Singh, who is a Lok Sabha lawmaker from Lucknow, was speaking at the Yuva Kumbh event in the Uttar Pradesh capital when members attending the function interrupted his speech for around four minutes. “Jo Mandir Banwayega, vote ussi ko jayega (We will vote for the party, which constructs the Ram Temple),” the audience chanted disrupting Singh’s speech. Uddhav Thackeray borrows Rahul’s words to attack PM, says ‘chowkidar hi chor hai’

New Delhi : Days after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said BJP was keen on an alliance with Shiv Sena, party chief Uddhav Thackeray on Monday listed a few conditions before the saffron party for such a pact, the foremost being a decision on Ram temple and farm loan waiver. The remark indicates that the Sena might be amenable to talks for an alliance after it had declared earlier this year that it would go solo in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “Shiv Sena not interested in an alliance with BJP till decisions are taken on Ram temple, farm loan waiver, and crop insurance,” Thackeray said at a religious congregation in Pandharpur, which comes exactly a month after his visit to Ayodhya. Let’s protect individual’s ‘inviolate personality’

First came the ham-handed notification authorizing selected agencies to intercept, monitor and decrypt any information generated, transmitted, received or stored in any computer resource. Then, following a massive uproar, came the government’s weak defence—there was nothing new in the executive order as it had existed in the books since 2009. Notwithstanding these clarifications issued post-haste by the government, the issue of the private lives of citizens being placed under state surveillance is now squarely in the public domain. It is true that the Congress-led UPA did pass several draconian laws like Section 66A, which dealt with penalties for sending offensive messages, and the offending act, Section 69. The mystery is why the Modi government felt the need to restate this as it was already on the books. Was it a veiled threat to some people about actions to come, adding grist to the mill that the BJP, pushed to the wall by recent poll reverses, would target opposition leaders in the run up to the elections next year? What is equally mysterious is why, if security is the dominant motif of the order, the Central Board of Direct Taxes is included in the list of authorized agencies. But this is all quibbling over semantics, for the real issue is that governments, irrespective of their political dispensation, have over the last few decades intruded into spaces that were hitherto considered sacrosanct. Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis, the two Boston lawyers who first articulated the idea of a right to privacy, in their original law review article published in December of 1890, described it as one which embodied protections for each individual’s “inviolate personality”. “The common law secures to each individual the right of determining, ordinarily, to what extent his thoughts, sentiments, and emotions shall be communicated to others,” they argued. In the name of security and safety, governments across the world have upended this original definition with all kinds of caveats, progressively diluting this inviolable space. Yet, never before has the individual been more vulnerable. In the information age, digital networks now have a stranglehold on data that lays bare every human being rendering her life in its minutest detail. We are now part of what dotcom entrepreneur and author John Battelle dubbed in 2003 “the database of intentions”.

los angeles : Pop diva Jennifer Lopez believes men are ‘’much more fragile and sensitive’’ than women. The singer said strong and assertive females have to ‘’tiptoe’’ around their male counterparts. “I think as women, we have to do that all the time. We’re said to be the more fragile, sensitive gender, but I think the truth is that men are much more fragile and sensitive. And we have to be stronger and more conscious of not hurting fragile egos at times.“So it’s a line you do have to tiptoe on all the time - especially as a strong, assertive woman, which can be off-putting to men who are not confident and secure on their own,” Lopez told Vanity Fair magazine. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min rip Everton apart as Spurs hit six

Spurs delivered a sensational performance to romp to a 6-2 win over Everton at Goodison Park to move just two points behind second-placed Manchester City and six behind leaders Liverpool.

Liverpool : Tottenham Hotspur showed the Premier League title race might not be just a two-horse affair with a hugely impressive 6-2 win at Everton on Sunday with Harry Kane and Son Heungmin both scoring twice. Scintillating Spurs are now just two points behind second-placed Manchester City and trail Liverpool by six but after this performance, the London club look well capable of pushing their rivals all the way. “Everybody’s been talking about Liverpool and Manchester City, and we’ve been getting on with it and doing well, like we normally

do,” said Kane. “We’ve had a good month and hopefully we can take that into January now – and February – and we’ll see where we’re at come April time.” Media speculation has suggested Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino could be a target for Manchester United at the end of the season, but if the Argentine had any doubts about the potential of the side he has created they would have vanished with this display. Despite falling a goal behind, Spurs were simply unstoppable once Son had brought them level in the 27th minute.

Coach Ravi Shastri’s statement that Ravindra Jadeja was unfit for the Perth Test raises more questions than answers any.

India vs Australia: Ravi Shastri adds Jadeja injury to insult

Melbourne : The thinking behind leaving Ravindra Jadeja out of the Perth Test is getting murkier. Soon after the defeat, skipper Virat Kohli specified that the four-pronged pace attack was picked purely on conditions rather than fitness and form, that he would have overlooked lead spinner Ravichandran Ashwin even if he had been fully fit, implying that Jadeja didn’t stand a chance of playing. But, three days before the third Test, coach Ravi Shastri contradicted the captain and gave a fresh spin to the debate, saying Jadeja was only “70-80 percent fit” at Perth and carrying a shoulder stiffness from domestic cricket. Thus, in trying to defend the selection faux pas, he has prompted questions on a range of issues, ranging from player injury-management system to the contradiction in the voices

of the coach and captain, workload management, and the tendency to hush-up injuries The team has been copping flak, especially from former cricketers back home, for playing a four-pronged pace attack in the Perth Test, where a spinner was dearly missed. Since Ashwin was

These are around 19 kms from Bokaro Steel Plant, where INOXAP has its on-site liquid production unit. However, Starc backed Kohli. “I’ve played a couple of IPLs with Virat and he’s been fantastic to play under, as a captain,” Starc told reporters. “Obviously, he’s a fantastic player. The way India play this series and go about their cricket, it’s up to them.”

The pair had heated exchanges in the second Test at Perth, prompting the umpire to intervene. Australia won the game to level the four-match series at 1-1. Paine said he understands that Kohli never liked to lose. “A lot was made of my battle with Virat in the second Test, and for the past few years when I haven’t been playing

SBI may raise Rs 12,000 crore overseas for PFC’s REC buy

New Delhi: In one of the biggest fund mobilisation exercise of its kind, the State Bank of India (SBI) has decided to raise around $2 billion overseas to help power sector financier Power Finance Corporation (PFC) acquire government’s entire 52.63 per cent stake in state-owned infrastructure finance company REC (erstwhile Rural Electrification Corporation). Top sources in the banking sector said the government has favoured SBI to mobilise

external commercial financing for PFC due to its size and experience and ability to raise large amount funds overseas at most competitive rates. The finance ministry has been sounded that the bank may get mandate to do Rs 12,000 crore fund hunting for PFC after the plan also got the power ministry’s nod. Subject to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approval, SBI may either tap SBI London or New York for funds. If this is not available then the bank will seek mandate to raise funds

from overseas. In this case, SBI will underwrite the debt backed by government guarantee. At Friday’s closing on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) at Rs 109.35 a price, the government share in REC is valued at Rs 12,000 crore. The amount will be higher if PFC gives a premium over the prevailing price. “Soon SBI will be given the mandate for this fund raising exercise as the government wants to complete the deal between two power sector financiers over the next couple of months. This is also essential to help the Centre mobilise targeted Rs 80,000 as disinvestment proceeds for FY19 as it has only reached about Rs 34,000 crore,” said a banking source privy to the development.

Gold firms up on global cues, jewellers’ buying

New Delhi: Gold rallied by Rs 175 to Rs 32,275 per 10 gram at the bullion market on Monday on the back of positive global cues and fresh buying by local jewellers. Silver followed suit and advanced by Rs 200 to Rs 38,000 per kg due to increase in offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Marketmen said a firm trend overseas, with investor appetite for risk curbed by worries over a partial US government shutdown, China-US trade tensions and faltering global economic growth, influenced gold

prices here. Globally, gold rose 0.51 per cent to USD 1,263 an ounce and silver by 0.41 per cent, to USD 14.76 an ounce in New York. Besides, increased buying by local jewellers at the domestic spot market supported the upside, they added. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purities added Rs 175 each at Rs 32,275 and Rs 32,125 per 10 gram, respectively. The precious metal had lost Rs 130 on Saturday. New Delhi: Mutual funds have added a whopping Rs 3 lakh crore to their asset base in 2018 and the uptrend may continue in the new year, helped by consistent rise in the SIP flows and a strong participation of retail investors despite volatile markets. The asset under management (AUM) of the industry rose by 13 per cent to Rs 24 lakh crore in 2018 by November-end itself, up from Rs 21.26 lakh crore at the end of December 2017, data available with the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) showed. The investor count is also estimated to have grown by over 1.3 crore during the year. However, the industry experts believe that the final AUM figure at December-end might be slightly lower than that of November

as there could be a dip in liquid funds due to a quarter-end phenomenon. “Keep in mind the quarter-end trends and the advance tax pay-out, we expect the industry AUM to close around Rs 23-23.5 lakh crore in 2018,” Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company’s National Head (Sales and Distribution Alliances) Manish Mehta said. The pace of growth, however, declined for the asset size in 2018 as compared to the last year. The industry had seen a surge of 32 per cent in the AUM or an addition of over Rs 5.4 lakh crore in 2017. The IL&FS default and the consequent blow to the NBFC sector because of the credit crunch exposed mutual funds to lakhs of crore worth of ill-liquid debt funds.

Bangladesh deploys soldiers ahead of next Sunday’s elections

Dhaka : Thousands of army soldiers are being deployed across Bangladesh to provide security and help conduct national elections next Sunday. The deployment began early Monday and the soldiers will be on duty until Jan. 2, the military’s public relations office said. The soldiers are setting up camps in 389 areas and navy personnel are fanning out across the coast, according to the statement. The air force is keeping helicopters ready for any urgent needs, and the soldiers will maintain order on important roads or highways

whenever needed. Earlier this month, authorities deployed paramilitary border forces in 87 bordering areas. While such deployment is common ahead of national elections in Bangladesh, the opposition has been strongly demanding the military’s engagement in the election process amid concern that violence could happen. The soldiers usually work as a striking force. At least six people have died in recent weeks while hundreds have been injured. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is seeking to return to power for a third consecutive time in the Dec.

Yangon : A Myanmar court is on Monday due to hear an argument in the appeal of two Reuters reporters sentenced to seven years in jail on charges of breaking the Official Secrets Act. Wa Lone, 32, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, were found guilty in September after a trial at a Yangon district court in a landmark case that has raised questions about Myanmar’s progress towards democracy and sparked an outcry from diplomats and human rights advocates. Defence lawyers filed an appeal against the conviction in early November, citing evidence of a police set-up and

lack of proof of a crime. “We are looking forward to demonstrating to Myanmar’s High Court why it should reverse the convictions of Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo due to the egregious errors committed by the trial court in condemning them to prison for seven years,” Reuters Editor-in-Chief Stephen J. Adler said in a statement. “We will explain to the appellate judge why, under the law, the only possible conclusion is that the appellate court must restore our reporters’ freedom and reaffirm Myanmar’s democratic principles,” he said.

65 US universities oppose Trump administration’s visa policy changes for foreign students

Washington : As many as 65 top US universities, including Harvard and MIT, have challenged the Trump administration in a court against its new stringent visa policy for foreign students, warning that the new ‘backdating’ rule will have a detrimental effect on America’s higher education system. The new policy announced by the Trump administration in August places restrictions on overstaying a visa. Under longstanding immigration policies, when an individual is no longer authorised to remain in the US — such as when a visa expires — a period of “unlawful

presence” begins. After six months of unlawful presence, an individual can be forced to return to their country of origin and subject to a three year bar from the US. Prior to the August policy change, individuals only began to accrue unlawful presence the day after the government issued an official determination that the visa holder was “out of status”. With the new rules, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) can set retroactive start dates for unlawful presence that begin the day after an individual’s degree programme is complete

or the day after a person’s visa expires. The top institutions, including Harvard, MIT, Cornell, Yale, and Princeton signed onto an amicus brief filed Monday, arguing that the new rule puts visa-holding students in a position to make “tough choices”. These institutions argue that the new policy’s use of a “backdated unlawfulpresence clock” will render tens of thousands of F, J and M categories of visa holders subject to three and 10-year re-entry bars without any opportunity to cure.
