ENGLISH DAILY MORNING REPUTED NEWS PAPER, AHMEDABAD EDITION Editor : Kapilkumar M. Hirpara

Short News National Herald: Swamy accuses Congress’ Motilal Vora of wasting court’s time New Delhi : BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Saturday accused senior Congress leader Motilal Vora of wasting the court’s time by filing frivolous applications in the National Herald case and urged it to reject Vora’s plea seeking to restrain him from sharing case related information on social media. Swamy has filed the case against Vora, Rahul Gandhi, his mother Sonia Gandhi and others. In an application moved before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal, Vora said he has “time and again noticed that the complainant (Swamy) has been putting up various posts on social media regarding the daily proceedings of the instant case for the purpose of causing defamation of the accused and vilification of the court process”.

Karnataka: Row over Nirmala Sitharaman’s itinerary for visit to flood-hit Kodagu Madikeri : Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Karnataka Minister Sa Ra Mahesh were Friday, locked in an exchange of words over her itinerary during a visit to the flood-hit Kodagu district. The entire episode took place in the presence of officials and the media at the district commissioner’s office here. Sitharaman was interacting with a group of affected people here when Mashesh, the district in-charge minister, told her that officials were waiting for her for a review meeting and they have to go for rehabilitation work. He said she can first address the officials to which Sitharaman too agreed. However, Sitharaman noted that she was only going by the minute-by-minute programme drawn up for her visit and she had been following the minister in-charge and the itinerary. “I follow the minister in charge. Central minister follows the minister in charge here. Unbelievable! You have a list of minute-to-minute for me to follow…I am doing as per your schedule,” she said.

The Navy has been pressing the government to procure the 111 utility and 123 multi-role helicopters to strengthen its existing capability and replace its ageing fleet of copters.

Boost for Navy as govt clears procurement of 111 choppers worth Rs 21,000 crore

New Delhi : Giving a fillip to the Navy, the Ministry of Defence Saturday gave its nod to the procurement of 111 utility helicopters for the maritime forces at a cost of over Rs 21,000 crore. Officials said the ministry also cleared acquisition proposals worth nearly Rs 46,000 crore, including the acquisition of the helicopters. “The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), in a landmark decision today, approved procurement of 111 Utility Helicopters for the Indian Navy at a cost of over Rs 21,000 crore,” the Defence Ministry said. The procurement of the helicopters is the first project under the government’s ambitious strategic partnership (SP) model which ropes in private firms to build select military platforms in India, in partnership with foreign defence manufacturers. The choppers will be used in attack missions besides search, rescue and surveillance operations. The decision was taken at a

meeting of the DAC, which is considered to be the ministry’s highest decisionmaking body on procurement. Besides this, the official said the DAC also gave its approval to a few other procurement

proposals amounting to approximately Rs 24,879.16 crore. This included approval for the acquisition of 150 indigenously designed and developed 155 mm advanced towed artillery guns systems for the Army

at an approximate cost of Rs 3,364 crores. These guns have been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and will be manufactured by production agencies, as nominated by DRDO. The council also cleared the procurement of 24 naval multi-role helicopters (NMRH) that can be engaged in anti-submarine warfare. The MRHs are an integral part of the frontline warships like the aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and corvettes. The Navy has been pressing the government to procure the 111 utility and 123 multi-role helicopters to strengthen its existing capability and replace its ageing fleet of copters. In August last year, the Indian Navy had issued a global request for information (RFI) for procurement of 111 utility and 123 multi-role helicopters. The government had issued an RFI for it in 2011 as well as in 2013.

Kodagu row: MoD says Karnataka minister’s remarks Mehul Choksi passport: Mumbai Police gives clean chit to cops who cleared verification against Sitharaman ‘lowered dignity of Rajya Sabha’

New Delhi : A day after Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman triggered a row after lashing out at a Karnataka minister during a presser, the Defence Ministry Saturday blamed the state minister for the incident and said that the latter’s remarks have “lowered the dignity of the Rajya Sabha”. On Friday, Sitharaman, a Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka, visited flood-ravaged Kodagu district to review relief operations by the defence forces. She reacted furiously when Karnataka Minister Sa Ra Mahesh suggested to her to wind up the press interaction as a number of government officials were waiting for a meeting with her. “I am following a minute-tominute programme, minister. I do not violate that. If officials are important, my parivaar (family) is also

equally important. I follow the minister-in-charge. Central minister follows the minister in-charge here. Unbelievable,” she told Mahesh, who was sitting next to her. “You have a list of minute-to-minute programme for me to follow. If you did have a difference of opinion, you should have sorted it out before,” Sitharaman said. Issuing a clarification on the incident, the Defence Ministry questioned the state minister’s conduct. “On completion of the field visits, as per the programme, the defence minister was interacting with ex-servicemen who had been adversely affected by the floods, when the district in-charge minister objected and insisted that meeting with the officials be conducted first,” it said.

Interestingly, the Congress leader had earlier said that he was ready to become the next prime minister if the party emerged as the largest single party in the 2019 general elections.

Rahul Gandhi in London: Don’t have prime ministerial visions, fighting ideological battle

Unnao case: Body of murder witness exhumed amid protests

Lucknow : The Unnao district administration on Saturday began the process of exhuming the body of 32-year-old Yunus Khan, a witness in the murder case of the father of a teenage girl raped in the district last year. A heavy police force was deployed in Makhi area as Khan’s family had opposed the exhumation claiming it was against Sharia law, and had protested with other local residents earlier in the day. Unnao SP Harish Kumar had sought permission from the district magistrate for exhumation on Friday on the basis of an inquiry report by Circle Officer, Safipur (Unnao), Vipin Ranjan Rai. Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Hasanganj (Unnao), Suraj Kumar Yadav said, “We tried our best to convince the family, but they did not agree. We also called the shahar qazi to convince them, but he too failed in his attempt. Since it was essential to exhume the body, we started the process in the evening in the presence of the shahar qazi to ensure that all rituals are followed under Sharia law.” “No family members of Yunus were present,” Kumar said, adding that the body would be sent for an autopsy. Khan, who used to run a grocery shop, had died on August 18. His family had buried the body without informing the CBI, which is probing the murder case of the rape victim’s father.

New Delhi : Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said he does not see himself as the next prime minister of India but someone who is “fighting an ideological battle”. The Congress chief was asked if he has any vision of becoming the next PM during an interaction with the Indian Journalists’ Association in London on the last day of his European tour. To this, Rahul replied,

“I don’t have these visions. I view myself as fighting an ideological battle and this change has come to me after 2014. I realised that there’s a risk to Indian state, to the Indian way of doing things and I’m defending that.” Interestingly, the Congress leader had earlier said that he was ready to become the next prime minister if the party emerged as the largest single party in the 2019 general elections.

Gauri Lankesh murder case: Maharashtra accused ‘pops up’ in footage New Delhi : The Karnataka Police claims to have found that one of those arrested by the Maharashtra ATS in connection with plotting terror attacks in the state was present in the vicinity of journalist Gauri Lankesh’s home on the day she was murdered, nearly a year ago. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Karnataka Police, probing

the September 5, 2017, murder, recently returned to CCTV footage from cameras located near Lankesh’s home, in Raja Rajeshwari Nagar area of Bengaluru, and reportedly found that a man resembling Sudhanva Gondhalekar was present there four hours before the killing. Mumbai : In a recent report to Maharashtra Home Department, Mumbai Police has given a clean chit to policemen of the Malabar Hill Police station who issued a police verification report on fugitive jeweller Mehul Choksi, wanted in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud. Antigua and Barbuda had said Choksi was granted citizenship based on a police clearance certificate (PCC) issued by Regional Passport Office (RPO), Mumbai, and documents received from Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in May 2017.

Following this, the government came under attack for what was pointed out as shortcomings in the online police verification system adopted by state police department.

Malnutrition, poor education hit Odisha’s development: NITI

Bhubaneshwar : The pace of development has been hit in Odisha owing to social exclusion, malnutrition and fall in education quality, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said Saturday. “Social exclusion, malnutrition and degradation in quality education are the major challenges and break the speed of development process,” Kumar said at the inauguration of the three-day ‘Odisha Vikash Conclave-2018’ in Bhubaneshwar. Grassroot level development

needs inclusion of all the stakeholders like civil society organizations, policy makers, government officials, academia and community-based organizations, Kumar said. Noting that four

out of 10 children in the state are undernourished and suffer from mental disorder, he said the major cause of this situation is lack of adequate nutrition and balanced diet, unhealthy environment and unhygienic practices.

How to prevent winner-takes-all democracy

Democracy is in crisis. Fake news—and fake allegations of fake news—now plagues civil discourse, and political parties have proved increasingly willing to use xenophobia and other malign strategies to win elections. At the same time, powers like Vladimir Putin’s Russia have been stepping up their efforts to interfere in elections across the West. Rarely has the US witnessed such brazen attacks on its political system; and rarely has the world seen such lows during peacetime. And yet, democracy’s crisis is not completely new. When I was a student in Delhi in the early 1970s, it was commonly assumed that the US “participated” in Indian elections. Then, as now, rumours circulating through informal communication channels made it hard for ordinary citizens to tell fact from fiction. The joke— which was not always a joke—was that if you suspected someone of being a CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) agent, you should immediately phone the local Indian intelligence office, but you should not be surprised if the same person answered the phone. That said, events today have risen to a different level. The UK will soon leave the European Union, with or without a formal exit agreement. And the US is waging an escalating trade war, which could be followed by a debilitating currency war. How can all of this be happening in democracies, and what can be done about it? On the first question, one hypothesis is that new digital technologies are changing the incentives for corporations, political parties, and other major institutions. Consider the case of corporations. The wealth of proprietary data on consumer preferences and behaviour is producing such massive returns to scale that a few giants are monopolizing markets. Electoral democracy is drifting in the same direction. The benefits of winning an election have become so large that political parties will stoop to new lows to clinch a victory. And, as with corporations, they can do so with the help of data on electoral preferences and behaviour, and with new strategies to target key constituencies. This poses a dilemma for wellmeaning democratic parties and politicians. If a “bad” party is willing to foment hate and racism to bolster its chances of winning, what is a “good” party to do? If it sticks to its principles, it could end up ceding victory to the “bad” party, which will do even more harm once it is in office. A “good” party may thus try to forestall that outcome by taking a step down the moral ladder, precipitating a race to the bottom. This is the problem with any winnertakes-all game. When second place confers no benefits, the cost of showing unilateral restraint can grow intolerably high.

I like stories being real.” The original Arjun Reddy, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, featured Vijay Deverakonda in the titular role. All I look for in a film is a good story and role. I haven’t chosen the films that I will be doing. The makers thought I was apt for these films. Right now I do not have the time to do anything other than fulfilling my film commitments. Once I am done with it, I am ok to do anything that is exciting and challenging on any medium as my main job as an actor is to act.” Though she has over nine years of experience on the small screen, Mouni still felt like a beginner when she started working on Gold. “My experience on TV taught me a lot about work ethics and being a disciplined actor. India to play friendly match against Sydney FC

Hanuma Vihari: Hyderabad’s another ‘very, very special’

New Delhi : French Tennis Federation (FFT), organisers of the grand slam French Open, have banned the controversial catsuit that Serena Williams wore this past year. In her first grand slam tournament back after the birth of her daughter, Serena wore an eye-catching black catsuit under searing Paris heat to make heads turn. However, at the time, the organisers didn’t come down heavily on the clothing wear but have now stated that it was “going too far.” She had described the body hugging outfit as inspired by the ‘Black Panther’ movie and made her feel like a ‘warrior princess’. Further, she insisted it helped her prevent a return of the blood clots which put her life in danger after giving birth last year. However, the

French Tennis Federation (FFT) insist that the outfit or anything similar will not be welcome at the Roland Garros in 2019. “I really believe that sometimes we have gone too far,” FFT president Bernard Giudicelli told Tennis Magazine in remarks reported by French media. “The outfit of Serena this year, for example, will no longer be accepted. You have to respect the game and the place. Everyone wants to enjoy the showcase.” Giudicelli said that there will be “certain limits” on clothing for the 2019 French Open although he admitted it may be difficult to be too hard line. “For 2019, it’s a little late because the collections are already designed, but we will still ask the equipment manufacturers to communicate them to us,” he said.

Mumbai : WHEN HANUMA Vihari was 9, his father took him to the Gymkhana ground in Hyderabad to watch Ambati Rayudu bat. There they saw Rayudu pull off an exquisite on-drive, a shot that Satyanarayana would challenge his son to master and reproduce. The young Vihari would take it on too and spend the next two days practicing nothing but the on-drive at a local maidaan, and then impress his father with

his rendition of it. His mother, Vijayalakshmi, even recalls the boy leaving their home by himself and walking some 5-6 km to the Gymkhana ground a few days later, just to see Rayudu bat and maybe compare their on-drives. It wouldn’t take long for Vihari to start holding court at that very Gymkhana ground with bat in hand, and play not just the on-drive but an assortment of easy-onthe-eye strokes.

New Delhi : The Indian football team will face a tough test when it takes on defending A-League Premier Champions Sydney FC in a friendly match on August 28 as part of its exposure tour of Australia. India are also scheduled to play APIA Leichhardt Tigers FC and Rydalmere Lions FC on August 25 and 31 respectively. “Sydney FC are the current A-League Premiers Champion and the best-performing club over the last 3 years. It will be a huge test for us and we are ready for that,” India head coach Constantine said. The Sydney-based outfit finished their A-League campaign with a handsome 14-point lead over Newcastle Jets, who were second in the points table in the

2017-18 A-League season. Reflecting on the other two opponents, Constantine said: “We are scheduled to play against APIA Leichhardt tomorrow and they have been on a decent run recently. They beat Melbourne Victory in a cup match earlier this week and we’re getting ready for a taxing game. “Our last game is against another NPL team Rydalmere Lions FC who have also made the right noises last season. Both of the teams would feature a mix of U-20 and Senior Team boys.” While APIA Leichhardt Tigers FC are the reigning National Premier Leagues NSW premiers champion, Rydalmere Lions FC have been promoted to NSW NPL2 after finishing at the top of NSW NPL 3 last season.

Pakistan deserve to be labelled favourites in ICC World Cup 2019: Fakhar Zaman New Delhi : Explosive Pakistan opening batsman Fakhar Zaman believes that the tag of ‘favourites’ or the 2019 ICC World Cup suits Pakistan. According to Zaman, who recently became Pakistan’s first double centurion, Pakistan’s success in last year’s Champions Trophy in the United Kingdom could be a sign of what’s to come next June and July. Stating that combination of the current Pakistan side is well balanced, the southpaw maintained that his

focus right now is on the upcoming Asia Cup. “I do feel that it is right for us to be labelled favourites for the 2019 World Cup as our team will be well equipped for this tournament. The current Pakistan team combination is brilliant and the results we have recently produced are good proof of that. We will travel to England to win the title and not just to make up the numbers,” Zaman told Sky Sports. However, Zaman has his sights focused

on the next month’s Asia cup featuring India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and an as yet undecided qualifier along with Pakistan. “At the moment, I am fully focused on doing well in the upcoming Asia Cup,” Zaman said before adding, “Of course, the 2019 World Cup is an important tournament, but it’s far too early for me to start planning for it as there are other international assignments to take care of before that tournament.

Fakhar Zaman believes Pakistan’s success in last year’s Champions Trophy could be a sign of things to come in the ICC World Cup 2019.

The statement by the Foreign Ministry in Seoul came hours after President Donald Trump directed Pompeo to delay his trip because of what he saw as a lack of progress on nuclear disarmament talks with the North. Trump also said the nuclear negotiations with North Korea have been hampered by the lack of support from China, the North’s only major ally that’s engaged in an intensifying trade dispute with the United States. While describing the delayed trip as a setback, the ministry said it would be most important for the allies to pursue “substantial progress” on denuclearization.

Russian peace talks raise specter of shifting influence in Afghanistan

Islamabad : Vladimir Putin’s Russia appears to have emerged as a player in Afghanistan after 17 years of Western involvement that has left the country no closer to peace than before. To some, Russia’s offer to host talks next month might contain at least the seeds of a positive pivot if the Taliban are coaxed to the table at a time when they have been more aggressive on the battlefield than in recent years, causing much mayhem in Kabul and other cities. But the move may be stuck before it even begins. The Afghan government has said it will not attend, unable to agree on a coherent strategy because of divisions within the government that many see as a function of personal and ethnic rivalries, and calling for the Taliban to first agree to direct talks with Kabul. The insurgents have consistently refused, instead demanding direct talks with the United States.
