Short News After UIDAI assures ‘digital trust’, hackers deposit Re 1 in Trai boss’ account via PayTM

New Delhi : Hackers on Sunday claimed to have personal information of Trai chief RS Sharma, after he dared on Twitter to show that how mere knowledge of the number could be misused, sharing his 12-digit Aadhaar number. Sharma had tweeted: “Now I give this challenge to you: Show me one concrete example where you can do any harm to me!”. The challenge by Sharma had got 577 retweets, and 745 likes by late evening. Hours later, to his surprise, his personal details like PAN number and alternative phone number were put out on public domain by hackers putting a question mark on Aadhaar data security. However, UIDAI on Sunday asserted that the personal details of Trai chief R S Sharma being put out on Twitter are not from the Aadhaar database or its servers, and that “so called hacked information” is easily available with a simple search on Google and other sites, without using the 12-digit unique identity number. The UIDAI jumped into the debate following a full blown war of words on Twitter between Trai Chairman RS Sharma and some users over the potential of Aadhaar number being misused.

Can’t escape books, but be calm and enjoy life: Modi to students

New Delhi: There is no alternative to books and studies, but students should be calm, enjoy life and seek inner happiness, this was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to students who entered colleges and institutions of higher studies. “All I would like to say to you is ‘Be calm, enjoy life, seek inner happiness in life. There is no alternative to books, one has to study, yet one’s bent of mind should be towards discovering new things,” he said in his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio address. Modi said while February and

March get consumed in exams, papers and answers, April and May are meant for enjoying vacations, followed by results and career choices.”Keep learning something new, such as newer skills and languages. Young people who leave their homes for the sake of studies should discover their new

places, know more about the people, language, culture and tourism...,” he said. PM also used the occasion to refer to the humble background of some of the students who excelled in studies. He said one of the students, in his maiden attempt, cracked the entrance exam for MBBS at AIIMS, Jodhpur. His father earns his daily bread by wastepicking. “There are many such instances of students from deprived families who, through sheer determination and perseverance, overcame all odds and stood out to be beacons of inspiration to

'My conscience is clear, not scared to be seen with industrialists'

New Delhi : In a scathing attack on the Opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that unlike others, he is not at all afraid of being seen with industrialists. Speaking at a launch of 81 projects worth Rs 60,000 crore at a ceremony here, the Prime Minister further reiterated that as long as intentions are clear, there is no issue in meeting with the industrialists, who play a significant role in the country’s development. Citing the example of Mahatma Gandhi, who reportedly used to stay at the Birla House, the Prime Minister said, “My conscience is clear.” “There

are people who don’t want to get themselves photographed with any industrialist but there is hardly any who didn’t meet them on the sly. Mahatma Gandhi never hesitated in meeting businessman Birla. There is no problem in meeting anyone as long as the intentions are clear,” Prime Minister Modi said. “I am not the kind who is scared of being seen with industrialists. There are those who don’t want to meet them in public, but only behind curtains... there is not one industrialist who has not done a ‘shashwat pranaam’ (deferential respects) at their homes... Doesn’t everyone

know whose aircraft these people travel in?” he added. Pointing out that industrialists “play an important part in developing the country”, the Prime Minister added, “Why should we shame them, call them thieves?” The hit back from Prime Minister Modi comes after the Opposition’s allegations about his closeness with corrupt and absconding industrialist Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi. The Congress has time and again attacked Prime Minister Modi over his alleged links with industrialists while also accusing him of ignoring the farmers and the underprivileged of the nation.

others,” he said giving out examples. He also referred to abundant rainfall in some areas and a lack of it in other regions and said rains play hide and seek through partiality laced likes and dislikes. PM also congratulated athlete Hima Das who made history by winning gold medal in 400-metre race. He also appreciated Ekta Bhyan,

Yogesh Qathuniaji and Sundar Singh Gurjar who won medals at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2018 held in Tunisia. Also refers to the contribution of Tilak, Sardar Patel and Chandra Shekar Azad in freedom struggle New Delhi: There is no alternative to books and studies, but students should be calm, enjoy life and seek inner happiness, this was Prime

Bhopal/Dehradun: In a shocking incident, an 11-year-old girl from Satna was raped and murdered by a 32-yearold man in Dehradun (Uttarakhand). The deceased, along with her parents, had gone to Dehradun from Satna (MP), while the accused identified as Jay Prakash Tiwari, had come from Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh. The deceased’s parents and the accused used to work as labourers in an under-construction building in the area. The accused was trying to flee, when police arrested him. He told the police that he ‘wanted to have sex but failed to get an

escort’ after which he targeted the minor girl and later murdered her to avoid getting caught. According to the police, the girl was playing with two boys, when Tiwari lured them to his shanty. He gave the boys Rs 10 each to buy candies and asked the girl to stay for more money only to rape her later. ‘Low morality behind offence against children’ Agartala:

Supreme Court Judge and former Tripura HC Chief Justice Deepak Gupta said falling morality in society, degenerating family values and pornography were behind the series of sexual assaults on children. Gupta told reporters here that cases of sexual abuse of children were registered more now compared to previous years.

At Barapullah launch, Arvind Kejriwal takes aim at other state govts

New Delhi : While inaugurating the Barapullah Phase II elevated corridor on Saturday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal hit out at other state governments that have been in power for multiple terms and said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had done more work than them in the

last three years. Initially supposed to be opened in 2015, the Barapullah Phase II elevated corridor has missed four deadlines. The 2-km-long elevated road connects the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium to INA. “In the past three years, Delhi government has done so much work. It makes me think about other parties in

other states. For 15 years in Madhya Pradesh and 25-30 years in Gujarat,

Lady cop harassed by man accused of raping her

Bhopal: A 33-year-old woman SI was allegedly harassed by a person over the phone at the police headquarters on Saturday, the police said on Sunday. Fed up with the continuous harassment the woman filed a complaint against the accused and stated that he has been calling her and sending obscene messages to her since June 2018. Acting on the complaint, police booked the accused under sections 195 A (Threatening any person to give false evidence), 354 D (follows a woman and contacts, or attempts to contact such woman to foster personal interaction repeatedly despite a clear indication of disinterest by such woman) and 506 (criminal intimidation)

of IPC. The accused has been identified as Kashiram Panchole, who worked as stenographer in the same department as the victim. The complainant woman, a resident of Devlok Colony in Bairagarh, posted as a clerk in the PHQ office in Jahangirabad, said the accused had raped her in 2015. A case is already in court against the accused. She alleged that the accused was trying to threaten her to seek favour in the court. Accused used to work at PHQ, too, and had allegedly raped her in 2015 Was raped on the promise of marriage In 2015, the accused exploited the victim on the promise of marriage. the BJP has been in power. The Congress was in power in Delhi for 15 years. But who has worked more? Us in three years,” he said. He listed the government’s achievements, ranging from “revolutionary change” in schools to achievements in health, and added: “No one works for the poor. They will take votes from

the poor and remember them once every five years. Once they win, they work for the rich. On education, which AAP hopes to make its main plank in the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kejriwal said, “Earlier there used to be a line outside my house with people hoping to get their children admitted to

private schools. Now they want to get their children transferred to government schools and that is what they queue up for instead.” While maintaining that there was still much work left, he said, “The Barapullah flyover, of which a little part is left, has connected south Delhi all the way to Noida.

Amit Shah meets RSS chief, discusses organisation issues Mumbai : The BJP national president Amit Shah, who arrived in Mumbai on Saturday a day-long visit, held a closed-door meeting with RSS president Mohan Bhagwat. Later in the day, Shah met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. “The RSS and BJP top leadership meeting and deliberating on social and organisation issues is part of an ongoing exercise,” said a source in the BJP. During his visit, Shah attended the special

screening of a film on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s early life. The film, Chalo Jeete Hain, was screened at a south Mumbai multiplex. The 32-minute film, directed by Mangesh Hadawale and presented

by Aanand L Rai and Mahaveer Jain, will have its world premiere on Star Network and its OTT platform Hotstar on July 29. Produced by Bhushan Kumar of T-Series, the film is based on the early life

of Modi and shows how he is inspired by Swami Vivekanand and the empathy he exhibits towards the poor while growing up in Vadnagar in Gujarat. Shah’s visit assumes significance against the backdrop of Fadnavis calling an all-party meeting in connection to the Maratha quota agitation. However, a BJP leader said, “Shah’s visit to Mumbai has nothing to do with Maratha reservation. It was scheduled in advance.”

Curbs on international media are not wise

Bad or outdated rules and laws should be allowed to fall into disuse or, better still, repealed. That would be the sensible thing to do. Alas, we have an example of a bad rule, which has been ignored for years, but is now to be strictly enforced. It’s a terrible mistake and one that is likely to prove both expensive and self-defeating. I refer to the 1958 guidelines regarding the travel of foreigners. This set of rules require journalists to seek “prior permission” before travelling to “parts” of Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and the whole of Sikkim and Nagaland. For years, if not decades, this requirement was ignored and it was believed the guidelines had lapsed. The result was foreign correspondents based in Delhi could travel easily and quickly to all parts of India. This not only improved their coverage of the country but also their understanding as well as their sense of being welcomed and valued. Now, at one stroke, that could be reversed. Let’s take Srinagar as an example. Until now foreign correspondents could visit this state capital virtually whenever they wanted. This underlined India’s insistence that Kashmir is a fully integrated part of the country. It gave meaning to the phrase ‘atoot ang’. Now each time a correspondent wishes to visit, he or she will have to seek permission from the government. Weeks could pass – and often will – before it’s granted. Indeed, occasionally or even often, it may not be. So what message does this requirement send about India? I wonder if anyone has seriously thought about it. If I can jump the gun I’d add I doubt it. To begin with, it casts a shadow over India’s vaunted claim to be the largest democracy in the world. Democracies, after all, guarantee press freedoms. India is now putting restrictions on the foreign media. If this raises disturbing doubts in their minds we have only ourselves – or our government – to blame. However, the outcome could be worse. The revival of long-standing restrictions also suggests there are sizeable parts of India where disaffection exists which the government does not want the outside world to see. These are areas that will now be deemed to be ‘denied’ to the foreign media. If, therefore, it concludes we have something to hide can you blame it? There’s also one other reason why this revival of old guidelines is silly. It will not just upset but put the backs up of foreign correspondents who will, understandably, feel this is directly targeted at them. Which, of course, it is. And this doesn’t make sense. When you accept foreign correspondents it’s because you want them to convey an accurate appreciation of the country but also, more importantly, a favourable one. After all, they are the eyes and ears of the outside world.

Mulk actor Taapsee Pannu

Diana Penty: Happy Bhag Jayegi gave me a chance to break the mould

Cinema is the best medium for me to state my views

Mumbai : From the shy and simple Meera of Cocktail to the vivacious and free-spirited Happy of Happy Bhag Jayegi, Diana Penty, who will next be seen in its sequel Happy Phir Bhag Jayegi, is glad her sophomore film itself gave her a chance to break the mould and find her feet in Bollywood, where she is now in a “happy” space. Looking back at her career, the modelturned-actress in an interview “Cocktail was the perfect debut but I knew that with it came a certain standard that I had to try and live up to moving forward. So I guess there was a certain pressure to choose the right script and do the right kind of film. At that time, I was very new to the industry.” “I didn’t know too many people and didn’t have anyone to really guide me. It took me a while to figure out how to proceed, what direction to take – whether I should be doing a small part in a big film or an interesting role in a smaller film. Whether to follow my intuition or blindly follow what people were telling me to do, whether to stick to stories I genuinely believed in, or do everything that came my way.

Mumbai : Actor Taapsee Pannu says she prefers to address social issues and express her opinion through the medium of cinema rather than using other platforms. Her forthcoming film Mulk talks about a minority community in India and how they face injustice due to their religion. Asked if she subscribes to the idea of the film, Taapsee told said, “From my school days I have learnt that India is a secular, democratic and republic country where we treat people from every religion with equality. In fact, that is how we lead our life around our close circuit. Conflict started when we all grew up seeing a certain hatred is also growing, that we read in newspaper, see among few groups of people… Of course, such issues should be addressed and as an actress, all I can do, is use cinema as a medium to express my opinion.” “Since I am an actress and not a social activist, cinema is the best medium for me to state my views. I cannot talk about issues randomly, so I would rather use acting as a tool to reach out to more and more people,” she added. Taapsee is known for films like Pink, Naam Shabana and the short fillm Nitishastra, which have dealt with issues like moral policing on girls, rape and gender inequality. Being a Sikh girl who has grown up in an environment of communal harmony, Taapsee said.

Actor Priya Bhavani Shankar slams moral policing: Find another hopeful dream girl Chennai : Across industries, it has become normal for actresses to be ‘judged’ based on the clothes they wear. Priya Bhavani Shankar, who shot to fame with Meyaadha Maan and the recent Kadaikutty Singam, shot down one such comment recently to much applause. The actor had posted a picture of herself on Instagram, wearing a partially transparent black shirt. While there was nothing amiss about the picture, one comment from a ‘fan’ said, “Sutham had huge hopes for you No more a dream girl.. Hoping it wont get any worse thou (sic).” Priya, responded back in a strongly-worded comment, that silenced any moral policing or judgement. “Thank you very much but I don’t want to be a dream girl to a man of such filthy judgements. All the best, find another hopeful dream girl. (sic)”. In response, the ‘fan’ replied, “The true thing is we the loyal people u have those who support this image are the filthy one’s… This ain’t about being Orthodox it’s juz we care for you sadly you don’t see that.. Anyways you have your freedom(sic)” Receiving much support for her reply, she further explained her stance in a later comment. “This is definitely not a reply with head weight. Am just trying to resist people like you deciding how I should hold my values and culture! Am surprised how people are trying to save culture by zooming in and out my picture. A little piece of semi-transparent cloth has taken a toll on this culture. I don’t see anything so alarming in my picture. Seriously? You think people like you zooming it and picking nonsense and speaking nonsense.

Akshay Kumar: I would like to make a biopic on Hima Das

Mumbai : Actor-producer Akshay Kumar, who is busy promoting his forthcoming sports-drama film Gold, says he would like to make a biopic on the life of Indian sprinter Hima Das who became the first Indian athlete to win a gold in a track event at just 18 years of age. Interacting with media at an event organized by Edelweiss group here on Saturday to support and wish India contingent for Asian Games 2018, Akshay, asked on which Indian sports personality he would like to make a biopic as a producer, said, “I would like to make a biopic on Hima Das because she is a track runner.” “I think it was a very rare feat to achieve because somebody who comes from the interiors of India and wins a gold medal in track (running) event was really

Is Katrina Kaif the new female lead of Salman Khan’s Bharat? Mumbai :Priyanka Chopra is no longer a part of Ali Abbas Zafar’s upcoming directorial Bharat, and if the reports are to be believed, Katrina Kaif has been roped in as a replacement of Priyanka. It is also being said that Katrina was the “original choice of the movie producers.” “Katrina will join the team September onwards, and before that, she will finish all her other work commitments,” Agancy quoted a source as saying. “Producers Atul and Alvira Agnihotri share a warm relationship with Katrina Kaif and when this whole mishap happened, they just called her and sorted out her dates. She will play the lead opposite Salman Khan now,” said. However, nothing has been confirmed yet. It is also being reported that Kareena Kapoor Khan was also in the running for the role but apparently, she had already given her dates to another film. Meanwhile, comedian Sunil Grover, who will also be seen in Bharat, recently shared a video on Twitter, where he can be seen auditioning for the female lead of the film. Sunil tweeted the video and wrote, “Application for the vacancy from Nancy.” Recently, Disha Patani, who will reportedly be playing a trapeze artist in the film, shared her character’s name in the film. Disha will be seen essaying the role of Radha in Bharat.

incredible.” “India has been a little bit weak when it comes to performing in track events and I feel we should encourage and support that form of sports to show the world that we have great talent when it comes to running as we daily run so fast to catch a bus or a train… so, I would love to make biopic on her life,” he added. Akshay, to a query whether he feels that films can generate importance of sports in the minds of the audience and help India to become a better sports nation, said, “I really liked the story of Gold which is due for its release. I thought that this story needs to be told.” “It is a very interesting and real story. There are some glorious achievements achieved by our people, by our country but it’s not in the public domain.”

The Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter film earns Rs 58.19 crore

Mumbai : Shashank Khaitan’s Dhadak has earned Rs 58.19 crore. The film, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, minted Rs 4.02 crore on Saturday. Dhadak is a remake of the Marathi film Sairat. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted out the figures. “#Dhadak is back on track on second Sat… Growth on second Sat [vis-à-vis second Fri]: 54.02%… Expected to witness gains on second Sun too… [Week 2] Fri 2.61 cr, Sat 4.02 cr. Total: Rs 58.19 cr. India biz,” he said. Dhadak faces two new releases – Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3 starring Sanjay Dutt and Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout. film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote in her 1.5 star review, “That sense of playfulness which director Shashank Khaitan, going by his previous films (Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya and Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya) exhibited in his earlier work, a quality which made his young leads spark, is missing from Dhadak. So is Johar’s uncanny ability to ratchet up emotions, to create frisson between two lovers, those moments full of awareness of the other, without which no love story can be effective.” Recently, director Shashank Khaitan responded to the criticism labelled against Dhadak.

Zaheer Khan suggests tougher YoYo test standards for Indian team India head coach Ravi Shastri and captain Virat Kohli had made it clear that the Yo-yo test will play an important role in the selection process New Delhi : “Yo-Yo test is not going anywhere, you pass the test, you play for India,” said Ravi Shastri before the Indian team departed for their England tour and the head coach made his intentions and plans clear about picking up a player. The test has certainly drawn mixed response but as far as the coach and skipper Virat Kohli are concerned, the Yo-yo test will continue to play an important role in the selection process. Former seamer Zaheer Zaheer Khan has backed the test as a fitness criterion while

also calling on the fitness team to make it tougher to bring it up to the global standards. “What I know is that the parameter set by the current Indian team (16.1) is pretty low compared to the world standard. If a player is not even able to achieve that mark, then I believe there is some problem somewhere,” he was quoted as saying by said. “Look, for me any parameter is acceptable as long as it is uniformly applied. If the criteria is same for the top most and the junior most cricketer, I have no

New Delhi: ‘Swimming’ against the tide, former Australia cricketer Mike Hussey on Saturday said India should prefer veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin over Kuldeep Yadav in the upcoming Test series against England. “I don’t know what the selectors are thinking. Personally, I feel Ashwin should play ahead of Kuldeep. He has more than 300 Test wickets. Ashwin deserves his place in the starting XI,” ‘Mr Cricket’, as he is fondly called, said. Hussey’s opinion is in contrary to the prevailing viewpoint of many experts, who have backed the 23-year-

old chinaman bowler’s selection in the Test squad for the five-match series. “Ashwin against the left-handers could play a big role. Kuldeep has done brilliantly but I feel India should persist with Ashwin. Kuldeep is young and can learn along the way,” Hussey, who is here as a Star Sports commentator for Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), said. Asked if India could win the Test series, he said the team has a great chance. “India is a good team playing good cricket. A lot of the players have been in England for a while, that is part of the battle.

India vs England: IPL friendships will be forgotten, says Jos Buttler

issues. Obviously, there is focus on skill but this Indian team wants to be a fit unit. Virat and the team management is trying to ensure that for the benefit of the team,” he concluded. Despite the fact that the mark set by the team management is low, a lot of players have failed to qualify the test. Recently, Ambati Rayudu missed the flight to England after he failed to clear the Yoyo test while fast bowler Mohammed Shami too was dropped from the limited-overs side for the same reason.

New Delhi : Jos Buttler said that friendships forged between the Indian and English players during the IPL will be forgotten on the pitch during the upcoming five Test series. “There are a few guys I have played with,” said Buttler. “Naturally you have friendships with them but on the field they seem to be forgotten and everyone is competitive.” Buttler played with the Mumbai Indians in 2017 and the Rajasthan Royals this year. He shared a dressing room with Hardik Pandya and Ajinkya Rahane in both instances. “There are familiar faces, guys you know a bit more about than just the cricket. That is one of the great things about world cricket now. You get these opportunities to play around the world and meet these great people. There is a lot more familiarity between the

sides than there ever has been before,” said Buttler. He said that conversations between IPL teammates is not something that can never happen during the series. “Not on the pitch but maybe on the training days and around the lunch room. Moeen played with Virat at RCB and [Yuzvendra] Chahal. I saw them getting on quite well. I have played with Hardik Pandya at Mumbai so you are open to having a chat. “I am sure there will be moments in the Test series, especially on the field, when those things look like they have been forgotten. It will be highly competitive. What you have to remember is people can get on well but the reason guys have got to international sport is they want to win and are competitive so it will be no different on the field. Off it maybe a little bit.”

into India’s hands as well. One of the keys is scoring big runs. That will put scoreboard pressure on England. England are a very good team in home conditions, they understand the conditions. They get a lot support from their crowds. I think India have some good support as well. It should be a fantastic series,” the

Australian, who was batting coach of IPL champions CSK, said. When asked if veterans James Anderson and Stuart Broad would have a big role in the series, he responded in the positive. “Underestimate them at your own peril. Yes, better cricket may have been behind them but you still can’t write off great players and they always come back and show their class. They always pose a threat. They are still fantastic competitors and will perhaps have a say in the way the series is played out,” he said.

Getting used to the Duke balls, getting used to the pitches. It takes a while to get used to it,” he said. “One more advantage is that they are playing later in the summer. The pitches generally are a bit more flatter. Perhaps the spinners might come into play a bit more. The weather, which is currently dry and hot, that might play

India has enough firepower to make up for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, says Darren Gough

New Delhi: Former England pacer Darren Gough feels India have enough firepower in their pace attack to cover for the absence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah in the first Test beginning in Birmingham on Wednesday. Gough spoke about the different options available in front of skipper Virat Kohli in both pace and spin departments, and remarked that India’s well-rounded attack is suitable for any pitch that is laid out in this

ensuing series, despite missing Bhuvneshwar for three Tests and Bumrah for the series opener. “Bhuvneshwar is a big loss and he wasn’t at his best during the ODI series because he was carrying an injury. But India aren’t

a side anymore that is dependent on one bowler. Earlier, they were dependent on Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath or Zaheer Khan, that is no longer the case. India are suited for all sorts of wickets, and they look prepared and geared

up for this Test series,” Gough told said. “Today, you have to be on top of your game to beat India, whether you are playing at home or away because they posses everything in their bowling attack. Kumar gives you swing, Bumrah is a skidding seam bowler, Umesh Yadav can move the new ball as well and he has got pace, Mohammed Shami is strong and hits the deck hard, while Ishant Sharma has experience, aggression and he can bowl lots of overs.” He

reckons the spin attack too is lethal with the addition of chinaman Kuldeep Yadav. “On top of that you have three spinners. R Ashwin is nearly unplayable in Indian conditions, Ravindra Jadeja keeps taking wickets and Kuldeep Yadav has already proven himself in England. Selection is not going to be easy and good luck to Indian team management, especially in the spin department, as someone will be upset when he is left out in Birmingham,” he said.

New Delhi : India batsman Shreyas Iyer on Saturday revealed that a bit of advice early on in his career from former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has helped him to focus on the sport. The 23-year old, who was named as Gautam Gambhir’s replacement as Delhi Daredevils skipper during the 2018 season of Indian Premier League, during a talk show, said that Dhoni asked him to stay away from newspapers and social media when he was new to the

Indian dressing room. “After I joined the Indian cricket team, MS Dhoni advised me that I need to avoid reading the newspapers and should try to stay away from social media as much as possible,” Iyer was quoted as saying by news agency said. “Social media has become a big part of our lives and I try to manage it well but it’s the criticism that motivates me and keeps me going,” the batsman added. The youngster further went on to talk

about how he handled attention from the fans and was cautious to spot people who were looking to take his advantage. “Soon after the auction news was out, this girl whom I knew started messaging me. On confronting her as to why she is desperately trying to reach out, I got to know that she was doing so because she was happy for me. That’s when I understood that rather than getting to know me, she was behind the money,” Iyer said.

New Delhi : India will begin the five-match Test series against England from Wednesday and wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has said he is “nervous and a little excited” about the challenge to play in England. This is Karthik’s first Test series since making a return against Afghanistan in June. “I am feeling nervous and a little excited. Playing Test cricket after a long time, and I am looking forward to it. Playing in England is a great challenge, and like any other player, I am as excited as I can be,” Karthik told BCCI.

TV. The right-hander is the only player from the 2007 Test squad that last won the series in England. Recollecting the memories from that tour, Karthik talked about the banters and arguments that happened during the series. “I don’t remember so far back, my memory is so bad. I do remember it as the

highlight of my career (so far). It was a terrific Test series – one of the few series where both sides played the same XI through the three Tests. It just goes to show how competitive it was. Both teams didn’t feel the need to make any changes, which shows the kind of quality of cricket in the contest,” Karthik said.

New Delhi : India will lock horns with England in five-match Test series away from home starting August 1. Former cricketer Graham Gooch has said that India captain Virat Kohli is a top-ranked player and would be looking to improve his batting record in England. Kohli scored 134 runs in five Test matches on his last tour of England. “He (Kohli) is a top-ranked player in the world at the moment and I think a dangerous customer for England as he has the motivation to improve his record in this country. Every player wants to

be known to be able to play well in all sorts of conditions,” Gooch told BCCI.TV in an interview. Talking about Kohli and his England skipper Joe Root, Gooch suggested that the two batsmen should be assessed on the basis of the matches they have won for their respective teams and added that the Indian captain is keen on doing well away from home. “And I think one thing that people should remember what sets them apart in the modern era — people who watch shouldn’t remember how many runs they score or what innings they played. But (they

should remember) when Virat Kohli or Joe Root played an innings, that helped them win the match for their team. That’s what counts. Not the number of runs. It might be 50 in difficult conditions or 150 on a flat wicket but when your performance helps your side win the match, that’s when you should be proud of,” said Gooch. “Sometimes in the past, India have struggled when they have travelled abroad. Obviously, they have been very strong at home but they are improving all the time. And Virat Kohli is very determined to do well.

India vs England: Excited but nervous on return to Test cricket in England, says Dinesh Karthik

Former SLC boss alleges cropping up of Arjuna Ranatunga, Aravinda de Silva names in match-fixing complaint Thilanga Sumathipala on Sunday made the allegation that 1996 World Cup winners Arjuna Ranatunga and Aravinda de Silva were the first players from the country to be named for alleged match-fixing.

New Delhi : Former Sri Lanka Cricket President Thilanga Sumathipala on Sunday made the allegation that 1996 World Cup winners Arjuna Ranatunga

and Aravinda de Silva were the first players from the country to be named for alleged match-fixing. “Arjuna and Aravinda were the names mentioned, they

were alleged to have taken 15,000 dollars from someone named Gupta,” Sumathipala told reporters at the north-central town of Anuradhapura. He said

his (SLC) administration at that time was blamed for not investigating the complaint of alleged match-fixing by Ranatunga and de Silva. Sumathipala was firing

a salvo at Ranatunga in the duo’s long running public slanging match. Ranatunga, a current government minister, had earlier accused Sumathipala’s family of

having links with bookies. He said that SLC has gone down to a precipice because of corrupt management of the game under Sumathipala. Ranatunga’s brother

Nishantha had filed a court case to stay the May 30 elections of SLC when Sumathipala seemed ready to be re-elected. Nishantha was one of two rivals

of Sumathipala for the position of SLC boss. The Minister of Sports has appointed a Competent Authority to run the SLC while elections are being delayed.

Surat : Days after the Federation of Gujarat Weavers Association (FOGWA) and its subsidiary Pandesara Weavers Association wrote to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Odisha finance minister Shashi Bhusen Behera visited Surat on Saturday for a study tour of the power loom industry. The weavers’ associations had written a letter to Patnaik on July 17, requesting him to take up the issues of the power loom industry of Surat with the GST council. Over five lakh

pani puri go away but appreciated the move as it was done keeping people’s health in mind. However, many also highlighted that the poor sellers would suffer huge losses and the government should have come up with hygiene regulation instead of banning.

Ahmedabad : Days after Pakistan’s Prime Minister-elect Imran Khan said “If India takes one step towards us, we will take two steps toward them” while commenting on the Kashmir issue, Madhya Pradesh Governor and former Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel on Saturday said that the words used by the chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were those once used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was at the helm of affairs in Gujarat. powerloom workers, hailing from Behrampur and Ganjam districts of Odisha, work in Surat’s power loom industry. However, since the implementation of GST, over 40,000 workers have been unemployed. In their letter, members of

FOGWA had requested the Odisha CM to make representations to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Finance minister to remove the ban refund of the Input Tax credit. During the 28th meeting of the GST council on July 21, the council had allowed

Clash in Chharanagar: All accused sent to jail, Jignesh Mevani demands actions against police

Mevani told the community not to tolerate any injustice but at the same time told them not to defend anyone among them who has done wrong Ahmedabad : The 29 people arrested on Friday at Chharanagar for alleged rioting and assault on a cop were on Saturday sent to Sabarmati Central Jail under judicial custody as police did not seek their remand. Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani, meanwhile, reached

Chharanagar to show solidarity with the community, and sought action against police for allegedly beating up innocent people. The two Chhara men who had allegedly assaulted a sub-inspector on Thursday night is still untraceable, police said. Following the assault on

Sub-Inspector D K Mori, who was patrolling in Chharanagar, police conducted raids in the area that ended up in violent clash with the locals. According to advocates who represented the accused before judge R B Solanki, 20 out of the 29 accused recorded their

statements. They have alleged that they were mercilessly beaten up by the police for no reason. The court ordered the jail authorities to get the accused medically examined and sought a report. Daring the police to resort to similar action in posh localities like Satellite and

BJP offering Congress leaders money to quit party: GPCC chief

Ahmedabad : Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Chavda on Saturday alleged that party leaders are being threatened and also offered money to join the BJP. He made the remarks while responding to questions by reporters in connection with several Congress leaders in Rajkot district panchayat crossing over to the BJP two days ago. “It is a well-

planned conspiracy of the BJP. Several Congress leaders from different districts called me up and told me that BJP is using threat and money power

to force them to quit the Congress,” alleged Chavda. He, however, did not name the leaders who have received threats from the BJP. He alleged

that the BJP was doing this out of frustration because the party was slowly losing its base. “But these tactics will not work,” said the Congress leader. Chavda said that the Congress was launching a campaign from the first week of August under which party workers all over the state would reach out to the people, and inform them about the failures of the state government.

Navrangpura, Mevani said that action should be taken against police for framing and beating up innocent people. “I won’t say that none of our men are guilty but we won’t tolerate attack on a single person. I said the same thing in Bhudarpura colony in Ambawadi where Dalits

were attacked. If I or my family members have taken law in our hands, we should be dealt with as per law. But at the same time, if police have attacked, action should be taken as per law,” he told a gathering of Chharas. “I want to say this before the people of Gujarat that

why don’t (police) take similar action in Satellite or Navrangpura?,” he asked, adding that police enter Muslim localities, Dalit and Chhara communities’ societies, but they should also enter posh neighbourhoods. Mevani told the community not to tolerate any injustice

BJP in a fix over Dalit groups' Bharat Bandh on August 9

New Delhi: The BJP is treading with caution as it prepares its response to a host of demands of Dalit activists ahead of their proposed Bharat Bandh on August 9. While a number of its Dalit MPs and allies, including Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, want it to respond positively to their demands, several BJP leaders are advising caution, as an overzealous response from the party-led

government may not go down well with its core support base. Sources within the BJP have termed the party's silence on the demand of removing National Green Tribunal chairman Justice AK Goel strategic, as supporting or openly opposing such a call is fraught with risks. Several party MPs said on the condition of anonymity that their traditional voters, from upper

castes and sections of Other Backward Castes, have firmly backed the party so far despite their reservations about issues such as quota for Dalits in promotions. The demands include removal of NGT chairman Goel We want the party to respond fairly to the issues of Dalit interests. But it should not be seen going out of the way to meet every demand of Dalit groups.

but at the same time told them not to defend anyone among them who has done wrong. A group of Chharas, meanwhile, approached Sardarnagar police station, seeking permission for a rally on Sunday, which was granted. Chharanagar is known for running illegal breweries.

Poor quality of HC verdicts bothers SC New Delhi: The Supreme Court has said that courts need to pass a reasoned order in every case which would enable the parties involved in the litigation to understand as to "why one party has won and other has lost". The top court remanded back to the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Indore, a matter related to provident fund contribution for deciding it afresh.
