Sign of deepening malady in society

The increasing frequency of lynching incidents in the country is symptomatic of a deepening malady in our society, which also implies a breakdown of law and order. Lynching used to happen in incidents relating to cow vigilantism, suspicion of involvement in child-lifting, or, sometimes, religious conversions. Some of the recent cases, however, show that mob violence just sets off and the provocation becomes secondary. The disease has become so endemic that there can be a lynching incident for the silliest of reasons. In a recent such case in western UP’s Hapur district, two Muslim men were at the receiving end of mob frenzy reportedly following a road rage case. But a new video of the incident shows the victims being forced to admit their guilt of cow slaughter. Heart-rending scenes of one of the victims pleading for mercy even as the crowd drags him on the road, piloted by a policeman, must shock national conscience. Earlier this month, we had a most unfortunate incident in which two friends, who had gone to record the sound of nature, were lynched as the mob took them for child-lifters. There is so much distrust in society that any stranger is viewed with suspicion and treated as a potential offender. A most disturbing aspect of these lynching incidents is that most of the victims are either Muslims or Dalits, which indicates a deepening schism in society. This eats into the very vitals of our nationhood. Cow vigilantes are going about their business as if no law is above them, not even God in whose name they perform such inhuman acts. Since most of these cases have occurred in states ruled by the BJP, it is but natural that the blame would go to the dispensation under Narendra Modi. After a long silence on the issue of cow vigilantism, the Prime Minister had expressed strongly against the abhorrent practice and had declared that it was the responsibility of the states to ensure that such incidents did not occur. But, despite all his assertions, murders are being committed in the name of the innocent cow and the marauders are going scot-free. As we have maintained, lynching incidents point to a breakdown of law and order and those in charge of maintaining public order must squarely face the blame. The excuse that members of the mob cannot be identified is most untenable. There are court-sanctioned procedures under which parties and designated officials are held responsible in cases of mobs causing damage to public property and the same principle must be applied to lynching and other crimes by frenzied mobs because these essentially stem from a failure to enforce public order.

The star of the forthcoming DC comic book film Aquaman clutched a black leather Saint Laurent handbag with a gold chain strap.

Bangkok : Diana Penty says as an actor her priority is to keep experimenting and avoid sticking to “formula films”. The actor, whose last release Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran did significantly well at the box office, says it is important for films to mint money at the ticket window but she would not compromise over content to be in a project which will “do well”. “Box office success definitely matters. I will be lying if I say it does not matter. At the end of the day, there is a lot of money that gets put into films.

Plus you want it to do good and don’t want it to lose any money. A lot of hard work goes into making a film.” “There are some films that you know will do well. Then there are others which have good stories that ought to be told. But because they are slightly risky, not everybody is willing to take that up. But I think it is important to take risks because at the end of the day, you want to explore new genres and new characters,” Diana said on the sidelines of IIFA 2018. The model-turnedactor, who made her Bollywood

debut in 2012 with Cocktail, has worked in Happy Bhag Jayegi (2016), Lucknow Central (2017) and Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran. She says the long gaps between her films were not “intentional” and she just waits for right scripts. “I am not intentionally taking long breaks so as to keep gaps between my films. It’s just that it takes a while to find the right kinds of roles and what you want to do next. I have always been careful about it and I don’t want to do something that I am not sure of. I take my time with it and be sure of a certain kind of films,” she said. Diana will be next seen in Happy Phir Bhag Jayegi, the sequel to her 2016 hit film, that also featured Abhay Deol, Jimmy Sheirgill and Ali Fazal. Sonakshi Sinha is the new entry into the franchise. “If you like the first one, you will also like the second one. It’s the same space. It is funny, crazy and sweet. It’s a joyride. It is funnier than the first one. It feels good that a film is good enough for the makers to consider a part two.

The win ensures India maintain their place at the top of the Champions Trophy. Both teams came into the contest on the back of wins on the opening, India over Pakistan and Argentina over Netherlands. There was little to separate the two teams in the first

quarter with defence being stretched on either ends. Stick check by Jarmanpreet Singh while tackling Matias Paredes saw India concede the first penalty corner. That count turned into three following Harmanpreet’s brave defending as an onrushing player. Eventually, Argentina failed to score and ended the first quarter in a stalemate. Two minutes into the second quarter, India scored the opener when a deliberate foul by Maico Casella while tackling Harmanpreet Singh fetched India their first PC. Virat Kohli panicked while preparing for England tour, says Sourav Ganguly

New Delhi : A tough tour of England four years ago made Virat Kohli panicky while preparing for the upcoming series but former India captain Sourav Ganguly is happy that the star cricketer did not end up playing county cricket in his eagerness to be well-prepared.“Kohli is a fantastic player. He will do well this time. I am happy that he did not play county cricket before the England series. I think he was eager to play county (ahead of the series) because he was panicky after not having a good tour last time around. He is too good a player to miss out this time,” Ganguly told PTI. Kohli’s

much-hyped stint at Surrey was eventually ruled out after he suffered a neck injury. Before departing to England earlier this week, the Indian skipper felt not playing county could be a blessing in disguise as a break from the game has refreshed him completely. He has also moved on from what happened in England four years ago when he could only muster 134 runs in 10 Test innings at 13.40. Kohli has been supremely successful in South Africa and Australia, making England a territory to conquer. Ganguly thinks both captain and the team will do well in the five Test series.

WhatsApp testing its payment services in India ahead of launch

New Delhi: WhatsApp, which is testing its payments services in India, on Saturday said it is updating its terms of service and privacy policy to “reflect the addition of payment interoperability features” ahead of the full-fledged launch of the service. Almost one million people are “testing” WhatsApp’s payments service in India, which is the largest base for the Facebookowned company that has over 1.5 billion users globally. WhatsApp has over 200 million users in India.

“We’ll be updating our WhatsApp payments Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to provide simpler language on how the payments feature operates. It also reflects the addition of payment interoperability features we’ve added since the beta started,” a WhatsApp spokesperson told PTI. The spokesperson added that the company has worked closely with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), bank partners, and the Indian government on these details of how its service works.

WhatsApp had received permission from NPCI to tie up with banks to facilitate financial transactions via Unified Payments Interface (UPI). “We still do not have a launch date but this terms and policy update bring us one step closer to full launch,” the spokesperson said but declined to comment on the launch date of the service. The terms state that WhatsApp collects information “when you send, receive, or request a payment, including the date and time and reference transaction number”.

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi targets European market

Hong Kong: Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi will aggressively target European markets, using part of the proceeds from its initial public offering worth USD 6.1 billion in Hong Kong, the company’s co-founder said on Saturday. The company is offering 2.18 billion shares at HK dollar 17-HK dollar 22 apiece, in a bid to raise USD 6.1 billion, far less than the USD 10 billion originally expected, as an escalating trade war between China and the US dampens investor sentiment. But at a press conference in Hong Kong on Saturday, the company’s co-founders were bullish about its prospects, signalling plans for international expansion in Europe and Southeast Asia. “Someone asked me if Xiaomi (will) only expand in developing countries? Last year we started to enter the European market and we realised we have a lot of ‘Mi fans’ in Europe,” Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s cofounder and CEO said. The company will invest around HKD 8.3 billion from its IPO proceeds towards boosting its

presence in overseas markets including Spain, Russia and Indonesia. The firm, which mainly sells cheap but highquality smartphones in China, has been looking to push into Europe -recently opening its first flagship store in Paris -- as the home market reaches saturation point.“We are planning for the US market and will find a proper timing to enter it,” Wang Chuan, co-founder and senior vice president of Xiaomi, said on Saturday. “Xiaomi is very optimistic about the development of China-US trade, as every economic entity is relying on each other,” Wang added. Founded in 2010 by entrepreneur Lei, Beijing-based Xiaomi has grown from a startup in Zhongguancun -- China’s “Silicon Valley” -- to the world’s fourth biggest smartphone vendor at the end of last year according to International Data Corp (IDC). The company shipped 28 million smartphones worldwide from January to March, an 88-percent surge yearon-year.

Vadodara student murder: Accused wanted to ‘defame school’, say police Vadodara : The teenager apprehended for allegedly killing a junior student at a school here last week has told investigators that he committed the grisly act to defame the educational institute, the police said Sunday. The Class 10 student did not know the victim, who was a year junior to him and who had taken admission in the school in Baranpora area only a week ago, a police officer involved in the probe said. The police today took the 17-year-old accused, held in Valsad on Friday night, to his home in Vadodara and other places he visited after allegedly committing the crime. They recovered the clothes he was wearing at the time of the crime, sources said. Later he was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. “The board sent him to an observation home,” Assistant Commissioner of Police S G Patil said. The board also appointed an independent welfare officer, as provided under the law, to monitor investigation and questioning of the accused. This officer will remain present during questioning and also when the police take him outside the observation home for investigation. The body of the 14-year-old boy, a Class 9 student, was found with multiple stab wounds in the washroom of the school on June 22. The killing was a grim reminder of the murder of a seven-yearold student in Gurgaon last year. Police zeroed in on the accused from the CCTV camera footage, which allegedly shows the accused and the victim walking up to the first floor and entering the washroom. A police official said the accused revealed during questioning that he committed the crime because he wanted to “defame” the school after being scolded by teachers three days before the incident for passing off someone else’s homework as his own.

Earlier admission to MBBS course no bar AHMEDABAD: The decks have now been cleared for two students, who dropped out of the MBBS course last year, because of a fee increase, to get admission to medical courses in the new academic year, as the state government told Gujarat high court that it has changed the rules. With the state government’s green signal, Justice S H Vora disposed of the petition filed by the students seeking directions to the state government to consider them for admission for the academic year 2018-19. According to the case details, Badal Bamroliya and Jay Chothani secured admission to the first year of the MBBS course

at Vadodara’s Parul University. They agreed to pay fee of Rs 11 lakh for a seat in the management quota. After the admission process was over, the institute got permission from the Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC) to increase its fees and the amount was doubled to Rs 22 lakh. Both students requested for cancellation of their admission on the ground that they were unable to pay the higher fees. Both students took the NEET again in 2018. The authorities refused to consider their case for admission in 2018-19, as the rule that existed then stipulated that once a student secured admission in an MBBS course, he couldn’t get admission for the next five years.
