Maratha group calls off Mumbai bandh call after stir turns violent

Mumbai : The Maratha Kranti Morcha, an outfit spearheading agitation for quota for the maratha community in jobs and education, withdrew its Mumbai bandh call on Wednesday after various parts of the city witnessed violence. Violence marred the Maratha community’s bandh as protesters threw stones at policemen in the neighbouring Navi Mumbai township and Satara district, injuring three personnel. In retaliation, the police canecharged protesters, fired plastic bullets and lobbed tear gas shells at them, an official said. Protesters

attacked buses, indulged in arson and pelted stones at local trains in several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and the adjoining Thane city. The Mumbai-Pune and MumbaiGoa highways were blocked for hours by the protesters. “We only wanted to prove that we are together and proved it. We never wanted protests to get violent and therefore we are calling off our bandh in Mumbai for today,” Virendra Pawar, leader of the Morcha told reporters in Mumbai. The Maratha Kranti Morcha had given the call for the bandh, demanding an apology from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for alleging that some members from the community were planning violence at Pandharpur town in Solapur district.

Patel’s lawyer moved a bail plea in the court. Patel is allowed to file a bail plea given that he has been awarded a jail term less than 3 years. Fugitive Economic Offenders bill passed in Parliament New Delhi: The Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance, 2018 was passed by Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. After being cleared by Lok Sabha last week without any amendment, the ordinance was tabled in Rajya Sabha by Finance Minister Piyush Goyal. The minister said instances of people running away and evading legal legal process was increasing, which needed to be stopped as the current laws do not allow dealing with the “severity of the problem”. “Criminal law does not allow us to impound their property,” he added. “This bill is an effective, expeditious and constitutional way to stop these offenders from running away. Legislative changes or a new law must be in place to confiscate assets of such absconders till they don’t present themselves in front of the courts. We will also work out what has to be done with the confiscated assets,” Goyal said. While replying to the debate, he said there cannot be a situation where economic offenders run away from the country and also protect their properties. Justifying

property and assault on some media persons. During the violent agitation, the mob had also torched a car and vandalised the office of local BJP MLA Rishikesh Patel. Reacting to the court’s order, Patel said that he will cross all the hurdles in the path of his struggle for the rights of the poor. Hardik Patel was arrested in October 2015 for inciting violence during the

However, during the 102nd session of the Interpol Commission from December 24-27, 2017, the world body opined that the issuance of RCN for Naik’s arrest, with a view to his extradition, was pre-mature, since the charge sheet had not been filed till the sending of the original request for RCN to the Interpol, Ahir said. time by an hour. They had complained of "a slow voting process" and thus sought more time to facilitate voters - a request that was rejected by the Election Commission. Hours after polling began for the general elections, an Islamic State suicide bomber blew himself up outside a polling station in Bhosa Mandi area of Balochistan's provincial capital, Quetta, killing 31 people, including policemen. In separate incidents, four persons

were killed in pollrelated violence. Clashes erupted between rival parties outside several polling stations, reports said. The election marks the second democratic transition of power in the nation's 70-year history. While polling stations officially opened for voting at 8 AM, enthusiastic citizens queued up outside their respective stations as early as 7 AM. Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa cast his vote in Rawalpindi.

Two cops get death for Udayakumar's custodial death: Everything you need to know about the case

New Delhi : In the afternoon of September 27, 2005, sometime around 2:30 pm, constables of the Fort Police Station in Thiruvananthapuram picked up Udayakumar, a 27-year-old worker at a scrapyard, and his friend Suresh Kumar from the Sreekantheshwaram Park in Kochi on charges of theft. The cops found in their possession Rs 4,500 which they suspected was stolen currency. The two were transported to the police station in an autorickshaw and taken into custody by the constables. Udayakumar, in particular, was questioned about the alleged theft and later subjected to brutal torture by the police with the intention of extricating a confession from him. According to officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation,

which probed the case, the constables made Udayakumar lie spread-eagled on his back on a wooden bench and beat his soles with a cane stick. Subsequently, the officers rolled down a heavy, hollow iron pipe on Udayakumar’s thighs as part of third-degree torture measures. The injuries sustained in the torture that day led to Udayakumar’s death in custody, sparking panic among the officers. The incident, which when tumbled into the public spotlight, sparked massive protests against the inhuman treatment meted out to Udayakumar by the state police force. Attempts to cover up the case by fudging records and fabricating false cases against Udayakumar especially by the senior officials were probed by

the CBI which took over the case in 2008 on directions of the Kerala High Court. For Udayakumar, his aged mother Prabhavati fought relentlessly and singlehandedly, going from court to court and demanding justice for her son. The long trial of the case, which saw an initial sloppy investigation by the state police and later extensive probing by the CBI,

saw witnesses like Suresh Kumar turning hostile and changing his statement under alleged police pressure. There were also charges of fabrication of crucial evidence during the course of the trial. After 13long years, on Tuesday, a CBI special court in Thiruvananthapuram found two civil police officers, K Jithakumar and SV Sreekumar, guilty of murdering Udayakumar. A third CPO, Soman, accused in the case, passed away during the course of the trial. Three other senior officers, then Assistant Commissioner TK Haridas, then Circle Inspector EK Sabu and then-Sub Inspector Ajith Kumar were found guilty of abetment to crime by fudging records and destroying evidence.

Maratha groups call off Mumbai bandh, quota protests continue The Sakal Maratha Samaj, an umbrella organisation representing a host of Maratha groups, suspended on Wednesday afternoon the call for a Mumbai bandh and asked protesters in neighbouring cities of Thane and Navi Mumbai to do so. Virendra Pawar, Mumbai coordinator of the Sakal Maratha Samaj, told reporters at a press conference that the Mumbai bandh was being suspended to allow people to return home from their workplaces. Claiming that the bandh was peaceful, Pawar alleged that some vested political interests had tried to make it violent. Asked about violence in other parts of the state, including Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai, Pawar said the Sakal Maratha Samaj would be able to comment only after it had “gathered more information” on reports of violence. But he added that the Sakal Maratha Samaj co-ordinators had told protestors in those areas that had reported violence to maintain calm. The Maratha caste, which accounts for 3235% of Maharashtra’s population, has been on the warpath demanding 16% quota in education and government jobs. Virendra Pawar said the bandh was totally successful, adding that the Maratha community had demonstrated that a bandh in Mumbai could be achieved even without political support. “The Maharashtra government has been cheating and exploiting the Maratha community for the last two years. It is this government that is responsible for turning the peaceful protest into a violent one,” Virendra Pawar said. While Mumbai observed a largely peaceful bandh except for a couple of attempts to torch BEST buses in Mankhurd and arson in Mulund, Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai witnessed violent clashes between protestors and the police. The protestors torched at least four police vehicles in Kalamboli, blocking the Mumbai-Pune highway for nearly four hours. The protestors also pelted the police in Kalamboli following which the police fired in the air and used tear gas. In Thane, a violent mob of protestors damaged two buses of Thane Municipal Transport in the Vartak Nagar area and after the bandh was called off in Mumbai, an unruly mob showered policemen with stones at Nitin Company area, injuring several police personnel. Road traffic from Mumbai to Thane on the Eastern Express Highway was blocked for several hours after the protestors took to the streets. Though protestors tried to block the suburban train traffic also at a few points, trains largely ran smoothly on all western, central, and harbour lines. However, violence in Navi Mumbai disrupted the Thane-Navi Mumbai suburban railway traffic for some hours. Elsewhere in Maharashtra, the protest turned violent in Satara along the Mumbai-Bengaluru expressway where the district superintendent of police was injured in stone pelting by the protestors. Incidents of arson were also reported from Ahmednagar and Nashik districts.

Meghan Markle needs to follow a bedtime rule Princess Diana hated

Meghan Markle doesn’t just have strict sartorial rules in the Royal family, her life is currently governed by Royal rules - from what to say, what to eat, and when to sleep. That’s why the Duchess of Sussex is, perhaps, gradually learning to extend her bedtime. According to Sir William Heseltine one of Queen Elizabeth II’s private secretaries - members of the Royal family are required to wait till they hit the hay until the Queen retires to bed. It is considered a “bad form” to go to bed before the Queen,

Heseltine told news. com.au. “Nobody felt it right to go to bed before the Queen did,” he explained. Bedtime used to be something Princess Diana had to struggle with, Heseltine added. “For Diana, the long Royal evenings were agony...Diana was driven to such extremes that she’d excuse herself and go to bed, which was thought to be rather bad form, going to bed before the Queen,” he said We wonder how Meghan - who, till now, has been compared to Princess Diana on several occasions - feels about this bedtime rule.

silence, several of her close colleagues and friends have come out in support, including Osman Khalid Butt, Adnan Siddiqui and Aijaz Aslam. Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi Trailer: Jimmy Shergill is Outstanding in This Funny-looking Sequel

Mumbai : When Happy Bhag Jayegi released in 2016, nobody expected it to be a hit. The film drew immense praise for its fresh story and funny screenplay. Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Deol and Diana Penty equally contributed to the film by delivering terrific performances. Once again, the team is all set to tickle your funny bones. While Jimmy, Diana, Abhay, Ali Fazal and Piyush Mishra are

reprising their roles, Sonakshi Sinha and Punjabi actor-singer Jassie Gill have joined them in the sequel. The makers have shared the first trailer for the new film and it looks damn funny. The nearly threeminute long trailer begins with a lot of confusion as Sonakshi Sinha’s Happy shouts at a Chinese goon who has brought her to China thinking she is the original Happy, played by Diana in the first

part. Meanwhile, Jimmy Shergill’s wedding gets called off as he has also been abducted by the same gang. Things get even more confusing when Jimmy (Daman Singh Bagga) meets Sonakshi’s Happy. Diana makes a brief appearance with Ali in the trailer. Piyush Mishra is bang on with his Urdu dialogues. The funniest scene of the trailer is when Jimmy pronounces lesbian as “labrador”.

Women’s Hockey World Cup: India play Ireland in pursuit of first win

New Delhi : Ramanathan Kumarappan and his wife Alagammai haven’t slept well in two weeks. With a smidgen of guilt, they will tell you that tournaments in the US, which go well past their bedtime in Chennai, lie at the heart of their current phase of insomnia. But for son Ramkumar, currently India’s second highest-ranked

singles player, they’re willing to brave groggy mornings, even if it’s just to bury the despair of his close defeats during the phone calls that follow. On Sunday night, they had an extra rush for forgoing sleep: Ramkumar was chasing history. Until the eve of his semi-finals in Newport though, the 23-year-old had no idea

of the heft of a win or final appearance. He was only three when Leander Paes became India’s last singles tour titlist in 1998. In a tournament ruled by upsets -- with just two seeded players advancing to the quarter-finals -- there was hope that the 161-ranked, big-serving Ramkumar, who’d dropped just one set all week on his

way to the Hall of Fame Open final, would match Leander’s feat. Under wet conditions in Newport against world no.48 Steve Johnson, he managed to win 75 per cent of his first-serve points against the American’s 83 per cent. He lost in three sets but still made history, becoming the first Indian singles player since Somdev Devvarman in 2011 to

Re-calibration to new reforms leads to drop in residential launches in Ahmedabad: Knight Frank India

Knight Frank India today launched the ninth edition of its flagship half yearly report - India Real Estate. It presents a comprehensive analysis of the residential and office market performance of Ahmedabad for the period January – June 2018 (H1 2018). Speaking about the findings, Balbirsingh Khalsa, Director – Ahmedabad, Knight Frank India said, “The office market in Ahmedabad is in its infancy but is already showing signs of moving on to the next level.

While the amount of transacted space has seen a massive drop in H1 2018, compared to the same period last year, compared to H2 2017, it has witnessed an increase of 45%. Rentals too have moved up for

want of quality space. An interesting trend visible in the Ahmedabad office market is that coworking spaces made its entry in the city and average transaction size dropped by 47%, a sign that transaction of smaller sizes are on the rise. “Sales have managed to remain steady in H1 2018. Launches on the other hand have gone down by 29%. The numbers do paint a sorry figure but the drop in new launches has more to do with the market trying to adjust to the new policies rather than any fundamental flaw in the market. With

a QTS of 7 Ahmedabad continues to remain a healthy market. We hope that once the market adjusts to the new policy initiatives, it will soon start to look up.” Knight Frank LLP is the leading independent global property consultancy. National ‘I’m human, can make mistakes’: Italian photographer slammed for India hunger series apologises

New Delhi : Alessio Mamo, the Italian photographer whose “Dreaming Food” series on hunger in India has invited a flood of criticism for its depiction of poverty, on Tuesday issued a statement explaining his intention behind the project and apologised to “anyone who felt offended and hurt”. The photos, shared on the World Press Photo’s Instagram account on Sunday, were set in villages in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. A series of poor people, including children, were photographed in front of a table of food, with their hands covering their faces. In the caption, Mamo said he had “brought...a table and some fake food, and...told people to dream about some food that they would like to find on their table”. There was a strong backlash against the photographs on social media, including from photojournalists, with many contending that Mamo’s depiction of poverty was exploitative and built on stereotypes about India. Mamo, who had won a World Press Photo of the Year Award this year, had been handling the foundation’s Instagram account for a week. He clarified that the photo series had not been commissioned by World Press Photo Foundation and was an independent project. In his statement, Mamo said that the idea was to highlight the wastage of food in the West. “The only goal of the concept was to let western people think, in a provocative way, about the waste of food,” he said. “Maybe it did not work at all, maybe I did it in the wrong way, but I worked honestly and respectfully with all the people involved. I only had the intention to let people think about this issue.”

Congress’ Alwar MP Highlights ‘Bitter Truth’ After Speaker Denies Opportunity to Speak in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: There are plenty of “bitter truths” that Congress MP from Alwar Karan Singh Yadav is dealing with in the wake of another lynching from his constituency in Rajasthan. Yadav has alleged that the latest Alwar incident was the fourth in the state where gau rakshaks were behind an attack. “This is the fourth incident in less than two years, after Pehlu Khan,” he said. Unhappy at the fact that he didn’t get enough time to speak on the issue in the Lok Sabha, the MP said, “The state machinery is polarised, vigilantes are glamourised with garlands, there are miscreants everywhere. I wanted to raise the point in the House, but unfortunately, there weren’t enough opportunities.” He accused the Speaker of being biased and cited it as a reason for him

not getting enough time to speak on Alwar lynching issue. “These are the bitter facts. Especially in such issues, more time should be given. I wanted to raise this elaborately but the Speaker was not kind to me, I suspect ideological reasons. She (Speaker) comes from a certain ideology, and has soft corner for those who share that ideology. We cannot expect everyone to be like Somnath Chatterjee. She could have given more time in the House.” Yadav alleged that Ramgarh too suffers from ideological

polarisation. “You have people walking with two cows, and next you see they are lynched. This area Ramgarh, which is equally divided into Hindus and Muslims, has ideological problems which is why incidents like Rakbar Khan happen,” he said. “The victims were thrashed in police station. They were abused. This amounts to custodial death. Police and cow vigilantes are in hand-inglove. If cow smuggling, or slaughter is a problem then strengthen the laws, why allow and patronise people taking law in their hands,” said Yadav.

New Delhi: A day after PNB fraud accused Mehul Choksi was traced to Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean islands, persons familiar with the developments said investigating agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate, were informed about his whereabouts at the last moment. Gitanjali Gems promoter Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are at the centre of the $2 billion fraud at Punjab National Bank (PNB). “The ministry of external affairs (MEA) had been pursuing the matter with the United States government and the latter had informed that Choksi was not in the US. After he was traced to Antigua, the MEA had sent the letter to both the Central Bureau

of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday about Choksi’s whereabouts,” said a person familiar with the developments. The MEA did not immediately respond to Mint’s calls and messages seeking a response. On Tuesday, Choksi was traced to Antigua, after he had secured a local passport—a move that has now thwarted chances of Indian investigating agencies closing in on him. According to the

citizenship rules of Antigua and Barbuda, Choksi was required to make a contribution to the National Development Fund (NDF) of a minimum non-refundable amount of $200,000, or an investment of at least $400,000 into one of the approved real estate projects to be held for a minimum period of five years, or an investment of a minimum of $1,500,000 directly into an eligible business as a sole investor.
