incentives for paying taxes via the tax credit provisions. Honing the multiple GST rates to the specificities of India’s political economy will remain an ongoing exercise. Once the tax revenue stabilises, the government could consider reducing the multiple tax rates, thereby harnessing the efficiency gains of simplification.Direct tax collection over the first three quarters of 2017 grew at 18.2 per cent over the previous year, versus a target of 15.7 per cent, courtesy the clampdown on cash transactions. India’s direct tax rates are not extortionary. There is little scope to provide tax breaks. In fact, existing tax breaks could be ended, like those for capital gains on equity held for just one year. The stock markets are defying gravity. So, this is a good time to tax capital gains.

Salman Khan to work with Benjamin Button’s VFX team for Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bharat Mumbai: Salman Khan is one actor in the film industry who hates prosthetics - and with good reason. His neurological condition (he had undergone surgery for trigeminal neuralgia in 2011 and was cautioned against performing dangerous stunts and using make-up because his skin needs to breathe) makes it hard for him to breathe if he has a beard wig or other facial props slapped on. This is why we never see Salman in disguise. However, very soon, the actor’s equation with prosthetics is about to change. In his next film Bharat, which is to be directed by Ali Abbas Zafar (of ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ and ‘Sultan’ fame), Salman’s character goes through many physiological changes that will be shown on the screen. The film will have Salman ageing from approximately 17 to 65.To get the best result and look, the makers are already in talks with the VFX team of ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’. It is the same team that even worked with Shah Rukh Khan for his film ‘Fan’. The makers, who were looking to avoid any harm to Salman, started looking for options including the hiring of a younger actor. But this idea was tossed in the bin. A source says, “The Bharat team considered the prospect of getting a Salman look-alike to play the younger version. But Salman quickly discarded that line of thought and agreed to take on the entire role from age 17 to 65.” Apparently, Salman will go through a series of look tests to decide his final appearance at various stages of his character’s life. “All the prosthetics may aggravate his neurological condition. But it’s a risk Salman will take for the sake of authenticity,” says a source close to the project. The film is slated to release on Eid 2019.

NPAs to rise to Rs 9.5 lakh crore by March-end: report gns, New Delhi: India’s banking sector will be saddled with gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) worth a staggering Rs 9.5 lakh crore by March-end, up from Rs 8 lakh crore in the year-ago period, a report said on Monday. The high level of stressed assets in the banking system however provide enormous opportunity for asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) which are important stakeholders in the NPA resolution process, said the Assocham-Crisil study. At the same time, it said, the growth of ARCs is expected to come down significantly

owing to capital constraints. “While growth (of ARCs) is expected to fall to around 12 per cent by June 2019, the AUM (assets under management) are expected to reach Rs 1 lakh crore, and that is fairly sizable,” said the report. It said the GNPAs will increase to “Rs 9.5 lakh crore as on March 31, 2018 i.e. about 10.5 per cent of total advances, while stressed assets are expected to be at Rs 11.5 lakh crore”. Separately, Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla had said in Parliament earlier that

GNPAs of banks crossed Rs 8.5 lakh crore at the end of September 2017. The report further said that with banks expected to make higher provisioning over and above the provisions made for stressed assets, they may sell the assets at lower discounts, thus increasing the capital requirement. gns, AHMEDABAD/RAJKOT/SURAT/ VADODARA: Thousands of passengers found themselves at different bus depots in the state, mostly in north Gujarat, after Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) suspended services fearing attacks on buses by Karni Sena members. GSRTC officials said that 800 buses to various places in north Gujarat (Mehsana, Patan, Palanpur and Himmatnagar) were cancelled. Passengers at Ahmedabad and Ranip bus depots were also stranded after the GSRTC stopped service to north Gujarat. Buses for Banaskantha, Mehsana, Vadgam, Kheralu, Danta and Ambaji were cancelled due to road blockades. There were reports of protesters burning tyres and even torching buses. Karni Sena members

also resorted to violence in Surat city. Police inspector of Kapodra police station, V K Patel, was manhandled by some protesters. In another incident, a woman police sub-inspector was harassed.

AHMEDABAD: While the state administration has issued directions that offences be registered against those who resort to violence while protesting against the release of “Padmaavat”, Ahmedabad Police has gone a step farther. The city police has threatened to impose Section 308 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) — attempt to commit culpable homicide — for violent protests inside malls, multiplexes, and other enclosed spaces. In a strong letter to his subordinates, city police commissioner A K Singh said, “Multiplexes are dark and congested spaces vulnerable to stampedes. 72% of Ahmedabad vehicles Couple booked for falsely reporting are two-wheelers loss of passports

AHMEDABAD: In early1999, there were more cars in Ahmedabad than two wheelers, but from mid-2000 the city saw an increase in number of two wheelers and in 2017 two-wheelers have come to constitute 72% of vehicles registered in a year.According to the transport department, of the 2.90 lakh vehicles registered in Ahmedabad 2.09 lakh were two wheelers while 57,661 were cars. In 1999 the number of two-wheelers that were registered were only 1,663 and the number of cars was 3,094.Experts feel that the city public transport has failed abysmally. The city’s Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), which was designed to ease congestion on the roads by diverting private commuters to public

transport has failed to achieve its goal. The 89km BRTS coverage has in fact cut citizens’ usage of city public transport by nearly 18%.Officials said that before the launch of BRTS, passenger traffic was over 8 lakh commuters per day. Today, passenger traffic of BRT and AMTS combined is less. If the AMC is to be believed they themselves have admitted that AMTS and BRTS together are used by

8 lakh commuters.“Instead of increasing passenger number has remained stagnant even after eight years of BRTS operation. Actually, there has been a fall in the number,” said a senior AMC officer. The increase in private vehicles came because BRTs, despite having AC buses, has failed to attract passengers. I need 12 lakh or else I’ll lose my daughter.

The case was sent to special branch of the city police and a report was also sent to regional passport office.“During investigation, it was revealed that the couple was caught from IGI airport in New Delhi in 2004 when they were attempting illegal immigration.

US govt shutdown international enters its third day UK arrests woman who married, gave birth under IS as Senate failed to regime on returning home reach agreement gns, London: A British woman who married and gave birth under the Islamic State regime in Syria has become one of the first so-called jihadi brides to be arrested on her return to the UK, a media report has claimed. The 27-yearold, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested at Heathrow Airport under terrorism laws when she landed from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, earlier this month, ‘The Sunday Times’ reported. Her two-year-old son, whose nationality remains unclear, has been taken into the care of the state. Scotland Yard has released the woman on bail while it continues its investigation. The UK authorities are working on a series of measures to tackle cases of such ISIS brides and children returning to the UK following the terrorist group’s defeats in its yrian and Iraqi strongholds last year, the report said. Aqsa Mahmood, a 22-year-old Pakistaniorigin suspected ISIS recruiter from Glasgow, has been stripped of her British citizenship to prevent her returning to Britain. The UK Home Office argues that Mahmood has not been made “stateless” because she is eligible to apply for citizenship in the country where her parents were born, which is Pakistan. A similar order has been made against another British woman who fled Syria at the end of 2016 after her husband, a prominent British figure in ISIS, died in a battle.

gns, Washington: A US government shutdown entered its third day on Monday as Senate negotiators failed to reach agreement late on Sunday to restore federal spending authority and deal with demands from Democrats that young “Dreamers” be protected from deportation. The Senate set a vote for 12 pm (1700 GMT) on Monday on advancing a measure to provide temporary government funding through February 8, end the shutdown and allow hundreds of thousands of federal employees to return to work. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell offered an olive branch to Democrats late on Sunday, pledging on the Senate floor to bring immigration legislation up for debate in February if the issue is still unresolved by then. At the core of Democrats’ demands is the fate of young people, known as Dreamers, who were brought to the country illegally as children. Former Democratic President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program extended legal protections to about 700,000 of them, shielding them from being deported. “It would be my intention to proceed to legislation that would address DACA, border security and related issues,” McConnell said, adding: “It is also my intention take up legislation on increased defense spending, disaster relief and other important matters” then.

such places may cause chaos and damage to property and life. Thus, cops should register an offence under Section 308 of the IPC.”K L N Rao, the special commissioner of police, Sector I, said: “All malls and multiplexes have been provided moving and static police bandobast from Sunday, which includes armed State Reserve Police personnel.”In-charge DGP, Pramod Kumar, also stressed that stern action would be taken against violent protesters. “Some 20 cases related to those protesting against the release of “Padmaavat” have been registered in Gujarat and over 100 persons have been arrested.”

Dinosaur egg found in Gujarat’s Balasinor? Once home to dinosaurs, Balasinor, a city located in Mahisagar district of Gujarat, is a real-life Jurassic Park. This has been asserted by the fact that local farmers have recently found a possible egg of Rajasaurus Narmadensis, a dinosaur species, in Muwada village which is about 10km away from Balasinor. The egg found on Saturday evening during a digging exercise is broken, though. The egg was handed over to the local ‘Mamlatdar’ office and forest department. The egg now will be sent to the Geological Survey of India (GSI) for further research. It will require a laboratory test to confirm whether this is a dinosaur egg or not. Dinosaur fossils were first found in 1980s near Balasinor following which Dinosaur Fossil Park was developed here. Since then constant

research on one of the most giant and now extinct species has been carried out in Balasinor. Researchers believe that six crore years back, the belt

of Narmada Valley from Balasinor to Madhya Pradesh was the most preferred location for laying eggs for the last seven surviving species of dinosaurs. The Rajasaurus Narmadensis, a carnivorous species, had a height of 2.4 m, length of 7 to 9 m. It lived on the planet 72.1 million years ago. Its fossilized bones were discovered by Suresh Srivastava of the Geological Survey of India between 1982-84.

Earlier, Ecuador announced it had granted citizenship to Assange, in an unsuccessful attempt to provide him with diplomatic immunity.

Ecuador prez terms Julian Assange as ‘inherited problem’, ‘nuisance’ for govt

gns, Quito (Ecuador): The president of Ecuador Lenin Moreno on Sunday described WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as an “inherited problem” that has created “more than a nuisance” for his government.“We hope to have a positive result” on the issue, he said in an interview with television networks.Earlier this month, Ecuador announced that it had granted citizenship to Assange, in an unsuccessful attempt to provide him with diplomatic immunity and usher him out of its London embassy without the threat of arrest by Britain.Moreno said his country was continuing to seek mediation involving “important people,” without specifying whom he meant.Assange fled to the embassy in 2012 to avoid being extradited to Sweden for alleged sex crimes, which he denies, and has remained in the building ever since.Sweden later shelved its investigation, but Assange faces

arrest by British authorities for fleeing justice in the Swedish case. He fears British authorities will then allow his extradition to the United States where he is wanted for publication by WikiLeaks of classified information in 2010. The WikiLeaks founder has strained the patience of his hosts since taking up the offer of asylum made by then-president Rafael Correa in 2012. He was publicly

reprimanded for interfering in the 2016 US election after publishing hacked emails from the campaign team of Democrat Hillary Clinton. More recently, he drew the ire of Correa’s successor, President Moreno, when he used Twitter to pump out messages of support for Catalonia’s independence drive. Moreno was forced to respond to complaints from the Spanish government.
