Govt calls Aadhaar ruling historic, Congress too claims victory New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government and the principal Opposition party, the Congress, both have claimed victory over the Supreme Court’s verdict on Aadhaar on Wednesday. The Centre hailed the verdict as “historic” and finance minister Arun Jaitley said the Congress had cut a sorry figure in opposing a concept it pioneered when in power. “The court has only disallowed Aadhaar in some cases where it is not backed by law,” the minister said, adding that prohibitions on the usage of Aadhaar laid down by the apex court were not perpetual in nature.

The court expressed trust in UIDAI’s systems and said that the Central Identities Data Repository — the central database where biometric and demographic data are stored — is secure. UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey said the Supreme Court has accepted that there is a legitimate state aim in Aadhaar and it ensures dignity and empowers marginalised sections of the society.

Law should back future directives on Aadhaar linking, says UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan

New Delhi : On data security and privacy, the Supreme Court on Wednesday sided with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), rejecting petitioners’ concerns regarding the establishment of a surveillance regime and the lack of adequate data protection provisions. At the same time, the court empowered citizens to control their data. The UIDAI collects demographic and biometric data of an individual during enrolment. The major concern raised by the petitioners, the court noted, was the “storage and retention of this data whenever authentication takes place” and not collection of data for enrolment or authentication process.

Six years after a clutch of petitions challenged the use of Aadhaar, the 12-digit biometric based unique identity number, the Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld its constitutional validity. In an interview to Hindustan Times, Ajay Bhushan Pandey, CEO, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), talks about the road ahead for Aadhaar. Excerpts from the interview. The majority verdict of the Supreme Court is a historic judgement.

Supreme Court order on Aadhaar lays good governance Aadhaar verdict historic, says Arun Jaitley road map, says Ravi Shankar Prasad

The government will consider whether linking Aadhaar with bank accounts and mobile numbers needs legal backing through a legislation, after the Supreme Court ruled out such linkages. In an interview, Ravi Shankar Prasad, the minister of electronics and IT, and the government’s key driver of the Aadhaar project, said there is a view in the government that “this must be revisited”. Prasad spoke to HT’s Kumar Uttam. Edited excerpts: It is deeply satisfying. It is a watershed moment in the polity of India. And it is historic judgment which blends three issues in an extraordinary legal context — the right of the poor man to have his entitlement which empowers him and strengthens his voice; the dignity of the poor with a balance for privacy; and the two being in sync with good governance.

Mamata Banerjee directed the police to act as per the law passed by the state Assembly which empowers the administration to seek compensation from political parties for losses and damages during political agitation or shutdown.

West Bengal bandh:

Buses torched, trains halted; BJP calls it a success, for Mamata it was a ‘flop’ show

New Delhi : The 12-hour shutdown by the BJP in West Bengal on Wednesday was called off two hours in advance after the party termed it to be a “complete success”, even as sporadic incidents of violence were reported from across the state. The bandh was observed to protest against the recent killing of two students during a demonstration for the appointment of school teachers in Islampur area in North Dinajpur district. “As the bandh has been successful, we have decided to call it off two hours ahead of the scheduled time,” BJP state president Dilip Ghosh said. He added, “The reports that we have received from the districts prove that the shutdown was a success. People have willingly participated and supported it as it was called for genuine reasons.” Not taking the bandh call seriously,

the Bengal government had issued a notification, asking its employees to attend office today. There will be no holiday on the day before or after the bandh, the notification said. Even a half day will not be sanctioned, it added. Several incidents of violence were reported from across West Midnapore, West Burdwan and North and South Dinajpur as BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters clashed with each other and set ablaze three state-run buses, besides pelting stones at vehicles in Islampur. Education Minister and TMC General Secretary Partha Chatterjee, however, claimed the situation was “completely under control” and normal life was “not at all affected”. “The BJP has been trying to foment trouble in some areas and instil a sense of fear among the people.

The government on Wednesday welcomed the verdict on Aadhaar, with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad terming it a ‘historic judgement’ that would bolster good governance, and the delivery of services to the poorer sections of society. “The Supreme Court decision is a historic one,” Mr. Jaitley said at a press conference. “The fact that the concept and legislation of a unique identity number has been accepted after a judicial review is extremely welcome. “There are 122 crore people who have Aadhaar,” Mr. Jaitley said.

Caste-based untouchability has ended but ‘political untouchability’ has been invented, says Ram Madhav

New Delhi : Caste-based untouchability has ended in India but “political untouchability” has been invented, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said on Wednesday. Speaking at an event on ‘GandhiMandela Legacy: Way Forward’, organised by RIS (Research and Information System, an autonomous policy research institute) to celebrate 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and 100th birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela, Madhav said that both Gandhi and Mandela had adversaries but not enemies in their political lives. He said that if one is in politics he is bound to have adversaries and even Gandhi was at loggerheads with people within his own party. “He had to endure differences of opinion, he had to

endure rebellion...even from those who were his choices,” he said going on to describe Gandhiji’s differences of opinion with Jawaharlal Nehru. He spoke on the politics of the day and said that both Mandela and Gandhi stood for the man of the street, they

Srinagar : Authorities will provide each candidate contesting the local polls in Jammu and Kashmir two to three personal security officers and government accommodation, officials aware of the development said. The facilities are being offered to ensure a greater participation in the polls amid a spike in militant violence. “The candidates will not only get government accommodation but they will be given security as well as fuel for their vehicles,’’ said a top police officer on condition of anonymity. Abid Ahmad, an independent candidate

who has filed his nomination papers to contest municipal elections from North Kashmir’s Baramulla, said he was awaiting his security cover and accommodation. “Right now, I am staying in a security zone, but I have not been allotted any security. Maybe I will get it after the scrutiny of my papers. I will get personal security and vehicle,’’ he said. Officials said over 40,000 additional paramilitary forces are being deployed for the polls. This is apart from 16,000 central forces, which were retained in Kashmir for the polls after the annual Amarnath yatra to south Kashmir Himalayas concluded in July.

were leaders of the masses. “Looking at today’s politics we have ended apartheid in South Africa, we have ended caste-based untouchability in India but they have invented new apartheid and new untouchability in the form of political untouchability.

SC decision on quota in job promotion welcome to ‘certain extent’: Mayawati

Lucknow : Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said the Supreme Court’s decision on Wednesday regarding quotas in job promotions for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe employees was “welcome to a certain extent”. In its order, the fivejudge constitution bench said states do not need to collect quantifiable data on the backwardness of Dalits and tribals for giving them quota in job promotions. “…Today’s verdict has allowed the Centre and states the freedom to implement it (quota in promotions) or not as they were before 2006. “There is also no condition for the states to collect the data of backwardness, the provision that was there in 2006,” Mayawati said.

Growing threats in the global economy

A decade after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the world economy is back on shaky ground. Tariff wars are making headlines but the underlying problem is a failure to tackle the imbalances and inequities that led to the crisis in the first place. Since 2008, leading central banks have pumped trillions of dollars into the global economy. The big commercial banks at the centre of the crisis have recapitalized and financial markets have rebounded; government spending, which initially helped stabilize the global economy after the crisis, has been squeezed; and wages have stagnated. This economic mix has failed to generate robust recoveries in advanced economies, and with debt levels higher than ever and income gaps widening, more and more people feel anxious about future prospects. The arc of politics has bent accordingly. Emerging economies were also hit by financial shockwaves but recovered more quickly, declaring themselves decoupled from the problems of the advanced world. In reality, much of their recovery was dependent on the liquidity splurge in advanced economies, triggering a borrowing spree, particularly by the corporate sector, as investors sacrificed caution in search of yield. Though advanced economies have not done enough individually or together to rebalance the global economy, the worry now is that normalizing monetary policy could send shockwaves through capital and currency markets in developing countries. The damage is already apparent in some emerging economies but there are many others in a vulnerable position. Mitigating the problem is likely to be all the more difficult given the failure of post-crisis reforms. The financial crisis revealed the difficulties for policy makers when banks become “too big to fail” but in our hyperglobalized world, the accumulation of concentrated economic power is not confined to financial markets. Global trade is dominated by big firms, including through their organisation and control of global value chains. The spread of these chains contributed to a very rapid growth of trade from the mid-1990s up to the financial crisis, with developing countries seeing the fastest growth, including trading more with each other. Participation in these chains seemed to promise a path to higher value-added tasks and more diversified economies. This has rarely happened, and where it has, notably in the case of China, the policies that made it possible are now being presented as a source of disruption to the trading system, requiring reforms to the World Trade Organization to ensure other developing countries cannot follow suit.

Shahid on Arjun Reddy remake: The character is very fascinating for me as an actor

New Delhi : “I wanted to try this part and see what I can do with this. I was curious enough to take it on and excited enough to not let it go.” The Batti Gul Meter Chalu actor said he thoroughly enjoyed Arjun Reddy as a viewer. “I usually don’t watch too many films in Telugu and it surprised me with its tonality, rawness, simplicity and the fact that it was so real and believable. The character is very fascinating for me as an actor because the emotional arc… is very original. I loved it and Vijay Deverakonda, who played Arjun, did it so well,” Shahid said. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the remake will go on floors next month. The original film, starring Vijay and Shalini Pandey in the lead, revolves around a medical student who falls in love with his junior and how their relationship evolves. Shahid, who is the son of veteran actors Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem, has done many romantic films in his career. He made his acting debut in 2003 with Ishq Vishk, after which he featured in movies like Vivah, Jab We Met, Kaminey, Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, R… Rajkumar”, Haider, Udta Punjab and Padmaavat. There are always a lot of hopes riding on actors today. Asked if this adds to the pressure, Shahid said: “My own hopes are riding on me. I have been doing this for 15 years. Now I am a professional at it and understand what comes with it. There is a drive from within to always do your best. “Once you really give a lot of time to what you do, and if you are passionate about it and have that need to improve upon yourself all the time — which is very intrinsic to anybody who is successful… That need and desire must be there to improve, rediscover and keep doing new stuff… Then it comes naturally.” Ultimately, to him, it does not feel like pressure. “You want to do your best, and I always feel like that,” said Shahid, who agrees that attaining stardom comes with a price tag attached to it.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Asia Cup 2018: MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik were adjudged LBW out by the umpire but the replays showed that the ball was missing stumps.

Can’t talk about few things because I don’t want to get fined, says MS Dhoni on umpiring errors

dubai : Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who took over the captaincy role once again against Afghanistan on Tuesday in the Asia Cup Super Four encounter, indirectly lamented the incorrect decisions made by the umpire in the course of the match. Needing 253 to win, India were bowled out for 252 with Rashid Khan dismissing Ravindra Jadeja in the final over, as the match ended in a tie. Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, the 37-year-old said that Indian batsmen need to work on shot selection. “We got off to a very good start with the bat, but the wicket slowed down over the course of the game, so someone should have continued with the bat. Shotselection is something that we need to work

on,” the wicketkeeperbatsman said. He further went on to add that he does not wish to discuss a few things as he would get fined. “There were a couple of run-outs, and a few things we can’t talk about because I don’t want to get fined for it. It’s good that it’s a tie, but they played really well,” he said. Dhoni, who was captaining India for the 200th time in an ODI, was adjudged LBW for 8 on a delivery Javed Ahmadi. Dhoni stepped out of the crease with long strides, which gave the impression that the ball might have spun down leg. But the umpires raised his fingers. With India left without a review, Dhoni had to walk back. The replays confirmed that it was indeed missing leg stumps by quite some distance.

In Gujarat, Anand village tense after deputy sarpanch dies in communal clash

Vadodara : Heavy police force was deployed at Kherda village of Anand district on Wednesday after the deputy sarpanch of the village, who was injured in a communal clash, died on Sunday, triggering tension in the area. Around 100 personnel, including those from State Reserve Police, were deployed at the village. According to the police, an altercation took place between members of two communities on Sunday during a Ganesh idol immersion procession. The situation, however, spiralled out of control on Monday when a clash took

place between the two communities allegedly over a “controversial” Gujarati song being played on loudspeakers during the immersion procession on Sunday.
