Short News Flight delayed by 3 hrs, Vistara passenger insisted on smoking on board; offloaded

New Delhi: A Vistara airlines flight was delayed by three hours after a passenger engaged in an argument with on-board crew as he wished to smoke on the plane. The UK-707 flight from Amritsar to Kolkata flight was scheduled to have a halt in Delhi, which is where the incident was reported prior to take off. The said passenger asked the flight attendant to permit him to smoke, citing that the flight is long. On being denied, the passenger engaged in an argument, following which he was issued a warning letter by the pilot and was later offloaded at Delhi airport, as per the airline spokesperson. In a statement about the incident, the airline regretted the delay and asserted that they do not accept unruly behaviour of any kind.

Sajjan Kumar moves SC against conviction in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case

New Delhi: Former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar Saturday moved the Supreme Court challenging the life imprisonment awarded to him by the Delhi High Court in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. Senior advocate H S Phoolka, who is representing the victims of the riots cases, said he has been conveyed by the the apex court registry that Kumar has filed an appeal against the high court’s judgement. He said the victims had already filed a caveat to pre-empt any ex parte hearing in favour of Kumar. Kumar was convicted and sentenced to life for the remainder of his life by the high court on December 17 in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Raj Nagar area. The case relates to killing of five Sikhs in Raj Nagar part-I area in Palam Colony in South West Delhi on November 1-2, 1984, and burning down a Gurudwara in Raj Nagar part II during that period.

In a tweet, Manoj Tiwari said he was true to his promise and challenged AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal to call an all-party meeting on his “failure” to control pollution in Delhi, saying he will donate same amount again. With approval of Delhi Metro phase IV by the AAP government, the party tweeted from its official handle “Hope Manoj Tiwari will not term it as a Jumla and fulfil his promise of donation (to the party).”

The new tax rates will come into effect from January 1, 2019.

GST Council cuts rates on 23 items; movie tickets, TVs to become cheaper

New Delhi: In a Christmas bonanza to the common man, the GST Council Saturday reduced tax rates on 23 goods and services, including movie tickets, TV and monitor screens and power banks, and exempted frozen and preserved vegetables from the levy. The reduced rates are likely to come into effect from January 1, 2019, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters after the 31st meeting of

Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council here. Of the 23 goods and services on which rates have been slashed, tax rate on seven items in the 28 per cent slab has been brought down. With this, only 28 goods are left in the highest 28 per cent tax bracket. The goods on which GST has been lowered to 18 per cent from 28 per cent at present include pulleys, transmission shafts and cranks, gear boxes, retreated or

used tyres, power banks of lithium ion batteries, digital cameras, video camera recorders and video game consoles. The 28 per cent slab is now restricted to only luxury and sin goods apart from auto-parts and cement - the tax rate on which could not be cut due to high revenue implication. “Rate rationalisation is an ongoing process. When the original rates were fixed, India had the most irrational taxation rates. Most of these items were charged, along with cascading effect, at 31 per cent. So we had only transiently put them at 28 per cent, because if we had immediately brought it down then the revenue impact would have been there and therefore the social expenditure of central and state governments would have suffered. So therefore we followed a more realistic pragmatic and a prudent policy that as the revenues move up and affordability increases we gradually bring it down.

BJP to move Supreme Court for permission to hold rath yatra in West Bengal

New Delhi: The BJP has decided to move a vacation bench of the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta high court order that stayed permission for its rath yatra in West Bengal, reported news agency ANI. On Friday, a division bench of the Calcutta high court stayed order by its single-judge bench a day before granting

conditional approval to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s rath yatra, disrupting its plans to flag off the first rally from the temple town of Tarapith in Birbhum district on Saturday. Abhishek Singhvi, Congress MP and senior advocate, argued that the single-judge bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty did not

study intelligence reports submitted in a sealed envelope before passing its order. On Friday, the division bench observed that the single-judge bench has to go through the reports to pronounce an objective order. “The division bench has not disallowed the yatra. Our legal battle will continue. So will our agitation

and programmes in different districts,” BJP state president Dilip Ghosh had said. “There is distinct apprehension of communal disharmony being triggered in Bengal over the yatra. That’s why the government is fighting it out in the courts,” said Sudip Bandyopadhyay, leader of Trinamool Congress.

Separately, MLA Alka Lamba told repoter, ‘I am not resigning.’

Neither any resignation has been sought from Pak PM Imran Khan called UN Chief, Lamba nor is anyone resigning: Sisodia raised Kashmir issue: official United Nations/New Delhi: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan telephoned UN chief Antonio Guterres and raised the issue of Kashmir, a UN spokesman has said. Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN Secretary General, did not give further details about the conversation between Khan and Guterres. When asked by PTI to comment on India’s strong retort to Khan that Pakistan should mind its own business and that Kashmir is an integral part of India, Dujarric said, “Our position on Kashmir has been reiterated. There is an observer group as mandated by the Security Council.” He was referring to the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). Dujarric added that the Pakistani

Prime Minister wanted to speak to the Secretary-General. “It’s only normal that the Secretary-General speak to Heads of Governments and Heads of State and, as I said, I can

confirm that the call took place and that the (Pakistan) Prime Minister raised the issue of Kashmir,” Dujarric said. In a set of recent tweets, Khan said that “Kashmiris must be allowed to decide their future”. He also tweeted that Pakistan would raise the issue of India’s alleged human rights violations at the United Nations.

New Delhi: Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia Saturday rejected party MLA Alka Lamba’s claim that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had “demanded” her resignation for not supporting a resolution in the assembly on revoking late PM Rajiv Gandhi’s Bharat Ratna. “Neither any resignation has been sought (from Lamba) and nor is anyone resigning,” Sisodia, the deputy chief minister of Delhi, told reporters at a press conference here. Separately, Lamba told PTI, “I am not resigning.” The Delhi Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in which it was demanded that the Bharat Ratna awarded to Gandhi be withdrawn, but the AAP swiftly distanced itself from the reference to the Congress

Naseeruddin event at Ajmer Lit Fest cancelled after protests by right wingers

Ajmer: The organisers of the Ajmer Literature Festival on Friday called off an event, set to be addressed by Naseeruddin Shah, after protests by right-wing groups over the actor’s recent remarks on mob violence. The veteran actor found himself at the centre of a major controversy over his remarks in reference to the killing of a policeman in Bulandshahr earlier this month. He said the death of a cow was being given importance over killing of a policeman.

december 23, 2018, sunday

The 68-year-old actor was supposed to deliver the keynote address of the fifth edition of the three-day literature festival in Ajmer. Before the event, many rightwing activists protested outside the venue. One of the protesters also hurled black ink on the poster of Shah. Raas Bihari Gaur, coordinator of the festival, said, “Shah was scheduled to inaugurate the festival but he did not come because of the protest by some locals over his comments.”

leader. The matter became a major crisis within the AAP with Lamba alleging on Friday that she was “put under pressure” to support the resolution, which she resisted and boycotted. She claimed she spoke to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Kejriwal who, she said, asked her to resign as MLA. “I am ready to do so,” she had said. Sisodia told reporters, “The aim of the original resolution, moved by MLA Jarnail Singh, was only to help

the victims of 1984 riots get justice. No resolution mentioning late PM Rajiv Gandhi was passed in the Assembly as being reported in the media.” He clarified that the lines about Gandhi were not part of the original resolution placed before the House. It was a handwritten amendment proposed by a member and it cannot be passed in such a manner, he added. Asked if the party will take any action against Bharti, Sisodia said it will talk to him on the matter.

Kamal Haasan to contest 2019 LS polls, may ally with ‘like-minded’ parties

Chennai: Actor Kamal Haasan, who has made a political plunge this February with the launch of his party Makkal Needhi Maiam, on Saturday announced that his party will contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “I will definitely contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha

elections. A committee would soon start choosing candidates,” Haasan said. Asked if he would go alone or ally with other political parties for the general elections, Haasan, 64 said his party is open to align with likeminded parties and the focus of the campaign

would be on the development of Tamil Nadu. Haasan further said that it would be too early to say if his party would lead the alliance. Kamal Haasan also said that he would not collaborate with any party that “tries to change Tamil Nadu’s DNA”.

The political economy of the persistent agrarian crisis

The victory of Congress party in the recent assembly elections of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan has brought the agrarian crisis in rural areas to the centre of political debate. While there are several factors in election victories, the severity of the agrarian unrest was surely a major factor. While there is consensus that the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been indifferent to the agrarian crisis and in some ways even contributed to it, there are no easy solutions to the crisis. Even the victorious Congress party has also gone back to the same old formula of loan waivers and the promise to raise the minimum support price (MSP) of crops to win back the trust of the farming community. Both prescriptions are old and have been tried by every party, including the BJP in the state elections of Uttar Pradesh and elsewhere. But can loan waivers and MSP increases reduce the severity of the agrarian crisis let alone provide a long-term solution? The answer is a clear no. Not only are these inadequate and do not address the real issues but also create disincentives which are detrimental to the long run prospects of agrarian revival. Apart from being iniquitous benefiting only the institutional borrowers and surplus farmers, both of these are large drains on the financial resources of both states and the centre with the negative fallout of a decline in investment in agriculture. This has been the case at the central level with agricultural investments declining in real terms during the tenure of this government and also in most states that implemented loan waivers. But they also detract attention from the core issues that plague Indian agriculture. The debt trap is only a symptom of a larger crisis of declining farm incomes driven by a large decline in crop output prices even though input prices have risen. This has happened in food crops but also in nonfood crops. The movement of terms of trade against agriculture in the last four years has only worsened in recent years. So much so that the aggregate food inflation from the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) is negative for the last five months. It is important to note that the WPI data underestimates the severity of price decline since what matters to farmers are farm harvest prices that are even lower than wholesale prices. The real question is why agricultural prices are declining when there is no such trend visible in international markets. Arguments suggesting that price decline is due to surplus production are not just simplistic but are also naïve in a country where starvation deaths and malnutrition continue to make headlines.

Bajirao Mastani finds a new fan in Elon Musk

Zero box office collection Day 1:

Shah Rukh Khan film earns Rs 20.14 crore

New Delhi : Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2015 hit Bajirao Mastani starring Bollywood’s much-loved couple, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh has a new fan in Elon Musk. The billionaire tech entrepreneur has recently tweeted about the magnum opus. His tweet has got many likes and retweets and streaming platform Eros Now has replied on the tweet informing him about the movie being available on their platform for digital viewing. On Friday,

Musk shared the link of Bajirao Mastani song “Deewani Mastani” and also a GIF of Ranveer’s hit number “Malhari” on his official Twitter handle. He wrote, “Bajirao Mastani”. Musk did not give any context for his tweet and left many puzzled. The song “Deewani Mastani” picturised on Deepika won a national award for choreography. Choreographer Remo D’Souza won his career’s first National Award for this song.

New Delhi : This week’s solo Bollywood release Zero has opened at the box office with a total collection of Rs 20.14 crore on day 1. The romantic drama, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif, opened to mixed reviews. While for SRK fans, the actor’s charm was the highlight of the Aanand L Rai directorial, for others, the film was a tedious watch. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the first day box office collection. He tweeted, “#Zero has underperformed on Day 1, despite extensive release [4380 screens]

Mumbai : Actor Sunny Deol says people in Bollywood don’t make comedy films like Bhaiaji Superhit anymore. “The decision to take up the movie was based on my instinct. I have acted in comedy movies previously, but this was quite an experience. I truly feel that the role I play in Bhaiaji Superhit is almost on the lines of the roles I used to play in the 1990s – where men are vendetta-driven and love to stomp feet, flex biceps, uproot water pumps and roar like lions,” Sunny said in a statement. Set in Varanasi, Bhaiaji Superhit

She further brags smilingly, “Link ups… ho bhi nahi sakta hai. kyuki mein kissi ladke ko sharma kar ‘jee batayiye’ nahi bolungi.” [Link ups cannot happen with me, because I am not the kind of a girl who can be pretentious. Also I shall never talk to any boy in a coy manner, say demurely, never). So the next question, what would she look for in a guy. Sara says, “I have yet not prepared any list as to what qualities in a boy will appeal to me.” But one thing is, “I would still prefer a boy with a little bit of a humour.

+ #Christmas vacations… Sat and Sun biz extremely crucial… Fri 20.14 cr. India biz.” The film’s performance is better than Shah Rukh’s last release Jab Harry Met Sejal which earned Rs 15.25 crore on the day of its release. However, being a Shah Rukh Khan starrer, trade analysts predicted a good opening collection for Zero. Girish Johar, while predicting the day one box office collection of the film, said, “Being a non-holiday Friday, the film is expected to earn something between Rs 25-27 crore.

I like men with moustache, says Sara Ali Khan

New Delhi : In an industry which is notorious for real hook-ups, imaginary hook-ups and fake hook-ups to promote a film, Sara Ali Khan has been immune to any link-ups although she is one film old and her next (Simmba) is almost here. Though being single does not give many actresses a free pass from gossip. In Sara’s case, it seems to have worked. She says emphatically, “Yes! That is right I have not dated any man, therefore you have not been able to read news of my link ups at all. I am single at the moment.”

India tour of Australia: Going back Post ball-tampering ban, to roots, Steve Smith found solace Cameron Bancroft almost gave up cricket

Cameron Bancroft is set to play the Big Bash League (BBL) once his ban ends. He has already been training with Perth Scorchers. Sydney : Australian cricketer Cameron Bancroft said he is now a vastly different person compared to the one which was caught ball-tampering at Newlands, Cape Town and revealed he considered walking away from cricket to become a yoga teacher. Bancroft revealed it all in an open letter to himself. The opener received a nine-month ban from the international and domestic game for his role in the scandal in South Africa that rocked cricket, in which he used sandpaper to try to alter the condition of the ball. Then captain Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner received stricter punishment – both were suspended for a year. Bancroft’s ban

ends December end while Smith, Warner will be available for selection after March end. A day after Steve Smith broke his silence and spoke with the media since the controversial moment, Bancroft, too, reemerged into public life with a week left into the ban. He did so in the form of an open letter to his former self published in The Western Australian. In it, Bancroft describes the major influence Australia head coach Justin Langer has had on him, along with West Australian mentor Adam Voges. He said a crucial moment was Voges asking him to justify why he should be on a preseason trip to Brisbane for the Western Warriors Sheffield Shield team.

Addressing the media at the SCG, he admitted of ignoring something ghastly happening against spirit of the game right in front of his eyes. “I don’t want to know about it and I walked away. That was my chance where I could have stopped something from happening,” he says. From a leadership perspective that was a failure, a serious let-up, as grave an offence as partaking in it. “Something happened out on the field and I had the opportunity to stop it at that

point rather than say I don’t want to know anything about it, that was my failure and I’ve taken responsibility for that,” he says. For several months, he was in a “dark space”, though he says he has recovered. “I’m going okay now. Initially

De Beers shocked the diamond industry in September by selling gem-quality man-made stones for just $800 a carat.

Diamonds to get more affordable London: Since De Beers abandoned its decades-old policy of refusing to sell labgrown diamonds as jewellery, the price gap between man-made stones and natural gems has widened — and the difference is set to get even bigger. When De Beers shocked the industry with its U-turn in May, a one carat synthetic diamond cost about $4,200 while an equivalent mined gem sold for $6,000. But since September, De Beers, has been selling man-made stones for just $800 a carat. De Beers says it wants to create a clear distinction between lab-grown diamonds and natural gems. The hope is this will reinforce the mystique of stones formed in the earth’s crust so consumers keep buying

in 2nd T20I

them for major events such as engagements. By contrast, its synthetic diamonds grown in Britain at its Element Six labs and sold through jewellery subsidiary Lightbox are marketed as sparkly, pink, blue or white fashion accessories that are neither as rare nor precious as real gems. The risk for the

130-year-old De Beers, which coined the marketing tag “A Diamond is Forever” in 1947, is that its branding of lab-grown gems could und-ermine natural diamonds. But so far, De Beers’ strategy has been working. According to analyst Paul Zimnisky, the average discount of a one carat generic labgrown diamond to a natural diamond had widened to 42 per cent by mid-November from 29 per cent in January. At the same time, production costs to make high-tech diamonds in a laboratory have plummeted to as little as $300 a carat from about $4,000 over the past decade, according to consultants Bain & Company and two former De Beers’ employees.

Hyderabad: Two trades in the options market have bet that Infosys will fall as much as seven per cent by February 2019, a US-based US news agency said. According to a report in Bloomberg, two trades in Infosys have wagered a notional amount of $29 million on Infosys. They expect Infosys stock price would fall after it announces its results for the third quarter. Quoting Bloomberg’s Block Trade Monitor, the news agency said: “The first one on buying a February put option — a right to sell at an

agreed price—on Infosys at Rs 620 apiece or seven percent below the December 20 close. And the other one selling a January call option—right to buy at a predecided price — at Rs 750 or seven percent above the last close.” “While it’s not possible to identify the trader, such bets are executed to hedge against a decline and it seems that the trader(s) financed this protection by selling the higher strike calls,” the agency said. On Friday, Infosys stock fell over 3.16 per cent to end at Rs 645.75 apiece.

Geneva : UN rights experts called on British authorities on Friday to allow WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to leave the Ecuador embassy in London without fear of arrest or extradition. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention reiterated its finding published in February 2016 that Assange had been de facto unlawfully held without charge in the embassy, where he has now been holed up for more than six years. He initially took asylum to avoid being extradited to Sweden, where authorities wanted to question

him as part of a sexual assault investigation. That investigation was dropped. Assange, whose website published thousands of classified US government documents, denied the Sweden allegations, saying the charge was a ploy that would eventually take him to the United States where prosecutors are preparing to pursue a criminal case against him. Britain says Assange will be arrested for skipping bail if he leaves the embassy, but that any sentence would not exceed six months, if convicted.

Washington: The US government began a Christmastime shutdown early Saturday, after Congress adjourned without passing a federal spending bill or addressing President Donald Trump’s demand for money to build a border wall. Operations for several key agencies ceased at 12:01 am Saturday (5:01 GMT), despite last-ditch talks that continued on Capitol Hill between White House officials and congressional leaders in both parties. Trump has dug in on his demand for USD 5 billion for construction of a wall

on the US border with Mexico. Democrats are staunchly opposed, and the absence of an elusive deal means federal funds for dozens of agencies will lapse when the clock strikes twelve. It remained unclear how long the shutdown will last, but Trump expressed hope late Friday night that it “will not last long,” after earlier saying he was ready for just that. The optics are bad, as 800,000 federal employees will be either furloughed or forced to work without pay in the runup to the Christmas holiday. But the prospect of a large

portion of government workers going without paychecks was not enough to spur lawmakers or the president to action. The House of Representatives adjourned just before 7:00 pm (2300 GMT) Friday, with no moves taken to avert a shutdown, and the Senate closed up shop an hour later. Both are due back in session at noon Saturday. About three-quarters of the government, including the military and the Department of Health and Human Services, is fully funded until the end of September 2019, leaving 25 per cent unfunded as of Saturday.
