The statement comes after a group of self-proclaimed vigilantes severely beat up 46-yr-old alleged cow smuggler in Alwar.

‘If you smuggle, slaughter cows, you’ll be killed’, warns Rajasthan BJP MLA Alwar: Known for his controversial statements, Rajasthan BJP MLA Gyan Dev Ahuja once again said something which might not work in the favour of the ruling party in the state.BJP MLA from Ramgarh Gyan Dev Ahuja has now said, “If you smuggle cows, you will be killed.” The statement comes after a group of self-proclaimed vigilantes severely beat up 46-yearold alleged cow smuggler in Ramgarh area of Alwar district. A man called Zakir Khan was arrested for cattle smuggling after he was pulled out of his truck and beaten by villagers on Saturday. The police had tried to stop his truck, in which there were eight cows, but Zakir allegedly drove through the barricades. The police also claim those in the truck fired at them. (As the public was following the truck, it overturned, resulting in the injuries. .. The people didn’t beat him...he was

injured because the vehicle overturned,” he said. No stranger to controversies, Gyan Dev Ahuja in February 2016 called the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus a hub of sex and drugs where over 3,000 used condoms and 2,000 liquor bottles are daily found. In April, Pehlu Khan was beaten to death by a mob of vigilantes on the Delhi-Jaipur highway for transporting

cows. The police had named cow protection groups and the leader of a local Gaushala or cattle shed for the attack, but the accused were let off by the state Criminal Investigation Department. In November, Ummar Khan was shot dead on the Alwar-Bharatpur border, by alleged cow vigilantes. The police accused him of smuggling cattle but no attacker was arrested. In December this year, the police have had two encounters with alleged cow traffickers. One man was killed in a shootout with the police on December 7. Alwar has recorded the highest number of cases filed under the Rajasthan Bovine Act for cow protection this year. The police have now been directed to set up “Gau Raksha Chowkis” or check posts to control cattle trafficking. Many fear it may only provoke more attacks; policemen here have been given rifles and quick response teams.

The decision was taken at a meeting of BJP MLAs. Thakur’s name was proposed by Suresh Bharadwaj and Mahender Singh and seconded by other members. The meeting was held under the supervision of BJP’s central observers – Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Narendra Singh Tomar. BJP delegation met Himachal Pradesh governor Acharya Dev Vrat later on Sunday and staked claim to form

government in the state. Thakur will be sworn in as the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the swearing in ceremony. Announcing Thakur’s name, Tomar said: “Former CM Prem Kumar Dhumal Ji proposed Jairam Thakur Ji to be elected as the Legislature party leader. Shanta Kumar Ji and JP Nadda Ji also supported this proposal”. Nadda was also in the race for the post. The decision comes a day after Dhumal ruled himself out from the race for the post of Himachal Pradesh chief minister. Although the BJP ousted the Congress in Himachal by winning in 44 of the 68 Assembly constituencies,

Dhumal lost his seat to his opponent Rajendra Rana. Despite the loss, the 73-year-old was in the race for the chief ministerial post after several loyal lawmakers offered him their fresh-won seats. Thakur, 57, addressed the media after the BJP elected him as the Legislature party leader and thanked everyone, including Dhumal for proposing his name. The lawmaker from Seraj constituency served as the BJP’s state chief between 2006 and 2009. Considered a popular face in Himachal Pradesh, Thakur was credited with striking a balance between the warring factions of the BJP.

Adivasi unrest: What is to be done?

There is a huge groundswell of unrest sweeping the adivasi areas of Central India. The Central and state governments are unable to fashion a policy response to this besides terming it as Naxalite-inspired and hence requiring a “shoot and kill” solution. The Naxals typically have no idea about “what is to be done?” There is no need to seek solutions in Vladimir Lenin’s prescriptions. And for that matter in Mao Zedong’s. This not a Naxalite issue at all, but a colossal failure to implement the Constitution. The solutions lie within the Indian Constitution and in the universal principles of justice and equality. The Fifth and Sixth Schedules under Article 244 of the Constitution in 1950 provided for self-governance in specified tribal majority areas. The Fifth Schedule provides for the administration and control of tribal lands (termed “scheduled areas”) within nine states of India. The Fifth Schedule provides protection to the adivasi (tribal) people living in the scheduled areas from alienation of their lands and natural resources to non-tribals. This constitutional safeguard is now under imminent threat of being amended to enable the transfer of tribal lands to non-tribals and corporate bodies. This move has serious implications for the very survival and culture of the millions of tribal people in India. The Fifth Schedule covers tribal areas in nine states of India — namely Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Rajasthan. The governors have been endowed with certain special powers with regard to the Fifth Schedule areas. The judicious use of these provisions enshrined in the Fifth Schedule will certainly make a very positive impact on the tribals living in these regions. Under these powers, the governors can not only direct that any particular law or part thereof may not apply to a scheduled area — that can also make regulation for good governance and peace in these areas. The governors can intervene in areas relating to prohibition or restriction of the transfer of land by or among Scheduled Tribe members; regulation of allotment of land in such areas; and the regulation of money-lending activities. The governor has basically been given the legislative power to make regulations for the “peace and good government of any area which is a scheduled area”. The words “peace and good government” are of very wide import and give wide discretion to the governors to make laws for such a purpose. One can recall the observations made by the President at the Governors’ Conference held on September 16 and 17, 2008 regarding the need for an authoritative legal opinion with respect to the powers of governors under the Fifth Schedule. The matter has since been examined in consultation with the ministry of law and justice and the attorney-general of India has given his opinion that “in performance of the functions and exercise of the powers under the Fifth Schedule.

Hollywood - Bollywood Aamir Khan bans visitors on sets of Thugs Of Hindostan Mumbai: Who’s calling the shots on the sets of Yash Raj Films’ Thugs Of Hindostan? It isn’t director Vijay Krishna Acharya for sure. Reports filtering in from the sets insist Aamir Khan has personally taken stock of the inflow of visitors and put a ban on them. A source says, “It happened after Amitabh Bachchan’s look leaked from the sets of the film. Aamir was very upset. He kept wondering how this could happen. To avoid any further leakage of this sort Aamir has placed a ban on all visitors on the sets of the film.”This, in practical terms, means no one can drop in to meet the actors and technicians while they’re shooting Thugs Of Hindostan. Except, of course, producer Aditya Chopra.

Abhishek Kapoor finally speaks up on KedarnathSRK, Aanand L Rai’s film clash

There have been reports about an alleged fall-out between director Abhishek Kapoor and his producer Prernaa Arora. Apparently, Prernaa is against releasing Kedarnath, the film featuring Sushant Singh Rajput and Saif’s daughter Sara Ali Khan, on December 21 2018, the date on which the new Shah Rukh Khan-starrer directed by Aanand L. Rai is scheduled for release. However, reports say, Abhishek is insistent. The filmmaker took time off from his shooting at Film City in Mumbai to have his say. He says, “This is so pointless. We announced the release date of Kedarnath long ago. We didn’t jump into it just because I wanted to compete with Shah Rukh Khan’s film. My producers are very much on the same page as me.”

For a while, news has been that there will be two lead actresses in Dabangg 3. With Sonakshi Sinha invariably being in the cast of the film, it was also speculated earlier that Iulia Vantur could be the actress. But with Iulia stating that Bollywood is not her priority anymore despite having done an item number in a film earlier, the makers have now finalised Salman Khan’s favourite from Bigg Boss 10 — Mouni Roy — in the film. Mouni who makes her screen debut opposite Akshay Kumar in Gold has a very different personality and role in the film. It was earlier being speculated that Salman had recommended her for the role in Gold, but it looks like the actor is so impressed with her work that he has cast her in his film as well.

Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma gear up for reception in Mumbai

Mumbai: It’s been no less than an absolute fairytale, when it comes to cricketer Virat Kohli and actress Anushka Sharma’s grand wedding. In fact, it’s now being termed as the wedding of the year. The couple tied the knot earlier this month in a hushhush ceremony in Tuscany, Italy. Tight-lipped till the last second, the decadence and the exquisiteness of their Italian nuptials tumbled out the very day. Their reception in New Delhi on December 21 too had the hallmark of royalty and elegance, what with A nushka reprising her bridal look in a rich, red Sabyasachi Benarasi saree. And now, the couple which landed in Mumbai on Friday, is gearing up for the grand finale — the Mumbai reception. The

grand event is set to host Anushka’s pals from the film industry, as well as Virat’s friends from the world of cricket. The reception will be held at the plush St. Regis in Lower Parel. A source close to the preparations reveals that the ballroom has been booked for the reception. “Virat and Anushka’s families and friends have been invited to the Astor Ballroom, which can seat about 300 guests. In fact, the whole of eighth and ninth floor have been booked and blocked out for the couple, which will ensure their, as well as their families’ privacy,” says the source, assuring us that a few extra rooms have also been kept on standby for the wedding party, given the number of guests in mind.

FPIs’ net outflow from equities at Rs 7,300 crore in December so far

New Delhi: Overseas investors have pulled out a massive Rs 7,300 crore from the country’s stock markets this month so far, primarily due to rising crude prices and widening fiscal deficit. This comes following an eight-month high inflow of Rs 19,728 crore in November, mainly on account of the government’s plan to recapitalise PSU banks and surge in India’s ranking on the World Bank’s ease of doing business list. This also marked the highest net investment by FPIs since March, when they had poured in Rs 30,906 crore in the equity markets.According to the depositories

Udgam makes 5-tonne effort to educate poor girls

AHMEDABAD: ‘Pasti ki Masti’ campaign, a joint initiative of the Times of India and The Times Foundation, has evoked an overwhelming response from students of Udgam School for Children. Parents and students donated five tonnes of paper waste during a sustained collection drive. Proceeds from the sale of this ‘pasti’ (paper waste) will support the education of poor girls. All classes of Udgam School — from pre-primary to class XII — contributed to the cause. Students were told about the ‘comfort zone’ they enjoyed and asked to think about life beyond that zone. They were told that they may forget most of their childhood once they grow up but they will never forget the help they extended in education of poor girls. Parents also supported the cause and sent old newspapers and other paper waste including books, notebooks, chart paper and magazines. The school actively advocated for the cause during a campaign of about 25 days in which teachers kept speaking to students and motivating them. The school also sent messages on social media and platforms such as WhatsApp to parents and kept them informed about collection figures. Udgam School even offered to get more than 5kg of paper waste collected from homes using their vehicles. Talking to TOI, director of Udgam School for Children, Radika Iyer, said such activities are important as they help children grow into sociallyresponsible citizens. “Hence, we keep doing such activities from time to time.

AHMEDABAD: Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) chief Hardik Patel has accused the RSS of spreading communal hatred. On Sunday morning, Hardik circulated an ‘open letter’ on social media, reminding the Patidarsof how the RSS was turning Dalits against the upper castes, Muslims against Hindus and thus ruling via ‘politics of fear’. RSS spokesperson Mukesh Malkan, however, dismissed Hardik’s allegation. “That young boy doesn’t have an understanding of the country or the world’s issues and the RSS’s contributions to the country,” Malkan said. He added they would suggest all such people “to

US praises UN budget cut, says ‘big step in right direction’

United Nations: The United States has applauded a USD 285-million-cut in the UN core budget, saying it was “a big step in right direction.” The General Assembly adopted a budget of USD 5.396 billion for 2018-2019, slightly below the USD 5.4 billion that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had sought. The United States is by far the largest contributor to the UN budget, providing for 22 per cent of the core budget.US Ambassador Nikki Haley said in a statement that “inefficiency and overspending” at the world body were “well known.”Haley said the budget negotiations had generated several

“successes” with financial cutbacks and a reduction of the UN’s “bloated management and support functions.”“We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked,” she said.“This historic reduction in spending -- in addition to many other moves

toward a more efficient and accountable UN -- is a big step in the right direction.” “While we are pleased with the results of 2017’s budget negotiations, you can be sure we’ll continue to look at ways to increase the UN’s efficiency while protecting our interests,” she added. The UN’s operating budget is separate from its

peacekeeping budget, which was cut by USD 600 million in 2017 under pressure from the administration of US President Donald Trump. The push for deeper cuts comes as Guterres is trying to build support for his plans for reform of the UN bureaucracy. Guterres’ budget proposal was USD 200 million below the 20162017 biennial budget. During a meeting held on the sidelines of the annual General Assembly debate in September, Trump said the United Nations had failed to reach its “full potential due to bureaucracy and mismanagement.” “We are not seeing the results in line with this investment,” he said.

They should go and see the work that RSS does for the nation.” In his letter, Hardik says: “The BJP has been garnering votes from the Patidar community by spreading fear of Muslims.” He recalled how Dalits and Muslims had, in fact, supported the Patidar movement. “Until the younger generation understands the RSS’ motives, lakhs of people will continue to be killed,” Hardik says. “The Patidars have never thought there was not a single Muslim among the goons who were supported by the police in inflicting atrocities on Patels(sic)” asks Hardik in the letter.

One held for rioting in land dispute case AHMEDABAD: Police have arrested Irfan Tilli of Shah-e-Alam for violence which took place in Narol between former bootlegger Nawabkhan Pathan’s grandson Ali Khan and a slain builder Hanif Dadhi’s son Asif Shaikh. Dadhi, who allegedly had business interests with some senior police officers, was shot dead in Jamalpur earlier this year. The case is still under investigation. According to sources, Asif and Khan are not in good terms following a dispute over a piece of land near Wilson Hotel in Narol. Even as a civil suit over the land dispute is pending in the court, both the parties confronted each other at the disputed land on Wednesday morning and later lodged cross-complaints with the Narol police. “Ali Khan lodged a complaint against Asif and his accomplice Aslam for stabbing him while Asif lodged a complaint of rioting against Ali Khan and his accomplices,” said a police official. Inspector R A Jadav of Narol police station said, “We have arrested Irfan Tilli, a resident of Shah-eAlam and an associate of Ali Khan, for the rioting on Saturday.”

‘Nutritious food ensures TB cure’

AHMEDABAD: Malnutrition and lack of nutritious food in diet is making multi-drug resistant tuberculosis deadly. A team of researchers from BJ Medical College observed that out of over 100 patients it was treating for tuberculosis by strictly following multidrug Directly Observed Treatment (DOT) regime, nearly 51 % patients had died early primarily because of poor nutrition. Other factors that had contributed to the death of the patients included smoking and alcohol addiction.Experts now feel that regular food rich in vitamins, calcium and other micronutrients is essential for patients to defeat the disease. The research was carried out by the departments of pharmacology and

pulmonary medicine at BJ medical College on 112 patients suffering for multiple-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The researchers — Krunal Prajapati, Vishal Mishra, Mira Desai, Rajesh Solanki and Purvi Naik — found that early incidence of death despite good adherence and intensive therapy with seven drugs was alarming and indicated high-grade drug resistance. The research further found that out of 83 (74.1 %) of the patients with unsuccessful treatment outcome, 58 (51.78 %) died because of low Body Mass Index (BMI); this indicates poor diet. The research also found that 10 patients who had defaulted on the treatment and 11 others who showed treatment failure also

had low BMI of less than 18.5. Most of these patients died within the first three months of starting treatment whereas the mean time required for sputum culture conversion is four months. Dr Rajesh Solanki, head and professor of TB and chest diseases department, said that nutrition is a big factor in both contracting and controlling TB. He said that while TB is a poor man’s disease, nearly 10-15% infection is now seen in middle and upper middle-class patients as well.“Majority of the patients are malnourished because of poor diet that does not include high protein components found in milk, pulses and eggs. Many TB patients lose appetite due to the illness and lose around 8-10 kg.

6 killed in suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan, ISIS claims responsibility Kabul/Cairo: ISIS claimed responsibility for an explosion on Monday carried out by a suicide bomber near a compound of Afghanistan’s national intelligence agency in the capital, Kabul, the group said on its Amaq news agency. The blast, close to the entrance of the security agency compound, killed at least six people and wounded one, Afghan government officials said. A suicide attacker on foot blew himself up near a compound belonging to the Afghan intelligence agency in Kabul on Monday, killing six civilians, officials said. The attacker struck at a time when workers were arriving at their offices. The attack comes a week after militants stormed a National Directorate of Security (NDS) training centre in the Afghan capital. Interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish said six civilians in a car were killed when the attacker detonated himself. “Six people were

martyred and three others were wounded,” Danish said. “They were hit when they were passing the area in their Toyota sedan vehicle. We still do not know the target of the attack but it happened on the main road,” he added. The health ministry confirmed the death toll but put the number of wounded at one. An AFP reporter at the blast site said the attack happened outside the main entrance to an NDS compound. Security forces have swarmed the area, closing off the main road leading to the building. Ambulances were seen leaving the scene, apparently taking

casualties to hospitals in the city. “Our initial information shows a blast took place near an intelligence headquarters in Shash Darak neighbourhood of Kabul,” deputy interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said. Last week’s attack on the NDS was claimed by the Islamic State, which has expanded its presence in Afghanistan since it first appeared in the region in 2015. It has scaled up its attacks in Kabul, including those on the country’s Shiite minority. The resurgent Taliban and increasingly IS are both stepping up their assaults on security installations and mosques.
