The Chief Minister, who was monitoring the rescue and relief operations from the Secretariat here, decided to visit the camps to get a firsthand knowledge of the sufferings of the people, many of whom had lost their homes and belongings in the floods, the worst in the last 100 years. As the flood waters receded from their houses, people have complained of snakes, including cobras, crawling all over the place.

New Delhi: Attacking Congress president Rahul Gandhi for “belittling” and “insulting” India in his address at an event in Germany, the BJP on Thursday sought the Congress chief’s apology for his comments on a range of issues, which the ruling party alleged had presented India in a bad light. Reacting sharply to Mr Gandhi’s ISIS analogy, the BJP said the Congress leader had not only justified the terror outfit but also denigrated the minority community. Mr Gandhi had addressed a gathering at Bucerius Summer School in Hamburg, Germany, on Wednesday, where he cited the example of the Islamic State terrorist group to say that the exclusion of a large number of people from the development process could lead to the creation of insurgent groups anywhere in the world. He said the BJP government

had excluded tribals, dalits and the minorities from the development narrative, and “this could be a dangerous thing”. “If you do not give people a vision in the 21st century, somebody else will. And that is the real risk of excluding a large number of people from the development process,” Mr Gandhi said. He also linked incidents of lynching in India to joblessness and lack of opportunities for the poor. Hitting back at the Congress president, BJP spokesman Sambit Patra said Mr Gandhi “left no opportunity to belittle India and present it in a bad light”, and that his speech was “full of lies and deception, and its sole aim was to insult India”. Taking a dig at Mr Gandhi, the BJP leader said: “Rahul Gandhi has behaved like Rahul Gandhi, and expecting any maturity from him is a futile exercise.”

country would have been diseasefree by now if programmes like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan were introduced 70 years back. Taking a swipe at the Opposition, Modi said he was mocked for these programmes, which are aimed at making a healthy nation. “There has been a recent WHO report, (which states) that just because of (by ensuring) cleanliness, three lakh children can be saved from dying in India, such is the situation.

The prime minister is in Gujarat to inaugurate several projects and attend the convocation ceremony of Gujarat Forensic Science University in Gandhinagar.

Rahul belittled India in Germany, lied through his teeth to attack govt: BJP

New Delhi: The BJP on Thursday accused Rahul Gandhi of belittling India in his address at an event in Germany, alleging that the Congress president justified terrorism and “lied through his teeth” to attack the Modi government. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra sought explanation from the Congress chief on his comments on a range of issues, claiming that he presented India in a bad light by allegedly blaming its culture for violence against women. Addressing a gathering

The challenge of rebuilding Kerala

As the flood waters recede gradually in Kerala and the Kodagu district of Karnataka, the focus will begin to shift from relief operations to rebuilding. The trail of destruction is a long one. The initial estimates provide us with some idea about the scale of the task ahead. For example, 10,000km of roads as well as 100,000 houses will need to be rebuilt in Kerala. It is quite likely that the numbers will rise as more detailed surveys are conducted. The damage to economic life in the hilly regions of the two southern states will also need to be assessed. The ongoing relief work has received support from across the country, be it other state governments or individuals or private sector organizations. The reconstruction work will need something more than voluntary effort, though even that would be welcome in communities that have been uprooted by the rising waters. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has sought ₹2,600 crore from the Union government to help his government rebuild the state. The state government has also asked New Delhi to increase the amount it can borrow from the bond market. There is a strong case for the Narendra Modi government to agree to this demand. Indian state governments have signed off on fiscal laws that restrict the amount they can borrow based on fiscal deficit targets. Such fiscal laws across the world have inbuilt flexibility that allow the borrowing limits to be crossed in the case of special circumstances such as a sharp recession or wars or natural calamities. That is true of Indian fiscal laws as well. Kerala, and to a lesser extent Karnataka, have faced the sort of natural calamity that should allow for a one-time easing of fiscal constraints. The Reserve Bank of India could also offer immediate liquidity support through a special ways and means advances (WMA) window. One possible way to reduce the cost of reconstruction would be the issue of special bonds at interest rates that are far lower than what the bond market would demand. Here is an idea. This newspaper suggests that it would be worth structuring a bond where the interest costs of the borrowing are shared by three entities—the Union government can waive taxes; individuals across the world, including the Kerala diaspora, can accept lower interest rates; and the state government will be left with an interest rate that is around a third of what would otherwise have to be paid to investors. Of course, such bonds should be used only in special circumstances. The use of the money will also need to be tracked. Financial markets can have another potential role in the case of future episodes in the country, especially given the context of climate change.

Mommy goals done differently

Hollywood - Bollywood Diana Penty will be seen next in Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi. The actor shares screen space with Sonakshi Sinha who plays the lead in the sequel of the 2016 hit flick.

Was apprehensive about the sequel but was sold on the script : Diana Penty

New Delhi : There’s no hard and fast rule when it comes to motherhood. While for some women, having a baby means spending more time at home, it need not be the same for others. Take for instance, Soha Ali Khan and her sister-inlaw Kareena Kapoor. Soha believes in being a hands-on mom. She has let her career take a backseat so that she can always be around her little angel. But her sister-in-law Kareena is redefining the concept of a working mother. Being a doting mom to her one-year-old Taimur doesn’t stand in the way of her career goals

or social life. A family friend of the Khan family says, “Soha is happy to be a full-time mother. Kareena, while enjoying her motherly duties, won’t give herself 24/7 to her little boy. That’s why we see Taimur more with his nanny. This is not to say that Kareena is not a good mother. She is just not willing to be unconditionally handson.” However, the family friend can’t help but recall Sharmila Tagore’s motherhood journey and says, “Sharmilaji did all her most successful films after becoming a mother and still brought up her three children beautifully.”

New Delhi : Diana Penty made her Bollywood debut with Deepika Padukone starrer Cocktail in 2012. She made a comeback with 2016 comedy film Happy Bhag Jayegi. Now, in 2018, she will be seen in Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi which is headlined by Sonakshi Sinha. In a conversation with indianexpress. com, Diana talks about the Happy Bhag Jayegi sequel, Sonakshi Sinha and more. Q. Were you expecting a sequel to Happy Bhag Jayegi? I was very apprehensive about the sequel to Happy Bhag Jayegi when Mudassar first told me about it. The first thought was – How will he live up to the first part? But when I heard the narration, I was confident that he has cracked it. I remember we both were laughing at every scene along the way. Imagine, if it was that funny at the script level, what it would be on the screen? I have no doubt in my mind that people are going to enjoy it. I am absolutely confident about the film’s success. Q. You headlined this film in the first part. In the sequel,

we can say that you have supported Sonakshi Sinha’s character and the story. What do you feel about the transition? To be honest, I was the happiest that Sonakshi Sinha was going to play the part of Happy in the sequel as I feel she fits the role. In real life too, she is quite close to the character. She is bubbly, vivacious, energetic and very much a Happy. When I met Mudassar and Aanand and they narrated the script to me, I realised how important it was for both the Happys to be part of the

Sushant Singh Rajput’s a Chhichora!

Mumbai: Filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari has finally picked a name for his upcoming film starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor and Prateik Babbar — Chhichora. The film is said to be about three students of an engineering college in north India. Says a source close to the film, “The film is about students who are less interested in studies, and more interested in stalking women.

So Chhichora is an apt title for it. It’s a word that’s commonly used in the north, and so it will ring a bell.” This film will be Tiwari’s fourth directorial venture after Chhillar Party, Bhoothnath Returns, and Dangal. It is slated for release in August 2019. We are told that workshops will be conducted for the cast over the next few weeks, and the film will go on floors in October.

story. This is definitely Sonakshi’s film but I am more than happy to support her and the script and to take it forward. There are too many elements in the film that make the film so much fun that I did not even have an ounce of doubt about being a part of it. Also, why I think we remained with the film is because we feel this film is our baby. The first installment did so well that you feel proud. And I am glad the film has gone bigger and better with Sonakshi joining the franchise.

Sonam Kapoor meets sports journalists as part of her prep for Zoya Factor

Mumbai: Sonam Kapoor who recently returned from the US has started work on her next, as she steps into the shoes of Zoya Solanki, the muchloved character from Anuja Chauhan’s novel “The Zoya Factor” which will be adapted for the big screen. Since Chauhan’s novels have been described as tailor-made for screen adaptations, Sonam

who is a voracious reader herself, earlier this year met the author to better understand her character. Sonam has also started her reading sessions with co-star Dulquer Salmaan and also met with sports journalists who have been covering cricket as part of her prep for the film. Given that the star essays the role of an advertising executive who ends

up becoming a lucky charm for the team at the Cricket World Cup, she will soon meet advertising professionals to understand the dynamics of the field. 2.0 leaked video shows Rajinikanth, Amy Jackson dancing to AR Rahman song

Bengaluru : A small clip from a BBC news report about upcoming sci-fi film 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, has surfaced online. The video report shot during the shooting of a song featuring Rajinikanth and Amy Jackson gives us a glimpse of the state-of-

the-art technology used in the much-awaited film. The leaked video mainly focuses on Amy introducing her as the female lead “in the most expensive Indian film ever made.” And it also has an interview with top Hollywood technician Ray Hannisian, a 3D stereographer. Ray claims

that working on the project was a dream come true moment for him. “This is the gig I have been dreaming of (for 50 years). These cameras are the most precise I think that has ever been built,” Ray says in the video. The usual practice in India is to shoot the film as 2D and convert it

into the 3D format. However, 2.0 is the first Indian film to be shot directly with 3D cameras that puts itself in a class apart from all the 3D films that have been made in the country so far. “I don’t want to disparage Hollywood, but I’m having more fun over here than I ever did there,” Ray adds.

Asian Games 2018: Ankita Raina wins Bronze medal in Indonesia

Mumbai: Novak Djokovic heads into the US Open in sizzling form after collecting a fourth Wimbledon title and completing a sweep of Masters series events over the last month, but the Serb admits there were times when the long road back from injury brought “more than a few moments of doubt” about his future. An elbow injury forced Djokovic to retire against Czech Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2017. After that came a series of early tournament exits and, finally, surgery. “I think one of the biggest things I’ve learned about myself is how impatient I was,” the 13-time Grand Slam winner told

reporters on Wednesday, reflecting on his recovery process. “That was probably one of the hardest ways for me to learn to be patient. “I’ve never faced any major injury in my career – (for) which I was very fortunate,” Djokovic added. “But I guess even with the care that I had the body took a lot of beating and eventually I had to address the elbow injury more seriously.” With the world’s best players descending on Flushing, Queens next week, Djokovic is aiming to add a third US Open title to his name — and to perfect his serve. “It’s still a work in progress with the serve, to be honest,” Djokovic said.

jakarta : The 25-yearold Tennis player Ankita Raina secured a Bronze medal for India, becoming only the second female tennis player from the country to win a medal in singles’ competition at the Asian Games, only after Sania Mirza won a silver in Doha in 2006, followed by a bronze in 2010, Guangzhou. Raina went down 4-6, 7-6 against China’s Zhang Shuai in the semifinal match after

a hard-fought battle and could not reach the final. The current Indian No. 1, who hails from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, defeated Hong Kong’s Eudice Wong Chong in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinal to enter the semifinal on Wednesday. But playing against a vastly more experienced opponent on Thursday, Raina could not go past the Zhang to enter the final.

Mumbai: India skipper Virat Kohli regained the top position in ICC Test Batting Rankings after the third Test match against England at Trent Bridge. The 29-year old struck his 23rd century in the second innings and also scored 97 in the first innings in a match which India won by 203 runs. Kohli, who was named as the Player of the Match, reached 937 rating points, a career-best for him, to become the current No.1 Test batsman in the world according to ICC Rankings. The righthand batsman had earlier reached the position two weeks ago after the first Test match in the series at Edgbaston in which he scored a hard-fought 149. But after registering scores of 23 and

17 in the second Test, Kohli slipped from the spot, giving the banned Australian cricket Steve Smith his original top position. Kohli is now only a point away from breaking into the top ten position on all-time points list which feature Bradman (961 points), Steven Smith (947), Len Hutton (945), Jack Hobbs and Ricky Ponting (both on 942), Peter May (941), and Gary Sobers, Clyde Walcott, Vivian Richards and Kumar Sangakkara (all on 938 points). Hardik Pandya, who impressed with a fifer in the third Test, and also scored a half-century in the second innings, also saw a jump of 27 points in all-rounders’ list, to reach 17th position in the rankings.

His teammate Ankur Mittal failed to qualify, finishing at the ninth position with a score of 134. In Flood-prone areas of Banaskantha: CM Vijay Rupani idea gets wings, 600 families to be relocated Ahmedabad : A year after Chief Minister Vijay Rupani floated the idea of relocating residents of some of the flood-affected villages of Banaskantha and Patan districts, the state government is set to relocate around 500600 families of five villages from two tehsils of Banaskantha which have been repeatedly facing the brunt of floods. The five villages are Nagla, Dodgam and Khanpur of Tharad tehsil, and Kuda and Jasara of Lakhni tehsil of the district. Third Brazilian soldier dies after massive anti-drug raid in Rio slums

Rio De Janeiro : A third Brazilian soldier, wounded in a sweeping operation this week targeting warring drug gangs in slums across Rio de Janeiro, has died, the army said on Wednesday. At least five civilians and two soldiers died in the coordinated raids across violent neighborhoods in the north of the city on Monday, the army said at the time. However, on Wednesday, authorities said a third soldier, who had been wounded in the raids, died of injuries that had initially been considered treatable. The soldiers are the first troops to die in a six-month-old federal intervention in Rio, which has been criticized for military tactics, a lack of transparency and unclear goals. In February, President Michel Temer announced emergency measures authorizing the army to take command of police forces in Rio de Janeiro state, where drug gangs and militias have triggered a sharp rise in violence. New York : The plea deal reached by Donald Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen has laid bare a relationship between the president and the publisher of the National Enquirer that goes well beyond the tabloid’s screaming headlines. Besides detailing the tabloid’s involvement in payoffs to porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal to keep quiet about alleged affairs with Trump, court papers showed how David Pecker, a longtime friend of the president and head of Enquirer parent company American Media Inc., offered to help Trump stave off negative stories during the 2016 campaign. Court papers say that Pecker “offered to help deal with negative stories about (Trump’s) relationships with women by, among other things, assisting the campaign in identifying such stories so they could be purchased and their publication avoided.” The accusations threaten Pecker’s company, American Media Inc., both legally and in the court of public opinion. The relationship between Trump and the Enquirer has been cozy for decades. Former National Enquirer employees who spoke to the AP said that negative stories about Trump were dead on arrival dating back to when he starred on NBC’s reality show “The Apprentice.” In 2010, at Cohen’s urging, the National Enquirer began promoting a potential Trump presidential candidacy, referring readers to a pro-Trump website Cohen helped create. With Cohen’s involvement, the publication began questioning President Barack Obama’s birthplace and American citizenship in print, an effort that Trump promoted for several years, former staffers said. The Enquirer endorsed Trump for president in 2016, the first time it had ever officially backed a candidate. In the news pages, Trump’s coverage was so favourable that the New Yorker magazine said the Enquirer embraced him “with sycophantic fervour.” Positive headlines for Trump were matched by negative stories about his opponents: an Enquirer front page from 2015 said “Hillary: 6 Months to Live” and accompanied the headline with a picture of an unsmiling Clinton with bags under her eyes.
