NEWS BRIEF MSU not ready to host convocation on Teachers’ Day SS News | Vadodara

Blame it on its lackadaisical attitude or simple lack of planning, M S University will not be able to hold its annual convocation on September 5 this year. It was last year that the university’s syndicate body had resolved that the university will hold its annual convocation on September 5 every year to mark Teacher’s Day . The syndicate’s resolution itself had come after the university had come under criticism for not planning properly for the convocation which is the one of the most important academic ceremony for graduating students, especially the meritorious lot. Don’t deny minor rape survivors nod to abort: SC Agency | New Delhi

The Supreme Court on Friday said that minor rape victims should not be forced to knock on the doors of a court for getting permission to terminate pregnancies arising out of sexual offence and favoured setting up of a trust for the benefit of Chandigarh-based 10-year-old rape survivor who recently delivered a child after being denied abortion. A bench of Justices Madan BLokur and Deepak Gupta said that crucial time got wasted in court proceedings and it became too late and risky to allow the rape survivor to abort forcing her to deliver the child. The court said.

30 people have died so far in the aftermath of the dera chief Ram Rahim’s conviction. Restrictions have been put in parts of Punjab and Haryana. Section 144 has been imposed in 11 districts of Delhi

of rape. Press reports from the northern state of Haryana said police fired tear gas and water cannon when violence broke out as tens of thousands of followers of guru Ram Rahim Singh had descended on Panchkula, where India’s federal investigations agency had set up a special court to rule on the charge that he had raped two female devotees. Indian news channels showed vehicles and a bus set on fire in New

Delhi, while at least one Rewa Express train was also torched at Anand Bihar station in the capital. Meanwhile, the Northern Railways announced they plan to cancel or divert 236 trains due to the protests. Singh has a vast following in the northern state of Haryana, where he runs a spiritual movement that claims to have millions of devotees around the world. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly con-

demned the violence on Friday, and told his 33.2 million Twitter followers: “The instances of violce today are deeply distressing.” Before the court issued the verdict, troops and riot police had been deployed, but violence broke out as news of his conviction spread among the gathered devotees. An AFP reporter saw police fire tear gas and water cannon into a crowd of protesters who

Cow carcass found; mob loots UP village, attacks people Agency | Meerut

A mob comprising “hundreds of men“ stormed a Bulandshahr village after a cow’s carcass was found floating in a pond on Friday morning. The men, said to be villagers of Adauli, around 10 km from Bulandshahr city , “attacked every soul they spotted and vandalised scores of houses“. They also ransacked two places of worship that belong to a particular community. A villager, who requested that he not be named, said, “Many houses were looted, and two of our

The number of reported violence-related deaths vary from 23 to 31, and the victims are believed to be Ram Rahim’s followers, more than 200,000 of whom had flocked to the Chandigarh area ahead of Friday’s verdict. There were also unconfirmed reports of police firing into the air to disperse the crowd.

Social media seems to be an integral part of the Modi government’s outreach programme. From a mandatory Twitter presence for all ministries to hiring professional agencies to manage social media communications, the government is serious about getting its message across. This has emerged from a series of RTI applications to 56 central ministries to find out their social media presence and whether private consultants or professional agencies were hired to handle their Twitter and Facebook accounts. The information showed that almost all Twitter and Facebook accounts across

ministries, barring external affairs, information & broadcasting and tourism, were opened between June and December 2014, soon after the Modi government came to power in May 2014. All ministries, except civil aviation and micro, small & medium enterprises, replied that they had Twitter and Facebook accounts. The information showed that since 2016, the government increasingly took professional help -either

hiring agencies or private consultants -to handle the accounts. Ministries that took professional help include home, I&B, food processing, tourism, housing & urban affairs, Niti Aayog, drinking water & sanitation, Ayush, WCD and environment, forests & climate change. The ministry of housing and urban affairs employed a firm named Quantum for a contract worth Rs 7 crore for three years.

Forces seemed unprepared to tackle violence

At least 31 Dera Sacha Sauda followers were killed and more than 300 injured in an hour of violence after cops and paramilitary forces fired on angry mobs, shortly after the verdict con victing Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of rape at 2.30pm on Friday. While 28 were killed in Panchkula, three Dera supporters were killed in Sirsa, the head quarters of the cult. Fifteen years after he was accused of raping his sadhvis, Gurmeet was held guilty of the crime by special CBI judge Jagdeep Singh. The quantum of sentence would be pronounced on Monday after hearing the CBI and Dera’s counsel.Gurmeet faces a minimum of seven years in jail, the maximum punishment being life term. This was the third major instance of the Manohar Lal Khattar government’s failure in controlling law and order in Haryana after forming the first-ever majority BJP government in the state in 2016. At least six people were killed when police entered preacher Rampal’s ashram in Hisar to arrest him and produce him in the high court in a contempt case in November 2014, a month after the Khattar government took charge. Then, in February 2016, 30 people were killed in the Jat reservation protests across Haryana. Shockingly , while 30 people were killed over three days during the reservation protests, in Panchkula, nearly as many were killed in just an hour on Friday , indicating the intensity of the violence as well as police’s reaction. Doctors at government hospitals in Panchkula and Chandigarh said the death toll could rise as many of the injured are in serious condition. The moment the verdict came and word of it spread among the followers, they unleashed a well-planned attack. They had even separated the men from women before news of the verdict reached them. Sources said the government gave orders to fire at the rioters after Panchkula deputy commissioner Gauri Prashar found herself surrounded by an angry mob in Sector 5. Most of those killed were in the adjoining Sectors 3 and 4, where most of the violence took place. Dera followers in Punjab’s Malwa region also went on the rampage after the conviction. Curfew was imposed in Patiala, Sangrur, Bathinda, Mansa, Faridkot, Fazilka and Ferozepur districts in Malwa where the Dera has a huge following. The followers targeted government service centres in many villages of Bathinda.

A Gentleman movie review

This latest outing by Raj and DK is a spy spoof cum thriller cum love story, and while the going is good, it’s not bad. But you have to wait the no-go bits out, and in the two hour and some run time, there are too many of those about. Sidharth Malhotra who helms this enterprise plays a good guy who can also be bad. Now while the handsome Malhotra is perfectly pitched as the ‘sundar’ and ‘susheel’ fella of the title, he isn’t quite as convincing in his ‘risky’ avatar.

The action moves from splashy Miami to grungy Mumbai, and we see Malhotra swing from being a lawabiding home-owner who drives under the speed limit to a sharp-shooter who kills under orders. Accompanying Malhotra is Fernandez playing a good-looking, goodnatured ditz. There’s also a crooked defence minister, a bent spy-meister, a middle-aged couple looking for a suitable groom for their daughter.

Hollywood-Bollywood Kajal Aggarwal will be the ‘Queen’ of south Vivegam actor Kajal Aggarwal confirmed that she will be doing the remake of hit film, Queen Agency | New Delhi

Kajal Aggarwal, who has been a part of consecutive box office successes, recently with Nene Raju Nene Mantri and then Vivegam has now confirmed that she will be working on the remake of the hit Bollywood film Queen. The actor has promised that she will be making the movie keeping the southern sensibilities in mind. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted and wrote, “@MsKajalAggarwal confirms doing #Queen Tamil remake.. The makers are planning to make changes and She is planning to add her own touch..” We wonder how Kajal Aggarwal would fit in the shoes of Kangana Ranaut, who played the role of Rani in the original film. Also, one must think of

the audience too. Queen was lauded by critics and audience alike. So, the film might face the same fate as Premam remake did in Tollywood. This project also happens to be taking off after many hurdles as initially, Tamannaah Bhatia was supposed to take up the role. It was later said that Amala Paul would be doing the film, however, in a previous interview with indianexpress.com Amala had said that though she was approached for the film, they couldn’t match dates. So finally, Kajal Aggarwal will be seen playing the role of a timid girl, who sets out to explore the world and in turn, finds herself! Other than this, Kajal Aggarwal will also be seen alongside Vijay in his upcoming film Mersal, which is slated for Diwali release. She will also be seen in Telugu films MLA and Raju Gari Gadhi 2. The actor is busy with big ticket movies currently in both Kollywood and Tollywood.

Bigg Boss Oviya’s punchline now a song to be crooned by Anirudh Ravichander Agency | New Delhi

Bigg Boss Oviya’s popular punchline “Neenga Shut Up Pannunga” is going to be a song in the upcoming film Balloon starring Jai and Anjali in lead roles. While music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja will be scoring the music, Anirudh Ravichander will lend his voice for the song. Talking about the song, the movie’s director Sinish said, “I believe in marketing the film as much as I believe in content. Today’s scenario demands high decibel marketing. The best way to achieve this to bring out the best of combinations that keeps the interest level of the audience high.” He further added, “When lyricist Arun Raja Kamaraja and I were discussing on some novel idea for a song, Oviya’s popular phrase “Neenga shut up pannunga” came to mind. We discussed the idea with Yuvan Shankar Raja too who immediately agreed.

Love is poetry. To fall in love with a person is like understanding a deep, moving poem. Noticing every little detail. To see what the poet shows, to smell what he describes and the urge to taste the intangible. Love, like poems, knows no boundaries. Religions, race, distance not even age can restrict someone from falling in love.My recommendation this week is Jung Jiwoo’s 2 hour and 9 minutes South Korean film Eungyo (The muse) available on Netflix. A reclusive poet of about seventy feels the fire of his youth when a schoolgirl Eungyo enters his life, but his star assistant opposes his romantic gestures towards the teenager. adaptation of celebrated author Park Bum-shin’s novel Eun-gyo. The film starts Lee Joek-yo (Park Hae-ji) a highly respected and awarded poet of South Korea living a reclusive life in

his secluded home, hidden away from the city. He lives by himself. His assistant Seo Ji-woo (Kim Mu-yeol) a star author, whose maiden genre novel becomes a bestseller, visits him.

Taylor Swift’s first single from her upcoming album Reputation titled “Look What You Made Me Do” is here and it is sure to become a crowd favourite in no time. The song is dark and Taylor has

emulated a sensuous tone, which adds a great depth to the number. The lyrics of the song also hints at changes to Taylor Swift’s personality. Her lines, “I got a list of names and yours is in Red, underlined,” takes one back to

Deathnote (if you are a fan that is). What must be said though is that this song is something new. The music expresses the change in an individual after a betrayal. In this sense, the song is a signature Taylor Swift number.

India won the second of the five-match ODI series by 3 wickets against Sri Lanka in Kandy as MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar rescued the visitors after they were reduced to 131/7 while chasing 231 in 47 overs. Earlier, India were off to a flying start to their chase by the openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. The left-right batting combination notched up a total of 109 runs at Pallekele in second ODI of the five-match series. Chasing the modest target, Rohit ended his run-drought

MS Dhoni, Bhuvneshwar Kumar help India top Akila Dananjaya’s 6 for 54 in Sri Lanka to score a half-century while Dhawan continued his incredible run on the tour to score 49. With the kind of batting display that was being put forward by the Indian openers, Sri Lanka captain introduced spinner Akila Dananjaya and the leggie didn’t disappoint his skipper. Dananjaya provided the hosts with their first

breakthrough after trapping Sharma in front of the stumps for 54. The right-handed batsman did ask to review the on-field decision but it didn’t change the umpire’s call. Dhawan’s stay at the crease after Sharma’s dismissal became a brief one as he too departed for 49 after Mathews took a blinder off Siriwardana.

MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar came to the rescue of the Indian side against Sri Lanka in the second ODI of the fivematch series when the two compiled an unbeaten partnership of 100 runs, helping India win the match by 3 wickets in Kandy. Kumar went on to score a half-century while Dhoni remained not out on 45. India were handed a target of 231 runs in 47 overs after rain delayed the start of their innings. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma provided the visitors with

perfect start as they scored 109 runs for the first wicket before Sharma was sent back by Akila Dananjaya for 54. Dhawan was soon sent back in the hut after he tried to sweep a delivery from Siriwardana over fine leg but failed to clear the 30-yard circle. Mathews who was standing at shortfine leg region ran to his left and grabbed

The three matches are scheduled to take place on 12, 13 and 15 September respectively at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. The threematch T20 series is being looked as an attempt to revive international cricket in Pakistan as the nation was barred from hosting matches after an attack on Sri Lankan cricket team by gunmen during their tour in 2009. The Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) on Thursday appointed former India opening batsman Shiv Sundar Das as the coach of the state’s senior and Ranji team. Das replaced former India fast bowler Debasish Mohanty as the coach. Mohanty was the coach of state cricket team since January 2011 after succeeding Australia’s Michael Bevan. Sources said Mohanty had desired to leave the

post reportedly for personal reasons. Das has represented India in 23 Test matches and scored 1,326 runs at an average of 38.91. The OCA at its working committee meeting held at Cuttack yesterday also appointed Suresh Kumar, Kulamani Parida and Subrat Behera as coaches of the state’s Under-23, Under-19 and Under-16 men’s cricket teams, respectively. Similarly, Rashmita Mohanty has been appointed as the coach for women

senior and U-23 team and Itishree Pattnaik as the coach of women U-19 team, said an official of the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA). Bishnudev Mohanty took over as the chairman of the selection committee for Ranji and U-22 teams while Deepak Mangaraj will serve as the chairman of the committee for junior U-19 and U-16 teams. Bidhan Chandra Rout has been appointed as the chairman of women’s selection committee, an OCA release said.

The Pakistan selection Committee, which is headed by former skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq, selected the 16-member squad for the Independence Cup against World XI which is scheduled to begin from September 12 2017 in Lahore. “The team has been selected keeping in mind the conditions and the recent performances of some players in

The previous broadcasting rights of the IPL were held by Sony Pictures Network India with Star India owning the digital rights. It allowed them to broadcast the IPL content on its Hotstar property. Both the rights ex-

Initially, 18 companies were in contention with the bids scheduled to be opened on October 25 last year. However, intervention from the Supreme Court forced the BCCI into postponing things. The plans were once again back on track this year after court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) allowed the bidding to open once again in July 17.
