Short News Letting women in Sabarimala may lead to ‘another Ayodhya’: Petitioner to SC New Delhi: The Kshetra Samrakshana Samiti on Thursday urged the Supreme Court not to tinker with the age-old custom and religious practice and said allowing women in the age group of 10 to 50 to enter the Ayyappa temple “will lead to social tensions in Kerala.” Senior counsel Kailasanatha Pillay, appearing for the Samiti made this submission before a five judge constitution Bench comprising the Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Rohinton Nariman, AM Kanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra hearing a batch of petitions challenging the ban on entry of women between the age of 10 and 50 into the temple. He said though members of the samiti are peace loving people, yet “I don’t want another Ayodhya in Kerala”. Earlier the CJI told the counsel “if you say it is a public temple, then the custom and essential and practice must be integral to the religion; the question is how far the practice of exclusion of certain category of women is valid. Your custom must stand the test of constitutional provisions.” The CJI said, “one can have rights to regulate rituals, but you cannot impose discriminatory conditions.

‘The main issue between India and Pakistan is Kashmir but blame game can’t continue forever,’ Imran Khan said.

If India takes one step, we’ll take two to resolve Kashmir issue: Imran Khan

Mumbai/Islamabad: Former cricketer turned politician Imran Khan is set to be the new Prime Minister of Pakistan after his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf is leading with 119 votes. The party tweeted that “Yahaan Ka mausam badalnay wala hai, Yahaan koi aanay wala hai (Winds of Change are about to strike Pakistan. Someone is coming to bring the change.) Addressing the press conference, Imran Khan said: “I thank Allah, after 22 years of struggle, my prayers have been answered.

I have got the chance to fulfil my dream and serve the nation.” He said the Pakistan he saw growing up, deteriorated in front of his “very eyes”. “Through its ups and downs; I am grateful for being given this chance,” he added. Imran Khan said he came into politics because

he wanted Pakistan to become the country that Jinnah had envisioned. “I just want to say a few things about the kind of Pakistan I want to see. My inspiration is our Prophet (PBUH) who believed in a welfare state; where we take responsibility for our weak,” he added.

BJP’s controversial UP MLA Surendra Singh said, ‘Hindus should have 5 children. Two for man, 2 for the woman and one surplus.’

Giving birth to child is God’s ‘prasad’, every Hindu should have 5: UP BJP MLA

Ballia (Uttar Pradesh): A child is a gift from God and every Hindu should have at least five, two for the man, two for the woman and one surplus, BJP’s controversial Uttar Pradesh MLA Surendra Singh has said. Hindus will become a minority if there is “no balance” in population control, the legislator from Bairia, who earlier in July said rape cannot be curbed even if Lord Ram descends on earth, told reporters on Wednesday night.“Hindus should have at least five children. Two for the man, two for the woman and one surplus. Giving birth to a child is ‘prasad’ (gift) from God. India can become strong, when Hindus are strong. When Hindu is weak, India is weak...,” Singh said. According to him, the Hindu community should be concerned that they will become a minority if there is “no balance in population control” and have more

children. “Hindus will be a minority, not due to terrorists but due to themselves,” he said. Singh’s statements have often put the state’s ruling BJP in an embarrassing spot. After the Kairana Lok Sabha and Noorpur assembly bypolls earlier this year, he blamed ministers in the Yogi Adityanath government for the party’s humiliating defeat in both places.

China quietly resumes activities in Doklam, India hasn’t dissuaded it: US

New Delhi: China has quietly resumed its activities in the Doklam area and neither Bhutan nor India has sought to dissuade it, a top US official has said while comparing Beijing’s actions in the Himalayan region with its manoeuvres in the disputed South China Sea. China claims sovereignty over all of South China Sea. Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan have counterclaims. China is engaged in hotly

contested territorial disputes in both the South China Sea and the East China Sea. Beijing has built up and militarised many of the islands and reefs it controls in the region. Both areas are stated to be rich in minerals, oil and other natural resources and are also vital to global trade. “I would assess that India is vigorously defending its northern borders and this is a subject of concern to India,” Alice G Wells, the

Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia told lawmakers during a Congressional hearing while responding to a question on China’s increased road building activities along the Indian border. “As (India) ahead to its own strategic stability, it certainly helps drive and is a factor in driving closer partnership that we enjoy with India,” Wells said in response to a question from Congresswoman Ann Wagner.

India and China have clashed repeatedly over territories in the Himalayas. Most recently Chinese and Indian troops faced off on the disputed Doklam plateau between Bhutan and China after the Chinese People’s Liberation Army began building roads through the area, Wagner said. “Although both countries back down, China has quietly resumed its activities in Doklam and neither Bhutan nor India has sought to dissuade it.

Imran Khan brings little hope for Pakistan’s future

It is commonplace to see media reports calling elections—wherever they happen—historic and uniquely important. The Wednesday election in Pakistan was no different. Indeed, Pakistan is standing at a crossroads and this election could indeed have been a game changer. However, it was not to be. Going by the numbers at the time this editorial was written, it looks like Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) will come to power. However, the strings will continue to be pulled by the Pakistan army. Khan, a star cricketerturned-politician, owes his rise to the army—the most powerful actor in Pakistan’s domestic affairs. From underperforming in the last election in 2013 and complaining of rigging, Khan and Pakistan have come a long way. Most other non-PTI parties are today complaining of rigging and Khan is sitting pretty at the top. It is important to understand why Khan’s ascent seems to be a missed opportunity for Pakistan and the region. One, this would be only the second time in Pakistan’s history when a peaceful transition of power is happening from one civilian government to another. The first instance, in 2013, was clearly the more significant one. The mandate that Sharif won five years ago was largely on his own. Sharif had himself started his political career as a protege of the Pakistan army in the 1980s. Over time, though, he realized the pitfalls of befriending the army. In 2006, Sharif and his political rival, the late Benazir Bhutto of the Pakistan’s Peoples Party (PPP), signed a “Charter of Democracy” where the two pledged “not to solicit the support of military to come into power or to dislodge a democratic government”. After coming to power in 2013 with a handsome mandate, Sharif started to assert himself. He attended the swearing-in-ceremony of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He put the former military dictator Pervez Musharraf on trial. He carved out an approach, divergent to the army’s, in securing domestic peace with terrorist groups. But the army wasn’t going to be a mute spectator and today, Sharif and his daughter—his political heir—are behind bars. The army has taken full control of internal security and external policy. Musharraf is spending time in London, far away from institutions of accountability in Pakistan. In order to cut Sharif and his party, the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), or PML-N, to size, the Pakistan army has supported multiple protest movements against the civilian government in the last five years. One such protest was led by Khan and a religious preacher named Tahirul Qadri in 2014. The army’s tacit support to the protesters was widely seen as a “soft coup” in operation, and marked the beginning of Khan’s ascent in national politics.

Prateik Babbar on his character in Mulk: It’s ‘Moti’ not expletive for me, but don’t like the role of a boy who’s people commenting on my body: Vidya gone astray

Mumbai : Actor Prateik Babbar, who has been struggling to find his bearings, is finally in a happy and peaceful space as he is all set to tie the knot with fiance Sanya Sagar. On the professional front, Prateik’s cocainesnorting bad boy act in the blockbuster Baaghi 2 has got him back into the reckoning, although as he says a majority of his role was cut. Prateik now has Anubhav Sinha’s hardhitting political drama Mulk where he plays a terror accused. “It’s the role of a boy who’s gone astray. When I heard it I immediately wanted to do it. There’s so much pain and hurt and persecution embodied in the part. Muslims are looked on in a particular way with suspicion and distrust for no fault of theirs. It is a very frightening situation. Anubhav Sir has captured the turmoil of the community, and I was more than happy to be part of the film,” says Prateik happily. Luckily he swam through the audition. “I

was in. And I was totally immersed in my character. When the role came to me I was only given my part and my lines. I didn’t know the rest of the script and characters. So I focused on getting my part right before I had a chance to get familiar with the rest of the characters and the plot.” Prateik says this is the phase he had been waiting for. “I find it hard to believe that I’ve been working for ten years. I feel I’m starting out only now.” He is honest enough to admit he went through a period of great emotional trauma. “I lost both my grandparents. My grandmother was the mother I never had. The emptiness will never go away. But luckily I have my two aunts now to look after me. And of course, there’s my fiancée.” Prateik says love has changed his life. “I am more at peace, able to focus on my work and I’ve someone to go back to at the end of the day. I am very clear on keeping my professional and personal lives apart.

Mumbai: Ahead of the release of Bollywood’s upcoming musical comedy ‘Fanney Khan’, several actors have voiced their opinion against fat shaming as debutante actress Pihu Sand features in the film as an overweight teenager. The film also touches on one of the most common social evils, body shaming. In the movie, Sand plays the role of an obese teenager, who gets criticised time and again for being on the heavy side. Debutante actress Pihu Sand, who plays Anil Kapoor and Divya Dutta’s daughter, Lata in the upcoming musical drama, had earlier revealed that she added 20 kilos to tip the scales at 98 kilos. Earlier, Anil Kapoor had also opened up about body issues faced by Sonam and Arjun, expressing the emotional trauma faced by the two. “I think all the criticism came right after my first film. I just stood there, but made sure none of the negativity stays back. The fact that I played the role clearly states how I feel about body shaming,” said actress Bhumi Pednekar. Pihu Sand had also revealed that she idolizes Bhumi Pednekar, whose debut venture too required gaining weight for the role. Moreover, ‘Kahaani’ star Vidya Balan said, “Wherever you go, I think people are very body-obsessed today.

Aamir Khan to produce Gulshan Kumar biopic

New Delhi : After much delay, there is finally some confirmation on the Gulshan Kumar biopic. Aamir Khan Productions and T-Series will be jointly producing the biopic which will be directed by Subhash Kapoor of Jolly LLB fame. The film was earlier titled Mogul and was supposed to star Akshay Kumar in the lead role. Taran Adarsh tweeted, “BIG NEWS… Aamir Khan Productions and TSeries to release Gulshan Kumar biopic in Christmas 2019… Written and directed by Subhash Kapoor… Filming to begin early next year.” Akshay Kumar apparently left the project citing date issues but soon Aamir Khan got involved. As per sources, it was actually director Rajkumar Hirani who got Aamir Khan interested in the project. On the condition of anonymity, a source claimed, “Actually when the script was drafted, Bhushan Kumar wanted to run it past Rajkumar Hirani for any inputs from him. Though Hirani was busy with the post production of Sanju, he took out time and made sure to go through the script and what he saw impressed him. So much so that he wanted Aamir also to read it. As Aamir and Hirani have had a great working relationship and shared quite a knack for storytelling, Aamir got his hands on the script and liked it.” With Sanju performing spectacularly well at the box office, one can say that biopics are back to being the flavour of the season. The lead cast of the Gulshan Kumar biopic is yet to be announced but it would be certainly interesting to watch if Mr Perfectionist himself takes on the role.

India vs England: Adil Rashid included in England squad for first Test at Edgbaston 25-year-old allrounder Jamie Porter has also earned his maiden call-up to the England Test squad.

Mumbai: England have announced their 13-man squad for the first Test against India and leg-spinner Adil Rashid has been included in the side. Rashid, whose last Test came against India in 2016, had earlier stated his desire of concentrating only on white-ball cricket. However, the 30-year-old wrist spinner had also said that said he “was not finished” with the longer form of the game. 25-year-old allrounder Jamie Porter has also earned his maiden call-up to the Test squad. The first Test between England and India begins on August 1 at Edgbaston. “Adil Rashid also returns to the England Test squad. Before the selection meeting, Adil had confirmed

his availability to play Test cricket for England for the whole of this summer and the upcoming winter tours to Sri Lanka and West Indies. Following his earlier decision in February 2018, Adil has a white-ball only contract to play for Yorkshire this summer. That arrangement is unchanged by his selection for England.” “However, Adil fully understands that if he wishes to be eligible for Test cricket in the 2019 season, he must have a county contract to play four-day cricket. Moving forward, England Test players must be committed to the county championship.” “Clearly, the one-off circumstances around Adil’s return to the Test squad are unusual.

Mumbai: India vs Ireland, Hockey Women’s World Cup: The Indian women hockey team went down 1-0 to Ireland in their second Hockey Women’s World Cup match on Thursday. Ireland’s Ana O’Flanagan successfully converted their penalty in the first quarter using her stick to deflect the setpiece attempt into the top-right. Ireland then defended brilliantly to deny India of a chance of equalising. After settling for a 1-1 draw against World No. 2 and hosts England in their Pool B opener, the Indian hockey team failed to capitalise on their match against lower ranked Ireland,

who qualified for the quarterfinals with the win against the Indian eves. India go down 1-0 to Ireland in their second match of the World Cup. With the win, Ireland advance to the quarterfinals. They are at the top of Pool B with six points. India, who have earned just 1 point so far, play their next do-or-die match against USA. India are in the final minutes of the match and Ireland are confident of not letting go of their lead. Rampal collects the ball from the Irish defender and makes a fierce shot to the far post that is just stopped by Grace O’Flanagan’s outstretched leg. India receive their seventh penalty corner.

Mumbai: Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor pleaded guilty on Thursday in Brooklyn as part of a deal with prosecutors to resolve charges over an April melee at the Barclays Center arena. McGregor, who remained stone-faced throughout the court proceeding, will avoid prison as a result of his agreement. The 30-yearold brash Irish star was charged with assault, criminal mischief and other crimes for his role in the brawl. Video footage, which went viral, appeared to show McGregor and his entourage in an underground parking area smashing windows on a bus filled with Ultimate Fighting Championship fighters who were at

the arena to publicize an upcoming UFC event. Cian Cowley, another Irish fighter charged in the incident, also pleaded guilty on Thursday. The UFC, the sport’s premier organizing body, said one fighter was hit by a dolly thrown through a window, while another suffered a cut to his eye after the glass shattered. At the time of the melee, McGregor was angry that the UFC had stripped him of the lightweight title, according to profanity-laced messages he posted on Twitter. The UFC took away the title after McGregor decided not to defend it in favor of taking a highly lucrative boxing match against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather.

Virender slams Asia Cup schedule, says India need not play tournament Mumbai: Former India opener Virender Sehwag has slammed the schedule of the upcoming Asia Cup and said that the men in blue do need to play the tournament. According to the schedule, India are slated to play two matches on the trot (September 18 and 19). The first one will be against a qualifier and the second against arch-rivals Pakistan. “I am really shocked to see the scheduling because which country plays backto-back cricket matches these days? There was a gap of two days in

between the T20 matches in England and here you are playing ODIs under hot Dubai weather and that too without a break. So, I don’t think this is a correct scheduling,” Sehwag told India TV. “Why there’s such hue and cry overplaying the Asia Cup? Don’t play the Asia Cup. Prepare the team for the home series or the away series. It’s really difficult to play back-to-back games,” Sehwag added. Explaining the importance of giving the players some rest between two games, the 42-year-old

said, “There shouldn’t be any backto-back games. If the BCCI had to cancel anything then it should have been the qualifier game in the Asia Cup rather than reducing the fourday practice match against Essex to three days. A player needs at least 48 hours to recover after playing an ODI match because you field for 3.5 hours and after that if you bat for 2 hours then it makes your total time spend on the ground to 5.5 hours. So, it takes a minimum of 24 to 48 hours for a player to recover.

The Asia Cup begins on September 15 with the final on September 28. Unlike the previous edition which was held in a T20 format, the 2018 edition will feature 50-over matches.

unscrupulous elements having vested interests. It is being projected that the previous auditor was forced to resign due to bad management and poor corporate governance in the company. The Company strongly refutes such baseless rumours and clarifies that: 1. The Company practices and adopts the highest standards of corporate governance and in light of the global and large operations of the company, its Board has rightly decided to recommend a global firm (Big 4 accounting firm and member of KPMG International) like B S R & Associates

LLP as its auditors in place of an audit firm i.e. M/s R Choudhary& Associates. 2. A major subsidiary of the company i.e. M/s SintexBAPL Limited is already audited by M/s B S R & Associates LLP and therefore it is completely logical to retain the same audit firm at holding company level i.e. SPTL level also. 3. A large number of international and institutional investors of repute are investors in the Company and therefore such a change is a very positive and commendable action by the Board of the company.

El Paso : The Trump administration faced a court-imposed deadline Thursday to reunite thousands of children and parents who were forcibly separated at the US-Mexico border, an enormous logistical task brought on by its “zero tolerance” policy on illegal entry. Authorities have identified 2,551 children five and older who may be covered by the order to be reunited with their parents by Thursday’s court-imposed deadline. That effort was expected to fall short, partly because hundreds of parents may have already been deported without their children. But, by focusing only those deemed by the government to be “eligible” for reunification, authorities expected claim success. As of Tuesday, there were 1,012 parents reunified with their children in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. Hundreds more had been cleared and were just waiting on transportation. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told members of Congress on Wednesday that the administration was “on track” to meet the deadline, an assertion that was greeted with disbelief and anger by the all-Democrat Congressional Hispanic Caucus, according to people who attended.

In North Korea, people are eating dog meat to beat the heat

Pyongyang : In North Korea, summer is not a good time to be a dog. In the sizzling heat, North Korea’s biggest brewery is pumping out twice as much beer as usual, Pyongyang residents are lining up to get their “bingsu”, a syrupy treat made with shaved ice and restaurants are serving up bowl after bowl of the season’s biggest culinary attraction: spicy dog meat soup. Euphemistically known as “dangogi,” or sweet meat, dog has long been believed to be a stamina food in North and South Korea and is traditionally eaten during the hottest time of the year, giving a sad twist to the old saying “dog days of summer.” The dates are fixed according to the lunar calendar and dog meat consumption centers around the “sambok,” or three hottest days- July 17 and 27, and Aug 16 this year. Demand appears to be especially high this year because of a heatwave in East Asia. Temperatures in the North have been among the highest ever recorded, hovering near 40 degree Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in several cities.

11 House Republicans seek impeachment of DOJ’s Rod Rosenstein

Washington : A group of 11 House conservatives introduced articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the Justice Department official who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. The move came Wednesday after months of criticism aimed at the department and the Russia investigation in particular, from Trump and his Republican allies in Congress. Trump has fumed about Mueller’s probe and repeatedly called it a “witch hunt,” a refrain echoed by some of the lawmakers. The impeachment effort is led by North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, who talks to Trump frequently and often defends him to his colleagues. It is unclear whether there will be enough support in the party to pass the impeachment resolution, as Republican leaders have not signed on to the effort and are unlikely to back it. Meadows, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, and the other Republicans who introduced the resolution have criticized Rosenstein and Justice Department officials for not being responsive enough as House committees have requested documents related to the beginning of the Russia investigation and a closed investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s emails. The introduction does not trigger an immediate vote, but Meadows could make procedural moves on the House floor that could force a vote late this week or when the House returns in September from its upcoming recess. The House is scheduled to leave Thursday for the five-week recess.
