Alwar lynching: Rajasthan Police admit delay in taking victim to health centre

suggested an alternative formula for devolution based on urbanisation and social deprivation, an official statement said. Gujarat is improving its expenditure in health and education – areas which deserve fuller attention over the coming years, Singh mentioned. “Gujarat has shown the lead in achieving more balanced development among primary, secondary and tertiary sectors,” he said. Of the challenges being faced by Gujarat GST collections. “Once the 14 per cent guarantee as GST compensation by the union Government winds up, Gujarat will need to look at the GST collection projections seriously and tax buoyancy may become an issue,” the statement added. The other challenge relate to how to restructure National Disaster Relief Fund considering Gujarat is prone to various kinds of natural disasters. The 15th Finance Commission is on a three-day visit to Gujarat.

New Delhi: Admitting there was a delay in taking Alwar lynch victim Akbar to a community health centre, the Rajasthan Police on Monday said a team of officers will present a detailed report after probing the incident. Akbar was lynched by villagers in Lalawandi on suspicion of smuggling cows on Friday. The Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a report from the Vasundhara Raje government. “A four-member committee of senior police officials is in Alwar to enquire into the matter,” state Director General of Police (DGP) O P Galhotra told said. It will also be probed whether the 28-year-old was a victim of police beating on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. Appropriate action would be taken if any lapses were found in the enquiry report, the DGP said. The committee comprises of special DGP (law and order) N R K Reddy, Additional DGP (CID-Crime Branch) P K Singh, Inspector General (Jaipur Range) Hemant Priyadarshi and state nodal officer (cow vigilance) Mahendra Singh Chaudhary, Galhotra informed in a statement here. of the big challenges. The state government, on its part, has urges the Commission to increase devolution to over 50 per cent, expand the net divisible pool, and

A city stolen from the sea: The greed that breeds Mumbai’s struggles with rain

Mumbai : Gregory David Roberts, the author of the bestselling novel Shantaram, is believed to have once remarked that “more dreams are realised and extinguished in Bombay than in any other place in India”. Mumbai, the city of dreams, desires, glamour, and fame has for decades attracted all of India to dwell in it and to revel in the life of struggle and toil it has to offer. The story of Mumbai began when Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed on the Southwestern coast of India in the late fifteenth century. Within a decade the Portuguese gained a stronghold over Bombay which was then seven separate islets. What the Portuguese began, the British took forward in the

seventeenth century. Under them, the city took a new birth, transformed itself and shone like a gem attracting merchants, traders, bankers from all over the world. In the next couple of centuries, the British went on to alter the city’s architectural space, building tall gothic structures, reclaiming lands submerged under the sea and constructing roadways,

Cows are safer than women in the country, says Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray

New Delhi: Ratcheting up tensions with its ally BJP, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday said in the name of protecting the cow, India had become the most unsafe country for women. He also launched a stinging attack on the government over incidents of mob lynching across the country. “We (Shiv Sena) never said cows should be slaughtered. But while protecting cows, India has become the most unsafe country for women. One should be ashamed of it. You want to save ‘gau-mata’ (cow) but what about ‘mata’ (mother),” Thackeray said in a no-holds-barred interview to Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamna’. Thackeray said for over 25 years, the Shiv Sena and BJP were allies because of the shared ideology of Hindutva, the status of Hindus, national interest and the country’s security among others. “I do not accept the idea of Hindutva that is being adhered to in the country.

bunds and drainage systems. In the process of building and rebuilding the city under the colonial regimes, Bombay in itself was becoming a colonising force. Trapped under the brutal maneuvers of colonialism it began oppressing those it attracted through crowded streets and shanties, deplorable living and working conditions and regular outbreaks of disease.

MS Dhoni would say performance in England hasn’t been up to expectations, says Sachin Tendulkar

New Delhi : Former India skipper MS Dhoni failed to leave a mark in the T20I and ODI series against England and was criticised for his slow scoring-rate. Despite the criticism, the wicket-keeper batsman has got the support of Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar who feels that a player of Dhoni’s stature should be allowed to take a call on his career during an interview with Mumbai Mirror. “My answer is very simple. I know people are talking about a lot of things. It is not about what XYZ think. I have read Mr. Gavaskar’s statement and seen Sourav’s remark that Dhoni needs to do more. But if you speak to MS himself, he would also say that it (the performance in England) has not been up to his expectations. And that’s the thing. Players try to perform to their expectations,” Tendulkar said. “The player only has to take the call. A player of his caliber, who has been around for a long time, knows what is expected of him. And where he stands. So, I will leave the decision to him,” he added. Talking about his experience, Tendulkar said that Dhoni has the best understanding of his game and he is the best person to decide on his career. “He has played enough cricket and

he understands his game better than anyone else. He understands his own mindset too. So, I think one should leave everything to him. Being a colleague of him, I know of him and I think he is the best person to decide on his career.” Mentioning about the changes in the Indian playing XI, Tendulkar said the changes that are being made have got nothing to do with the form. “World Cup? Well, it is all up to what he (Dhoni) thinks. I don’t know what are the plans of the captain (Virat Kohli) and coach (Ravi Shastri). We are almost a year away for the World Cup, so there is a lot of time. If you have seen the recent three ODIs and Twenty20 International games, there were changes in the team that had nothing to do with the form. There could be a number of challenges for a player – some could be fitness challenges and some could be form challenges.

RJD spokesperson who criticised Rahul Gandhi for hugging PM Modi expelled

New Delhi : The Rashtriya Janata Dal on Monday expelled its national spokesperson Shankar Charan Tripathi from the party for criticising its alliance leader Rahul Gandhi for hugging Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the debate on No Confidence Motion in Lok Sabha last week. Tripathi had lashed

out at the Congress president for hugging the prime minister, and

later winking, during the no-confidence motion moved by the

TDP in Lok Sabha on Friday. Talking to The Telegraph, Tripathi had said, “He (Rahul Gandhi) has been a parliamentarian for the past 15 years. “It was not expected from a leader like him to wink on the floor of the House. So many cameras are installed in the house. Ward and watch people are also

there. In such a situation he winked. His act was akin to that of Priya Prakash Varrier, whose act of winking in a clip of the movie Oru Adaar Love propped her to stardom.” He also said that Gandhi’s act was childish and unexpected from a person who considers himself a prime ministerial candidate in 2019.

Arvind Subramanian’s inspirational legacy

It was late at night and we were wrapping up the day’s work on the first Economic Survey under chief economic adviser (CEA) Arvind Subramanian. A Gita-esque discussion on the motivation of technocrats and its manifestations in the realm of realpolitik ensued. Subramanian invoked Marc Anthony’s speech from Julius Caesar almost in its entirety: “Friends, Romans and countrymen... Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.” The lines flowed in characteristic Subramanian enthusiasm as Rabindranath Tagore’s picture, hanging on the office wall, stared approvingly. What drives us— influence or impact, power or proletariat? How can we consistently say what is true to the government and to the nation? There were many epic moments like these in TeamCEA’s sojourn. Four years hence, Subramanian generates fierce loyalty among his team. To an outsider, it may look like a random group of nerdy young economists who crunch numbers for their boss, which is not untrue. But the emotional and intellectual bond that connects its members to each other, and to its captain, takes work to another level. Subramanian has said this is the best job he has ever had. For most, if not all, team members, working for him is the best job they have ever had. It is a high that will be hard to match. The team’s role is to frame policy puzzles, provide in-depth empirical analyses, and offer potential solutions to the powers that be. At the core, as Subramanian mentioned in an interview, the primary job of the office of the chief economic adviser is to “feed the ecosphere of ideas and policies”. Subramanian did justice to that ideal by asking big questions. “My friends,” his eyes would light up, “I have a new idea for us to explore” or “Can we talk about this humble insight.” This would kickstart an intellectual and institutional rush—detailed discussions on the idea followed by phone calls to all corners of government to source the required data, collation of all the results and their framing into a theoretical narrative, and then the final literary push to communicate it all in an elegant lexicon. “Read, read, read,” he would say “till you’ve understood what you have written”. When JAM (Jan DhanAadhaar-Mobile) became popular parlance; when “competitive and cooperative federalism” was quoted by the highest-ranking officials; when the “twinbalance sheet problem with Indian characteristics” captured macroeconomic mores; when “socialism without entry, to capitalism without exit” flooded the edit pages of national and international newspapers; when the “mother and child” chapter in Economic Survey 2015-16 reinvigorated discussions on maternal health; when the massive online open course on the Indian economy reached millions of students; or when both treasury and opposition benches referred to the Subramanian report in a highquality parliamentary debate on the goods.

Rajshri Deshpande discusses playing strong female characters in Sacred Games, S Durga, Nandita Das' Manto biopic

Mumbai : After 17 years India won back the Miss World title, which was last bagged by Priyanka Chopra in 2000. Manushi Chillar was crowned Miss World 2017 on November 18,last year, by outgoing titleholder Miss World 2016 Stephanie Del Valle from Puerto Rico. The girl is not just impressing each one of us with her charismatic smile, but also toned abs

and on point dressing sense. Manushi who has embraced the crown, has always been on the go, either for work or a much needed holiday! The beauty with brains has been making quite a lot of public appearances and has become a global star. From Sanya in China to New York to London, the dynamic lady is visiting places and making memories. Her stunning photos are a proof of that! She has been traveling to various destinations and will continue to do so for a while.

New Delhi: When Sacred Games actor Rajshri Deshpande (who created a stir as Subhadra in Netflix India’s first original series), was being trolled for the love-making scenes, the single most thought that occupied Deshpande’s mind was building schools and toilets in the village she had adopted. The scene which she refers to as, “the tender moment between a husband and wife, had made its way to porn sites. Worse still, the actress was sent screenshots of the scenes followed by messages saying she was a porn star. However, Deshpande remains unfazed. In fact, she says she’s too busy to get hassled about such petty things. “Those scenes were part of the narrative structure. It’s not titillating at all and I never react to such things. I don’t have the time. Instead, I have been thinking about building schools in the village I have adopted. They don’t have toilets in the school which is bad for girls,” says Deshpande, who plays Ganesh Gaitonde’s (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) wife in the original. Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane-directed Sacred Games was an enriching experience for Deshpande who has also starred in Angry Indian Goddesses (2015) and Sexy Durga (2017), later retitled S Durga for its India release after running into trouble with Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). “Fortunately, I have become famous for good reasons as well. If the intention of people involved in the web series, those who have adapted the book — Varun Grover (writer), Anurag Kashyap, and the research team behind them — is good then you don’t have to worry about trolls. Each and every frame is designed by the writer. And when I know that the narrators are this good, then I am no one to question the scenes. Anurag sir had even told me that I could tell him if I was uncomfortable. But I don’t have any such inhibitions. I was only portraying love,” says Deshpande, further adding, “I have also read Vikram Chandra’s book and it is so amazingly written that I finished it in 10 days.

Sarfraz Ahmed tries to copy MS Dhoni, Pakistan skipper gets hit for six

Mumbai: Pakistan registered a comprehensive 131run win vs. Zimbabwe in the final ODI of their five-match series, thus completing a series whitewash in the process. Towards the end of Zimbabwe’s innings, Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed - much like former India skipper MS Dhoni did once upon a time - decided to roll his arm over. Sarfraz’s first over went well, as he conceded just 6 runs. However, it was his second over that saw disaster struck. Bowling the last over of the match, Sarfraz was hammered for six by Zimbabwe’s Peter

Moor. MS Dhoni has one international wicket to his name. Dhoni had dismissed West Indies’ Travis Dowlin in an ICC Champions Trophy match in 2009. Sarfraz’s place behind the stumps was taken up by Fakhar Zaman in the two overs the skipper bowled. After the match, Ahmed looked ahead to the sixteam Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in September. “We learned lots of things here, and hopefully we’ll take that to the Asia Cup,” he said. “We definitely need some rest now, so we’ll go home for a bit before returning to training to prepare for the Asia Cup.”

‘I’m German When I Win, Immigrant When I Lose’: Ozil Quits Germany Football Team Ozil, who has Turkish roots, had been under fire since posing for a controversial photograph with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May which sparked questions about his loyalty to Germany's squad ahead of the tournament in Russia.

Berlin, Germany: Mesut Ozil said Sunday he was quitting the German national football team, citing “racism” in the criticism of him after the side’s World Cup debacle. Ozil, who has Turkish roots, had been under fire since posing for a controversial photograph with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in May which sparked questions about his loyalty to Germany’s squad ahead of the tournament in Russia. In a four-page statement sent out in three images on Twitter and Instagram, an angry Ozil saved his bombshell for the final salvo. “It is with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of recent events, I will no longer be playing for Germany at international level whilst I have this feeling of racism and disrespect,” he said. The Arsenal

midfielder blamed the German Football Federation (DFB) for failing to defend him against his most strident critics. “Arguably the issue that has frustrated me the most over the past couple of months has been the mistreatment from the DFB, and in particular the DFB President Richard Grindel,” he said. He said that Grindel and Germany coach Joachim Loew had asked him to give a “joint statement to end all the talk and set the record straight” over the picture with Erdogan. “Whilst I attempted to explain to Grindel my heritage, ancestry and therefore reasoning behind the photo, he was far more interested in speaking about his own political views and belittling my opinion.” Ozil, 29, said he had been unfairly blamed in Germany for the side’s shock firstround defeat at the World Cup.

Appliance Makers, Retailers Expect Sales Boost After GST Rate Cut

Mumbai: Home appliance makers and electronics retailers expect an extended boost in demand, first driven by a lower goods and services tax rate and followed by the festival season. The immediate push is expected from a 10 percent drop in the tax rate. The GST Council lowered rate on a number of appliances, including washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners, to 18 percent from 28 percent. That comes about a couple of months before India’s festival season— considered auspicious to buy everything from gold, cars and appliances— kicks off in September end. Companies will pass on the cut to consumers, Vijay Sales’ Managing Partner Nilesh Gupta told BloombergQuint. “The entire consumer durables bucket will see an 8-10 percent surge in sales over the next eight months. The industry will start advertising. Everyone will be in a gung-ho mood,” he said, adding that consumer sentiment will drive sales growth. Agreed Atul Lall, managing director of contract manufacturer Dixon Technologies (India) Ltd. “All that (rate cut) is going to be passed on to our customers (manufacturers) who I feel, in turn, are going to pass it on to end consumers,” he told BloombergQuint. “I don’t see a margin expansion taking place, but it will be a significant volume booster.” Shares of all but one constituent of the BSE Consumer Durables Index rose. Blue Start Ltd., Whirlpool of India Ltd., Symphony Ltd. and Voltas Ltd. closed 1.3 to 5.3 percent higher. The run-up to the festive season is usually a quiet phase for appliance sales. Moreover, the last few quarters haven’t been that great, according to Godrej Appliances. The consumer durables industry has been struggling for six quarters, growing in low single digit, said Kamal Nandi, business head and executive vice-president at Godrej Appliances.

Gujarat College Cuts Comic Kunal Kamra’s Gig For “Anti-National” Content

VADODARA: Vadodara-based MS University has cancelled a show by stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra on security grounds after a group of former students wrote to varsity officials, claiming his content is “anti-national”. A local organisation had booked the university auditorium for a show by Mr Kamra on August 11. However, the office of MSU Vice-Chancellor Parimal Vyas on Saturday issued direction to the auditorium to cancel the show. “We were directed by the office of the vicechancellor to cancel the show after a group of former students made a representation before him, saying the

content of the stand-up comedian is antinational,” said auditorium co-ordinator Rakesh Modi. “We were concerned about the security of the venue which is why we decided to cancel the show,” he said. In their representation submitted last week opposing the event, the group said,

“What message do we want to convey by organising such anti-national flagbearer youth comedian’s comedy show in Gujarat’s most prestigious university campus?” The group, consisting of 11 ex-students, said the content of his shows was “anti-national” since he “mimics national anthem” and “openly supports tukde-tukde gang (divisive forces)”. Responding to the development, Mr Karma yesterday took to Twitter to say, “Ever been so cool that you find out from the news that you’re not going to be working on a particular day?
