Agency Bengaluru : Krunal Pandya on Saturday became the costliest uncapped buy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) history, going for a whopping Rs 8.8 crore to Mumbai Indians as rookie players - both Indian and overseas - turned overnight millionaires in the auction here. From India’s U-19 World Cup stars to domestic and foreign recruits, uncapped players were the sought-after lot for the eight franchises. Little-known Jofra Archer from the West Indies attracted Rs 7.2 crore winning bid from Rajasthan Royals. The 22-year-old all-rounder has had a decent stint for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash and plays first-class cricket for Sussex in England. Krunal going to Mumbai was expected but not the astronomical figure he went for, surpassing Pawan Negi who was bought by Delhi Daredevils

SS News Ahmedabad: In its history of 70 years, the Municipal Transport Committee has for the first time passed the transport manager’s draft budget for 2018-19 without making a single change in its size and proposals. The Committee has retained its size at Rs 508.17 crore. The committee has also decided to shift 300 employees of the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services

to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation after the civic body decided to give the transport body a loan of Rs 331 crore. Earlier, the AMTS had moved 422 employees to the AMC. Committee chairman Chandrapraksh Dave on Thursday said that by diverting its employees, the AMTS will be able to save Rs 30 crore in terms of salary payment. Dave added that of the AMTS fleet of 816

buses, 750 are plying on the road currently. Of the 750 buses, 606 belong to private operators while 210 to the AMTS. He has claimed that there was a 91.91 per cent fleet utilisation in 2017-18. Dave said that for the improvement of the fleet, 300 old buses have been replaced in the current year to reduce pollution levels. He added that the transport body had not proposed any new projects in

the budget because the AMTS wanted to finish the incomplete projects from the current year which include redesigning of the 65 year old Lal Darwaja bus terminal, reduce pressure of vehicular traffic during peak hours etc. “The project had slowed down last year because of procedural delays and lack of necessary permission from agencies like Archaeological Survey of India,” Dave said.

New Delhi : Indian pacers maintained their composure under pressure to guide their team to a 63-run win over South Africa in Johannesburg, thus denying them a clean sweep. Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla’s 119-run stand had raised South African

hopes of victory but they suffered a late collapse. From 124/1, they were all out for 177 chasing a 241run target. Although conditions remained difficult for batting, the pitch appeared to pose fewer hazards from unpredictable bounce than earlier in

the match. But Indian bowlers, despite being dominated for most part of the first two session, maintained their composure to take their team towards a historic win. Catch full cricket score and highlights of India vs South Africa, 3rd Test, Day 4 here.

New Delhi : Procedural reforms are not enough to root out corruption, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday, adding that people also have to change their habits to eliminate the menace.Singh stated that the intention of the Narendra Modiled government on

corruption cannot be questioned and the prime minister was trying hard to root the menace out from the country.“In our personal interactions, the prime minister always emphasises that till corruption is not eliminated, how can we fight poverty and other issues,” Singh

said while releasing a book titled “On the Trail of the Black” in New Delhi.Singh further said the prime minister’s decision in this government’s first cabinet meeting to form a SIT to retrieve black money, as ordered by the Supreme Court, shows his intent to end corruption.“It is

true that till corruption is present, it is not possible to achieve the development target we have set. And we need to accept this reality that when income disparity increases so does social unrest, which is a matter of concern for all of us,” the Union Home minister said.According to him, the Modi-led

government is battling through corruption the Benami Property Act. He also pointed out that the Centre has also saved Rs 65,000 cr by introducing DBT, adding that E-tendering and e-procurement were also implemented. Commenting on the discussion over digitisation and

procedural changes, he said, “I think, as much as possible, procedural reforms will be made by us to minimise corruption. But I do not believe that by only reforming or changing procedures corruption can be stopped. Besides procedural reforms, tendency needs to be changed,” he said.

He believes that the change in mindsets can be brought about via education and people from whom others can draw inspirations. He also urged NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant and others, who were present on the occasion, to work to bring changes in people’s habits.

Padmaavat protests: Karni Sena must be punished and banned The Karni Sena was founded in 2006 by Lokendra Singh Kalvi, son of the late Kalyan Singh Kalvi, the former Union cabinet minister who led a massive Rajput agitation against the Sati ban following the Roop Kanwar episode in 1987. Lokendra, however, has failed to match his father’s stature. He tried his luck in politics but lost elections twice, and has been in and out of the BJP and Congress. He is now with the BJP although he had once led a violent agitation against Vasundhara Raje in 2003. The 62-yearold spent a few years in the wilderness in the late ‘90s and early 2000s when he launched, along with Devi Singh Bhatti, a powerful BJP MLA and Rajput leader from Bikaner, a proreservation agitation for the economically weak of all castes. Their rallies got good support and, encouraged by it, both left the BJP and floated a party, the Social Justice Front, which contested the 2003 assembly polls in over 60 seats. But only Bhatti won, which later led to the disbanding of the party and both of them returning to the BJP. Between Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upbeat and statesman-like speech in Davos and the 69th Republic Day Parade that will be witnessed by leaders of all 10 Asean nations (here to be special guests at the event and also attend a crucial and commemorative Asean-India

summit), came the Karni Sena’s violent protest over the release of Padmaavat. Gurugram and other parts of the state of Haryana weren’t the only ones to witness this protest. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan did too, but the violence in Gurugram was hard to ignore. It happened not very far away from the Indian capital, in a satellite city that sees itself as the future, a wonder of glass and chrome that is home to multinational companies and their managers. Yet, all it took to bring a place that calls itself millennium city to its knees — schools shut, pubs and shops closed, offices sparsely attended, traffic choked — was an angry bunch uncivilised of and uncivil men protesting the cinematic portrayal of a mythical queen whose existence remains a matter of debate. And so, visiting heads of state from Asean countries arrived to headlines not about their arrival or India@ Davos, but about the attack on a school bus by brave Rajputs from the Karni Sena. Law and order is a state subject in India and yet again, the government of the state of Haryana has shown itself inept at handling an issue that just needed a firm hand. It’s entirely possible that the firm hand was not used because the protestors share the same Right-wing sensibilities as the party in power.

3 / Dt. 28-01-2017,Sunday, Ahmedabad GOLD! Always believe in your role. You’ve got the power to know you’re indestructible... NASA’s Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) instrument is successfully heading into orbit – after the Ariane 5 rocket lifting it into space worryingly lost its radio link with Earth. The GOLD probe will investigate how space weather and Earth’s magnetic field affects terrestrial weather conditions. It’s the first NASA science mission to rely on a commercially hosted payload. By that the American agency means its instrument is attached to SES14, a private-sector communications satellite that was put into orbit by said Ariane 5 rocket this week. After the rocket blasted off into the skies, it lost its radio connection with ground control. Its telemetry signal vanished nine minutes into its flight at 7.20pm in Kourou, French Guiana, where it was launched, on Thursday. However, Luxembourg-based SES confirmed in a state-

ment on Friday “that it has successfully established a telemetry and telecommand connection to its SES-14 spacecraft and is setting up a new orbit raising plan now.” SES-14 will thus reach the geostationary orbit only four weeks later than originally planned. The spacecraft is, apparently, “in good health, all subsystems on board are nominal, and the satellite is expected to meet the designed life time.”So it looks as though NASA’s GOLD mission is still going ahead, albeit four weeks behind schedule. The GOLD instrument is an imaging spectrograph weighing in at just over 36 kilograms (80 pounds). It will capture ultraviolet images to monitor changes in temperature and the chemical composition of Earth’s atmosphere.

However, she erred in her serve and then committed a couple of errors to allow Ratchanok lead 8-5. Saina won an exceptional rally next but Ratchanok produced a brilliant straight smash and a cross court drop to move to 10-7. Saina committed another service error but rode on her drop and body line returns to keep within touching distance at 11-13. She soon drew parity after Ratchanok went wide and then grabbed a 14-13 lead when the Thai player went long. BCCI Acting Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary on Saturday welcomed Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) back in the Board’s fold and said decks have been cleared for Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium (SMS) to host Royals home games in the upcoming IPL. “There were two impediments over RCA and the ground in Jaipur. Now, RCA is back into the fold. “A recce has been done at the SMS and the court has ordered termination of lease and it will now be extended till the end of the IPL. So, I would like to welcome Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals,” Shukla said. A total of 580 cricketers will be up for sale in the twoday auction starting today, but Shukla said their main emphasis is on domestic players.

Stokes was bought for Rs 14.5 crore (USD 2.28 million) by Rising Pune Supergiants during the last auctions, and proved to be a worthy buy with his all-round performance taking the team to the final. There were multiple bids from Kings XI Punjab, Chennai Super Kings but Steve Smith, Stokes’ captain at the Pune franchise, wanted him desperately and thus his owners respected his wish. “As far as we are concerned the ECB has cleared him for auction. We

are prepared for legal consequences too. He will be a very important part of the team. We are like a start-up company. We are restarting, we needed an all-rounder and hence we picked up Stokes,” Royals executive chairman Ranjit Borthakur said. Another predictable aspect was Australian players getting premium bids with Mitchell Starc being picked by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 9.60 crore (USD 1.5 million). The other big buy among the 16 marquee players was Glenn Maxwell, who was back in the Delhi Daredevils fold after five years for a record Rs 9 crore (USD 1.41 million) after intense bidding. DD had the last laugh when KXIP refused to use their RTM card. While KKR decided to let go Gautam Gambhir at Rs 2.80 crore (USD 440,000) to Delhi Daredevils, they used their RTM to buy back Chris Lynn for Rs 9.60 crore (USD 1.51 million). “It is keeping in mind conditions in Kolkata. The playing conditions and wicket has changed quite drastically.

Watch: Gautam Gambhir has a touching message for KKR fans as he returns to Delhi Daredevils

New Delhi : On Saturday, Gautam Gambhir who was released by Kolkata Knight Riders had a homecoming of sorts after seven years as he returns to his hometown franchise Delhi Daredevils. Gambhir will look to work with Aussie and Delhi Daredevils coach Ricky Ponting to help the capital’s franchise win its first IPL trophy. In an emotional video, Gautam Gambhir said he would miss the Kolkata and Eden and said it was time to turn it around for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. IPL Auctions: Story so far Indian players dominated the bidding wars as KL Rahul and Manish Pandey laughed their way to the bank with multi-million dollar deals but England all- rounder Ben Stokes once again emerged the costliest buy in the IPL auctions, here today. Despite all the off-field controversies, Stokes was snapped up for a whopping Rs 12.5 crore (USD 1.96 million) by Rajasthan Royals after Kings XI Punjab, Chennai Super Kings also engaged in

a fierce bidding war. The franchises were smart in their choices with most of the current India players attracting significant interest. Stylish opener Rahul and middleorder batsman Pandey bagged deals worth Rs 11 crore (USD 1.73 million) from Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively. With their prices sky-rocketing, the two players’ original franchises RCB and KKR didn’t use their Right To Match (RTM) cards. The Karnataka players had a field day at the auctions with India discard Karun Nair also triggering a bidding war before Kings XI Punjab got him for Rs 5.60 crore.

Kedar Jadhav, one of Mahendra Singh Dhoni ‘Go To Man’ during his last stint as India captain, also fetched a healthy price of Rs 7.80 crore for his all-round qualities of batting, round-arm off-spin and back-up wicket-keeping. He was snapped by the Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings. Chennai, however, didn’t bid vigorously for Ravichandran Ashwin, who will now ply his trade for Kings XI Punjab at a salary of Rs 7.60 crore. Interestingly, Chennai Super Kings roped in Harbhajan Singh at his base price of Rs 2 crore (USD 315,000). But none came close to Stokes, who has been struck

This simple technology has transformed Gujarat farmlands into an oasis

SS News | Ahmedabad

As I cross the bridge over the Narmada canal, the landscape begins to morph from fields to fallow land with just an odd smattering of vegetation. By the time I enter Sami taluka in North Gujarat’s Patan district, the land appears distinctly denuded and encrusted with salt. This district receives no more than 650 mm of annual rainfall, compressed into a few days. And when it

does rain, the farmland gets inundated with water as the impermeable layer of saline soil prevents water from percolating. For the rest of the year, marginal and small farmers face a drought-like situation: borewells, ponds, check dams and canals prove inadequate sources of irrigation. In the midst of this dreary landscape is Mubarakpura village, a veritable oasis with a blanket of green from wheat, cumin and dill fields. It is hard to be-

lieve that just 12 years ago, the farmland here was a barren stretch during winter and waterlogged in monsoon. With me is Biplab

Ketan Paul, an Ahmedabad-based innovator whose irrigation system, bhungroo (‘straw’ or ‘hollow pipe’ in Gujarati), based on

rainwater harvesting, has revolutionised the lives of farmers here. The system simply and expertly captures standing water during rains, thus freeing arable land from waterlogging while recharging groundwater to use for irrigation during the lean season. We enquire about Sankhuben, who was part of the first group of five women to own and manage bhungroo in Mubarakpura village in 2006. We are told that all five

Don’t allow parliamentary secretaries in Gujarat: Congress to governor

The Supreme Court, in its July 26, 2017 order, had held that a state government has no right to appoint a parliamentary secretary, Gohil said. SS News | Ahmedabad Senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil on Saturday wrote to Gujarat Governor O P Kohli, saying he shouldn’t allow the BJP government in the state to appoint Parliamentary Secretaries. Gohil claimed that Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was planning to appoint parliamentary secretaries to appease some disgruntled BJP MLAs who could not find place

in the ministry. The governor must not give his assent for these appointments as the post is unconstitutional and it will amount to a contempt of court, the Congress leader said.

The Supreme Court, in its July 26, 2017 order, had held that a state government has no right to appoint a parliamentary secretary, Gohil said. “To contain

dissatisfaction in his party, the chief minister, despite being aware of the Supreme Court’s order, is talking about appointing a number of parliamentary secretaries which is against Constitution and will amount to a contempt of court,” the Congress leader said. Past BJP governments in Gujarat appointed parliamentary secretaries to favour party MLAs, he said. “It is learnt that the BJP is going to

appoint parliamentary secretaries to manage growing dissent in the party,” Gohil claimed. The issue of legal status of parliamentary secretaries came to the fore recently when President Ram Nath Kovind approved disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs in Delhi upon the recommendation by the Election Commission. The EC said the post of parliamentary secretary which they held was an ‘office of profit’.

and diesel, the cost of petrol, for an example, will rise by 78 paise per litre if it costs Rs77.71 currently. This same formula will be applied on diesel prices too. An ordinance proposal towards applying

cess on petrol and diesel was brought to the state cabinet on January 4. ynamic pricing Revision of fuel prices on a daily basis considering change in international crude prices is known as dynamic pricing and it was implemented in India in mid-June last year. The decision was meant to ensure that consumers benefit from any reduction in international oil prices and are protected from sudden hikes by spreading them in small doses. However, ever

since dynamic pricing on petrol and diesel was implemented, massive rise in petrol and diesel cost has been witnessed. Now, slapping a 1% cess will further aggravate the situation for the common man, said sources. Petrol price can go upto Rs80 per litre Considering the consistent rise in the cost of crude oil in the international market, the cost of petrol is expected to rise upto Rs80 per litre. Similalry, the impact on the diesel prices will be similar, said sources.

Petrol, diesel to cost more from midnight on Sunday

Bhopal: Petrol and diesel will cost more in Madhya Pradesh starting from 12.01 am on Sunday. The state government will be collecting one per cent cess on the retail price of petrol and diesel. In accordance to the notification, the amount collected under this cess will be deposited in the treasury under

an independent head and will be utilised only on building transport infrastructure including roads and on metro projects. The impact With one percent additional cess on retail price of petrol

women have hired a car to visit Ahmedabad on the eve of Uttarayan, a kite festival. Bhungroo has brought more than economic prosperity to these women — it has empowered them. “My family could only grow bajri and jowar during monsoon and we earned 20,000 to 25,000 every year. I had two children to feed and educate, my husband migrated for daily wage work and I had loans to pay,” says Sankhuben when I talk to her over the phone.

But after bhungroo was installed in the village, she has been able to grow crops over two seasons. “I planted kharif crops that did not get destroyed by waterlogging and I was able to grow jeeru (cumin) and gehun (wheat) during winter.” Cumin is a profitable herb. “I repaid my debts, freed my land, my husband returned to farming and today I earn over 1.5 lakh a year,” says Sankhuben.
