The deceased personnel have been identified as–Major Prafulla, Sepoy Pargarh and Sepoy Gurmeet Singh of 2 Sikh battalion. Sources said that casualties took place when Pakistani troops suddenly opened fire on an Indian Army patrol moving on its Indian

side of the LoC in Keri sector around 12.15 pm. However, it could not be immediately known whether there had been any retaliation from the Indian side. Though there had been stray incidents of firing from Pakistani troops on forward Indian positions along the LoC in adjoining Nowshera sector, the latest ceasefire at

such a scale has come after nearly a month. Though travel and trade between two sides have resumed last week, those having migrated from their native places are yet to return home.

Manohar Parrikar compromising Goa’s interests on Mahadeyi river, says Shiv Sena

Panaji : The Goa unit of the Shiv Sena has accused Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar of compromising Goa’s interests on the Mahadeyi river. The Sena’s accusations come after Parrikar recently wrote to BJP’s Karnataka chief B Yeddyurappa expressing willingness to have bilateral talks to release Mahadeyi river water to Karnataka for drinking purposes.

“We condemn Parrikar’s move to allow the water from River Mahadeyi to be diverted by Karnataka government. The move is clearly chalked out for the sake of winning upcoming elections (in Karnataka),” Sena’s Goa spokesperson Rakhi Prabhudessai Naik said in a statement issued at Panaji. “Parrikar should not have agreed

to sell the interest of Goa for his party’s victory in Karnataka,” she added. “He (Parrikar) has made a mockery of the Goan people who have high respect for his statesmanship. Parrikar should not forget that he is Goan first, and then a BJP leader,” she said. The party also expressed surprise over the silence of the Goa Forward Party, the BJP’s ally, on the issue.

India should break away from its ‘permanent poll mode’

As expected the BJP won the recent state elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shifted focus to the forthcoming elections in the Northeast. Given that numerous other critical matters involving national security need the urgent attention of our tireless Prime Minister, it is perhaps time that both the Central and state elections are held either simultaneously or almost simultaneously. As the world is moving closer to possibility of war in the Korean peninsula, and China has permanently based 1,800 troops in Doklam, India apparently remains in near-permanent election mode. In the meantime, President Donald Trump has announced a new National Security Strategy (NSS) on December 18 to deal with the emerging threats, while our timetested strategic partner Russia is increasingly aligning with China to confront the United States. To add fuel to the fire, the Pakistani national security adviser has recently stated that “a nuclear war in South Asia cannot be ruled out”. This article seeks to show what new threats have now emerged, along with two frequently used phrases by the media and the strategic community — “Thucydides Trap” and “sharp power”. First, President Trump’s NSS 2017 recognises the challenges to the US from China, Russia, emphasises the importance of a strong military, proactive homeland defence against terror and missile attacks, envisions a radical upgrade in US industrial base, largescale support for scientific and technical education and rebuilding of infrastructure in response to China’s economic and strategic challenge. Other details include retaliation against “economic aggression” by states who exploit free trade selectively, and embracing “emergency dominance” by removing restrictions on shale oil exploitation and nuclear energy, a new system of alliances centring on Japan and India to counter China’s economic diplomacy in Asia. And finally, the NSS recognises India as an emerging global power while portraying China and Pakistan as antithetical to US interests. Thucydides was an Athenian (Greek) general and historian of fifth century BC, when he wrote: “What made war inevitable was the growth of Athenian power and the fear which this caused in Sparta.” In the 1970s, American political scientist Professor Graham Tillett Allison, Jr. coined the phrase “Thucydides Trap” to refer to “when a rising power (China) causes fear in an established power (the US), which escalates towards war”. The term “hard power” refers to coercion by a country using its military and economic power. On the other hand, “soft power” is based on attraction, arising out of the positive appeal of a country’s culture, political ideals, policies, as well as a vibrant independent civil society.

The actress reveals that the plan is to take an all-girls’ trip. “Yes, I have my New Year’s plan in place. This is going on my fridge: David Ayer on Bright bad review

David Ayer’s latest film Bright has been panned by critics all the way but the director is not sore about it. The Fury director re-teamed with his Suicide Squad star Will Smith for the Netflix’s project, which also featured Joel Edgerton, Ike Barinholtz, Lucy Fry, Noomi Rapace and Edgar

Ramirez. However, several critics have criticised the film with Entertainment portal Indiewire’s critic David Ehrlich called the film “profoundly awful,” “dull” and “painfully derivative” in his review. “The only thing more predictable than this high-concept police story is the idea that a year as

punishing as 2017 would save the worst for last,” wrote Ehrlich in his review. Retweeting the link of the review, Ayer praised Ehrlich for his creative criticism. “This is going on my fridge. This is a f**king epic review. It’s a big fun movie. You can sure string words together Mr. Erlich

(sic). I’d love to read any script you’ve written,” tweeted Ayer. Ehrlich paid the compliment back to the director, calling Ayer a “good man” and said he will be ready with “fresh eyes” for his next directorial outing. “I really appreciate that. Every movie is a labour of love for me.

GST: Govt allows companies to paste MRP stickers till March

New Delhi: The government has allowed companies, till March 2018, to paste price stickers on unsold packaged products to reflect new MRP post GST, Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Saturday. After Goods and Services Tax (GST) became effective from July 1, companies were asked to use stickers on unsold packaged commodities to display new maximum retail price (MRP) till September, which was later extended till December. When rates of about 200 items were cut in mid-November, the ministry permitted to paste additional stickers under the the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. “In case of GST, we allowed companies to paste stickers on unsold packaged

products till December. In last GST council meeting, GST rates have been reduced for about 200 items. So, we have decided to extend the December deadline to March 2018,” Paswan told reporters here. Last month, the ministry had allowed to “affix an additional sticker or stamping or online printing for declaring the reduced MRP on the pre-packaged commodity”. As many as 178 items of daily use have been shifted from the top tax bracket of 28 per cent to 18 per cent, while a uniform 5 per cent tax was prescribed for all restaurants, both air- conditioned and non-AC. To ensure GST cuts are passed on to consumers, Paswan had recently directed state legal metrology officers to check if companies are pasting the new MRP stickers.

Ahmedabad : Babu Bajrangi, who is serving life term after being convicted in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riots case, has moved a petition in the Gujarat High Court seeking temporary bail for 20 days for eye treatment. Bajrangi claims to have lost eye sight and also being unable to hear from one ear. Division bench headed Justice Harsha Devani sought medial records of Bajrangi from jail authorities and adjourned the hearing, said his lawyer Jagat Patel. The matter is likely to be taken up on Friday. Bajrangi is lodged at Sabarmati Central Jail since 2012 after he was convicted with 30 others, including former BJP minister Maya Kodnani, for his role in the killing 97 Muslims on February 28, 2002 in the Naroda Patiya incident, which was triggered by the Godhra train burning incident. The appeal petitions in this case are pending for judgment. In previous attempts, Bajrangi’s both regular and temporary bail pleas have been rejected after granting him time for treatment. He had sought mercy from the Gujarat Governor for clemency on the ground that he has lost eye sight.

ACP Reema Munshi gets relief from Gujarat High Court Ahmedabad : A division bench of the Gujarat High Court on Thursday gave relief to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Reema Munshi while allowing an appeal against a single bench order of the HC which had directed her to “vacate the public office.” Holding that Munshi had manipulated her physical test results during the recruitment process in 2011, the single bench had directed the state government to appoint the petitioner Neha Parmar, who is the next meritorious candidate. Munshi had filed an appeal against this order. On Thursday, justices Akil Kureshi and A Y Kogje allowed Parmar’s lawyer Rahul Sharma’s request to stay the order. Meanwhile, Munshi continues to be on leave. During the recruitment in June 2011, Munshi was examined thrice by standing medical board, Ahmedabad. On each occasion she was declared unfit by the board. The petitioner has alleged that although recruitment notice was published in June 2006, lists of successful candidates were declared five years later in 2011.

In a first, Mike Pence pays surprise visit to US troops in Afghanistan Kabul: Vice President Mike Pence told US troops in Afghanistan Thursday that they have put the Taliban on the run, as he became the most senior Trump administration official to visit the men and women fighting America’s longest-ever war. Flying secretly through the day and night on a standard unmarked US Air Force C-17 transport plane, Pence corkscrewed into Bagram Airfield on the unannounced visit to thank some of the roughly 15,000 US personnel still hoping to turn the tide in the conflict, now in its 17th year. The superpower’s vexed campaign against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban -- born from the rubble of the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington -- receives ever-less public attention in the United States these days. “The American people deserve to know that with the courage of everyone gathered here, we’re making real progress in this fight for freedom in Afghanistan,”

Pence told the troops. “We’ve dramatically increased American air strikes. And together with our Afghan partners, we’ve put the Taliban on the defensive,” he said, also pointing at efforts to target the drug trafficking networks that help fund the Taliban. “All across this country we’ve won new victories against the terrorists, no matter what they call themselves or where they try to hide.” “And never doubt that your mission -- your mission here in Afghanistan -- is vital to the safety and security of the American people,” the vice

president said. Pence’s visit was designed to shift the spotlight back on personnel and their mission, however briefly, before Americans turn their focus to turkey lunches, festive cheer and contentious domestic politics. His visit also included a helicopter dash from Bagram into the heart of the capital Kabul to meet President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, both of whom the United States is counting on to help rebuild this war-shattered country. “We’ve been on a long road together” he said. “We’ve both sacrificed much.”
