But the top court reserved its order on the plea. Attorney General KK Venugopal backed the plea made by Manipur commandos that some of the court’s observations (oral remarks) had created an apprehension of bias from the bench by those facing the probe. Asia Cup 2018 final: Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni star in thriller as India win trophy Sabarimala doors thrown

open to all women

New Delhi: The Supreme Court, in a historic verdict on Friday, allowed the entry of women of all ages into the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple in Kerala. Till now, women in the 10-50 age group were denied entry on the ground that they were of menstruating age. The court termed this centuries-old Hindu religious practice as illegal and unconstitutional and paved the way for women’s worship at par with men. A Constitution Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Rohinton Nariman, A.M. Khanwilkar, D.Y. Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, by a majority of 4:1, held that denial of entry to women only on the ground that they were menstruating violated Article 14 of the Constitution — the right to equality. The CJI said that in no scenario, it can be said that exclusion of women of any age group could be regarded as an essential practice of the Hindu religion. Interestingly, the only woman in the bench, Justice Indu Malhotra, was the sole dissenter to the majority verdict. In his main verdict, the CJI said there couldn’t be any discrimination in approach to divinity and spirituality. “Man can’t dominate views of worship and biological factors can’t be a legitimate ground to deny women the right to worship,” the Chief Justice said, adding that a patriarchal mindset had resulted in this prejudice against women. “Women no way are inferior to men. On one hand, women are worshipped as Goddesses, but there are restrictions on the other hand.

Karnataka minister who stoked Sabarimala row in 2006 welcomes SC verdict

Bengaluru : Karnataka’s women and child welfare minister Jayamala, who stoked a controversy in 2006 after admitting she visited the Sabarimala temple when she was 27 years-old, welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict ending a ban on the entry of women between 10 and 50 years. The former actor and Congress member of Legislative Council in 2006 claimed she touched the idol’s feet in 1986. The Kerala police subsequently filed a case against her for deliberately offending religious sentiments that was struck down by the Kerala High Court in 2012. “This is a historic verdict and has delivered justice to the women of this country. There cannot be greater happiness than this,” Jayamala said. The minister said the country was forever indebted to BR Ambedkar and the Constitution, adding that she wished to thank the judges for verdict. “I was pained by the incidents of the past, all the women of the country were pained by the ban,” she said. “The Supreme Court’s verdict has provided a balm for some of this hurt.”

PM Modi attends forces’ meet ahead of surgical strike anniversary

Jodhpur : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday attended an annual conference of top commanders from the Indian Army, Navy and the Air Force which deliberated extensively on the external security challenges facing the country, officials said. The conference was also attended by defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman and top brass of the ministry. A range of issues, including the situation along the border with China as well as geopolitical power play in the critical sea lanes surrounding India, were discussed in the conference, officials familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity. The officials said the chiefs of the army, navy and the air force presented to the prime minister an account of India’s security preparedness. The conference also carried out

a comprehensive review of the anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir. The conference took place a day ahead of the second anniversary of the surgical strike on September 29, 2016. Back in Delhi, defence minister visited the ‘ParakramParv’ exhibition at India Gate and interacted with those present to pay homage to the soldiers. She said, “We are celebrating it because we want to tell the people of India the kind of sacrifice and valour which the Indian army shows.” She added the Indian armed forces that day proved to the world that there is a very clear way to show our strength. The Congress criticised Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for “using soldiers as a tool to garner votes” while celebrating “Parakram Parv” .

Centre asks UIDAI to prepare action plan on Aadhaar after Supreme Court judgment

New Delhi : IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has asked UIDAI to prepare an action plan to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court judgement on Aadhaar which restricts use of Aadhaar data by private entities. “There was broad discussion with the minister on things that can be done to ensure compliance with the Supreme Court judgement. He has asked UIDAI to work on it,” an official source told PTI. Prasad held a meeting with IT secretary Ajay Kumar Sawhney and Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey to review status of Aadhaar use in light of the judgement. “It is a 1,400-page judgement. All the nitty-gritty

has to be taken care of. Before taking legal opinion, UIDAI has to formulate questions on what can be done,” the source said. The apex court while holding Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid struck down section 57 of the

‘Dissent is symbol of vibrant democracy’: Justice Chandrachud on activists’ arrest case

New Delhi : Dissent is a symbol of “vibrant democracy” and voices in opposition cannot be “muzzled” by persecuting those who take up unpopular causes, Justice DY Chandrachud of the Supreme Court said Friday in his dissenting judgment in the Koregaon-Bhima violence case. Justice Chandrachud, writing a separate minority verdict in which he disagreed with the views of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice AM Khanwilkar, said that individuals asserting causes which might be unpopular to the echelons of power were entitled to the freedoms guaranteed under the Constitution. He made it clear, however, that when expression of dissent enters the “prohibited

field” of incitement to violence or subversion of a democratically elected government by recourse to unlawful means, the dissent “ceases to be a mere expression of opinion”. The Supreme Court Friday refused to interfere with the arrest of five rights activists by the Maharashtra Police in connection with the KoregaonBhima violence case and declined to appoint a SIT to probe their arrest. Observing that a special investigating team (SIT) must be appointed to conduct probe in the case, Justice Chandrachud said that court acts as a “watchdog” to ensure impartial and fair investigation as it was crucial for preservation of rule of law and liberty.

Aadhaar Act, permitting private entities to avail Aadhaar data. Section 57 of the Act says: “Nothing contained in this Act shall prevent the use of Aadhaar number for establishing the identity of an individual for any purpose, whether by the State or any body corporate or person, pursuant to any law, for the time being in force, or any contract to this effect.” Following this judgement, mobile service providers and other private entities cannot ask for Aadhaar for customer registration, making it challenging for them to acquire new customers where know your customer (KYC) rules are mandatory.

BJP seeks Rahul Gandhi’s apology after Supreme Court verdict on arrested activists

New Delhi : The Supreme Court’s refusal to intervene in the arrest of five rights activists by Maharashtra police in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case or order an investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), triggered a war of words between the two leading national parties. Even as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah claimed it had exposed Congress president Rahul Gandhi and those who indulge into politics over national security, the Congress accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah of being hand-in-glove with Pakistan. Shah asked Gandhi to clarify if he was siding with “urban Naxals” . “Congress worries about the human rights of urban Naxals and illegal immigrants, but not country’s people,” the BJP president said in a statement.

A new twist in global politics

Only US President Donald Trump can stand at the biggest multilateral platform, which was built to help nations shed their nationalistic impulses, and call upon the international community to reject globalism and embrace patriotism, in his speech at the United National General Assembly (UNGA). Trump underlined his visceral dislike of multilateral institutions by arguing that “America is governed by Americans,” and that the US rejects “the ideology of globalism and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism.” By doing this, Trump once again returned to the theme of his last UNGA speech: the primacy of national sovereignty in international relations. His speech was also a response to the UN Secretary General António Guterres’ recent warning that “multilateralism is under attack from many directions,” pushing the international community to “press for a renewed commitment to a rules based order and to the United Nations.” Though Trump’s speech echoed much of what he had said last year at the UNGA, his target this time was Iran, not North Korea. Threatening to “totally destroy” North Korea last year, Trump had derided Kim Jong-un as the “Rocket Man” who was “on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime.” This year, he thanked the North Korean dictator for his “courage, and for the steps he has taken” and trained his guns at Iran, describing the Iranian regime as “brutal” and “corrupt.” Reminiscent of George W. Bush’s remarks before the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, Trump thundered, “We cannot allow the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism to possess the planet’s most dangerous weapons.” The Iranian President, Hasan Rouhani responded by mocking Trump’s North Korea outreach as “photo op diplomacy” and by asking the US to come back to the negotiating table by returning to UN Security Council resolution 2231, which codified the JCPOA. Trump has challenged the global order at multiple levels: initiating trade disputes with close allies, challenging traditional alliances in the West, withdrawing the US from global agreements such as the Paris climate accord and the JCPOA, pulling out of the global compact on migration, and threatening to try International Criminal Court prosecutors if they pursue US nationals. Washington has cut hundreds of millions of dollars in financial assistance to Palestinian refugees, hoping that the move would compel Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to participate in US-led peace talks with Israel. The US foreign policy has been overhauled but it is simplistic to boil this all down to the Trump factor alone.

Amitabh Bachchan showers Aamir Khan with praise

New Delhi : Yash Raj Films has released the trailer of this year’s most-anticipated film, Thugs Of Hindostan, on Yash Chopra’s 86th birth anniversary. On the occasion, actor Amitabh Bachchan, who plays one of the film’s leads, reminisces on his association with the late filmmaker and says that he blindly accepts whatever he is offered by the banner. “I was very close to him (Yash Chopra). Today, as a film is being launched on such a massive platform under the Yash Raj banner, I think of the days when Yash Chopra just had a small office at Raj Kamal Studio,” Mr Bachchan says, adding “Adi (Aditya Chopra) has fulfilled his father’s dream, and working with him is like spending time with family. He stood by me when I was going through a low phase, so whenever

I receive an offer from him, I blindly accept it.” Thugs Of Hindostan is an action-adventure film written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya. It is believed to be an adaptation of the 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug, and it promises a visual spectacle complete with epic sets and jaw-dropping action sequences. We also hear that Mr Bachchan has performed some intense action scenes in the film. He says, “I’m not of the age to be doing these things, but the director asked me to, so I did it.” “It would have been easier had I been wearing regular clothes, but I was made to wear leather garments and an armour — all of which weighed about 30 to 40 kilos. The most dangerous part was that all the action sequences were shot in the rain, which made the costume even heavier,” he adds.

All I wanted was for them to be even and for people to stop commenting on it.” She went under knife in 2015 and immediately regretted it. “When I woke up, I was like, ‘What have I done?’ I felt like I was living in a body I didn’t recognize,” she said, claiming her only source of support was Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

There are small films that are hits even if they just make Rs 10 crore. Certain films are made for certain audiences, and those people actually watch them and like them — you can’t call such films flops.

Business Gold extends losses on weak global cues, muted demand Gold is trading at Rs 31,300 per ten gram at bullion market extending its slide for the third straight day.

New Delhi: Gold dropped by Rs 250 to Rs 31,300 per ten gram at the bullion market on Friday, extending its slide for the third straight day largely in tandem with a weakening global trend amid tepid demand from local jewellers. Silver followed suit and dropped by Rs 450 to Rs 38,000 per kg due to poor offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said gold prices took a hit owing to a weak global trend as the dollar firmed up after upbeat US economic data supported the Federal Reserve’s resolve for steady interest rate hikes over the next year. Globally, gold fell 0.98 per cent to USD 1,182.40 an ounce and silver by 0.42 per cent to USD 14.24 an ounce in

New York on Thursday. Besides, fading demand from local jewellers and retailers at domestic spot market, too, fuelled the downtrend, they said. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity plunged by Rs 250 each to Rs 31,300 and Rs 31,150 per ten gram, respectively. It had lost Rs 175 in the previous two days. Sovereign gold, however, remained unaltered at Rs 24,500 per piece of eight gram in limited deals. In sync with gold, silver ready drifted down by Rs 450 to Rs 38,000 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 110 to Rs 37,860 per kg. Silver coins, however, maintained a steady trend at Rs 72,000 for buying and Rs 73,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Former Argentina forward Javier Saviola said Lionel Messi should not be hauled up for their World Cup exit and given ample time to decide on his international career.

Give Lionel Messi time to decide on Argentina future, says Javier Saviola

Kolkata : Former Argentina forward Javier Saviola said Lionel Messi should not be hauled up for their World Cup exit and given ample time to decide on his international career. “We all know Argentina didn’t perform as expected in the last World Cup. But I think we should just let Messi be. Just let him relax. He will need time to decide whether he wants to play with Argentina,” said Saviola on Thursday. “Hopefully, he will come back but if it is otherwise, it will be his personal choice,” said the 2004 Olympic champion, who shared a World Cup campaign with Messi in 2006. Messi had decided to retire from international duty following a defeat against Chile in the 2016 Copa America final, leaving the world shocked. After being coaxed back into the

Argentina set-up, Messi carried the national team on his shoulders to qualify for the World Cup this year. But Argentina were knocked out of the World Cup after losing 3-4 to eventual champions France in a last 16 match. Saviola, who is here as part of Barcelona Legends’ team which will play an exhibition

match against Mohun Bagan on Friday, hoped Argentina will play like a ‘real team’ the next time they take the ground. “Argentina have a lot of talented players who play for the best clubs in the world but to do well at a major competition you need to be a real team,” Saviola said.

remaining disciplined and determined, the same mentality one can use to achieve other goals. The city has shown tremendous affinity to the race, which is evident with the increasing participation numbers every year. “I’m pretty excited about this role and will be happy to share my experiences and hope I can inspire everyone starting the race that day,” added the Jamaican-born former track and field athlete, who is also a seven-time medallist at the World Championships.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard enjoying life under new manager Maurizio Sarri

Eden Hazard’s existing contract would keep him at Stamford Bridge for another two years but his scintillating start to the season has done nothing to stop the persistent rumours linking him to Real Madrid. New Delhi : Eden Hazard is enjoying life under new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri but says reports that he is about to announce the signing of a new deal with the London club are wide of the mark. Hazard’s existing contract would keep him at Stamford Bridge for another two years but his scintillating start to the season has done nothing to stop the persistent rumours linking him to Real Madrid. “I haven’t signed a contract,” the Belgian said after scoring the winning goal in his team’s 2-1 League Cup victory over Liverpool in midweek with a stunning individual effort. “Not yet, not yet.” The second round of a double-header against the

league-leading Merseyside club provides Chelsea’s next fixture on Saturday, when Hazard could add to the five goals he has scored in six Premier League appearances so far this campaign. Sarri replaced his compatriot Antonio Conte before the start of the season and Hazard said his attempts to change Chelsea’s counter-attacking style to a more possession-based model had been beneficial to his game. “Sarri is a manager who likes to have the ball. That makes a big difference,” Hazard added. “Besides that, he’s an Italian. Just like under Conte there’s a lot of tactics and we have to work hard in training.

The ACA, which has 3150 members, had submitted a memorandum to the Ahmedabad Collector in August and listed their pending demand of GST refund on expired medicines and unregulated online pharmacies, which posed a threat to local pharmacies or shops. Chairman of the Federation of Gujarat State Chemists & Druggists Association Jashvant P Patel told Mirror, “We had earlier

Boris Johnson demands PM Theresa May scrap her Brexit proposals

London : Brexit campaigner Boris Johnson called on Prime Minister Theresa May to rip up her proposal for Britain’s exit from the European Union, ratcheting up the pressure on May as she prepares to face her divided party at its annual conference next week. Just six months before the United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019, little is clear: PM May has yet to clinch a Brexit divorce deal with the EU and rebels in her party have threatened to vote down any deal she makes. “This is the moment to change the course of the negotiations and do justice to the ambitions and potential of Brexit,” Johnson, who resigned in July as foreign secretary over May’s Brexit proposals, wrote in Friday’s Daily Telegraph. Johnson, the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed May, said May’s plans would leave the United Kingdom half in and half out of the club it joined in 1973 and ineffective “enforced vassalage”.

Washington : Glued to high-stakes testimony on his Supreme Court nominee, President Donald Trump and his allies were shaken by Christine Blasey Ford’s emotional appearance on Capitol Hill Thursday, but heartened by Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s forceful pushback against the woman who accused him of sexual misconduct. Trump missed hardly a moment of the proceedings, relying on DVRs to keep up on the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday from his private office on Air Force One as he traveled from New York to Washington, and continued monitoring back at the White House, where Ford’s voice echoed from TVs around the building. Within moments of the eight-hour proceedings concluding, Trump tweeted his approval of Kavanaugh’s performance and called on the Senate to move swiftly to a vote. “His testimony was powerful, honest, and riveting,” Trump said.

Republican Sen. Graham tells Kavanaugh ‘you’ve got nothing to apologize for’

Washington : Brett Kavanaugh looked in desperate need of a fighter on his behalf Thursday as he gave impassioned testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee denying allegations of sexual assault. He found it in Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who told the judge straight out, “You’ve got nothing to apologize for.” Kavanaugh alternated from anger to tears during fiery testimony. He took deep breaths and lengthy sips of water to gain his composure. He looked every bit the man who said his family “has been destroyed by this senator, destroyed.” Democratic senators pressed Kavanaugh over and over again to request an FBI investigation if he had nothing to hide. Enter Graham, who said that if Democrats truly wanted an FBI investigation, they could have spoken up when Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was first made aware of the allegations from Christine Blasey Ford. Just hours earlier, Ford described for senators what she says was an assault by Kavanaugh on a summer evening three decades ago. Kavanaugh denied the allegation. “What you want to do is destroy this guy’s life, hold this seat open and hope you win in 2020,” Graham said with his voice shaking, pointing at Democratic lawmakers. Graham said he voted for Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, both nominated by a Democratic president, and he told Kavanaugh to say hello to them when he sees them. “I’d never do to them what you’ve done to this guy.
