Short News Heavy rains in Delhi, Gurgaon trigger traffic jams; major roads waterlogged

New Delhi/ Gurgaon: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Delhi-NCR through the night with waterlogging disrupting road traffic movement at many places in the national capital and Gurgaon. Rush hour traffic was thrown out of gear in Haryana’s Gurgaon as morning commuters got stuck in traffic snarls, including an over five-kilometer jam on a road between Hero Honda Chowk and Khirki Daula Toll Plaza. Several residents took to Twitter to share their experiences and posted photos of waterlogging and jams. Office-goers in Delhi, too, faced a lot of inconvenience due to traffic disruptions with most opting to use the Delhi Metro rail’s services, which were delayed due to over-crowding. Classes in several colleges were also cancelled. The traffic towards the busy Delhi-Jaipur-Mumbai highway was also disrupted.

Multi-city raids over Bhima Koregaon caste violence, 4 activists held

Pune: Maharashtra police on Tuesday raided the homes of prominent Left-wing activists in several states and arrested at least four of them for suspected Maoist links, sparking a chorus of outraged protests from human rights defenders. The raids were carried out as part of a probe into the violence between Dalits and the upper caste Peshwas at KoregaonBhima village near Pune after an event called Elgar Parishad, or conclave, on December 31, 2017. The arrests are “a dangerous sign of a government that fears it is losing its mandate and is falling into panic. That lawyers, poets, writers, Dalit rights activists and intellectuals are being arrested on ludicrous charges,” award-winning author Arundhati Roy told PTI. Near simultaneous searches were carried out at the residences of prominent Telugu poet Varavara Rao in Hyderabad, activists Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Farreira in Mumbai, trade union activist Sudha Bhardwaj in Faridabad, and civil liberties activist Gautam Navalakha in New Delhi, a senior police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Subsequently, Rao, Bhardwaj and Farreira were arrested. “They have been arrested under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for their alleged naxal activities,” said the police official, without elaborating. Although Navalakha was also arrested, the Delhi High Court ordered police not to take him out of the national capital at least until Wednesday.

NRC row: Supreme Court orders re-verification of 10 per cent people excluded from the draft

New Delhi : Raising doubt over Centre’s proposal to allow a claimant to change his legacy document for inclusion in the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a detailed report from the NRC co-ordinator, Prateek Hajela, as to why those who want to be included in the NRC draft list have to give fresh additional documents. The apex court also ordered reverification of 10 per cent of people excluded from draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. The court said that the re-verification will be a sample survey for its satisfaction. The

court also deferred the scheduled date of August 30 for receipt of claims and objections to the draft NRC, as it pointed out certain contradictions in the Centre’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the filing them. Out of 3.29 crore applicants, 2.89 crore were found eligible for inclusion in the complete draft of NRC, that was released last month. The names of 40.07 lakh applicants did not find a place in the historic document, touted to be a proof of Assamese identity.

BJP such a ‘shameless’ party, doing politics with Atalji’s ashes: Mamata Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mocked the BJP on Tuesday for disrespecting former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee by undertaking the “Atal Kalash Yatra” and trying to gain political mileage out of it. The BJP leadership, in a counter, said Mamata Banerjee should desist from talking much about Vajpayee as she had betrayed him “time and again to serve her own political purpose”. Addressing a rally in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee said, “I have never seen such a shameless party. We (TMC) might have ideological differences but we respect Atalji. They (BJP) are even doing politics with Atalji’s ashes.”

P Chidambaram moves court, accuses CBI of leaking chargesheet to media

New Delhi: Former union minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday moved a Delhi court alleging that the CBI is leaking parts of the chargesheet in the Aircel-Maxis case to the media “to sensationalise” the issue and “make mockery of judicial process”. Special Judge O P Saini issued notice to the agency and sought its response by October 8. In the application, moved by advocates P K Dubey and Arshdeep Singh, the Congress leader alleged that the CBI was not interested in a fair trial in the court of law and only wanted trial by

the media. “Since this court is yet to take cognisance of the charge sheet, it appears that the CBI has clandestinely provided a copy of the same to the newspaper which is publishing the same in instalments only to sensationalise the issue and prejudice the accused named therein even before cognisance is taken by this court. In the view of the above, it is clear that the CBI is not interested in a fair trial in a court of law and only wants a trial by media, which is causing prejudice to the rights of the accused persons, including the appellant herein,” the application said.

New Delhi : The CPI(M) Polit Bureau on Tuesday protested against the country-wide raids and subsequent arrests of left-wing activists, suspected to have Maoist links, calling it a brazen attack on democratic rights and civil liberties. The CPI(M) demanded the withdrawal of the cases against the activists and their immediate release. “The polit bureau of CPI(M) strongly protests the raids conducted by police authorities on the homes of various civil rights and human rights activists and Left intellectuals,” a statement said. The polit bureau statement also said false charges had been levelled on the activists. The raids by Maharashtra Police were carried out as part of a probe into the violence at Bhima Koregaon village, which was triggered by an event called ‘Elgar Parishad’ held in Pune on December 31 last year. According to ANI, five activists have been arrested till now.

New Delhi : M K Stalin succeeded his father, M Karunanidhi, as president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Tuesday. His elevation, which was announced at the party’s General Council meeting at its headquarters Kalaignar Arangam in Chennai, was uncontested. Stalin is the third to head the party, after founder C N Annadurai and Karunanidhi. DMK principal secretary Durai Murugan, meanwhile, took over as treasurer of the party. During the General Council meeting, which was attended by around 4,000 members, the party passed a resolution to urge the Centre to confer the Bharat Ratna on the late Karunanidhi. The party also decided against creating a post for DMK chairperson. Stalin has been associated with the DMK for over five decades. He campaigned for the party ahead of the 1967 Assembly elections when he was just 14 years old. Stalin was instrumental in leading the party’s campaign ahead of the 2016 Assembly elections.

Alapuzha: Visiting the floodravaged areas of Kerala, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday saluted fishermen who played a key role in rescuing those marooned in the deluge. Claiming that the fishermen community in the country was facing a crisis similar to that by the farmers, he said if the Congress comes to power at the Centre, a separate fisheries ministry would be set up. Arriving in Kerala on a twoday visit, Rahul Gandhi spoke to people at relief camps, days after the deadliest deluge in the last 100 years left a trail of destruction and death in the state. At a reception hosted by the Congress in the worst-hit Alapuzha to honour the fishermen community, Rahul Gandhi said the Coast Guard should make use of the services of fishermen for rescue operations in the future. “I am proud to say that through all your difficulties... through all your hardships... whenever

Kerala needed you... you stood up and gave your best. I salute your commitment to the people of Kerala,” the Congress president said. Three thousand fishermen had saved 70,000 lives in the recent floods, he said. Alleging that the fishermen community in the country was facing a crisis similar to that by the farmers, Rahul Gandhi said, “The moment the Congress comes to power at the Centre, we are going to set up a ministry of fisheries.” “God’s own army will have its own ministry. So your problems can be looked after and your words can be heard at the national level,” he said, adding, “I do not want to make fake promises. This is a word of the Congress president.” Along with farmers, fishermen have also helped build the country, Rahul Gandhi said and asserted that it was an “honour” for him to felicitate the fishermen who had saved several lives.

A year after Doklam, lessons not fully learnt

A full year has passed since the 73-day face-off between Indian and Chinese troops in Doklam ended. Last year, on 28 August, India agreed to withdraw its troops from the territory disputed between Bhutan and China in return for the latter stopping its road construction activity. A lot has happened in the last one year, including an attempt to “reset” India-China ties. This is a good moment to look at the learnings from the face-off and the subsequent course of events. First, let us look at the face-off site itself. While the road construction there has been halted, Chinese troops remain stationed in northern Doklam. India’s ministry of external affairs has defined the face-off site narrowly and therefore sees no reason for another effort to confront the Chinese troops in northern Doklam. India’s position, as can be discerned from the depositions of successive foreign secretaries—S. Jaishankar and Vijay Gokhale— before the parliamentary standing committee on external affairs, is that as long as China can be prevented from extending their road towards the Jampheri Ridge, India need not intervene. The extension of the road towards the ridge will have twin implications over the tri-junction point between India, Bhutan and China, and the security of the Siliguri Corridor, a tiny sliver of land that connects India’s north-eastern states to the rest of the country. Even if the status quo on the face-off site is maintained, this newspaper has expressed the concern (goo.gl/kQD4Ug) that a strengthened Chinese position in northern Doklam can carry grave implications for the face-off site too in the future. Second, Doklam was an attempt by China to wean Bhutan away from India. On this count, China has not gained much success. Despite Chinese vice foreign minister Kong Xuanyou’s July visit to Bhutan, Thimphu has given no indication that it wants to dilute the special bilateral relationship with New Delhi. In fact, the reason India came out of Doklam with flying colours was because of Bhutan’s exemplary resilience in the face of China’s threats. Bhutan issued two statements— on 29 June 2017 and 29 August 2017—on the Doklam standoff and endorsed India’s position of returning to the status quo ante in both. The broader Chinese project of gaining a strategic toehold in India’s neighbouring countries has, however, received greater success. Deploying its bottomless pockets and the ability to rapidly deliver infrastructure projects, China has used its flagship Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to gain entry into all the South Asian countries, except Bhutan.

Manto director Nandita Das: It is necessary to engage the audience

Mumbai : Actor-director Nandita Das, who is gearing up for the release of her forthcoming film Manto, says that more than entertaining the audience, it is necessary to engage them with the film. Nandita was interacting with the media here during the third edition of the WCRC Idea-fest 2018 awards on Monday. Talking about audience reaction to trailer of the film, Nandita said, “People used to think that it’s a period film which is set in 1940s and Nandita only makes serious type of films. But with the response to the trailer, we came to know that lot of

people relate themselves with the film. “We often think that there should be only entertainment in a film but I think it is necessary to engage the audience. If the audience gets engaged then they don’t try to figure out whether the film has songs or dance in it.” Talking about the storyline, Das, who previously directed Firaq, said, “It’s a story of the writer and the obstacles of his life and thereasons why he left Mumbai which he used to love so much and later shifted to Lahore (Pakistan) and what kind of stories he wrote in his life so, we have also shown glimpses of his stories.

Deepika Padukone feels there are ‘too many biopics being made’ New Delhi : Deepika Padukone started 2018 with a bang as her film Padmaavat, despite being released amid much controversy, managed to impress the audience. Deepika was all set to share screen space with Piku costar Irrfan Khan in Vishal Bhardwaj’s next, but due to Irrfan’s health, the film has been postponed for now. Meanwhile, the Padmaavat star is yet to announce her next project. Deepika was recently asked about the changing trends in Bollywood at an event in Chennai. She acknowledged that there is a certain sense of repetitiveness in the scripts that are being offered, and that too, biopics. In an interview with The Hindu, Deepika said, “I feel like there are too many biopics being made. In the last few months, I can’t count the number of biopics that we’ve been offered. And they’re all great; they’re very

strong and powerful. But when it comes to a film, after a point, how much are you going to tell me about those struggles? Even a common man on the street has had a similar journey, if you ask me.” Biopics are the flavour of the season. In 2018, the audience has seen quite a few films that were either biopics or based on true incidents. To count a few, Sanju, Soorma, Parmanu, Raazi, Padman, have all released in 2018 and they are all based on true events. With a plethora of biopics in the making, we don’t see this trend dying anytime soon. Among the films that have already been announced, we are yet to watch Manikarnika, Super 30, the Abhinav Bindra biopic and Shakeela among many others. Sanju has broken many records and one can assume that this is certainly a signal for many new biopics as well.

Disha Patani on Hrithik Roshan: He is one of the most dignified people I’ve met Mumbai : Bollywood actor Disha Patani has rubbished reports claiming that Hrithik Roshan flirted with her, calling the superstar a “dignified” person. There were reports that Disha walked out of the project because Hrithik allegedly flirted with her, something that she termed as “childish and irresponsible gossip”. “There is some childish and irresponsible gossip about Hrithik sir and me doing the rounds. I would like to say that it’s completely untrue and in

the minimum interaction that I have had with him, he has been one of the most dignified and joyful people. “It’s my regard for him as a person that is making me even respond to something this trivial. There is no truth in me walking out of any project with him,” Disha told PTI in a statement. The 25-year-old actor said she has high regard for Hrithik and he features amongst the top names on her wish list to work with.

Saif Ali Khan looks quite menacing Pooja Hegde: Imtiaz Ali brings out the best performance in every actor in the first look of Hunter

New Delhi : After playing Sartaj Singh in Netflix’s Sacred Games, Saif Ali Khan has started shooting for his next project, Hunter. Directed by Navdeep Singh, Hunter has Saif playing a Naga Sadhu. His look from the film was captured by Mumbai Mirror and it looks quite intriguing. Sporting dreadlocks and a long beard, Saif is dressed in worn-out clothes here. His dreadlocks are held together by a bandana. This is Hunter’s second schedule after the first schedule was wrapped up in Rajasthan. A source from the set of Hunter told Mirror,

“Saif kicked off work around 9am and the shoot went on till late evening. For the ongoing schedule, Rajasthan has been recreated in the studio and he is currently shooting an action sequence.” In many of his recent interviews, Saif Ali Khan explained that he was growing his beard for his role in Hunter. The actor said that he had to grow a real beard so the fake one could be attached to it. he somehow brings out the best performance in every actor, and I would love to see how he does with me.” Pooja made her acting debut in Tamil film Mugamoodi (2012) and went on to feature in Telugu movies Oka Laila Kosam, Mukunda, Duvvada Jagannadham, Rangasthalam and Saakshyam, with a couple of more in the works, including Housefull 4.

Olympic champ Usain Bolt expects nerves for Central Coast Mariners debut

Melbourne : Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt expects an onset of nerves when he makes his debut for Australia’s Central Coast Mariners against an amateur side on Friday and says he is still short of fitness and struggling with the speed of the game. Mariners coach Mike Mulvey confirmed the eight-times Olympic gold medallist would play in a preseason match that will be televised live by a local broadcaster and is tipped to draw a crowd of over 10,000 to Central Coast stadium. “There will be nerves, definitely there will be nerves, it’s not like it’s a charity game any more,” Bolt told reporters after training on Tuesday. “This is a career that I’m pursuing so there will be a bit of nerves. “I expect to make mistakes but I also expect to go in, make myself

proud and to push myself. It’s just one of those things, I know I’m not going to have a perfect game,” added the 32-year-old Jamaican. Bolt’s attempt to transform himself from global athletics superstar to professional football player has generated huge publicity for the struggling Mariners, who finished bottom of the 10-team A-league last season. It has also drawn plenty of scepticism, with Adelaide United coach Marco Kurz questioning Bolt’s open-ended trial and saying the A-League should recruit proven talents and “improve young Australian players”. Although repeatedly voicing his determination to win a Mariners contract, Bolt was measured about his progress and admitted to still struggling with his movement.

Venus Williams outlasts Svetlana Kuznetsova in brutal US Open heat

Asian Games 2018: India maul Sri Lanka 20-0 in yet another goalfest to face Malaysia in men’s hockey semis Jakarta : Defending champions India made a mockery of Sri Lankan challenge pumping in 20 goals to remain unbeaten in the pool stages, setting up a tricky semi-final clash against Malaysia in the men’s hockey competition at the Asian Games here today. It has been a scintillating performance from the Indians in the pool stages as they scored as many as 76 goals and conceded just three. It was always going to be a cakewalk for world No 5 India against Sri Lanka, ranked 38th and it turned out to be so as the title holders toyed with the rival defence to score goals at will. Akashdeep Singh

(9th, 11th, 17th, 22nd, 32nd, 42nd minutes) scored six goals while Rupinder Pal Singh (1st, 52, 53rd), playing his 200th international match, Harmanpreet Singh (5th, 21st, 33rd) and Mandeep Singh (35th, 43rd, 59th) struck thrice each as India completely dismantled the Sri Lankan defence from start to finish. Besides the duo, Lalit Upadhyay (57th, 58th), Vivek Sagar Prasad (31st), Amit Rohidas (38th) and Dilpreet Singh (53rd) scored a goal each. India, thus, toped Pool Pool A with an all-win record from five games and will take on second placed team in Pool B, Malaysia in the first semifinal on Thursday.

New York : Two-times U.S. Open champion Venus Williams outlasted Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3 5-7 6-3 in a marathon battle on a brutally hot day at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday to reach the U.S. Open second round. The 16th-seeded Williams came out strong in the first set, firing winners and attacking the net to put pressure on the Russian, who won the tournament in 2004. Williams looked like she would cruise to victory when she took a 5-2 lead in the second set but fatigue appeared to set in for the 38-year-old as temperatures soared to 93 degrees Fahrenheit (34°C) amid high humidity. Kuznetsova battled back to take the second set and requested a 10-minute heat break before the decider. But the recess appeared to boost

Williams, who returned to the court in a fresh shirt, broke serve and raced out to a 3-0 lead. Kuznetsova battled back again but Williams managed to break the Washington Open champion for an eighth time in the match to end the nearly three-hour contest. “It’s not an easy match when you are playing a former U.S. Open champion in the first round,” Williams said. “She played her best when I was up. So it wasn’t easy to close that match out.” Williams, who has been hampered all season by a knee injury that has limited her court time this year, moved well throughout the match, which marked her 20th consecutive U.S. Open appearance. “The conditions were tough and my preparations weren’t ideal,” Williams said.

Washington : North Korean officials have warned in a letter to the United States that denuclearisation talks were “again at stake and may fall apart”, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The letter was delivered directly to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s government felt that the process could not move forward. “The US is still not ready to meet (North Korean) expectations in terms of taking a step forward to sign a peace treaty,” CNN reported, citing sources. The 1950-1953 Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty, leaving US-led UN forces technically still at war with North Korea. The North has long made clear that it sees an official end to the state of war as crucial to lowering tensions on the Korean peninsula. The United States has been reluctant to declare an end to the Korean War until after North Korea abandons its nuclear weapons programme.

Russia to hold biggest war games in nearly four decades

Moscow : Russia will next month hold its biggest war games in nearly four decades, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday, a massive military exercise that will also involve the Chinese and Mongolian armies. The exercise, called Vostok-2018 (East-2018), will take place in central and eastern Russian military districts and involve almost 300,000 troops, over 1,000 military aircraft, two of Russia’s naval fleets, and all its airborne units, Shoigu said in a statement. The manoeuvres will take place at a time of heightened tension between the West and Russia, which is concerned about what it says is an unjustified build-up of the NATO military alliance on its western flank. NATO says it has beefed up its forces in eastern Europe to deter potential Russian military action after Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimea in 2014 and backed a pro-Russian uprising in eastern Ukraine. The war games, which will take place from Sept. 11-15, are likely to displease Japan which has already complained about what it says is a Russian military build-up in the Far East. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is due to attend an economic forum in Vladivostok during the same period. Shoigu said the war games would be the biggest since a Soviet military exercise, Zapad-81 (West-81) in 1981. “In some ways they will repeat aspects of Zapad-81, but in other ways the scale will be bigger,” Shoigu told reporters, while visiting the Russian region of Khakassia. The Russian Ministry of Defence has said that Chinese and Mongolian military units will also take part in the exercise.

700 cases of diarrhea, 450 cases of jaundice and typhoid, 31 cases of cholera have been reported. By August, 86,894 blood samples have been taken. If 2,838 serum samples are taken by 25 August 2017, then AMC has taken 2,549 samples of water after the waterborne epidemic. The epidemic in Ahmedabad has become uncontrollable. Mosquito-borne

pandemic increases due to the problem of mosquitoes in the monsoon season. With this, cases of water borne and other diseases of mosquito are also increased. London : Pressures mounted on Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday as lawmakers summoned him to answer questions on weak economic growth and rising prices, but the parliament was not convinced by his answers and referred the case to the judiciary. Defending his cabinet’s performance, Rouhani said the economic troubles only began when Washington reimposed sanctions on Tehran, but many lawmakers were not satisfied with the answer according to vote results at the end of the session. If the majority of lawmakers are not convinced with the president’s answers, they can see it as “a breach of law” and refer the case to the judiciary. The lawmakers have the power to impeach the president, and vote on his lack of competence, but such a motion is not before parliament at this stage. On Sunday, Iran’s parliament sacked the minister of economic affairs and finance due to the sharp fall in the rial currency and the deterioration in the economic situation. In early August Iranian lawmakers voted out the minister of labour and last month Rouhani replaced the head of the central bank. Rouhani, a pragmatist who reduced tension with the West by striking a nuclear deal with world powers in 2015, now himself faces a backlash from hardliners after U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of the pact in May. Rouhani said anti-government protests in early January encouraged Trump to withdraw from the nuclear deal as he was hopeful that economic hardship would stir more unrest in Iran.
