Maharashtra Bandh Today, Maratha Kranti Morcha Highlights: Maratha outfits have called for a state-wide bandh in Maharashtra following the death of a 27-year-old man while demanding for reservations for his community

UPA consulted BJP leaders on Andhra special status, expected my successor to fulfill promise: Manmohan Singh New Delhi: Former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday told Rajya Sabha that he expected his successor (PM Modi) to fulfill the UPA government’s commitment on special category status to Andhra Pradesh. In his brief statement in the upper house of Parliament, Singh said that it was a promise made to the southern Indian state by the previous government, after consulting BJP leaders. “Mr Chairman Sir, on 20th February 2014, when the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill 2014 was being discussed, I made a solemn commitment on the floor of this August House as Prime Minister of India and I quote ‘For purposes of central assistance, special category status will be extended to the successor state of Andhra Pradesh’.” The former PM was addressing the Rajya Sabha during a debate on Andhra Pradesh. He said he had made a “solemn commitment” (special category status

to Andhra Pradesh) on the floor of the House as Prime Minister of India on February 20, 2014. The assurance on special category status to the “successor state” of Andhra Pradesh was given after discussing the issue with Arun Jaitley, the then leader of the opposition, and other senior BJP leaders, Singh said. “…This had been decided in view of the fact that revenues collected in Hyderabad will accrue entirely to the new state of Telangana. This commitment of special category status to the successor state of Andhra Pradesh had been discussed with Shri Arun Jaitley, then Leader of the Opposition and other senior BJP leaders,” he added.

Twitter Laughs at Modi’s Promise of 200 Cows to Beef-Eating Rwanda

New Delhi : Cows have made it to the headlines again, but this time around for being presented as a gift by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi, who is currently visiting Rwanda as part of a three-nation tour to Africa, has promised to gift 200 locallysourced cows to a village in the country. The cows will be gifted under the “Girinka scheme”, which is a centuries-old cultural practice in Rwanda whereby a cow is given

by one person to another, as a sign of respect and gratitude. Fun fact: Rwanda consumes beef regularly, while in India, certain states have banned its consumption. So, coming at a time when incidents of beef-related mob lynching have been in the news in his own country, the irony of Modi’s gesture wasn’t lost on twitterati. “Under ‘Girinka’, a social protection scheme of the Rwandan government personally overseen by

President Paul Kagame, poorest families are gifted dairy cows by the government and the first female calf born to the cow is gifted to the neighbour, thus promoting brotherhood and solidarity”, TS Tirumurti, secretary (economic relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs explained. Modi will attend the 10th edition of the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa from the 25 to 27 July, during which the leaders are expected

PNB fraud: Fugitive Mehul Choksi has moved to Antigua, taken local passport, say officials

New Delhi: Absconding diamantaire Mehul Choksi has moved to Antigua from the US and taken the passport of the Caribbean country, PTI quoted government sources as saying. In response to diffusion notice issued by Interpol, the Enforcement Directorate has been informed by Antiguan authorities that Choksi arrived there this month and had taken the passport of that country, they said. Choksi had fled the country in the first week of January, nearly weeks before the alleged fraud surfaced at the Punjab National bank to the tune of Rs 13,400 crore. Uncle of his alleged partner in crime, Nirav Modi, Choksi was booked by CBI in two

cases related to the scam and filed a charge sheet against him. In Mumbai, a special court has issued a NonBailable Warrant (NBW) against Choksi, following which the CBI moved the Interpol for the issuance of Red Corner Notice against the Gitanjali group promoter but it is still under process. On this basis, request for Red Corner Notice was moved in June. While RCN has been issued against Nirav Modi by the Interpol, the request for such a notice against

Choksi is pending with the Lyon-based international police cooperation agency, they said. If an RCN is issued against a person then it means that the member countries of the Lyon-based international police cooperation agency has the authority can arrest and extradite him/her. The CBI, in its charge sheets filed on May 14, had alleged that Nirav Modi, through his companies, siphoned off funds to the tune of Rs 6,498.20 crore using fraudulent LoUs issued from PNB’s Brady House branch in Mumbai. Choksi allegedly swindled Rs 7080.86 crore, making it possibly the biggest banking scam in the country, it had alleged.

Sabarimala row: There are temples where men are not allowed, board tells Supreme Court

added that a court cannot be invited to give a finding that a tradition or belief is not of antiquity without the evidence being examined in a trial New Delhi : Defending the Sabarimala tradition in the Supreme Court, advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Tuesday told the bench that there are temples in the country where even men are not allwoed. He added that a court cannot be invited to give a finding that a tradition or belief is not of antiquity without the evidence being examined in a trial. Arguing for the Travancore Devasom Board which administer the sabarimala temple, Singhvi also argued that there are hundreds of traditions practised buy dozens of faiths in India and it is not possible to bring them all under definition of Constitutional morality. “Even in Mosques across the country, women are not allowed,” said Sighvi. He added that the test under articles 25 and 26 was not whether a particular practice was right or wrong but whether it was a bonafide belief practiced for centuries by a community. To this Justice R F Nariman observed that no one had said in any affidavit that the they were not being allowed to enter

Lynchings will not stop unless cow gets status of ‘Rashtra Mata’: BJP MLA

New Delhi : The “war for gau raksha” (cow protection) and incident of lynchings will not stop till the time cow receives the status of “Rashtra Mata” (Mother of the Nation), a BJP MLA from Telangana T Raja Singh Lodh said on Sunday in a video message posted on a social networking website. Known for

his controversial remarks, Singh urged MPs to demand this in Parliament and said that he does not want “khoon-kharaba” (bloodletting) on the issue. “Till cow is not accorded the status of ‘Rashtra Mata’, I feel the war for ‘gau raksha’ will not stop even if ‘gau rakshaks’ (cow protectors) are put

into jails or bullets are fired at them,” Singh said. Seeking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support, Singh expressed that violence over cow protection will

not stop until a ministry of cow protection is created in every state and stringent laws are enacted for gau raksha. In a 7-minute clip, Singh claimed that media rakes up the issue when a cow smuggler is killed, however, incidents of cow protection activists being killed by cattle smugglers are ignored by media. “Same day

when Rakbar Khan was allegedly lynched, Kheta Ram Bheel a Dalit was also Lynched in Rajasthan by the Muslim family of the girl he loved. BUT MEDIA & other secular parties are not interested as all the accused are from Peaceful community which doesn’t suit their agenda,” he wrote on Twitter.

because of impurity. Arguing further, Singhvi said in these cases, original reason was not gender. Justice Nariman replied to this by saying “if petetioner’s say it violates their fundamental rights, burden is on you to disprove”. Last week, hearing the contentious issue relating to the ban on entry of women between 10 and 50 years of age in Kerala’s historic Sabarimala temple, the Supreme Court had observed that a woman’s right to pray is equal to that of a man and it should not be dependent on law. The court had observed that “what applies to a man applies to a woman” as well and said that a “woman’s right to pray was not dependent on any law but it is a Constitutional right”. Several women activists have opposed the ban on the entry of women inside the temple. The Kerala government, however, given support to the women’s cause saying it in favour of their entry inside the temple.

Rafale deal is not the real issue, defence planning is issue

The last time India had a government with a single party majority in the Lok Sabha, it was ousted on the back of a formidable political campaign that centred around a defence deal. The leader of the Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, is looking for another defence deal that could provide an opening for his ascent to power in 2019. Gandhi wants to exploit the Narendra Modi government’s Rafale deal the way V.P. Singh milked the Bofors deal in 1989. During Friday’s noconfidence motion in Parliament, Gandhi raked up the Rafale deal once again. His allegations against the government are three-fold: a) large-scale cost inflation in the deal after the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government demitted office; b) nonexistence of a secrecy pact between the governments of India and France as the defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman has been claiming; and c) cronyism in awarding the offset contracts under the deal. It is time to look at these charges one by one. The charge of a disproportionate cost inflation of the deal is bogus. The UPA government had not arrived at any final price. The number that goes around—roughly ₹5.2 billion per plane—and the one that Gandhi quoted was the price of the basic hardware without the weapons package and other India-specific additions. The government has claimed that if the in-built cost escalation formula and the exchange rate variations over time are factored in, the deal negotiated in 2016 is much better. One can probably find flaws with the government’s argument, but definitely the gap between the price of a bare-bone Rafale in 2007 and 2016 is not enough to make half a compelling case for a scam. The fact that there exists a secrecy pact between the two governments was confirmed by both the governments in New Delhi as well as Paris. And Sitharaman clarified that the pact was signed in 2008— during the tenure of the UPA government. Gandhi’s claim that French President Emmanuel Macron himself informed him of the absence of any such secrecy pact falls flat on the face. Gandhi could have asked whether commercial details of the purchase fall within the ambit of the secrecy pact. We do not know but can make an educated guess. It is obvious that protecting the price-related information is a bigger concern for Dassault Aviation—manufacture of Rafale aircraft—than it is for the Indian government. Rafale is a product in a very competitive market. Besides, discriminatory pricing is a norm in the defence market. Why should India, though, agree to keep the price breakdown secret in order to benefit Dassault? The answer could lie in the prospective use of 36 Rafales India has purchased. The 2007 MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) tender involved 126 aircraft (18 to be purchased in flyaway condition and 108 of them to be built in India). In 2015, the government decided to scrap the MMRCA tender and buy 36 Rafales in flyaway condition in a direct government-to-government agreement.

Hollywood - Bollywood Pakistani Actress Saba Qamar

Colleagues Defend Her After She's Trolled For Smoking In Pic

Mumbai: Pakistani actress Saba Qamar recently became subjected to ruthless trolling after the brutal section of the Internet chanced upon certain behind-the-scene photos and videos of her. “Shameful,” she was told in comments on the viral photos (which appear to be screenshots from a video), in which she can be seen smoking while dressing up for what appears to be a shoot on sets. Saba Qamar’s colleague Pakistani star Mahira Khan, who was once trolled for photos which showed her smoking and wearing a short dress, was also invoked: “Saba Qamar has also begun following Mahira Khan. Is she even Muslim anymore?” read a comment. While a stony silence has been maintained by Saba Qamar after days of trolling, the need to incinerate haters has been strongly felt by some of her colleagues, namely Osman Khalid Butt, Adnan Siddiqui and Aijaz Aslam. Saba Qamar, who has several films and over 20 TV shows on her resume, is said to be amongst Pakistan’s highest-paid actress. She made her Bollywood debut with 2017’s Hindi Medium, also starring Irrfan Khan. Osman Khalid, who shared screen-space with the actress in TV drama Baaghi, wrote a lengthy Instagram post, condemning the circulation of the on-set photos and the subsequent trolling. “For the love of God, stop looking for every excuse to drag your icons down... Stop sharing these images/videos and stop commenting on them. If you want to speak out, speak out against the jahalat of whoever did this just for social media infamy,” read a part of his Instagram post.

Tiger Shroff buys 8-bedroom house worth crores, to move in next year

Kangana Ranaut is a vision in white as she poses with Adiyogi under a stormy sky Mumbai : Kangana Ranaut is a fitness freak and a yoga enthusiast. Her many videos on Instagram and interviews prove as much. Looks like she is getting deeper into other, more deeper, aspects of yoga. Late on Monday, she posted a picture of herself with the majestic Shiva statue at the Coimbatore headquarter of the Isha Foundation. Dressed in a cream-coloured sari with a sleeveless blouse and with minimal makeup, she stands in a black-and-white contrast with the statue in the background. The grey monsoon clouds in the sky above add to the drama. Sharing the post, her team wrote: “And time stood still! #KanganaRanaut soaking in the divinity and seeking the blessings of the almighty at #Adiyogi @isha.foundation @sadhguru.” Her team, which handles her Instagram page, of course can’t help admiring Kangana. In one of the posts, she is described as a ‘symbol of purity’ and a ‘vision of oomph’. It isn’t clear what is the purpose of her visit. On the work, Kangana has her hands full. In mid July, she returned from the London shoot of her upcoming film, Mental Hai Kya, where she stars with Rajkummar Rao. She is also preparing for the release of her other film, Manikarnika, a historical drama of Rani Laxmibai, the brave queen of Jhansi, who died fighting the British, during the 1857 First Battle of Indian Independence. However, it is her quirky look from Mental Hai Kya that has caught the fancy of many.

Mumbai : It seems Bollywood stars are on a real estate buying spree. If we recently heard of Shahid Kapoor buying a duplex apartment worth Rs 56 crore in Worli, Mumbai, now Student of the Year 2 actor Tiger Shroff has acquired a posh eight-bedroom house in upscale Khar, according to reports. Tiger is getting the house decorated by John Abraham’s brother Alan and is expected to move in next year. A Mumbai Mirror report said that the deal for the house

was finalized earlier this month and it met all Tiger’s requirements. A source is quoted as saying in the report, “Tiger had been hunting for an ideal property for a while now and was really excited when he came across this one. The deal came through earlier this month and his family is extremely happy about Tiger’s latest investment. John Abraham’s interior designer brother Alan will be decorating the place as Tiger had really liked his work in John’s house.

Mumbai : Aashiq Banaya Aapne actor Tanushree Dutta has returned to India after two long years. The 34-yearold actor was spotted at the Mumbai airport on Sunday evening. As she exited the airport, the former Miss India Universe happily posed

for the shutterbugs. Tanushree has been living in the US for the last two years. During her stay in the foreign land, the actor remained in touch with her fans through her social media account. Tanushree was last seen on the silver screen in 2010.

Karishma Tanna agreed to do a guest appearance in Sanju only for Rajkumar Hirani Mumbai : Shilpa Shetty Kundra’s style quotient certainly seems to be on a rise. The actressturned-entrepreneur, who has never missed an opportunity to give fashion goals, took the Internet by storm after she shared a few pictures of her latest outing in a Manish Malhotra ensemble. Shilpa, who has never shied away from expressing her love for sarees and adding a touch of glamour to them by giving it her own stylish twist, turned up for an event recently, dressed in a plain lemon drape saree that featured little tassel detail, from the atelier of one of the most loved

designers of B-town, Manish. The actress teamed her outfit with a pearl encrusted bustier blouse and a waist belt that highlighted her curves to perfection. Shilpa accessorised her look with a statement necklace, bracelet and rings. She left her tresses open in waves to round off her look. Earlier, Shilpa slayed it in a tangerine number from Peace + Love. Shilpa looked impressive in the attire -- an off-the-shoulder top, matching pants which she teamed with an animal print belt. Soft wavy hair, nude makeup and a sleek neck piece rounded off her look. Take a look.

Mumbai : Actor Karishma Tanna is in a happy space — her latest film, Sanju, has got a magnificent response at the box office, and despite having only a guest appearance, she’s feeling quite part of the team and a contributor to this success. She also features in two songs in the film that have been released separately. A thrilled Karishma says, “Just the feeling of being a part of [filmmaker] Raju Hirani’s camp gives you a high. And I did [the film] only because of that. Also, sharing screen space with Vicky [Kaushal] and Ranbir [Kapoor] in that one scene, as an actor, you get to learn a lot. So, it was a brilliant setup and I have no regrets that I did it.” Had she been asked by another banner or filmmaker, she “wouldn’t have agreed to do a guest appearance”, says the actor, who has long been a popular face on television. Not for a moment, she adds, was there a feeling that her role in Sanju was insignificant in the storyline. Karishma says, “If you see, everyone had a guest appearance in the film, except Ranbir and Vicky, so I didn’t feel that I had a less important role. And it was a biopic on Sanjay Dutt, so people would come and go [in the plot]. It had an ensemble cast and not a one hero-heroine film.” She recalls how the first conversation with Hirani convinced her to say yes. In the film, she plays the girlfriend of Vicky’s character but then has a fling with Sanju (played by Ranbir). “When I had first gone to meet Raju sir, he told me that it’s a special appearance, not a meaty role, but he also said that it wouldn’t be as if the character just came and went.

Spot Fixing Allegations in Al Jazeera Documentary “Devastating” Says Glenn Maxwell

India vs England: Rishabh Pant Feels Tackling the Swinging Duke Ball Will Hold Key for Visitors

Australia's Glenn Maxwell raises his bat and helmet to celebrate scoring a century during the second day of the Ranchi Test New Delhi : Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell has said that he is “shocked” and “hurt” by the allegations of spot fixing that were made in an Al Jazeera documentary about corruption. The documentary, which investigates the Tests between Australia and India in Ranchi (March 2017) and England and India in Chennai (December 2016) shows Indian national Aneel Munawar who is said to work for the crime syndicate D-Company naming

two Australian players and three England players who were a part of the fixing. Allegedly, the fixers instructed the players to score runs at a run-rate lower than what the illegal betting market was placing bets on during certain periods of the game. However, Maxwell, who scored his maiden Test century in the match in question responded to the allegations in an interview to an Australian radio station SEN, saying he was “devastated.”

New Delhi : Days after earning a callup to the India squad for the Test series in England, wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has described it as a “dream come true.” “It was a great feeling to be included in the Indian Test squad,” the 20year old told BCCI.tv. “I always wanted to be a part of the Indian Test squad and it was more like a dream come true for me. It was an amazing feeling, not only for me but also for my family and my coach Tarek Sinha sir, who helped me understand the game very early in my life. He has always wanted me to play Test cricket.”

Pant has made quite a reputation for himself in the limited overs formats and has come to be known for his big hitting ability. He does have a pretty good first class record though and believes the transition isn’t that hard to make. “There isn’t too much difference, it’s mainly got more to do with shot selection,” he explained. “In red ball cricket, with the field placements, you can look around; take your time, because you have five days to play. Whereas in limited overs cricket you have limited number of balls to play and score. I have so far enjoyed my preparation with red ball cricket.

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is known for his calm and composed demeanour on the field. Be it big run chases or any crunch situation, MS Dhoni has an ‘ice-cool’ attitude which has turned the tables in India’s favour on many occasions. That’s why Dhoni earned the tag of ‘Captain Cool’ from his team-mates and others. Bollywood singer Rahul Vaidya, who rose to fame with his superb performances in Indian Idol, shared a

video with Dhoni in a bathroom. Dhoni and Vaidya on Saturday attended the wedding ceremony of politician Praful Patel’s daughter Poorna Patel. In the video uploaded by Vaidya, the singer can be heard asking Dhoni, “Why are you so cool even in a bathroom?” Dhoni, who announced his retirement from Tests in 2014, has played 321 ODIs and 93 T20Is. In 321 ODIs, Dhoni has scored 10046 runs at an average of 51.25. He has 10 centuries and 67 fifties to his name.

Classy Ramkumar Ramanathan needs consistency to join the elite New Delhi : Ramanathan Kumarappan and his wife Alagammai haven’t slept well in two weeks. With a smidgen of guilt, they will tell you that tournaments in the US, which go well past their bedtime in Chennai, lie at the heart of their current phase of insomnia. But for son Ramkumar, currently India’s second highest-ranked singles player, they’re willing to brave groggy mornings, even if it’s just to bury the despair of his close defeats during

the phone calls that follow. On Sunday night, they had an extra rush for forgoing sleep: Ramkumar was chasing history. Until the eve of his semi-finals in Newport though, the 23-yearold had no idea of the heft of a win or final appearance. He was only three when Leander Paes became India’s last singles tour titlist in 1998. In a tournament ruled by upsets -- with just two seeded players advancing to the quarter-finals -- there was hope that the 161-ranked, big-serving

Ramkumar, who’d dropped just one set all week on his way to the Hall of Fame Open final, would match Leander’s feat. Under wet conditions in Newport against world no.48 Steve Johnson, he managed to win 75 per cent of his first-serve points against the American’s 83 per cent. He lost in three sets but still made history, becoming the first Indian singles player since Somdev Devvarman in 2011 to enter the final of an ATP event. “It was a really close

match,” Ramkumar tells ESPN. “He (Johnson) played well and I had some chances but I didn’t take them. He started the third set well and kept it going but I’ll just have to take the positives from this and move on.” He was also rewarded with a 46spot jump to be placed no. 115 in the latest rankings. “I think it’s pretty exciting what Ram has achieved,” Somdev tells ESPN. “Rhode Island has been pretty good for Indian players historically.

Business Over 20 Indian banks sign pact for faster bad-loan resolution

Mumbai: More than 20 Indian lenders on Monday signed a pact aimed at faster resolution of bad loans, officials said, while more could join by the end of the week in what is the latest bid to cut record levels of soured assets in Asia’s third-biggest economy. A governmentappointed panel this month proposed the so-called inter-creditor agreement among other measures after criticism that at times smaller lenders in a lending consortium were creating roadblocks for speedier resolution. The agreement gives a bigger say to the lead lender in a consortium and allows a resolution plan to be approved if 66% of the banks in the group agree to it. Dissenting lenders have the option to sell their stressed loans to a company at a discount, or buy out loans to that entity from all other lenders at a premium. “The objective is to use this inter-creditor agreement for faster facilitation of the stressed assets resolution,” said Sunil Mehta, the nonexecutive chairman of second-biggest state-run lender Punjab National Bank, who also headed the panel. “One of the major issues was consensus among lending banks on what should have been a common resolution plan.” Top lender State Bank of India was among banks which signed the agreement.

End to Reliance Jio’s price war may be 185 million users away

Mumbai: The bruising telecommunications price war unleashed by the entry of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd into the sector may continue for at least a year or as long as it takes Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. to nearly double its user base. Reliance Jio “will strive to double subscribers to 400 million before raising prices,” Kunal Agrawal, a Hong Kong-based analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence said in an emailed response to questions. “We expect cut-throat pricing and weak average revenue per user to continue over the next oneto-two years, possibly increasing balance sheet leverage for other domestic telecom incumbents.” Reliance Jio, which stormed the sector with free calls and data forcing rivals to merge or exit as revenues declined, has amassed 215 million subscribers since its 2016 launch. Agrawal estimates the company will now aim for a dominant market share after turning the industry into an oligopoly and as India’s mobile users inch up to 1.2 billion over two to three years, from 1.13 billion currently. Reliance Jio market share surged to 18.2% in May from about 10% a year earlier, according to regulatory data compiled by Bloomberg.

Mumbai: Market at Close: Continuing its bullish momentum from Monday, led by gains in midcaps, the market end the day on a strong note. The Sensex and Nifty managed to close at a record high. Mistakes To Avoid While Filing Your Income Tax Return

Mumbai: In 2010, the government declared July 24 as the National Income Tax Day. This is just six days before July 31, which is the last date for filing an income tax return (ITR). It is mandatory for anybody earning an annual income of more than Rs. 2,50,000 to file an ITR. On an average, an urban professional falls under the tax bracket right from the beginning of his or her career. Taxes and returns are a critical part of responsible financial management, and, hence, it is imperative to file a tax return before the due date. How does an ITR help? Filing an ITR legitimises one’s earnings, and in case of excess tax paid to the government, one can always claim a refund. Even though it is not compulsory to file a return if the total income is below taxable limit, it is beneficial to do so. An ITR is the best document of proof of income. The process also makes one eligible for loans, since the ITR of the three years gone is what banks require to judge the payback capacity of the loan seeker. Absence of an ITR can also reduce the chances of getting a visa to travel abroad. ITR also becomes imperative to obtain a high life cover insurance policy or high-limit credit card. With just about a week to go before the last date, it is best to file the return timely to avoid tax troubles. Technical jargon and excessive paperwork can make filing an ITR seem tedious, but this is now easier than ever before and merely a few clicks away. To begin with, you need to have a few documents in place - PAN card, bank account details, Form 16, Form 26AS and proof of investments, which are useful for tax filing. All one needs to do is register on and follow guidelines. After filing ITR successfully, any excess tax paid will be credited to the bank account in approximately three to four months.

Gujarat seeks Rs 9000 crore compensation for prohibition

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government on Monday sought a special compensation to the tune of Rs 9000 crore, which the State had lost owing to prohibition in the State. The demand was placed before the 15th Finance Commission, which was on a three-day visit to the State. In its presentation before the Finance Commission Chairman and NK Singh and other members, the State Government had stressed that the State had lost approximately Rs 9864 crore per year

in excise owing to the prohibition policy. “We have brought it to the notice of the Finance Commission that the state loses considerable amount and that should be factored in,” Gujarat Chief Secretary Dr J N Singh told The Hindu. Earlier during the presentation, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had urged the commission to encourage the policy of prohibition as adopted by the State by giving some incentive considering its positive externalities and

social benefits. “The prohibition as a policy offers social benefits in terms of better law and order,” a State official said. The State had also demanded a special grant on the ground that it was a border State, shared land and sea border with Pakistan. The State wants special grant for infrastructure development in the border districts Kutch, Banaskantha and Patan. The commission chairman Mr Singh praised Gujarat’s rapid progress on industrial development and

also noted increasing expenditure on health and education, both human development sectors in which the State was found to be lagging behind. “Recently, Gujarat is improving its expenditure in health and education – areas which deserve fuller attention over the coming years,” Mr Singh said while talking to media persons after meeting Mr. Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM and Finance Minister Nitin Patel and top officials including Dr J.N Singh. While lauding the

Gujarat government’s efforts in pushing economic growth in the State, the commission also underlinedthat the Goods and Services Tax (GST) would be a primary challenge in coming years. “One of big challenges Gujarat is facing is GST collections. Once the 14% guarantee as GST compensation by the Centre winds up, Gujarat will need to look at the GST collection projections seriously and tax buoyancy may become an issue,” Mr Singh added.

Enhance state allocation to 52%: Gujarat Congress

Gandhinagar : Citing states’ liabilities and functions, the Opposition Congress asked the 15th Finance Commission to enhance states’ share of central taxes to 52% from the existing 42%. The states’ share of the central taxes kitty was 32% before the 14th Finance Commission. A delegation of state Congress leaders met the Commission members and submitted a memorandum elaborating on reasons for seeking higher share for states. Led by former IAS officer PK Valera, MLA Anil Joshiyara and party spokesperson Kailash Gadhvi, the Congress also sought more funds for Gujarat for education, health and other areas. “Gujarat needs more funds (special package) for providing quality education at school and college level. The state has left healthcare services at the mercy of private sector, and more funds are needed for the state to have its own institutions that provide healthcare at affordable rates,” the party said. The Opposition also made a case for special funds for Gujarat for SC & ST welfare, farmers, strengthening the justice delivery system.

and forgery, among others. The summons, issued by DCP Leena Patil — heading the investigation into the case — directs the former lawmaker to immediately present himself before the Sarthana

police. It was sent at Bhanushali’s residence in Ahmedabad. The former MLA is required to appear before the police so that his statement is recorded and medical examination conducted as part of the investigation, police said. Bhanushali represented the Abdasa assembly segment in Kutch district from 2007 to 2012. In the wake of the allegations, the 53-year-old leader had to step down from the post of Gujarat BJP vice-president. He had then described the allegations as baseless and said they were

aimed at finishing his political career. The former MLA had also said he will not take up any post till his name is cleared in the case. In her complaint, the woman has alleged that the accused raped her on several occasions between November 2017 and March 2018 on the promise of getting her admitted in a reputed fashion design institute. The first sexual assault was allegedly taped by one of Bhanushali’s assistants and he raped her on several occasions by threatening to circulate the video, she alleged.

Gujarat: 75 MBA, MCA colleges score a duck in Round 1

Ahmedabad : Nearly 75 MBA and MCA colleges in the state have not got a single student after round 1 of admissions conducted by the Admissions Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC). Shockingly, 77% of the total 18070 seats have remained vacant, with hardly 25 colleges been able to fill up 100% of their seats. Out of the total of 18070 seats nearly 13985 seats have remained vacant including 5072 for MBA, 3655 for MCA and 5258 seats for MCA lateral. For MBA, while 20 colleges

have got zero students, 7 colleges have got only 1 seat filled whereas only 8 colleges have got 2 students. More than 50 MBA colleges have recorded less than 30% of seats being filled after round 1. Experts say that round 2 will also not make a lot of difference as very few students appeared for the Common Management Aptitude Test (CMAT) this year. ”This year, the number of filled seats have witnessed a drop with nearly 600 seats as against last year. Even if after the second round, the scenario does not change much, then we keep two options open. Colleges can then consider students who have given CMAT exam but not filled the form or those who have not appeared for CMAT exam nor filled the form,

on their own merits,” GP Vadodaria, member secretary, ACPC said. “These days, students are not taking CMAT exam seriously. The situation is bad after round 1 because very less number of students appear for CMAT exams. The reason is that they know that since many colleges would have vacant seats, they would admit students without a CMAT score. But they fail to understand that CMAT is needed to get admission into a good college. The situation will not improve until and unless the government makes CMAT mandatory to get admission for MBA and MCA,” sources said. Colleges which are unable to get students will eventually admit them under management quota for their survival.

New Delhi : Alwar lynching victim Rakbar Khan died of “shock” due to his injuries, news said quoted his post-mortem report as saying. Rakbar, who was in his thirties, died after suspected cow vigilantes assaulted him at Alwar’s Lalavandi village on Saturday morning. State home minister Gulab Chand Kataria and chief secretary DB Gupta will also visit Lalavandi. A four-member panel appointed to probe the circumstances surrounding his death has admitted that there were lapses on the part of the police. “At the preliminary stage, we have found that there was some error in judgment. There was a time lapse of three hours, and the incident could have been avoided if the police had responded more efficiently,” said inspector general of police (law and order) NRK Reddy, who heads the probe committee. The police have been accused of further beating Rakbar after the assault and squandering over three hours in having tea and shuttling the cows to a bovine shelter before finally admitting him to a hospital. Two men can be heard telling the girl, “Just the two of us.” The girl can be heard pleading with the men to not do

anything to her. She tells them that she knows only the boy who offered her the lift. “There were six boys. Some were assaulting my friend, the others were trying to drag me away. I have seen one of the boys earlier. I think they would have eventually sexually assaulted me. But I was screaming, so perhaps that stopped them. One of the boys said there will be a panchayat,” the 16-year-old said, narrating her ordeal.
