Pakistan to invite PM Modi for SAARC summit in Islamabad: Report

New Delhi : Pakistan Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be invited to Islamabad for the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit, Dawn reported. The previous summit in 2016 was cancelled after India backed out following the terrorist attack on an Army camp in Uri where 19 soldiers died. The last summit of the leaders of the eight SAARC countries was convened in

Kathmandu in late 2014. Recalling Prime Minister Imran Khan’s remarks that if India took one step forward, Pakistan would take two, Foreign Office Spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal pitched for dialogue with New Delhi to solve all contentious issues. “We fought a war with India, relations cannot be fixed quickly,” Faisal said. So far, India’s refusal to engage Pakistan unless Islamabad addressed its concerns on cross-border terrorism

‘Family-ruled’ TRS and Congress playing ‘friendly match’ in Telangana: PM Modi

Nizamabad : Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday accused the TRS and Congress of perpetuating family rule and said the two parties were playing a “friendly match” in Telangana elections. Reaffirming the BJP’s commitment to inclusive growth, Modi, addressing his first election rally in the state, said vote bank politics has harmed development like “termites”. “The chief minister of Telangana and his family think they can get away with doing no work like the Congress… They have adopted the style of the Congress which ruled for 50-52 years without doing anything. But that cannot happen now,” he told an election rally in

Nizamabad, as he took the poll battle to caretaker CM K Chandrasekhar Rao’s turf. Nizamabad is represented by Rao’s daughter K Kavitha in the Lok Sabha. Recalling that Rao had served as a minister in the UPA government, Modi said the TRS chief did his “apprenticeship” under the Congress. “Congress and TRS are two faces of the same coin. Both parties are competing against each other on who tells more lies. “TRS and Congress are family-ruled parties playing a friendly match in Telangana polls,” he said, adding it was a “big joke” that UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi assailed the TRS for being a “family party” at an election rally last week.

has remained a sticky issue for holding the 19th SAARC summit. SAARC Summits are usually held biennially hosted by a member state in alphabetical order. The member state hosting the summit assumes the Chair of the Association. Besides India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Afghanistan also declined to participate in the 2016 Islamabad meet. The Maldives and Sri Lanka are the seventh and eighth members of the initiative.

Why doesn’t PM highlight govt’s achievements in Parliament, asks Ghulam Nabi Azad Jaipur : Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not highlight his government’s achievements in the Parliament. “Why doesn’t the prime minister speak about the achievements in the Parliament? Why is he highlighting the achievements in desert areas? Because lies cannot be said in Parliament and there is no one to verify his claim in the desert,” Azad told reporters at the Congress office here. He said Modi was the first prime minister of the country who did not present the account of his foreign visits in the House. “Whenever a prime minister returns from a foreign visit,

he briefs the Parliament about the visits and his meetings… But Modi never tells that to the Parliament. Parliamentary traditions are being broken,” the leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said. Azad said Modi did not reply to any questions in the Parliament. “If he works so much, then why doesn’t he speak in the Parliament?” On the other hand, the Congress targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its manifesto for the

Rajasthan Assembly election, saying it was a document of illusion. “The BJP has just presented an illusion. Instead of this, the party should have presented the reality of the 665 promises made in the 2013 elections,” Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said. He termed Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley a “blog minister” and said the public had already rejected Vasundhara Raje as chief minister. Surjewala also released facts related to the agriculture sector in the state, saying 62 per cent of the farmers’ families were debtridden. He wondered if Jaitley and Raje could waive off Rs 2.63 lakh crore of a handful of industrialists, then why not the debt of farmers.

Had I asked Centre, would have had to install Lone govt, says Malik; PDP, NC laud J&K governor

New Delhi : Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has come in for praise from PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah after he said at an event that he chose to hurriedly dissolve the Assembly since taking advice from the Centre would have led to Sajad Lone forming the government. Mufti said the governor’s decision to refuse to “take dictation” from

Delhi was unprecedented. “Leaving aside the fax machine fiasco, good to see that the governor refused to take dictation from Delhi, rather opted for dissolution of the assembly. This could be unprecedented, given the story of democracy in the state,” she tweeted. Moments after Mufti staked claim to form the government with the support of the National Conference and Congress last Wednesday, People’s

Conference chief Sajad Lone also submitted his bid, claiming support of the BJP and 18 MLAs from other parties. However, Malik soon issued an order dissolving the state assembly, paving the way for fresh elections. Malik said at an event in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior that he chose to dissolve the J&K Assembly instead of obliging either side as he didn’t want to go down in history as a “dishonest” man.

The Pakistan government had invited a host of Indian leaders for the ceremony, including Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Punjab CM Amarinder Singh.

Navjot Sidhu reaches Pakistan, says Kartarpur corridor will ‘erase enmity between two nations’

New Delhi : In sharp contrast to Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s polemic on Pakistan regarding crossborder terrorism during the foundation stone laying ceremony of Kartarpur corridor, his minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday said it would help promote peace between the two countries. Sidhu, who reached Pakistan to take part in the groundbreaking ceremony, called

Kartarpur a “corridor of infinite possibilities”. The 4-km-long corridor will

connect Dera Baba Nanak in India’s Gurdaspur district with Gurdwara Kartarpur

Sahib Narowal in Pakistan. The corridor will provide visa-free access to Indian Sikh pilgrims to the final resting place of Guru Nanak Sidhu thanked Pakistan PM Imran Khan for making the corridor possible, saying it was a happy moment for the Sikh community. “This will erase enmity between the two nations. The seed Imran Khan had sown three months ago has become a plant,” he told the media at Wagah.

PM takes dig at Akbaruddin Owaisi over ‘CM has to bow before us’ comment Hyderabad : Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday sought to appeal to Telangana pride when he referred to AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi’s recent remark that whoever became the chief minister of Telangana or undivided Andhra Pradesh had to bow before his party. Addressing a poll rally at Mahbubnagar, Modi asked the people whether they would vote for someone who bows at the feet of some leader. “A leader recently said whoever became the chief minister of Andhra

P r a d e s h - Te l a n g a n a had to be at his feet (kadmon ke neeche). You fought for Telangana for your self-respect. Will you want a CM who bows at the feet of some leader instead of the people of Telangana,” he asked. Owaisi made the remarks during an election rally here Friday. Seeking re-election from Chandrayangutta segment, he had said (previous) chief ministers have always sought the support of All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the party would be the kingmaker again in the upcoming elections.

IndiGo’s move reflects headwinds industry faces

IndiGo roused people on Sunday as it disclosed that all its passengers will have to pay extra for web check-in starting 14 November, and that check-ins at airports will remain free. The step, announced on Twitter, caused an explosion of public rage on social media, prompting the government to take notice and order a review. The airline, however, appeared to have backtracked a day later in the face of sustained public fury, saying it has not changed its web check-in policy, and that passengers will not compulsorily have to pay for all seats but only those that come with extra facilities such as more legroom. It said also that there is no charge applicable on web check-ins. Charging passengers who choose their seats in advance is not a new phenomenon as it offers an avenue to airlines to grow their ancillary revenue, especially in India where intense competition, high fuel prices and a weak rupee have put airline margins on a squeeze. But what has rattled all is IndiGo’s proposal to charge any passenger who uses the internet for advance checkin of their flights. Globally, several airlines charge passengers for services that can range from choosing one’s seat to extra baggage or in some cases carry-on baggage, priority handling, buying tickets online and meals. IndiGo’s move on web check-ins, however, seems counterintuitive as carriers, especially budget ones, tend to prefer travellers who arrive at airports with boarding cards in their hands or those who use self check-in kiosks at airports. Passengers who fail to do so are even charged for getting their boarding cards printed at airport counters. This is for several reasons, the key being it helps to avoid long queues at airport counters, which means less manpower being deployed and cost savings, while also ensuring operational efficiencies and on-time departure of flights. The civil aviation ministry said it has taken note that airlines are now charging for web check-in for all seats, it said on its Twitter account. “We are reviewing these fees to see whether they fall within the unbundled pricing framework, it said. To be sure, the Indian government does not regulate airfares, leaving it to the forces of market dynamics. However, a spokesperson for the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said it is looking into the IndiGo issue. IndiGo’s attempt to shore up its ancillary revenue mirrors a wider malaise in the Indian civil aviation industry.

Mission Mangal: Don’t think five heroes can work together, says Akshay Kumar

I don’t think five heroes will come together. I don’t think so. But when I approached them they were very happy with their roles and were ready to do the film, he added. When asked why do heroes have that apprehension, Akshay said he is not aware, as from his end, he has done several multi-starrers.

You would not put things in boxes. Like I would not tell my child to

not cry like a girl. That’s ridiculous. If he wants to cry, he should cry. I wouldn’t tell him, ‘Don’t walk or dance like a girl.’ “I was told these things in my school, by my teachers. They are all stuck in boxes. You are meant to be in a certain way. I have been tormented to a point where I went to a speech therapist to change my voice, to bring a baritone, the director said. Karan was in conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt at We The Women event on Sunday.

Virat Kohli pulls in the ad dollars despite verbal slips

The 30-year-old cricketer with tattooed arms and coiffured hair currently endorses 21 brand, pushing him into the Forbes’s 2018 list of the world’s 100 highest-paid athletes.

New Delhi : Being the highest profile athlete in the world’s second most populous country, India cricket captain Virat Kohli has built such a formidable brand across the spectrum that even his occasional brash and indiscrete comments fail to tarnish it. Watches, cars, sports shoes, motorbikes, clothes, ride services, tires, snacks, health foods, headphones – even toothbrushes — they have all had the Kohli marketing treatment. The 30-year-old cricketer with tattooed arms and coiffured hair currently endorses 21 brands including Tissot, Audi, Puma, Uber and Hero, pushing him into the Forbes’s 2018 list of the world’s 100 highest-paid athletes. Coming in at No. 83 on the back of his estimated

$24 million income over the previous 12 months, Kohli is the world’s top earning cricketer and comes in ahead of other high-profile athletes such as Novak Djokovic and Sergio Aguero. It is unlikely he would ever be able to challenge the likes of current Forbes’ No.1 Floyd Mayweather or No. 2 Lionel Messi due to cricket’s appeal being mostly tied to a small batch of predominantly Commonwealth countries. However, he could soon eclipse Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the highest earning Indian sportsman ever. Former India cricket captain Dhoni earned $31 million in 2015 as he promoted a series of brands. His success off the pitch is matched by his prowess on it.

Sensex, Nifty clock 2nd straight gains; IT, banking stocks in limelight

Mumbai: The BSE benchmark Sensex rose for the second day, gaining over 150 points on hectic buying in banking and IT stocks as easing concerns on the macroeconomic front bolstered investors’ risk appetite. The broader NSE Nifty too witnessed a rise of 57 points. Market sentiments were boosted by a host of positive factors including stable rupee, falling crude oil prices, subdued retail inflation and steps to improve liquidity situations. Both equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty smartly recovered from day’s low towards the fag-end of the session, but global trade tensions ahead of G20 meet this week and mixed Asian peers kept participants cautious, restricting the gains on domestic bourses. Analysts said that “risk element on inflation is subsiding with rise in oil production, strong rupee and drop in yield; CPI inflation is expected to be under

the control range”. The 30-share Sensex settled 159.06 points, or 0.45 per cent, higher at 35,513.14, while the broader NSE Nifty jumped 57 points, or 0.54 per cent, to finish at 10,685.60. The rally was led by mainly IT and banking stocks. The government’s announcement of Rs 42,000 crore fund infusion in the state-owned banks by March-end kept the participants interested in buying banking stocks.T Meanwhile, the rupee weakened slightly against the US dollar after US President Donald Trump suggested a further tariff hike on Chinese goods. Infosys, Reliance Industries, TCS, HDFC, HDFC Bank, Maruti, SBI, IndusInd Bank and Kotak Bank led the gains on the Sensex, rising up to 2.53 per cent. While, Sun Pharma, Hero MotoCorp, Yes Bank, Wipro, Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel and Tata Steel fell up to 3.34 per cent.

India vs Australia: Michael Clarke has advised the current side to “play tough Australian cricket” in the home Test series against India.

Walking away from aggression will not lead Australia anywhere, says Clarke

New Delhi: Former captain Michael Clarke has advised the current side to “play tough Australian cricket” in the home Test series against India, saying too much emphasis on being nice guys on the field will lead them nowhere. Australian cricketers, who are known to play ruthlessly, have consciously toned down their on-field aggression in the aftermath of the ball-tampering scandal. The mellowed down approach has drawn criticism from World Cup winning skipper Clarke. “Australian cricket, I think, needs to stop worry about being liked and start worrying about being respected. Play tough Australian cricket. Whether we like it or not, that’s in our blood,” Clarke was quoted as saying by Macquarie Sports Radio. “If you try and walk away from it, we

might be the most liked team in the world, we’re not going to win s***. We won’t win a game. Boys and girls want to win.” Clarke cited the example of suspended batsman David Warner, whose aggression brought out the best in him. “It’s his style, he’s very

upfront, in your face. What you see with David Warner is what you get. Your greatest strength can be your greatest weakness. To me I always loved having him in the team I was captaining because he brought that aggression that I wanted.

his phobia. “I have a phobia of traveling in a flight, am scared of it. Now it has reduced considerably. I also have a phobia of getting into a lift. What if it stops and I am stranded alone?” Another thing which the Turbanator is scared of is a swing. “I could never sit on a swing. It scared the living daylights out of me. I feel like vomiting.

Ferry service likely to begin by Dec 7: Plastic wrapper stalled Ro-Pax ferry mid-sea

Ahmedabad : A piece of plastic, which got stuck in one of the pipes that supply seawater for cooling vital parts of RO-Pax ferry, “Voyage Symphony”, had caused the brand new vessel to stall mid-sea with over 400 passengers in Gujarat’s Gulf of Khambhat on November 21, nearly a month after Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had launched the ferry services

between Ghogha and Dahej. Officials said that the ferry is currently undergoing repair work at Bhavnagar, and will become operational only by December 7. A “rootcause analysis”, done following the incident in which the engines of the vessel got heated and were forced to be shut down, revealed that a piece of plastic used to wrap a mixture of areca nut, betel leaf, slaked

lime and tobacco — locally called as “mawa” — got sucked into the pipe that supplies water at a high pressure. “For cooling, we lift water directly from the sea. One of the water-lifting points is near the propeller. The water lifted from here cools the shaft… Because of low depth, the propeller kicks up a lot of mud from the seabed and it gets sucked inside. The diameter of the pipe had already shrunk due to mud depositions. It could be coincidental or our bad luck that a piece of plastic got sucked at a high pressure and it blocked the entire pipe. Water could not reach the shaft and the ballbearings located towards the rear-end of the vessel.

Una Dalit family says govt failed to keep promises, seeks mercy killing

Rajkot : Claiming that the state government had not kept any of its promises made to them, the Dalit victims of the 2016 Una atrocity case on Tuesday wrote to the President of India, seeking permission for mercy killing and also stated that one of them will start a fast-unto-death in Delhi on December 7. Writing on behalf of his family, Vashram Sarvaiya stated in his letter that the state government had failed to keep promises the then chief minister Anandiben Patel had made to his family in the aftermath of the brutal assault on his family and relatives on July 11, 2016. “She had assured us that the state government will allot

five acres land to each of victim, that victims will be given government jobs as per their qualification, that Mota Samadhiyala will be transformed into a developed village. Two years and four months have lapsed since the incident and the government

has fulfilled none of its promises nor has it made any attempt to fulfil them,” Vashram wrote. Vashram, his younger brother Ramesh, and their father Balu and mother Kunvar were among eight Dalits who were allegedly brutally assaulted by ‘gau

rakshak’ (cow vigilantes) in Mota Samadhiyala village of Una taluka in Gir Somnath district on July 11, 2016. The assailants had accused the Dalits of slaughtering a cow but police investigation later concluded that they were merely skinning a carcass of a cow. Videos of the assault had gone viral and led to a national outcry after BSP chief Mayawati raised it on the floor of Rajya Sabha. The incident had also led to statewide protests by Dalits. Scores had attempted suicide and one of them had died. Vashram said the attack had forced them out of their traditional occupation of skinning carcasses.

Germany: Suspect in Dortmund bus attack convicted of attempted murder

US stands with India in its quest for justice for 26/11 victims: Trump Washington : Expressing solidarity with the innocent victims of the 2008 Mumbai attack, President Donald Trump has said the US stands with the people of India in their quest for justice and will never let the terrorists win. A total of 166 people, including six Americans, were killed in the terror attack on November 26, 2008, carried out by 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists over a period of three days. Nine of the attackers were killed by the police while lone survivor Ajmal Kasab was captured and hanged after he was handed down the death sentence by an Indian court. “On the ten-year anniversary of the Mumbai terror attack, the US stands with the people of India in their quest for justice,” Trump tweeted. “The attack killed

166 innocents, including six Americans. We will never let terrorists win, or even come close to winning!” he said. The president’s comments came days after he defended his administration’s decision to stop hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to Pakistan for not doing enough to curb terrorism and criticised Islamabad for offering a hideout to slain alQaeda chief bin Laden in the garrison city of Abbottabad. “We give Pakistan USD 1.3 billion a year… (bin Laden) lived in Pakistan, we’re supporting Pakistan, we’re giving them USD 1.3 billion a year — which we don’t give them any more, by the way, I ended it because they don’t do anything for us, they don’t do a damn thing for us,” Trump said.

Berlin : A German court on Tuesday convicted the suspect in last year’s attack on the Borussia Dortmund soccer team’s bus of attempted murder and sentenced him to 14 years in prison. The Dortmund state court found the defendant, who has been identified only as Sergej W. in line with German privacy rules, guilty of 28 counts of attempted murder and setting off an explosion, news agency dpa reported. Dortmund defender Marc Bartra and a police officer were injured when three explosions hit the team’s bus as it left a hotel in the city of Dortmund for a Champions League game on April 11, 2017. Tuesday’s verdict ended an 11-month trial that featured testimony from players and thencoach Thomas Tuchel. Prosecutors alleged that W. took out a loan to place a bet that Borussia Dortmund’s shares would drop in value, then bombed the bus and tried to disguise the attack as Islamic terrorism. Dortmund is the only German soccer club whose shares are listed on the stock exchange. The blasts shattered a window of the bus and hit Bartra with shrapnel, leaving the team without the Spanish defender for about a month after he had to undergo surgery on a broken bone in his wrist. The verdict fell short of prosecutors’ call for a life sentence. However, defence lawyers had argued that W. should be convicted only of setting off an explosion and given a much lower sentence.
