Short News Daredevil selfie with speeding train injures Hyd man who ignored warnings

Hyderabad: A young man, aiming for a daring selfie with a speeding Hyderabad Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) train with the help of the front camera of his smart phone, ended up in hospital on Monday after getting hit. The disturbing video has gone viral. The man, Shiva, reportedly suffered head injuries. In the video clip that emerged on Wednesday, the man in his early 20s smiles at his smartphone camera and kept his right arm pointed towards the approaching MMTS train. Someone was heard warning him but he was determined to carry on his daredevil act. The train’s whistle got louder as it approached closer to the man and those watching the video can sense the danger, but Shiva looks ignorant. The speeding train suddenly hits the man and the image goes blank after a loud sound. The audio, still on, indicates a commotion as people realise what happened and rush towards the injured man. In the final moments of the video, the train appears to hit the man violently in the face as the video switches off. Shiva seemed to have misjudged the impact of the train’s speed. The video comes a day after a Kashmiri man shoots a death-defying stunt in which he lies on a railway track while a speeding train passes over him. The video has taken the social media by storm, prompting calls for strict action to prevent it from becoming a trend.

Protesters take to streets, block roads ahead of ‘Padmaavat’ release

Mumbai: Just a day before the muchawaited release of ‘Padmaavat’, security has been heightened outside theatres across Haryana, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Violent protests by groups like Rajput Karni Sena were reported from different parts of the country. Karni Sena has vowed to block the release of ‘Padmaavat’ in defiance of Supreme Court orders. “We are adamant on our stand that this film ‘Padmaavat’ should be banned, there should be a self imposed curfew by people,” said Rajput Karni Sena leader Lokendra Singh Kalvi. Protesters blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway agitating against the release of 190-crore Sanjay Leela Bhansali film ‘Padmaavat.’ Besides DelhiJaipur highway, protesters also gathered on the Delhi-Ajmer highway and burnt tyres. Sporadic violence was reported from Rajasthan’s Sikar, where a bus was stoned. Protesters in Haryana blocked the Gurgaon’s Wazirpur-Pataudi road agitating against the film. In Gurgaon, the state administration has banned people armed with weapons and other objects “capable of causing injury” near movie theatres. Protests with slogans and placards have also been banned within a 200-metre radius till Sunday.

Traffic curbs for visiting leaders trouble commuters in Delhi

New Delhi : Traffic movement in the national capital went for a toss Wednesday as vehicles were either stopped at signals for a longer duration or diverted to ensure a smooth passage to ASEAN leaders arriving in Delhi for a summit tomorrow. It was a double whammy for commuters travelling from Gurgaon and Dwarka towards New Delhi. They were stuck in traffic snarls owing to the VIP movement and the security arrangements put in place by police ahead of the Republic Day. “I was stuck for almost an hour on Dhaula Kuan and Sardar Patel Marg while coming from Dwarka. The two stretches were choked. There was heavy barricading on Sardar Patel Marg,” a commuter said. Commuters may have to witness delays through the day, the police warned. A senior Delhi Traffic Police official said the department has requested Google Maps to show alternate routes and diversions that have been put in place by authorities. The official said movement of vehicles had to be stopped on certain stretches, including Dhaula Kuan, for a few minutes owing to the VIP movement. The situation will continue until the visiting leaders travel from the airport to their hotels in Lutyens’ Delhi. The 10 ASEAN leaders will be moving towards their hotels from the airport and for meetings through the day and there is likely to be intermittent delays.

AAP MLAs disqualification: HC asks EC to not announce bypolls until Monday HC also refused to pass any interim order on staying the Centre’s notification disqualifying 20 AAP MLAs for holding offices of profit.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to stay the Centre’s notification disqualifying 20 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs for holding office of profit The court also restrained the Election Commission (EC) from taking any “precipitate measures” like announcing the dates for bypolls to the seats held by 20 AAP legislators disqualified from the Delhi Assembly for holding offices of profit till its next hearing on January 29. In addition, the Delhi HC ordered the EC -

which disqualified the 20 AAP MLAs last week- to file its reply on the issue by February 6. Eight of the 20 MLAs from Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP had filed three petitions requesting that an EC recommendation to the President to disqualify them and the notification issued after President Ram Nath Kovind signed off on it be cancelled. The MLAs have alleged that the EC recommended their disqualification without giving them a fair chance to defend themselves and asked

the court to order the poll body to hear their side. They also sought that the disqualification be reversed till the EC hears the matter again. Five of the former AAP legislators argued in their plea that the EC had acted in “undue haste”, and without “affording” and “giving any opportunity of a fair hearing” to the petitioners. The MLAs further argued that the EC “failed to follow due process of law by not offering the petitioners a full hearing before making the final opinion to the President”.

Convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case asks SC to recall its 1999 order

New Delhi: A convict in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi has moved the Supreme Court requesting to reopen the case and cancel 1999 conviction order. AG Perarivalan, who has spent 26 years in jail, was convicted of supplying two nine-volt batteries for the belt-bomb that killed Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, and sentenced to life in jail. In his application, Perarivalan has said that he is languishing in jail for the past 26 years. The move comes on Wednesday after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said the apex court that it could not properly investigate the bomb that killed the former prime minister because it “got no help from Sri Lanka” in establishing the origin of the conspiracy.

Lalu Prasad Yadav sentenced to 5 years in jail in Chaibasa Treasury case

Ranchi: Special CBI court in Ranchi sentenced RJD chief and former chief minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav to 5 years in jail in the third fodder scam case on Wednesday. Along with Lalu, former Bihar chief Jagannath Mishra, was also sentenced to five years in prison in the case. Both Lalu Yadav and Jagannath Mishra, were also fined Rs 5 lakh each by Ran chi Court. The conviction and the quantum of punishment was delivered in a case related to the Chaibasa Treasury from which Rs 33.67 crore were siphoned off against the actual allocation of just Rs 7.10 lakh in 1992-93. Lalu Yadav has been named as the main conspirator in this case. After the conviction on Wednesday, Lalu’s son Tejashwi Yadav said his RJD will move higher courts against all the verdicts against the RJD chief. “People know how BJP, RSS and

more importantly Nitish Kumar have conspired against Laluji. We will approach higher courts against all these verdicts,” said Tejashwi. Lalu Prasad is already convicted in another fodder scam case and was sentenced to three and a half years in jail earlier in

January. The last case in which the RJD chief was convicted and sent to jail dealt with fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 89 lakh from the Deoghar district treasury between 1990 and 1994. After the Chaibasa Treasury verdict, there are two more cases in Jharkhand where the verdict is expected in the coming months. In one case of Doranda Treasury, the trial is still going on, while in the Dumka Treasury case, the trial is in its final stages. Lalu’s bail plea in the Deogarh Treasury case, is currently pending in the Jharkhand High Court. The fodder scam involved the embezzlement of more than Rs 970 crore in government funds during Lalu Yadav’s term as the Chief Minister of undivided Bihar from 1990 to 1997. The accused allegedly invented vast herds of livestock to obtain public money for fodder and medicines for them.

Can’t stop media reporting on Sohrabuddin fake encounter case trial: Bombay HC Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday quashed and set aside the trial court’s order prohibiting journalists from reporting on or publishing the proceedings of the Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter case trial. Justice Revati MohiteDere minced no words in holding that the special CBI court overreached its powers in issuing the order. She agreed with the petitioners -a group of court reporters and city-based Union of Journalists -that the Criminal

Procedure Code provided only for the high courts and the apex court to issue such ban orders. Such an order could be issued only in rare cases, and for a limited period of time, the court said. Justice Mohite-Dere said mere apprehension of sensationalism by the accused was not a sufficient ground for issuing such gag orders. On November 29 last year, the special CBI court had barred journalists from reporting or publishing the proceedings of the ongoing trial in the case.

China lauds Modi’s Davos speech, says will jointly fight protectionism

Davos/New Delhi: China welcomed on Wednesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at Davos where he described protectionism as being “as dangerous as terrorism”, and evinced interest in enhancing cooperation with India to strengthen the globalisation process. Modi, the first Indian prime minister to address the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual summit in Davos in two decades, talked on Tuesday about grave concerns facing the world, including terrorism and climate change. “Many countries are

becoming inward focused and globalisation is shrinking and such tendencies can’t be considered lesser risk than terrorism or climate change,” he had said. “I noticed that Prime Minister Modi made some remarks on protectionism and his remarks showed that globalisation is the trend of the times and serves the interests of all the countries including developing countries and the fight against protectionism and promoting globalisation,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing in Davos.

Mahadayi water row: K’taka bandh on Ramrajyaisgovernance sans fear, corruption, Jan 25 ‘politically motivated’, says BJP discrimination: Naidu Bengaluru: The opposition BJP has termed as “politically motivated” calls for two bandhs on January 25 and February 4 by pro-Kannada outfits, demanding the Prime Minister’s intervention in the inter-state Mahadayi river water dispute with Goa. The party alleged Congress government had a role in selection of dates when BJP national president Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to visit the poll bound state to take part in ‘Nav Karnataka Parivartan Yatra’, organised by the state unit. The outfits

have called for a Karnataka bandh on January 25 when Shah will address a rally in Mysuru and a Bengaluru bandh on February 4, the day Modi arrives in the city. “There is no necessity for a Karnataka bandh. If there was a bandh in the

affected area, it is fine; what has Mysuru got to do with the issue?” BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa asked. Accusing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of extending support to the bandh with “malicious” intent, he said “Chief

Minister is trying to create confusion, stop buses and close schools and colleges as done in the past....I have not heard of any Chief Minister behaving in such a manner.” The January 25 programme would go ahead as planned, he said in Mysuru and added that his party was in favour of protecting the state’s interests on the Mahadayi issue. Accusing Congress of playing politics, Leader of the Opposition Jagadish Shettar questioned the need to call for a bandh in Bengaluru on February 4 when a state-wide call had been given on January 25.

Lucknow : Advocating Ramrajya, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu Wednesday said that the name of Lord Ram should not be associated with religion as governance minus fear, corruption and discrimination is Ramrajya and for this everyone should unite transcending caste, religious and political barriers. “The name of Lord Ram should not be related with any particular religion. He should be seen as an ideal person. Hinduism is not a religion but a life style and that is why India is named Hindustan,” Naidu said at the first UP Diwas programme here in the presence of Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, among other dignitaries.

Inevitable twist to judicial crisis

T hat the Supreme Court crisis, precipitated by four senior judges under the leadership of Justice J Chelameswar holding a press conference, would not get resolved on its own, was abundantly clear as new dimensions of the mutiny began to unravel in the days that followed. Although earnest efforts were made to first limit the damage and then try and find an honourable exit, the bid could not yield any positive results. The executive initially maintained a studied silence, keeping off the highly sensitive issue, wisely so, as it involved the credibility and the prestige of the highest court of the land and in the conviction that it was best left to be settled by the judges themselves. Generally, all the political parties toed a similar line, barring one or two stray visits to the judges by politicians on the basis of what was claimed to be personal friendship. But as more sordid details of the ‘far from desirable’ state of affairs began to emerge, attitudes began to harden and it was no longer possible to consider it as an internal matter. Now in a new twist to the unprecedented drama, political parties are revisiting the issue as CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury has started holding discussions with like-minded parties on the possibility of impeaching CJI Dipak Misra, whom the senior judges accused of misusing his power as the master of roster to allocate politically sensitive cases to ‘pliable’ benches headed by junior judges. Yechury has apparently reached out to NCP, Samajwadi Party, RJD and even Congress to evolve a consensus on the issue. The parties are veering round to the view that the integrity and independence of the judiciary are non-negotiable and that parliament cannot be a silent spectator to the kind of allegations levelled against the CJI. It did not exactly help the cause of the CJI when it emerged that over a dozen super-sensitive cases involving political leaders had been referred to the benches of junior judges. We have all along maintained that issues raised by the mutineering judges are so grave that these cannot be settled by judges, divided into two camps, sitting around a table and thrashing out a solution. Because the crisis raises fundamental issues that have a bearing on the trust and confidence of people in the judiciary, which are so vital to safeguard democracy in the country. The aggrieved judges had taken the position that as they have failed to elicit a satisfactory response internally, they were putting the issue in people’s court. The judges have the sympathy of a large number of Indians who always believed that in India, law and justice are for those who can afford it. And when it is stated on the authority of four senior judges whose integrity and competence are beyond any doubt, it cannot be just pushed under the carpet, feigning that everything is hunky-dory with our judiciary.

Sridevi lip job video: What’s wrong with the actress’s lips?

Bollywood evergreen actress Sridevi was recently seen at director Anurag Basu’s Saraswati Pooja. But this time the actress looked strikingly different because of her plumper lips. We wonder if she has undergone a surgery to look a certain way. Earlier, when ‘English Vinglish’ actress was asked if she has had plastic surgery, she had rebuffed by saying, “No, I haven’t. I want to tell these people that instead of whining and criticising, why don’t you move out of your comfort zone, zip your mouth and slog it out? Then let’s talk! There will be a visible change not just in your appearance, but also in your attitude. But if you’re a lazy bum, hooked to TV, and cannot give up your food because you know you can undergo cosmetic surgery, you’re damned! It doesn’t work like that. Anything that is plastic melts in no time. You have to understand that there’s a regime for everything and

you benefit by associating yourself with it. To look and feel good, you have to slog it out.” She had added, “I lead a systematic life. I am health conscious, I do power yoga, play tennis four days a week, control my diet and resist junk food, fried stuff and sweets, even though I have a sweet tooth. And most importantly, I don’t sweat the small stuff (laughs). All these bring a change in the appearance.” Sridevi was last seen in Ravi Udywar’s thriller drama ‘MOM’, in which her performance was highly praised. The versatile actress also scored a nomination for the Best Actress Award at the 63rd Filmfare Awards. On the related note, Sridevi’s elder daughter Janhvi is all set to make her Bollywood debut in Dharma Production’s ‘Dhadak’ opposite Ishaan Khatter. Rumour is, Sridevi will be seen playing a role of her mother in the film. It is slated to release on 20th July, 2018.

The Guillermo del Toro-directed film left touted favourites ‘Dunkirk’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ far behind. ‘The Shape of Water’ was one nomination shy from becoming only the fourth movie in the Oscars history to bag a record 14 nods, levelling the stature held by ‘La La Land’, ‘All About Eve’ and ‘Titanic’. It was followed by Christopher Nolan’s war drama ‘Dunkirk’ with eight, Martin McDonagh’s ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ with seven, Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Phantom Thread’ and Joe Wright’s ‘Darkest Hour’ with six nods each. Why CISF security eludes Surat airport?

SURAT: Even as the monthly passenger traffic has increased to more than 60,000 passengers and flight movement to over 20, Surat airport continues to face neglect from the central government when it comes to enhancing safety and security of passengers. Despite long-pending demand for deployment of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at Surat airport, the civil aviation ministry and the ministry of home affairs (MHA) have turned a blind eye to the need. Recently, the office of director general of CISF stated that the CISF was a need-based force and its deployment is made as per the instructions of the MHA. In case

of airports, the nodal agency Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is empowered to conduct survey and the need for manpower is recommended to the MHA after sanction from the ministry of civil aviation. ‘We Work For A Working Airport At Surat’ (WWWAS) member Rajesh Modi has written to BCAS for initiating a survey

Seventeen-year-old Radha Yadav was on Tuesday picked up for the Indian team that will be touring South Africa next month. I am very happy,” Radha told TOI over phone from Mumbai where she is playing an official BCCI match. A left-arm spinner, Radha is an agile fielder and wields the willow too. Having played for Mumbai, Radha shifted to Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) in 201415. Radha has played for Baroda in U-19 West Zone tournament, senior women’s one-day tournament, senior women’s T20 tournament and U-23 West Zone one-day tournament.

AHMEDABAD:: Women who start their periods at an early age (at the age of 11 or younger), or experience an early menopause, are at greater risk of heart attack or stroke, new research suggests. According to the study published in Journal Heart, several other factors like miscarriage, stillbirth, undergoing a hysterectomy, and bearing children at a young age were also associated with a an elevated odds of cardiovascular diseases in later life. The additional risk varied from only a few percentage points to more than 40%. Supporting the research, Dr. Sharad

Jain, Interventional Cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad said “While it is not clear whether reproductive factors are driving the increased risks, more frequent screening of women whose reproductive history suggests that they might be at higher risk of cardiovascular disease could help to prevent or delay its onset”. The team looked at more than 267,000 women and 215,000 men who were healthy and had no history of cardiovascular disease, and then looked at what happened to those participants in the seven years that followed. The

statistics showed 5,782 participants developed coronary heart disease and there were 3,489 cases of stroke. Altogether, 9,054 participants developed one or both cardiovascular diseases, 34% of whom were women. The average age of women participants was 56 when monitoring began. More than four-fifths had been pregnant, and nearly half had two children. On average, they started having their periods at 13, and had their first child at 26. The findings revealed that in 2016, about twothirds of the women had gone through menopause, at an average age of 50.
