Short News CBI vs CBI: SC to hear Alok Verma’s plea on Thursday

New Delhi : The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear Thursday CBI director Alok Verma’s plea challenging the government’s order divesting him of his duties and sending him on leave in view of graft allegations against him. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi is likely to consider the response of Verma given in a sealed cover on the findings of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) in the preliminary inquiry against him. The bench is also likely to consider the report of acting CBI Director M Nageswara Rao also filed in a sealed cover in the court with regard to the decisions taken by him from October 23-26. Besides the plea filed by Verma, the court is also likely to hear the PIL filed by NGO Common Cause, which has sought a probe by a special investigation team against CBI officers.

Yogi Adityanath Claims Hanuman Was a Dalit Tribal, Only a ‘Ravana Bhakt’ Would Vote for Congress

Jaipur: Bharatiya Janata Party’s saffron mascot Yogi Adityanath dragged the “caste” of Lord Hanuman into the poll slugfest in Rajasthan to seek Dalit votes on Wednesday. The UP chief minister, known for his polarising speeches, said that Hanuman was a Dalit tribal as he appealed to those belonging to his caste to vote for the candidate fielded by the BJP from Alwar. “Hanuman was a tribal, a forest dweller and was deprived. Bajrang Bali worked to connect all Indian communities together, from north to south and east to west. This was his resolve as it was Lord Ram’s wish. Just like him, we should also not rest till we fulfil that wish,” Adityanath said during a poll rally in Malpura constituency. The firebrand leader, one of the BJP’s star campaigners in the state, then directed his divisive diatribe at the Congress and said while all ‘Ram-bhakts’ would vote for the saffron party, only those who pray to Ravana would vote for the Congress.

India has been seeking to open the Kartarpur corridor linking Gurdwara Darbar Sahib — the final resting place of Guru Nanak Dev — to Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur for several years.

India will not participate in SAARC unless Pakistan ends terror, says Sushma New Delhi : Ahead of the stone laying ceremony of Kartarpur corridor by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday threatened to pull out of the SAARC Summit, saying there would be no dialogue with Pakistan until it stops sponsoring terrorist activities. “Unless and until Pakistan stops terrorist activities in India there will be no dialogue and we will not participate in SAARC,” Swaraj said at a press conference in Hyderabad. On Tuesday, Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesman Mohammad Faisal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be invited to the summit. In 2016, India had

pulled out of the 19th SAARC summit that was to be held in Islamabad after the deadly terrorist attack on an Indian Army camp in J&K’s Uri. The summit had to be called off after Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan also declined to attend. Maldives and Sri Lanka are the other two members of the regional grouping. No SAARC meeting has happened ever since.Swaraj’s statement today came hours before the foundation stone laying ceremony for the much-awaited corridor linking Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur — the final resting place of Sikh faith’s founder Guru Nanak Dev — to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district.

Oppn UDF slams Kerala govt TRS ‘B team’ of over Sabarimala restrictions, RSS and BJP, says Rahul in CM Vijayan justifies

Thiruvananthapuram : The Congress-led UDF Opposition Wednesday lambasted the ruling CPI(M) over restrictions imposed by police at Sabarimala, even as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said it was to ensure a smooth pilgrimage for “real” devotees. Armed with placards and banners, the Opposition members tried to interrupt the proceedings of the House as soon as it met and demanded the withdrawal of the prohibitory orders invoked in and around

Sabarimala ‘Sannidhanam’, the temple complex. Some members even tried to climb Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan’s podium and argued with him, demanding scrapping of the Question Hour to take up the adjournment motion over Sabarimala, considering the gravity of the subject. As the protest continued, the speaker stopped the proceedings for around an hour before the beginning of the ‘Zero’ hour (members can, with prior notice to the Speaker, raise issues of importance during this time).

Congress, TRS engaging in minority appeasement: Shah

Adilabad : BJP president Amit Shah attacked Telangana’s TRS government and the Congress on Monday over “minority appeasement”, claiming the Congress party’s poll manifesto for the state assembly polls largely focused on the welfare of Muslims. Addressing an election rally here, Shah said the TRS dispensation’s decision to raise Muslim quotas in government jobs and staterun educational institutions to 12 per cent resulted in blocking of a proposal for hiking reservations for tribals. He said the K Chandrasekhar Rao government also talked about separate IT corridors for religious minorities. Quoting a national TV news channel, the BJP president said it leaked the Congress manifesto that envisaged quotas for minorities in government contracts.“And if you are not from minority community, you will not get contracts. Rs 20 lakh will be given for education of the students of minority communities.

75% turnout in Mizoram

Polling was marred by complaints of faulty EVMs and VVVPAT machines. Chief Electoral Officer V L Kantha Rao said 1,145 EVMs and 1,545 VVPATs were replaced after complaints of technical snags. Bhopal : Altogether 74.61 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections Wednesday, a rise of around two per cent compared to the previous polls. The figure may go up, state Chief Electoral Officer V L Kantha Rao said. In the 2013 Assembly polls, it was 72.69 per cent, he added. Polling was marred by complaints of faulty Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVVPAT) machines. Rao said 1,145 EVMs and 1,545 VVPATs were replaced after complaints of technical snags. Polling was held between 8 am and 5 pm in 227 seats, while in three assembly segments – Lanji, Paraswada and Baihar – in the Naxalaffected Balaghat district, the voting time was between 7 am to 3 pm.

Mizoram went to polls on Wednesday with 209 candidates in the fray for the 40-member legislative assembly. Voting began at 7 am and ended at 4 pm. The state recorded 80% voter turnout in a peaceful poll. Congress, which has been in power in Mizoram since 2008, is eyeing a third consecutive term in the state. While the direct contest is between the Congress and Mizo National Front, BJP, National People’s Party and Zoram People’s Movement could play crucial roles in the formation of the next government. Chief minister Lal Thanhawla is contesting from two seats — Serchhip and Champhai South. “Serchhip with 81% recorded the highest turnout among all eight districts, while Aizawl with 65% was the lowest,” said chief electoral officer Ashish Kundra.

India slams Imran Khan for ‘politicising’ Kartarpur event by raking up Kashmir

India on Wednesday expressed its displeasure over Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan raising the issue of Kashmir in his speech during the ground-breaking ceremony for the development of the Kartarpur Corridor. Hitting out at Khan for politicising the “pious occasion”, the Ministry of External Affairs said Kashmir was an integral and inalienable part of India. “Deeply regrettable that Pakistan PM chose to politicise the pious occasion meant to realise the long pending demand of Sikh community to develop Kartarpur Corridor by making unwarranted reference to J&K, which is integral and inalienable part of India,” ANI quoted the MEA as saying.

“Kaamdar Against Naamdar”: PM Modi’s Jibe At Rahul In Rajasthan

The Congress has cobbled together a coalition of TDP, CPI and the newly formed TJS to take on the TRS and the BJP in the state. Kosgi: Mounting a scathing attack on Telangana’s ruling TRS, Congress president Rahul Gandhi called it the “B team” of the RSS and BJP. “TRS is not Telangana Rashtra Samiti, it’s Telangana Rashtriya Sangh Parivar. It’s a B team of the RSS and BJP,” he told an election rally here. The Congress has cobbled together a coalition of opposition parties that includes N Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP, CPI and the newly formed TJS to take on the TRS and the BJP in the state. The TRS and BJP are contesting the assembly polls separately. He also assailed the TRS of caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao for his party’s understanding with AIMIM of Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, and said the two parties wanted to ensure that the BJP was not defeated in next year’s Lok Sabha polls.

PM Modi in Rajasthan: Amid the election in Rajasthan, PM Narendra Modi said he was was like the people and was not born with a silver spoon. NAGAUR: The kaamdar is in a fight against the naamdar in Rajasthan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday, making a distinction between the one who works and the dynast, in a jibe at Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Driving home the difference between himself and Rahul Gandhi, who he has often referred to as naamdar (dynast), he said he was like the people and was not born with a silver spoon. “We are not seeking votes for our grandsons or granddaughters but for your

welfare and to help fulfil your dreams,” PM Modi said at a rally in Nagaur, Rajasthan, ahead of elections on December 7. Hitting out at the Congress, he said those whose four generations have had no connect with the public cannot understand the pain of the common people. “Our only mantra is ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas’, inspired by social reformers Jyotiba Phule and BR Ambedkar,” the Prime Minister said. PM Modi asked people choose the Vasundhara Raje government for another term in the state.

As per police records, Naveed Jatt had earlier trained with Ajmal Kasab in Pakistan. “We’ll be writ ing to the home ministry to inform Pakistan to take back the body,” police said.

Lashkar terrorist, allegedly involved in Bukhari murder, killed in Kashmir encounter

New Delhi : Lashkar-e-Taiba commander and Pakistani terrorist Naveed Jatt, wanted in the murder of Kashmiri editor Shujaat Bukhari, was killed in an encounter in Kashmir’s Budgam district on Wednesday. Another militant was also killed and three army personnel injured in the gunfight. Confirming Jatt’s death, Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Dilbagh Singh said, “We’ll be writing to the home ministry to inform Pakistan to take back the body. It was a swift operation carried out by security forces. We finally got the prize catch Naveed

Jatt. He has managed to give us the slip in six different encounters but today our boys managed to pin him down.” Jatt was once arrested in June 2014 but escaped earlier this year from SMHS Hospital in Srinagar where jail authorities had taken

him for a medical checkup. He is alleged to be involved in a series of terror crimes, including the murder of an ASI in Pulwama in 2013, several grenade attacks on security forces and killing of CRPF personnel in Shopian in 2013. He was also involved in conspiring and executing several bank robberies in South Kashmir. As per police records, Jatt had earlier trained with Ajmal Kasab in Pakistan. Earlier in the day, the encounter broke out after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Chattergam village of Budgam.

Genetic modification goes beyond ethics

Someone somewhere was bound to do it. Ever since researchers at the University of Alicante in Spain came up with the revolutionary new gene-editing tool CRISPR, the chance to play god and the temptation to do it have been beckoning scientists. So when Shenzhen-based Chinese researcher He Jiankui claimed, ahead of an international conference on gene editing in Hong Kong, that he had created the world’s first genetically edited babies by altering their DNA using CRISPR, it should have come as no surprise. His claim is still unverified and, in fact, Southern University of Science and Technology, which hosts his lab, later said his work “seriously violated academic ethics and standards. At the heart of He’s work is CRISPR (short for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats), the gene editing tool that allowed geneticists and researchers to edit parts of the genome by removing, adding or altering sections of the DNA sequence, much more efficiently than earlier techniques did. He claimed the genes of the twins had been edited to resist the HIV virus, which is what makes the framing of the argument against genetic editing much more complex. The announcement caused predictable consternation with many wondering if these experiments have gone too far and arguing that tinkering with the variability of a gene pool can have disastrous consequences given that genes are connected and for one single character many of them have to work in unison. There is also the issue of human germline editing. The germline is the sequence of cells that develop into eggs and sperm, and any changes made in it are likely to be passed down to future generations. But the issue goes beyond bio-ethics. A patient suffering a condition like Huntington disease would want to see gene editing used to prevent such genetic diseases, since they don’t have any cure. However, as has been argued elsewhere, its use in trying to prevent a deaf person being born is clearly abhorrent, especially since once it becomes prevalent, anyone born with a genetic condition like that runs the risk of being shunned by society. Scientific experiments have gone awry often enough in the past. The atom bomb is a great example of scientific endeavour gone wrong. What started with the simple statement that a small amount of matter could release a lot of energy built upon Niels Bohr’s atomic model morphed into the most destructive discovery mankind has ever seen.

I was never delusional about myself: Anil Kapoor

Mumbai: Anil Kapoor on Tuesday said he always strived for “longevity as an actor in films and never wanted to become an instant star. I worked with good directors. I listened more than I would talk. “I worked towards my physicality because I need that strength and stamina to portray all the characters. In trying to maintain the energy to be in front of the camera, I started looking after myself, Anil said. Petrol price dips below Rs 74 mark, diesel wipes off all hike

New Delhi: Petrol price Wednesday fell below Rs 74 per litre mark for the first time since April as the six-week long price reduction spree wiped off all of the massive price hikes witnessed in petrol and diesel rates earlier this year. Petrol price in Delhi was cut by 50 paisa to Rs 73.57 per litre, according to a price notification issued by state-owned fuel retailers. This is the lowest petrol price since April. Diesel rates were cut by 40 paisa to Rs 68.89 a litre, the notification said. With this, the reduction in rates in last six weeks totals Rs 9.26 per litre on petrol and Rs 7.2 per litre on diesel. Rates have been on the decline since October 18. This has wiped off all of the price hike on petrol and diesel in two months beginning August 16. Petrol price had touched a record high of Rs 84 per litre in Delhi and Rs 91.34 in Mumbai on October 4. Diesel on that day had peaked to an all-time high of Rs 75.45 a litre in Delhi

Between August 16 and October 4, petrol price was hiked by Rs 6.86 per litre and diesel by Rs 6.73. On October 4, the government decided to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 1.50 per litre each and asked state-owned fuel retailers to subsidise prices by another Re 1 a litre by reducing their margins. Many states including Maharashtra matched that with a reduction in local sales tax or VAT. Subsequent to this, the petrol price came down to Rs 81.50 per litre in Delhi and diesel to Rs 72.95 a litre on October 5.

Employee unions claimed that the govt has not allotted spectrum for 4G services to BSNL in order to prevent it from competing against RJio.

BSNL employee unions allege govt patronising Jio; plan indefinite strike from Dec 3

New Delhi: Blaming Reliance Jio for financial woes of the telecom sector, employee unions of BSNL on Wednesday alleged that the government was favouring the latest entrant over other firms and said they will go on an indefinite strike from December 3. The employee unions claimed that the government has not allotted spectrum for 4G services to BSNL in order to prevent it from competing against Reliance Jio. Reliance Jio did not comment on the allegations. “As of now, the whole telecom industry is gripped with a crisis...All these have happened due to the predatory pricing of the Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio. The whole

game plane of Reliance Jio is to wipe out its competitors, which includes the state owned BSNL,” BSNL unions said in a joint statement. All Unions and Associations of BSNL (AUAB) alleged that with its huge financial

muscle, Reliance Jio is offering services at ‘belowcost’ rates. It said that private telecom companies like Aircel, Tata Teleservices, Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Communications and Telenor have already

closed their mobile service businesses. It alleged that Reliance Jio will steeply raise call and data tariffs once the entire competition is wiped out. “It will loot the people by steeply raising the call and data charges. It is a matter of deep concern that, Reliance Jio is being openly patronised by the Narendra Modi government,” the statement said. No immediate comments were received from the Prime Minister’s Office. AUAB said the public sector firm has been demanding allotment of 4G spectrum but “the government has turned a deaf ear to this demand, with the ulterior motive of preventing the public sector company from putting up an effective competition to Reliance Jio”.

Sensex surges over 200 points, Nifty reclaims 10,700 mark ahead of F&O expiry

Mumbai: The BSE Sensex rose for the third straight session on Wednesday, gaining over 200 points on shortcovering ahead of November derivatives expiry and positive global cues amid rising hopes of a trade deal between the US and China. In similar movement, the broader NSE Nifty reclaimed the 10,700 level. The 30-share Sensex settled 203.81 points, or 0.57 per cent, higher at 35,716.95, while the broader NSE Nifty jumped 43.25 points, or 0.40 per

cent, to finish at 10,728.85. According to analysts, positive global market and short-covering ahead of November future and options (F&O) expiry led the indices to extend their rally. “Market has largely factored the earnings downgrade post Q2 results and valuation has got more rational due to tailwinds in domestic macros,” they added. The rally was led by IT stocks, with TCS and Infosys rising up to 5 per cent. IndusInd Bank, RIL, PowerGrid, HDFC Bank, HDFC, ICICI

Bank, Hero MotoCorp and Tata Steel were among the other gainers, advancing up to 2 per cent. The PIL said that there is no historical evidence warranting to change the city’s name to Karnavati

Gujarat: HC asks petitioner if government passed proposal on renaming Ahmedabad Ahmedabad : In response to a petition opposing changing the name of Ahmedabad to Karnavati as suggested by BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Vijay Rupani recently, the Gujarat High Court on Wednesday asked the petitioner to produce a proposal, if any, passed by the state government regarding the same. The PIL, filed by lawyer Hetvi Sancheti based on recent statements of the Chief Minister and his colleagues claiming that a name change is being considered, said that “the government of Gujarat through its head, Chief Minister, announced on a public forum that name change of the city of Ahmedabad to Karnavati”. The PIL said that there is no historical

evidence warranting to change the city’s name to Karnavati. However, the petition added, there is enough material and data suggesting “the name Ahmedabad holds significance as cultural heritage of the people of Amdavad”. According to the PIL, “The name of city Ahmedabad is an Intangible Cultural Heritage. Even in the

hypothetical scenario, if the issue of name change of Ahmedabad to Karnavati is put on a backburner, the present controversy needs to be put to rest permanently by declaring “Name of Ahmedabad” as “Intangible Cultural Heritage”, particularly when the state itself is a threat to such heritage and even in the past has stirred up such controversies.”

After joining the party, Mer, a Koli-Patel OBC leader, said that he quit the BJP as the ruling party was continuously neglecting interests of farmers and rural population.

Gujarat: Ahead of Jasdan bypoll, Congress gets another BJP Koli leader

Ahmedabad : Former BJP MLA Lalji Mer formally joined the Congress here on Wednesday in presence of state Congress president Amit Chavda and AICC general secretary in-charge of Gujarat Rajiv Satav. After joining the party, Mer, a Koli-Patel OBC leader, said that he quit the BJP as the ruling party was continuously neglecting interests of farmers and rural population. “Farmers, landless farm labourers and poor people are not getting justice. They are being subjected to injustice. I am a son of a farmer and hence, I resigned from the BJP to fight for the cause of farming community,” Mer told mediapersons after joining

the Congress. While former BJP minister Sundersinh Chauhan and former BJP MLA Lalji Mer switching to the Congress might boost the party’s confidence, its real challenge will be to retain the Jasdan seat in the December 20 Assembly byelection. The Koli-dominated Jasdan

seat, a Congress bastion, fell vacant after its MLA Kunvarji Bavalia defected to the BJP, and was immediately made a cabinet minister in the Rupani government. The Congress which desperately wants its number in the Assembly to return to 77, has, however, been unable

to announce a candidate for fear of triggering factional struggles. Mer, who won from Dhandhuka Assembly seat on a BJP ticket in 2012, accused the BJP of “doing injustice to thousands of farmers whose lands are being acquired for the development of Dholera Special Investment Region”.

Trump signals new willingness to reach a trade agreement with China

Mexico to bestow top honour on Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner

Washington : Mexico’s outgoing government said on Tuesday it would bestow the country’s top honor for foreigners on Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, a decision quickly met with derision by critics on social media.Kushner, who also serves as a senior White House adviser, will be admitted to the Order of the Aztec Eagle because of “his significant contributions” to a new North American trade pact agreed to in August, the government said in a statement. Kushner has often played a key diplomatic role in Trump’s administration, meeting with Mexican and other foreign leaders and helping broker the deal to update the 24-year-

old North American Free Trade Agreement. Canada joined the pact in late September. The award is expected to be formally presented to Kushner on Thursday by outgoing President Enrique Pena Nieto on the sidelines of the G-20 summit of world leaders in Buenos Aires, Mexican newspaper Reforma reported on Tuesday, citing unidentified government sources. The summit is also where the leaders of Mexico, the United States and Canada are expected to sign the revamped regional trade deal. The honor bestowed on Kushner was a trending topic on Twitter, where it appeared to be mostly criticized by prominent Mexicans.

Washington : President Donald Trump is projecting a steely facade as he prepares for a critical meeting on trade this weekend with President Xi Jinping of China. But behind his tough talk and threats of higher tariffs is a creeping anxiety about the costs of a prolonged trade war on the financial markets and the broader economy. That could set the stage for a truce between the United States and China, several U.S. officials said, in the form of an agreement that would delay new tariffs for several months while the world’s two largest economies try to work out the issues dividing them.Such an outcome is not certain. Administration officials have expressed deep disappointment with China’s response to Trump’s pressure so far, characterizing it as a list of proposals, transmitted in Chinese, which they say would do little to curb China’s theft of U.S. technology or address its other predatory trade practices. But Trump has signalled a new willingness to make a deal with Xi, a leader he has treated solicitously and will meet over dinner on Saturday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after a summit meeting of leaders of the Group of 20 industrialized nations. The gyrations in the stock market, the rise in interest rates and thousands of layoffs announced by General Motors this week have all rattled Trump, officials said, fueling his desire to emerge from his meal with Xi with something he can claim as a victory. “There’s a good possibility that we can make a deal, and he is open to it,” Trump’s chief economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, said Tuesday.

Explosion Near Chemical Plant in China Kills at Least 23

BEIJING — An explosion in a factory zone in northern China late Tuesday killed at least 23 people and left 22 others injured, officials said, adding to the string of deadly accidents in the country’s vast industrial sector. The explosion erupted near the Hebei Shenghua Chemical Industry Company plant in Hebei Province and tore through roughly 50 vehicles, including 38 trucks that had lined up to deliver chemicals and other goods to factories in the zone, Chinese news reports said, citing investigators. But later on Wednesday there was still no firm answer on what caused the explosion, and whether there

was any link to the big Shenghua plant or maybe a smaller factory nearby. The fiery explosion could be heard from over a mile away, news reports said, citing residents, and video and pictures from the scene showed that the blast sent a dark plume of smoke into the night sky. Daylight arrived to reveal charred, smoldering trucks, some with their tires burned away, that lay along the road. After decades of encouraging feverish industrial growth, the Chinese government has been trying to curb the large numbers of accidents in factories, mines and plants. Official statistics indicate that industrial accidents and deaths have fallen.
