Those who imposed Emergency and those who opposed it are now together, says PM New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached Uttar Pradesh’s Sant Kabir Nagar on Thursday, will inaugurate a two-day Kabir Mahotsav organised by the Union Ministry of Culture at Maghar in the district. The festival is being organised to mark the 500th death anniversary of mystic poet and saint, Kabir Das. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture Mahesh Sharma will also attend the

inauguration ceremony. In 2014, PM Modi had chosen Varanasi, 200 km from Maghar, to kickstart his party’s election campaign in UP. Maghar is known as ‘Gateway to Hell’ as locals believe that anyone who dies here goes straight to hell. It was this superstition that the 15th century poet and mystic Kabir — known for his message of tolerance — had sought to dispel when he travelled to Maghar to breathe his last. In a sharp attack at Samajwadi Party and former UP

‘India preparing for cut in oil imports from Iran’

New Delhi : India’s oil ministry has asked refiners to prepare for a ‘drastic reduction or zero’ imports of Iranian oil from November, two industry sources said, the first sign that New Delhi is responding to a push by the United States to cut trade ties with Iran. India has said it does not recognise unilateral restrictions imposed by the United States, and instead follows UN sanctions. But the industry sources said India, the biggest buyer of Iranian oil after China, will be forced to take action to protect its exposure to the U.S. financial system. India’s oil ministry held a meeting with refiners on Thursday, urging them to scout

for alternatives to Iranian oil, the sources said. “(India) has asked refiners to be prepared for any eventuality, since the situation is still evolving. There could be drastic reduction or there could be no import at all,” said one of the sources, who has knowledge of the matter. Indian oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan told reporters in Mumbai that the country would attend to its interests while deciding on oil imports. “We know (that) to have a healthy energy mix, we can get oil from anywhere. The rest depends on geopolitics, and those decisions will be taken based on the situations,” he said. “We will go by our interests.

variety of issues ranging from terrorism, freedom of religion, North Korea, China and more specifically Indo-US relations. She reiterated the US’ stand that Pakistan has become a haven for terror groups and that cannot be tolerated, adding that the US has already delivered the message

to Islamabad. “We share a commitment to defeating terrorism and the hateful ideology that motivates it. The US values Pakistan as a partner but we cannot tolerate the state becoming a haven for terrorists and hope to see a change,” she was quoted as saying by news agancy.

Shouting the BJP slogan “Ebar Bangla” for 2019, he declared the BJP would sweep the Lok Sabha Elections next year in more than 22 seats out of 42. “The noise from here should reach the ears of the Mamata Banerjee government in Kolkata. I just prayed to Maa Tara at Tarapith to bless power to BJP workers to uproot the Mamata Banerjee government from power here. If this government thinks that it would continue to stay in power by

resorting to violence then I challenge that our workers’ sacrifice will bring a revolution here ensuring that your rule will not continue anymore,” Shah said while addressing a BJP rally in memory of three slain party workers at Balarampur in Purulia

Thursday afternoon. Referring to BJP’s victory run in 19 states he elaborated, “If Bengal has to be taken to the path of development, a change has to be brought by eliminating the chit-fund business, cattle-smuggling, bomb-making.

The amalgamation of regional rural banks is poorly planned On 7 June, the Union ministry of finance despatched a letter to the chairmen/managing directors of sponsor banks. The letter indicated that the Union government, in consultation with the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard), had decided to go ahead with phase III of the amalgamation of regional rural banks (RRBs). This will bring down the total number from 56 to 38 and ensure that most of the smaller states have only one RRB, while the larger might have two. There is a lot to be said about the merits of this decision (as well as the previous decisions) of amalgamating RRBs cutting across sponsor banks. First, these banks, when they were set up, were seen as alternatives to cooperatives, adding a touch of professionalism to the local feel a cooperative society provided. They were seen as decentralized solutions for the skewed banking development that was happening across the country, with the south and west being well banked while the north-east, east, and central regions suffered. While we do have large nationalized banks for the purposes of banking services in general, RRBs provide services proximate to the rural customer. There are merits in the argument that size reduces overheads, makes regulation easier and optimizes the use of technology. But what is the additional benefit it creates for customers? Given that these banks are completely state owned, they possibly need to look at whether or not the mergers allow for providing better services to the customer at the margins. I believe that a greater centralization is in fact going to take RRBs away from the customer at the margins. While the merits of that argument can be debated, let us look at the blatant travesty when it comes to corporate governance. This decision is not being taken in unusual times where the banks are in distress and customer interests are to be protected. Even then, it would be the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rather than the government that would take this call. These are decisions taken in cold blood. If that is the case, what is the role of the respective boards of the RRBs, and the boards of the sponsor banks? The government does not seem to be carrying out even a token consultation with the RRBs’ boards. Of course, they are substantially owned by the government. The Union government has a 50% stake, the respective state governments, 15%, and the sponsor banks have a 35% stake. There is no indication that the Union government consulted the respective state governments.

Forget beating Deepika to be highest-paid, Priyanka doing Salman’s Bharat for free?

Mumbai: Reports of Priyanka Chopra being paid a whopping Rs 12 crore to make her Bollywood comeback with Bharat seem to be completely untrue. According to a source close to the film, the actress has not charged a single rupee. “She has generously offered to do the film for free as it is being directed by her friend Ali Abbas Zafar. As far as reports of her being paid Rs 12 crore are concerned, they may be attempts at one-upping Deepika Padukone, whose marketing team, since the release of Padmavaat, has been claiming that she is the highest paid actress in Bollywood. The truth is, even Deepika isn’t getting that kind of money after Padmaavat,” a source says.

commercial and independent cinema. While her films Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu 2, Raanjhaana and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo made her a dependable staple in the Bollywood mainstream, films like Listen Amaya, Adda Nil Battey Sannata in which she plays a strong single mother, and Anaarkali of Aarah in which she plays an unapologetic nautch girl, established her as a bankable actor in the independent film space. Bhasker will be in conversation with Shubhra Gupta, news agancy film critic, and Devyani Onial, National Features Editor, at the Express Adda in Delhi on Thursday.

Kuala Lumpur : Star Indian shuttlers P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the pre-quarterfinals after pulling off contrasting wins in the opening round of the $700,000 Malaysia Open World Tour super 750 tournament in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. Olympic silver-medallist Sindhu, who had skipped the Uber Cup Finals to regain full fitness after claiming a silver at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, took some time to get into the groove before she edged out World No 14 Japan’s Aya Ohori 26-24 21-15 in the

opening round. The third-seeded Indian will meet Malaysia’s Ying Ying Lee on Thursday at the Axiata Arena at Bukit Jalil, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur. In the men’s singles, World No 7 Srikanth, who claimed four titles last season, dumped former World No 2 Jan Jorgensen of Denmark 21-18 21-9 in a 31-minute clash here. Jinson Johnson breaks Sriram Singh’s 42-year-old 800m national mark Chandigarh : Jinson Johnson is on a record-breaking spree. In March, at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, he broke a 23-year old national record in the 1500m and on Wednesday, at the ongoing Inter State Championship in Guwahati, he rewrote a 42-year old national mark in the 800m event. The 27-year-old Army man managed to clock 1:45.65s to bag the gold and in the process erased Sriram Singh’s mark of 1:45.77 set in 1976 at the Montreal Olympics. The effort also earned him a spot in the Asian Games where the qualification guideline specified by the Athletics Federation of India

was 1:47.50s. Manjit Singh, who clocked 1:46.24s, clinched the silver medal while Mohammad Afsal (1:46.79) snared the third spot. Johnson credited his success to improved physical fitness, “I have been improving my physical fitness and the conditions were very good. Before the race, I was not thinking about the gold. I told myself that I will go for the national record,” said Johnson, whose previous best was 1:45.98, recorded two years back. He knew is was a matter of time before he broke Sriram’s record: “My previous personal best timing was not that far away (from Sriram’s).

Toronto : Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy has not talked to disgraced Australian Steve Smith about his cricket return but said on Wednesday his team mate in the Global T20 Canada league is ready for battle. Smith’s career was thrown into turmoil in March for his role in a ball-tampering scandal that took place in South Africa and earned the former Australia captain a 12-month ban from national and state teams. The suspension, however, does not extend to domestic tournaments outside his home nation so the 29-year-old Smith will be on the field for the Toronto Nationals on Thursday for the opening

game of the inaugural Global T20 Canada event. “I’ve spoke to him as to the role I would love for him to play on the team. As to what’s going on in his mind I think only Jesus could tell you what is going on in his mind,” Toronto captain Sammy told a news conference. “But he looks ready.” The game will be Smith’s first since he, vice-captain David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were banned by Cricket Australia for conspiring to scuff up the ball with sandpaper during the third test against South Africa. Smith was not made available to the media in the lead-up to the tournament, but Sammy had nothing but praise for his new teammate.

Glad my first trip to UK has started off well, says Kuldeep Mumbai: Kuldeep Yadav’s match-winning figures of 4/21 ensured India beat Ireland by 76 runs and get off to a perfect start on their long-drawn tour to the United Kingdom. Chasing a daunting target of 209 set by the Indian batsmen, Ireland were off to a good start but it was the introduction of the wrist-spinner which turned the tide in India’s favour as he bamboozled the batsmen with his googlies and stock deliveries. Ireland simply

had no answers as both Yadav and Chahal ran through the Irish middle order. Yadav’s guile was too much for the home team as he returned with his best figures in T20 cricket. Speaking at the post-match presentation Yadav expressed satisfaction and said, “This is my first trip to UK and it has started well. I think the wicket was good to bat on and it was turning a little bit. We bowled variations and tried to bowl in the right areas. Me and Chahal talk

a lot when we bowl. First Chahal bowled and he told me that pitch is little slow. If we use variations nicely it will be difficult for England too.” India captain Virat Kohli had no reason to complain either and said, “Opening combination was excellent. The last over bowled by Ireland was terrific. Great effort by Rohit and Shikhar to put us in the good position. And good strikes from MS, Raina and Pandya in the end. Bowlers did a clinical job too.” Explaining the

Rupee sinks to record low against US dollar, breaches 69-mark Mumbai: The rupee collapsed to a lifetime low of 69.10 against the US dollar by plunging 49 paise in early trade on Thursday as rising crude oil prices deepened concerns about the country’s current account deficit and inflation dynamics. Consistent dollar demand from banks and importers, mainly oil refiners, following higher crude oil prices kept the rupee under pressure. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 68.87 a dollar against 68.61 previously and sank to 69.10 in morning deals, falling 49 paise. Global oil prices have climbed after the US asked its allies to end all imports of Iranian oil by

November. Concerns over supply disruptions in Libya and Canada also pushed prices higher. Higher crude oil prices and a declining rupee are a double whammy for India, forex dealers said. Meanwhile, the benchmark Sensex was down by 90.26 points, or 0.25 per cent, at 35,126.85 in early trade on Thursday.

We are going to be flexible in the next few T-20 matches. It presents the opportunity for the batsmen who don’t get the opportunity to bat. The guys who don’t get a chance too will get an opportunity in the next match. The guys are fine with this decision.”

Second edition of Castrol Super Mechanic records 15 lakh call-ins India : The second edition of the Castrol Super Mechanic contest, launched last year in India, saw an increase of almost 66% in call-ins and 55% increase in the number of mechanics who registered to participate in this unique event. The Castrol Super Mechanic contest is a unique event, which provides mechanics with the opportunity to upgrade their skills, get knowledge and information about the latest trends and technologies in the automotive sector as well as in the lubricant industry. It also provides mechanics with the opportunity to showcase their skills and be recognized on a public platform. Building on the huge success of the event held for two-wheeler mechanics in 2017, the programme has been expanded

this year to include car mechanics as well. However, the car event will be restricted to two cities – Mumbai and Delhi, whereas the two-wheeler event will be conducted in 8 cities (Delhi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore). The contest kicked off in April 2018 with an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) call-in leg in which mechanics were required to answer technical questions related to bike maintenance procedures. Top 600 mechanics from each of the four regions (North, South, East and West) will qualify for the second round where they will have to solve various theoretical and practical problems related to two-wheeler maintenance. Top three qualifiers from each of these regional rounds

will take part in the national final, which will be held in August 2018 for Cars & October 2018 for bikes at Mumbai. Commenting on the second edition of the Castrol Super Mechanic event, Mr. Kedar Apte, Vice President Marketing, Castrol India, said: “We are delighted with the response we have received to the second edition of the Castrol Super Mechanic initiative, as we continue to pursue our mission to upskill mechanics and provide them with a platform to showcase their skills. 3 senior BJP MLAs in Gujarat protest against own government, say many more with them Ahmedabad : Three senior MLAs of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat came out in public late on Wednesday evening expressing their resentment against the BJP government in the state. The three MLAs are from Vadodara district. They have claimed that more than a dozen other MLAs are with them. This was hours after Chief Minister Vijay Rupani flew out the country on a six-day tour. The three MLAs are: Madhu Srivastava from Waghodia constituency, Yogesh Patel from Manjalpur and Ketan Inamdar from Savli. They have asserted that several state ministers and the bureaucracy were not listening to them and are showing a callous attitude

to public representatives. Incidentally, BJP President Amit Shah was in his home state on Wednesday but the MLAs chose to vent their grievances before the media, also claiming that many more legislators were angry with the working of the government. Madhu Srivastava, who is a six-time MLA, said that other MLAs who share the same sentiments will come out in future. “Today, we are three but tomorrow there may be 13 or 23. Today we three, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, have got together. Now let anything happen,” Srivastava said. “Ever since the present government took charge six months ago, the bureaucrats in the state are working at their whims and fancies. And when

Gujarat To Grant Status Of Religious Minority To Jews

During the 45-minute long meeting, Rupani told Netanyahu that “an in principle decision has been taken to grant Gujarati Jews the status of religious minority”. A notification to this effect shall be issued soon by the government, he said. Gujarat has a small Jewish community comprising less than 200 members. we go to meet the ministers on the designated days for us, we are unable to see them,” Srivastava told reporters, as Patel and Inamdar nodded in agreement. Concurring with Srivastava, Yogesh Patel said that their only demand was that when they seek resolution to the issues of their electorate, it must be sorted out, but this was not happening. Asked if they had made a representation to the chief minister about this, Srivastava said, “We are not going to stand in queue (to meet him) if the officials did not allow them.” Ketan Inamdar said their anger was not against the party or the government but with the attitude of the officials. “The government which is trying

to do best for the people should surely have control over the bureaucracy. But it appears that the officials have got thick-skinned,” he said. The BJP swiftly swung in to action, asking senior Cabinet minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama to intervene. “Whatever be the issue, I, Nitin Bhai (Deputy Chief Minister) and Jitubhai Vaghani (state BJP President) will speak to them in person and sort out their issues,” Chudasama said BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said, “The three have been summoned by the state party chief for a meeting in person. We have touched base with them and asked them to put forth their grievances on the right forum.”

Sipping water is scary in Diamond City SURAT: Geeta Paanwala, a housewife in Mughalsarai makes sure she boils RO water in a pot every night, so her family can drink it the next day. When she forgets this, she asks her husband to buy bottles of packaged water. The Paanwalas have been doing this for the last 10 days, since incidents of water contamination

and waterborne diseases began to spread havoc in many parts of the city. Despite the Surat Municipal Corporation’s claims about the ISO quality of water supplied, Geeta is concerned about her family’s health. Geeta’s is not an isolated case. The majority of households in city areas are scared to drink water supplied by the

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), for fear of waterborne diseases. Households in Diamond City, in the worst affected areas where complaints of water contamination are on the rise, or other parts, have started taking precautionary measures such as boiling their drinking water or using bottles of packaged water.

international United Nations: Over 10,000 children killed, maimed in conflicts worldwide in 2017

More than 10,000 children were killed or maimed amid armed conflicts worldwide last year, while others were raped, forced to serve as soldiers or caught in attacks on schools and hospitals, a United Nations report said Wednesday. A total of more than 21,000 violations of children’s rights were reported in 2017 with a sharp increase from the previous year, according to the annual “Children and Armed Conflict” report. The U.N. blames a U.S.-backed Arab coalition fighting in Yemen for at least half of the more than 1,300 child deaths or injuries recorded in that poor nation. They were victims of aerial and ground attacks by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on Houthi rebels opposed to Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

In Supreme Court pick, Donald Trump can push conservative social agenda

Washington : With a second Supreme Court pick less than 18 months into his presidency, Donald Trump is poised to cement conservative control of the court and fire up supporters eager for a rightward shift on divisive social issues. Shortly after Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement on Wednesday, White House officials said Trump had an opportunity to shape US justice for decades to come. “It will further his agenda of remaking the courts,” said one senior White House official. “This is a legacy.” Speaking of the selection at a rally in North Dakota on Wednesday night, Trump said: “We have to pick a great one. We have to pick one that’s going to be there for 40 years, 45 years.” Kennedy’s replacement could be pivotal in paring back abortion rights, potentially even challenging the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973 that gave women a constitutional right to obtain the procedure. Undoing or at least putting more limits on that ruling has been a dream of conservative activists and contributed to conservative Christian support for Trump that helped him win the presidency in 2016.

Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding immersions in the artificial ponds. Washington : US Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement, announced on Wednesday, could put some of his signature rulings in jeopardy, including ones that expanded or preserved gay rights and abortion rights. Kennedy is a conservative, but he joined the court’s four liberals to cast deciding votes on several key social issues, most notably on gay marriage. His successor will be picked by President Donald Trump from a White House list of 25 names recommended by conservative legal activists, and the new justice is likely to take a less liberal tack than Kennedy did on at least some issues. If so, he or she will provide a fifth vote for the court’s conservatives rather than its liberals – and over time reshape the US legal landscape. “It’s extremely likely President Trump is going to appoint someone who is not going to follow Justice Kennedy’s lead in those cases and will go even further in undermining constitutional rights and degrading the rule of law,” said Elizabeth Wydra, president of the liberal-leaning Constitutional Accountability Center. Without Kennedy, she said, the court would have overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case establishing a woman’s right to abortion. It would also have prevented gay people from marrying and ended university admissions programs that take race into account, she said.
