RSS’ idea similar to Islamist group Muslim Brotherhood, says Rahul in UK London: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday likened the RSS to the Islamist group Muslim Brotherhood in the Arab world and alleged that the outfit is trying to “change” the nature of India and “capture” its institutions. The Muslim Brotherhood is the oldest political Islamist group in the Arab world. It is not allowed to operate as an official political party in some Arab countries. Addressing the International Institute of Strategic Studies here, Gandhi accused the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) of trying to change the nature of India and capture India’s institutions. “The RSS is trying to change the nature of India. Other parties haven’t tried to capture India’s institutions. The RSS’ idea is similar to the idea of Muslim Brotherhood in the Arab world,”

Chinese still in Doklam, PM Modi could’ve stopped it: Rahul Gandhi

Gandhi told the audience at the London-based think-tank. He also criticised the demonetisation of the Modi government banning the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes. The demonetisation was announced on November 8, 2016. “The idea of demonetisation came directly from the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS),

bypassed the Finance Minister and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and was planted in Prime Minister’s head,” the Congress president said. Modi had claimed that the demonetisation would help curtail the shadow economy and crack down on the use of illicit and counterfeit cash to fund illegal activity and terrorism.

London: Congress president Rahul Gandhi today said the Doklam standoff with China was not an “isolated issue” but part of a “sequence of events” and if Prime Minister Narendra Modi was carefully watching the process, India could have stopped it. Addressing the International Institute of Strategic Studies here, Gandhi said that “Prime Minister is episodic. He views Doklam as an event”. “Doklam is not an isolated issue. It was a part of a sequence of events, it was a process. If he (PM Modi) was carefully watching the process, he could’ve stopped it,” Gandhi said at the London-based think-tank. He claimed that the “truth is the Chinese are still in Doklam today”. Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh told Rajya Sabha last month that there have been no new developments at the site of the face-off with China in Doklam and its vicinity, and status quo prevails in the area. “Since the disengagement of Indian and Chinese border personnel in the Doklam area on August 28, 2017, there have been no new developments at the face-off site and its vicinity.

New Delhi : Rejecting the petitions filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the CPM challenging the West Bengal Panchayat polls, the Supreme Court Friday said the challenge must be pursued through election petitions instead. All these uncontested seats were won unopposed by candidates of the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition parties had alleged that their candidates were obstructed from filing nomination papers. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud exercised its extraordinary power under Article 142 of the Constitution and held that the limitation period

of 30 days for filing the election petitions, which has expired, would now commence from the date of notification of panchayat poll results. “Whoever is aggrieved with the election results can file their petitions before the concerned court within 30 days.” The apex court also set aside a Calcutta High Court order allowing e-filing, through WhatsApp or e-mail, of nominations in the panchayat polls in the state.

Bollywood’s long road to crazy rich Indians

A film about two New York professors attending a wedding in Singapore is not exactly raw material for a successful opening weekend in the US—and eager anticipation in other parts of the world. The unexpected success at the box office is one thing. The initial viewer response to Crazy Rich Asians has also sparked off a lot of sociological commentary on the ways of the super-rich. Some of these issues also resonate in India. The story is as follows. Rachel Chu is an economics professor, whose boyfriend Nick Young teaches history at the same university. Rachel realizes that Nick comes from a fabulously rich family only when she accompanies him back to Singapore, his hometown, and gets sucked into the over-the-top lifestyle of the Asian elite. This is a far cry from the mystical East portrayed in films such as Eat Pray Love. James Crabtree of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore sees the new film as a parable on rising inequality in Asia. There are some lessons for us as well. The Indian film industry has had a shifting attitude towards wealth and, in fact, some broader themes in economic development. Think of the way the bus company is portrayed as the villain that has arrived to put honest buggy drivers out of business in the 1957 film, Naya Daur. And then there is the astonishing argument made a decade later in Upkar—that India suffers from food shortages because of farmers who have abandoned the land for the lure of cities. Both these arguments fly in the face of modern development, thinking about investing in modern technology as well as providing urban employment opportunities for those trying to escape the overpopulated agriculture sector. However, these two films reflected the neo-Gandhian cultural sensibility that was dominant in India at the time. It is no surprise that the businessman was inevitably portrayed in a negative light during these socialist decades, as an exploiter whom the hero takes on till the good side wins. Economist Nimish Adhia has shown in his careful content analysis over the decades that very few Hindi films in the 1950s and 1960s had businessmen as heroes. That changed in the next two decades, as businessmen began to be shown as men of integrity. In fact, Adhia has argued that the films of the latter decades helped build the legitimacy of wealth creation in the public mind, and thus made it easier for economic reformers to free enterprises from government control after 1991. Two films in the post-reforms era are particularly worthy of mention. The first is Dil Chahta Hai, which journalist Shekhar Gupta has argued is a landmark because it is perhaps the first Hindi film in which the main characters are comfortable with their wealth.

Let down by circumstances & his own blood, Harindra eventually retires to a life of complete obscurity and alienation. The literal title ‘emperor among

Asian Games 2018: Gymnast Dipa Karmakar leaves Jakarta empty-handed

SPORTS ROUNDUP

India to play friendly match against Sydney FC

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri will not shy away from rotating Cristiano Ronaldo

Jakarta: India’s star gymnast Dipa Karmakar left the Asian Games distraught on Friday, saying she had “a very bad feeling” as she left Jakarta empty handed. The 25-year-old -- one of just a handful of athletes to have the infamous ‘Vault of Death’ in her repertoire -- was among the favourites to take home a medal at the regional Olympics. But Karmakar failed on Friday to make it to the podium in the balance beam, finishing in fifth. That came after she was forced to pull out of the team final through injury and floundered in her favourite apparatus, the vault, missing out on qualification behind two of her teammates. “I had a very bad feeling after the podium (for the vault),” she told AFP. “I didn’t do my best.” Karmakar -- who last month bagged India’s first-ever gold medal in a global gymnastic event -- lost out to China’s Chen Yile, who won her third gold medal of the Games with a score of 14.600. Behind her came North

Korea’s Kim Su Jong on 13.400 and China’s Zhang Jin on 13.325. Elsewhere Hong Kong won its first gymnastics medal of the Asian Games when defending champion Shek Wai-hung bagged the gold on vault. Shek -- nicknamed Stone -- said he had felt “big, big pressure” as victory was the only way to stop his gymnastics club being kicked out of their training hall in Hong Kong. “Now I’ve got the medal I can stay,” he said, after totting up a score of 14.612. The 26-year-old made his name at London 2012 after becoming the first male gymnast from Hong Kong to compete at an Olympic Games. But he failed to progress beyond the first round and considered quitting the sport, saying at the time he had “wanted to die right there”. Shek’s score of 14.612 pushed South Korea’s Kim Han-sol into second with 14.550, while Indonesia secured their first-ever gymnastics medal with Agus Prayoko on 14.125.

New Delhi : Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said on Friday he would not hesitate to leave Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench if he felt the Portugal forward needed to save energy. Allegri confirmed that Ronaldo, signed from Real Madrid for 105 million euros ($120.09 million) in the close season, would start in Saturday’s game against Lazio, where he will make his home debut, but that things would change as the

season draws on. “He has to understand that there will be times when he starts on the bench and then just plays half an hour,” Allegri said. “Even he will need a break at some point. At Real Madrid, he was excellently managed.” He added: “Ronaldo trains very competitively, he takes nothing for granted and is a champion, building his own success over the years through hard work and sacrifice.

New Delhi : The Indian football team will face a tough test when it takes on defending A-League Premier Champions Sydney FC in a friendly match on August 28 as part of its exposure tour of Australia. India are also scheduled to play APIA Leichhardt Tigers FC and Rydalmere Lions FC on August 25 and 31 respectively. “Sydney FC are the current A-League Premiers Champion and the best-performing club over the last 3 years. It will be a huge test for us and we are ready for that,” India head coach Constantine said. The Sydney-based outfit finished their A-League campaign with a handsome 14-point lead over Newcastle Jets, who were second in the points table in the

2017-18 A-League season. Reflecting on the other two opponents, Constantine said: “We are scheduled to play against APIA Leichhardt tomorrow and they have been on a decent run recently. They beat Melbourne Victory in a cup match earlier this week and we’re getting ready for a taxing game. “Our last game is against another NPL team Rydalmere Lions FC who have also made the right noises last season. Both of the teams would feature a mix of U-20 and Senior Team boys.” While APIA Leichhardt Tigers FC are the reigning National Premier Leagues NSW premiers champion, Rydalmere Lions FC have been promoted to NSW NPL2 after finishing at the top of NSW NPL 3 last season.

Stokes was initially ruled out of Friday’s match at Durham’s Chester-le-Street headquarters after suffering minor discomfort in his left knee during England’s 203run defeat by India in the third Test at Trent Bridge which

concluded Wednesday. Stokes was recalled by England at Trent Bridge just days after his acquittal on a charge of affray following an incident outside a Bristol nightclub in September last year and on Thursday he retained his place when the squad was announced for the fourth Test at Southampton starting on August 30. Shortly after the Southampton squad was unveiled, Durham confirmed Stokes would be

fit to face Sussex after all -but only in the roles of lefthanded batsman and fielder rather than lively right-arm pace bowler. “Ben Stokes has been made available by the England and Wales Cricket Board for tomorrow night’s Vitality Blast quarter-final against Sussex Sharks,” said a statement on Durham’s website. “The all-rounder will add significant firepower as a batsman only as the Jets aim for a place at finals day.

The matter is expected to come up for hearing on Monday (August 27) before the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), sources said. When contacted, Patanjali Spokesperson S K Tijarawala declined to comment, saying that matter is sub-judice. A spokesperson of Adani Group also declined to comment. The resolution professional has to seek NCLT approval after the lenders choose a bid. Adani Wilmar and Patanjali group have been engaged in a longdrawn battle to take over Ruchi Soya. While Adani Wilmar emerged as the highest bidder with a Rs 6,000 crore offer, Patanjali group came second with

a Rs 5,700 crore bid. Patanjali Ayurved had earlier sought clarification from the RP (resolution professional) of Ruchi Soya related to eligibility of Adani Group to participate in the bidding process. It also sought to know the parameters adopted by the RP to declare Adani Wilmar as the highest bidder. The Haridwar-based firm had also questioned the appointment of Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas as the RP’s legal advisor as the said law firm was already advising Adani Group. Patanjali was asked to submit a revised bid by June 16 to match or better the highest offer of Rs 6,000 crore by Adani Wilmar under the Swiss Challenge system adopted by the RP and the committee of creditors. However, Patanjali wrote to the RP seeking clarifications instead of submitting a fresh bid. Adani Wilmar has been selected by the CoC after two-rounds of bidding. Ruchi Soya, which is facing the insolvency proceedings, has a total debt of about Rs 12,000 crore.

South Korean court raises ex-president Park Geun-hye’s jail term to 25 years

Seoul : A South Korean appeals court sentenced former President Park Geun-hye to 25 years in jail on Friday in a case arising from a far-reaching corruption scandal that toppled her from power in 2017. Park became South Korea’s first democratically elected leader to be forced from office when the Constitutional Court removed her over a scandal that landed the heads of two conglomerates in jail.
