Short News Ram temple construction not a political issue: Devendra Fadnavis Mumbai : Ram temple is not a political issue, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Sunday and expressed hope that Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, who is in Ayodhya, would get the blessings of Lord Ram. A senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader also said that the Sena, which is its ally at the Centre and in Maharashtra, will remain its partner for the Maharashtra and the Lok Sabha polls due next year. Thackeray, who offered prayers at the Ram Lalla temple in Ayodhya on Sunday, said the BJP government at the Centre “may not last” if Ram temple is not constructed in the Uttar Pradesh city, and demanded that an ordinance be brought to pave for its way. “The construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya is not a political issue.

West Bengal CPI unit not to participate in TMC Jan 19 rally

Kolkata : The CPI West Bengal unit Sunday said that it would not participate in the January 19 mega rally called by the Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to oust the BJP in the next general election. The West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has called for the mega rally of all antiBJP parties in Kolkata on January 19. “We appreciate that she has forwarded her invitation (for the January 19 Brigade Rally). But the state CPI has decided not to participate in it,” CPI state secretary Swapan Banerjee told reporters here. He said that though the party’s national executive would take a final decision in connection with the matter, the state body has already decided not to go to be a part of the TMC’s mega rally. He also questioned (Mamata) Banerjee’s real intention to fight the BJP in the next general elections saying that “on one side the TMC supremo is inviting the CPI but on another side, it is attacking the Left parties”. “On one side Mamata is inviting CPI but attacking left parties, occupying party offices preventing filing nominations,” the CPI state secretary alleged.

Uddhav said the BJP should not rake up the Ram temple issue while canvassing for polls if it has to leave the matter to the court for judgment. He said the BJP should apologise and admit that their promise was a “chunavi jumla”.

BJP could lose power if Ram temple isn’t built: Uddhav Ayodhya : After visiting the makeshift Ram temple in Ayodhya, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday warned the BJP-led government that it could lose power if it does not build the temple. Uddhav said the BJP should not rake up the Ram temple issue while canvassing for polls if it has to leave the matter to the court for judgment. He said the BJP should apologise and admit that their promise was a “chunavi jumla”. Speaking to mediapersons after a visit to the makeshift Ram temple, Uddhav said the BJP had, in its election manifesto in the past, promised to explore all possibilities within the limits of the Constitution. “How many options have been explored in the past four years…have you not found a single possibility in these

years to build the Ram temple… Till when will we keep searching for possibilities,” he asked. The Shiv Sena chief said it is often remarked that the Ram temple issue is only raised at the time of elections. “Chunav ke prachar ke dauran sab Ram-Ram karte hain aur chunav ke baad aaraam karte hain (They invoke Ram during the election campaign and relax once the polls are over),” he said. Uddhav said that the present government at the Centre is strong (in terms of numbers) and asked that if this government does not build the temple, which government will do. Saying that a few days are left for the polls, he said, “Mandir to hoga hi hoga…lekin agar ye sarkar mandir nahi banayegi to shayad ye sarkar nahi banegi.

Ayodhya event aimed at diverting attention from BJP’s failures: Akhilesh Yadav

Lucknow : Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said Sunday the “joint show” of the VHP, the RSS, the BJP and other organisations in Ayodhya for the construction of Ram temple was intended to divert attention from alleged failures of the ruling dispensation in curbing blackmoney and in creating enough employment. “I want to thank people of state and the country for not taking the joint show of VHP, RSS, BJP and other organisations in Ayodhya seriously. It was organised to divert attention from failures of the BJP. The party failed on issues like blackmoney, unemployment, problems of farmers and women and now flaring up communal sentiments,” Akhilesh said in a statement issued here. He alleged that the BJP “did not” fulfil promises made in its 2014 manifesto. “Deviating from issues is political dishonesty and corruption. Contrary to BJP, SP did all possible for development of the state,” the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister added.

New Delhi : Raising the pitch for the building of Ram Temple in Ayodhya, RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat Sunday said that the NDA government should immediately bring a law for its construction if the issue was not on the priority list of the Supreme Court, ANI reported. Addressing a ‘Jan Hunkar’ rally at Nagpur, Bhagwat said it had also been proved that the temple was there and therefore the apex court should deliver the verdict on the matter swiftly. “However, the court is not giving priority to the case. Justice delayed is

justice denied,” he added. “If the top court, either due to lack of time or due to its inability to understand the sentiments of the public, is failing to give priority to the case, it is up to the government to quickly bring a law for the construction of the temple,” Bhagwat said at the rally. Meanwhile, tensions flared high in Ayodhya as the ‘Dharma Sabha’ organised by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) commenced in the temple town on Sunday to drum up support for the construction of a Ram temple.

VHP event in Ayodhya: Students choose temple movement over job

Ayodhya : Amit Pratap, a 26-yearold MBA student from Jaunpur, travelled nearly 160 km by bus to attend the VHP’s Dharma Sabha in Ayodhya on Sunday. He said if asked to choose between Ram temple and a job, he will prefer to work for the Ram Janmabhoomi movement than build a career in business management. The Sangh Parivar’s apparent attempt to garner support of youth on the Ram Janmabhoomi issue through the Dharma Sabha appeared to be largely successful with a sizeable number of youngsters in the gathering. “Dharma protects those who uphold or protect dharma. I am a Hindu and for the protection of Hindu dharma, building of Ram temple in Ayodhya is essential. To achieve that goal, Hindus have to show strength before the judiciary and the government. For that purpose, I have come here,” said Amit as he listened to the speeches

of sants and noted down what he liked in a pocket diary. Amit said his father ran a business of construction material, earning enough for the family. “After completing MBA next year, I may look for a job if my family insists on that. But if a moment comes when I have to decide between a movement for Ram temple and a job, I will

prefer the former. It is shameful for us that Ram’s temple is not at his birthplace,” Amit said. Among others who attended the meet were two “bal swayamsevaks” — Amit Singh and Abhay Kumar — from Fatehpur. The two 16-year-olds have the same plans. The class XI students had undergone the RSS’s Initial Training Camp this year.

Congress threatened SC judges, who tried to hear Ayodhya cases, with impeachment: PM Modi

Alwar : Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged Sunday that the Congress threatened Supreme Court judges with impeachment when they tried hear the Ayodhya dispute cases earlier this year. Without naming anyone, Modi claimed that Congress party’s Rajya Sabha members, who are also lawyers, had tried to scare away the apex court judges to ensure the hearing in the

cases is delayed until after the 2019 Lok Sabha election. In an unprecedented move, seven opposition parties led by the Congress had moved a notice for the impeachment of then Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra in April this year, accusing him of “misbehaviour” and “misuse” of authority Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu rejected the notice, saying the case against

the then CJI was based on “suspicion and conjectures”. At the political rally in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, Modi said the Congress has no faith in democracy and judiciary. “It does not hold dialogue and stall proceedings in Parliament, but the new game they are playing now is dangerous and this must be debated for a bright future of the country.”

Amarinder Singh declines Pakistan invite, cites terror attacks

New Delhi : Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has declined Pakistan Foreign Minister’s invitation to attend the foundation stone laying for the Kartarpur Corridor on the other side of the border, citing continued terrorist attacks in his state and killings of Indian soldiers by Pak armed forces. In a letter to Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Chief Minister has welcomed the historic

occasion, which he described as the cherished desire of the Sikhs around

the world, but said he must most reluctantly, however, regret his inability

to be present. The Chief Minister said his reasons for declining the invitation were twofold. Firstly, “Not a day passes when Indian soldiers are not killed or wounded on the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, adding that, “Rather than moving towards normalcy these incidents are escalating.” Secondly, the Chief Minister accused the ISI of starting its “nefarious activities within Punjab.

New Delhi : BJP chief Amit Shah Sunday attacked the state government’s proposal to give 12 per cent quota to Muslims, saying his party will never allow it as religionbased reservation is unconstitutional. Shah hit out at Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief and Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao over the issue during campaign rallies at Parkal and Nirmal ahead of the December 7 Assembly polls in the state. “I want to tell Chandrasekhar Rao, the Supreme Court has

fixed 50 per cent ceiling (on total reservations). If you want to provide 12 per cent reservation, from whose quota are you going to carve it out: from Dalits, tribals or OBCs. Decide this first,” Shah said. Shah said Rao promised reservation to the minority community “despite being aware” of the 50 per cent ceiling and forwarded the proposal (bill) to the Centre. “BJP would stand firmly to protect the reservation of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes,” he said.

Mumbai terror strike: A footnote in history

Ten years ago this day, India came under the most serious terrorist assault in its history. For three days of what seemed like unrelenting horror, 10 terrorists from Pakistan—hand-picked, armed and trained under the supervision of the Pakistani establishment—rampaged through the streets of Mumbai, attacking both high-profile targets and innocent civilians with appalling ease and impunity. The toll: 166 deaths, 308 injuries, and a nation left shaken and incandescent. As breathless coverage transmitted the events in real time from the streets of Mumbai into their homes, Indians were dumbstruck at the scale of the tragedy and appalled at the tardy response of the security agencies, but as details of the assault unfolded, they gloried in the heroism of ill-equipped policemen in one of the world’s wealthiest and most vibrant cities. It’s not as if India hadn’t been warned. The city was hit by a series of terrorist bombings amid worsening communal relations in 1993 and then in 2003, leaving a combined toll of more than 300 lives. Alarmingly, the abortive armed attack on Parliament of the world’s biggest democracy came within three months of 9/11. Responsibility remains hard to fix. Later reports comprehensively pointed to warnings issued by the local police in Mumbai although, equally, the intelligence agencies of three countries—India, the US and the UK—failed to piece together evidence of an imminent attack that they had gathered separately from a variety of human intelligence and listening sources. India is not alone in the war against terrorism, nor, by any stretch of the imagination, was its fumbled response as unique as it is sometimes made out to be. As later events in Europe and America have shown, no country is ever entirely prepared for terrorist attacks. Time and again, countries with far more sophisticated and technologically savvy police forces have been caught out by the innovations of terrorists. If the Mumbai attack was the result of terrorists tapping into available technologies, including Google Earth and satellite phones, with handlers monitoring television coverage in Pakistan, others in Europe have used nothing more sophisticated than a machete or simply a car or a van. That is the nature of asymmetric warfare. Ajmal Kasab and his tribe need no reason for their crimes. As the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee told the UN General Assembly in November 2001: “We must firmly rebuff any ideological, political or religious justification for terrorism. We should reject self-serving arguments seeking to classify terrorism according to its root causes, and therefore justifying terrorist action somewhere while condemning it elsewhere.

Farhan Akhtar: Men must change their mentality for women to feel safe

New Delhi : Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar on Sunday — the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women — launched a short film She, which takes a look at the various forms of violence perpetrated against women. Feroz Abbas Khan and Population Foundation of India (PFI) jointly released the three-minute short She online. “For women to feel safe in our society, it is important that men change their mentality and behaviour. This short film She gives the other perspective – of how ignorant men are about this violence. It is imperative that men understand the humiliation that women go through.

The director, who seems to be happy with Rishi’s professionalism, can’t stop gushing about him. She says, “He is one of the most unfiltered people I have met. New Delhi : Chitrangada Singh has always picked unconventional roles, which she somehow manages to pull off with ease. The actress has also done some commercial work and is now enjoying the success of her latest film Baazaar. Chitrangada says, “There is a huge shift in terms of filmmaking and I would like to give all the credit to the audiences. They are the ones deciding what kind of films they deserve to watch on screen. Formula films are not

going to work every time. So it’s a great time for the actors, as it forces you to work harder on your scripts to bring good content.” Directed by Gauravv K. Chawla, Baazaar stars Saif Ali Khan and revolves around the Indian stock market. The film also launched Rohan Mehra, the son of the late actor Vinod Mehra. Talking about her next project, Chitrangada says, “There is nothing really finalised at the moment.”

Katie Price When Alex Rodriguez breaks down pranked Jennifer Lopez A-Rod and Suchard both shared a video of the prank and Lopez’s hilarious reaction.

Los Angeles : Being home for the holidays is all about spending time with your loved ones and, according to Alex Rodriguez, pranking them. With the help of Israeli mentalist Lior Suchard, Alex launched an epic prank upon JLo during a dinner party

on Black Friday, reports EOnline.com. Suchard tapped the guests on their backs, had the singer and actress stand up and follow him around the table and then snapped his fingers, prompting the attendees to put their heads down at once. A-Rod and

Suchard both shared a video of the prank and Lopez’s hilarious reaction. “Psyche!” Rodriguez wrote on his Instagram page, adding, “Thanks to my good friend ‘Master Mentalist’ @ liorsuchard for helping us have a little fun with @jlo tonight. #GoodSport (sic).”

Los Angeles : Katie Price was reduced to tears and forced to lean on her children’s nanny for support as financial troubles took their toll. Price broke down in tears as she visited her local park this week. The mumof-five was comforted by her children’s nanny Lauren as she sobbed after answering a fraught phone call. Wearing an oversized Fila sweatshirt, Katie looked distraught.

Lauren similarly dressed in sports gear did her best to comfort the 40-yearold and wrapped her arms around the former glamour model. Katie only has until December 6 to reach an agreement with her creditors or she could face bankruptcy. It’s awful timing as Katie will have all five of her children staying at her rundown West Sussex mansion for Christmas Day.

Tessa Thompson says Creed 2’s cast and its director approached the film “with real sensitivity and honesty” and she often felt like shooting for a small project.

Tessa Thompson: Creed II was approached ‘with real sensitivity and honesty’ Los Angeles :Actor Tessa Thompson says it was difficult to think about Creed II in terms of scale. The actor, who reprises her role of Bianca Porter in the Creed sequel, told Collider that she realised the scope of the film only when they started shooting for the boxing scenes. “It’s funny because for us, we’re making these films called Creed 1 and Creed 2, it’s

easy to forget somehow that we’re making, essentially, Rocky films. Films that exist inside of the Rocky universe,” said the 35-year-old actor. “And then there’ll be moments on set, almost always when we’re shooting a boxing scene, where we’ll have like a thousand extras and that’s the time where the scope hits you,” she added. She said the film’s cast and its

director approached the film “with real sensitivity and honesty” and she often felt like shooting for a small project. “It feels like we’re making a niche drama, literally, like when it’s scenes with just Mike and myself or just a couple players, it feels like we’re making something small in scope,” Thompson said. “Then we get into those boxing scenes and it

suddenly feels massive. Also, we have all these characters that actually exist in the boxing world. Then it’s totally surreal, because you have these guys come in and it’s like we’re making an HBO special suddenly. So that’s incredible,” she added. Directed by Steven Caple Jr, the film also features Michael B Jordan and Sylvester Stallone.

We were better than Australia skillwise, says Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli said that India’s six-wicket victory in the third T20I at the SCG was down to a professional bowling performance and contributions from the openers. New Delhi: Virat Kohli said that skill-levels may have been the difference between India and Australia at the SCG. “I thought overall, skill wise we were better than Australia,” said the Indian captain in the post-match presentation ceremony. India beat the hosts by six wickets in the final T20I of the three-match series to level the series 1-1. This takes India’s unbeaten run in T20I series to 10. India restricted Australia to 164/6. Krunal Pandya was the star with the ball for his figures of 4-036-4, a performance for which he earned the man of the match award. “I

thought with the ball we were more professional today. I thought it was 180 type of wicket. Those 15 runs less were crucial. A level series is a great show of how the teams have played.” Openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan got India off to a flier in the chase smashing 67 runs within the first 6 overs. “Things become pretty easy when those two guys play like that at the top,” said Kohli. Dhawan was the first to be dismissed and Rohit went an over later. Kohli then led the chase, sharing partnerships with KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik.

Business Insolvency law help address Rs 3 lakh crore stressed assets in 2 years: official

New Delhi: The insolvency law has helped in directly and indirectly addressing stressed assets worth Rs 3 lakh crore in the last two years, a senior government official said Saturday. More than 9,000 cases have come for redressal under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), which became fully operational in December 2016. Corporate Affairs Secretary Injeti Srinivas said there has been a direct and indirect impact of the Code on stressed assets worth close to Rs 3 lakh crore. The estimated amount, included recoveries made through resolution plans and cases settled before admission by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) under the Code. Over 3,500 cases have been resolved at preadmission stage and resulted in claims worth Rs 1.2 lakh crore getting settled, he said. Under the

Code, cases are taken up for resolution only after approval from the NCLT. “About 1,300 cases have been admitted and out of that, in about 400 cases, corporate insolvency resolution process has been completed... in 60 cases resolution plans have been approved, in 240 cases liquidation orders have been given, 126 cases are in appeal. These cases which have been resolved have led to recovery of Rs 71,000 crore as of now,” Srinivas said here. Taking into consideration cases that are at a mature stage of being addressed under the Code, he said the amount would be another Rs 50,000 crore. “If you factor that, you have around Rs 1.2 lakh crore coming through resolutions... (then adding up) preadmission settlements, then it becomes Rs 2.4 lakh crore,” Srinivas said.

Virat Kohli, Krunal Pandya power India to series-levelling win

New Delhi: India captain Virat Kohli hit the winning runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground as India beat Australia by six wickets in the third and final T20I on Sunday. Chasing a tricky target of 165, Kohli remained unbeaten on 61 while Shikhar Dhawan made 41. D’Arcy Short (33) was the top-scorer for Australia, while Krunal Pandya picked up four wickets for India in the first innings. There were a few nervy moments during the chase as India lost a couple of wickets. However, with the help of Dinesh Karthik, Kohli knocked off the last sixty in six and a half overs. Earlier, Australia won the first T20 International by four runs via D/L method before the second match was abandoned due to rain. With

India’s win at the SCG both the teams now share the spoils in the three-match series. For his brilliant performance with the ball Pandya was adjudged as the man of the match. Shikhar Dhawan was nominated as man of the series. In the third T20I

India’s good start was developed by Shikhar Dhawan (41 off 22 balls) and Rohit Sharma (23 off 16 balls). Dhawan and Sharma put on 50 runs off just 28 balls. Together they hit seven fours and four sixes as India scored 67-1 in the powerplay.

Like Mithali Raj, I too was dropped after captaining India, says Sourav Ganguly

New Delhi: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said that what Mithali Raj in the World T20 semifinal is something that he is quite familiar with. “No! I also have also sat in the dug out after captaining India. When I saw Mithali Raj being dropped, I said ‘Welcome to the group’,” Ganguly said at the Tollygunge Club in Kolkata. Mithali, who is the Indian captain in ODIs, had two back-

to-back fifties against Pakistan and Ireland in the tournament. She sustained an injury while fielding in the latter and was rested for the final league game against eventual champions Australia. “Captains are asked to sit, so just do it. I have done it in Faisalabad. I didn’t play an ODI game for 15 months when I was probably the best performer in one-day cricket. It happens in life.

Apple defends iPhone app fees as US Supreme Court weighs consumer suit MUMBAI: Simplicity is supposed to be a selling point for Apple Inc’s iPhone. It may be a problem at the US Supreme Court. The court will hear arguments Monday on accusations that Apple is using its market dominance to jack up prices for iPhone apps. A ruling against Apple, letting a lawsuit go forward, could add to pressure the company already faces to cut the 30 percent commission it charges on app sales. The case turns on what happens when iPhone users buy something at the Apple App Store. In allowing the suit, a federal appeals court said the transaction is a simple one in which consumers buy directly from Apple. Apple says it’s more complicated, with the company serving as a middleman connecting app developers with users. The distinction is critical because of a 1977 Supreme Court ruling that says only direct purchasers of a product can collect damages for overpricing under federal antitrust law. That decision was designed in part to ensure companies don’t have to pay twice for the same misconduct.

Ashleigh Gardner displayed an allround performance as she recorded figures of 22/3 in 4 overs with the ball. Coming down to the bat after opening batswoman Alyssa Healy was dismissed early on, Gardner stuck around in the middle with the skipper Meg Lanning and scored an unbeaten 33 in 26 balls to take the side to a win. In her innings, Gardner scored

a four and 3 sixes, as she scripted an easy win for her side. Speaking about her performance after the match, Garnder said that she feels amazing to perform when it mattered the most. “I was trying to bowl into the wicket and all our bowlers did the job today. I didn’t have the tournament I probably would have liked and fortunately today it came off.

Ahead of polls, experts recommend investors to have a relatively defensive portfolio.

Markets to look at state elections for direction

MUMBAI: The outcome of the upcoming state assembly election is likely to set the tone for the equity markets in the near term. Currently, the BJP is in power in all three states (Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh). Experts believe that an outright victory for the saffron party would definitely be a big boost for the markets in the near term as it would help the ruling party at the centre build momentum in its favour running into next year’s Lok Sabha elections. “While the dynamics of state and national elections are different, we believe a two-thirds win for the BJP will be tailwind for the market and a one-third will be a little negative

and raise concerns, while a loss in all the three states will significantly lower expectations of the general elections – and likely market levels. This could direct the markets expectations into the

elections,” said Edelweiss Financial Services. Any volatility and corrections on account of the poll outcome according to it would be a good opportunity to build long term portfolio. The markets

are factoring in a second term for the BJP-led NDA at the centre though with a slender margin. “India is being interrupted by global macro shenanigans, a credit scare and an impending election.

California wildfire that killed at least 85 people fully contained

California : The deadliest wildfire in California history that destroyed the mountain town of Paradise and killed at least 85 people was 100 percent contained on Sunday, according to state fire officials. The number of people still missing from the Camp Fire north of San Francisco dropped to 249 on Sunday, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said. The number was revised down from 475 as people who were believed missing were found in shelters, staying in hotels or with friends, officials said, adding that many did not know they were on the list. The Camp Fire that started on Nov. 8 destroyed nearly 14,000 homes and burned nearly 154,000 acres (62,000 hectares) – an area five times the size of San Francisco. Ahmedabad : A video of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti leader Gopal Italia firing a couple of shots from what he describes as a “pistol made of PVC pipes” has gone viral on social media. Shot in dark, the less than two-minute video of Italia, who was booked for throwing a shoe at Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja, shows him demonstrating how to shoot from the “PVC pistol” and is heard saying, “This is for the explosion as it doesn’t

come under the guidelines of the Supreme Court or any other laws”, referring to the recent ban on loud firecrackers by the apex court. In the video, the policeman-turned-quota activist also says that the “localmade pistol’s noise” would reach Delhi with the message of Patidar reservation movement. Italia confirmed to The Indian Express that he is in the video, and said, “Some farmers have invented this for scaring away

animals which destroy their crops. Apart from attacking the BJP, I also used the video to send out a message to protect our environment. I believe that it is not as dangerous as other firecrackers. We all should protect our environment.” The authorities have not taken cognisance of the video yet. Last week when farmers visited the sewage treatment plant (STP) of Rajkot Municipal Corporation at Gavaridad

village, they tried to impress Mayor Bina Acharya to release the treated waste water to their fields that day itself. Claiming themselves as close supporters of BJP MP Mohan Kundariya, the group of farmers told the Mayor that they could help a lot during elections. While the Mayor assured them that RMC will release water for their crops at the earliest, she told them that talks about elections were not welcome that day.

‘Oil PSUs plan to add 4,450 petrol pumps in Gujarat’

Ahmedabad: Public sector firms Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum plan to add 4,450 retail outlets across Gujarat in a bid to expand its network and meet growing fuel needs, an official said here Sunday. The three oil companies Sunday launched the process of selecting eligible dealers for these outlets from a single online platform, nearly four years after a similar exercise was taken in 2014, the official said. “Three PSU oil companies have together issued a joint advertisement for dealership after a gap of around four years. Expansion of the petrol pump network is required to meet growing

fuel needs and for the convenience of customers,” Indian Oil Executive Director (Gujarat), S S Lamba said Sunday. The three companies seek to add 4,450 retail outlets in Gujarat, comprising 2,350 of IOC, 998 of BPCL and 1,102 of HP, he

informed. They already operate around 4,000 petrol pumps in Gujarat. “With new highways getting added and distance from urban centres growing, we are also looking to expand our network in rural and far-flung areas,” Lamba added. Many norms have been eased to allow more people to participate in the process, Lamba said, adding that unlike last time, when the minimum qualification required was having passed Class XII, this time those having cleared Class X could also apply. Only those selected on the basis of online forms will have to submit documents for further consideration, which saves on unnecessary paperwork, Lamba added.

Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena vows never to reappoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as PM

Colombo : Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Sunday made it clear that he would never reappoint ousted prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe even as he accepted that the action of removing his arch-rival has created “some form of political unrest” in the country. Sirisena last month abruptly sacked Wickeremesinghe and replaced him with former strongman Mahinda Rajapksa in a controversial move termed by many as unconstitutional. The controversial action on October 26 led to a political crisis in the country with both Wickremesinghe and Rajapaksa claiming to be the legitimate prime minister. Sirisena, addressing the Colombo-based foreign correspondents, said: “There is no possibility that I will be re-appointing him (Wickeremesinghe). “There is some form of political unrest in the country due to my decision, but I do not consider it as a serious political crisis”. The President said that he and Wickremesinghe had developed serious policy differences on their approach to governance. “The first one was on the appointment of the Cabinet. I had entrusted a committee of academics to recommend ways to appoint a cabinet based on a scientific division of subjects. But Mr Wickremesinghe ignored those recommendations,” he said. Sirisena said that Wickremesinghe appointed one ministry to handle both the higher education and the highways. One of the major issues of conflict was Sirisena’s opposition to Wickremesinghe’s nominee to the post of Central Bank governor Arjuna Mahendran, a Singaporean national. “I told him (Wickremesinghe) that he should not be appointed because he is a non Sri Lankan. He insisted that he (Mahendran) be appointed,” Sirisena said.
