Short News KJ Alphons blames ‘biased’ reports on women safety for decline in tourism

Beijing/New Delhi: India is fighting a perception battle on safety for foreign tourists due to “unfair and biased” media reports that the country was the most unsafe for women, Tourism Minister KJ Alphons said. Alphons, who is currently visiting Beijing, Wuhan and Shanghai along with about 20 leading Indian travel agents to woo Chinese tourists to visit India, said that incidents like lynching are bad for India’s reputation. The incidents of lynching are not affecting tourism “big time”, he told reporters after holding a roadshow on Tuesday. “Well, not on a big-time basis... not really. But anything happening like that is bad for the reputation of the country. We will not say it’s good for the reputation of the country,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called them criminals and asked the states to take action.

SC asked Maharashtra govt to file response to petition challenging arrest of activists by Pune police on terror charges.

Five arrested activists to be kept under house arrest till Sept 6: SC Arrests of Left-wing activists an attempt to silence masses: Prakash Ambedkar

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed all five human rights activists arrested in the Bhima-Koregaon case to be kept under house arrest till September 6, saying dissent was the “safety valve” of democracy. The five activists will now not be sent to jail till September 6 but will remain in house arrest under police watch. The apex court questioned the Maharashtra police for arresting these activists around nine months of the BhimaKoregaon incident. “Dissent is the safety valve of democracy and if you don’t allow these safety valves, it will burst,” the bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra said. The Supreme Court also issued notice to the Maharashtra state government and the state police on the plea filed by five intellectuals, including historian Romila Thapar and economists Prabhat Patnaik and Devika Jain, against the arrest of the rights activists yesterday in connection with the case. The counsel, appearing for Maharashtra, raised the issue of maintainability of the plea, saying a “stranger” cannot seek relief for the activists who have already approached the high courts. Prominent Telugu poet Varavara Rao was arrested from Hyderabad, while activists Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Farreira were nabbed from Mumbai, trade union activist Sudha Bhardwaj from Faridabad in Haryana and civil liberties activist Gautam Navalakha was arrested from New Delhi.

Mumbai: Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh leader Prakash Ambedkar termed the arrests of Leftwing activists for suspected Maoist links as an attempt to “silence” the masses. He said those raising voices against the government were NGOs and non-political organisations, but had their roots in the masses. “With these raids, the government is trying to silence the masses, but I doubt whether the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will be silent. They will be more active in opposing the government because they do not have any stake,” he said. “They do not contest elections. Their only interest is to see that democracy and human rights are safeguarded in this country. That is their motive. They will be more aggressive now than earlier,” the former Member of Parliament (MP) said. Ambedkar claimed that when there were raids on right-wing outfit ‘Sanatan Sanstha’, he had said that similar action would be taken against others and that attempts would be made to show a link with ‘Elgar Parishad’. The Elgar Parishad conclave was organised in Pune a day before the Koregaon-Bhima violence on January 1.

New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday accused Congress of “peddling untruth” on the Rafale aircraft deal, saying the “false campaign” by the opposition party and its leader Rahul Gandhi was seriously compromising national security. In a Facebook blog, the finance minister posted a set of 15 questions to Rahul Gandhi and said the deal NDA government had entered into with France on April 10, 2015 for purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets was on “better”

terms than the one agreed to by the UPA government in 2007. “I am asking these questions as his misadventure is impairing national interest and I hope Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party would respond immediately,” he wrote. “Congress party’s false campaign launched on Rafale aircraft deal based on peddled untruth has been casting a cloud on the InterGovernmental agreement & seriously compromising national security,” he said.

The country is heading towards dictatorship which is not right”, Lalu Yadav said. I have full faith in the judiciary”, Lalu Yadav said. The mystery of the missing competition

Is market power in the US becoming increasingly concentrated among a handful of superstar firms? The great and the good of the global central banking community sounded a warning note about this at the annual Jackson Hole symposium late last week. If such fears are well-founded, it has implications for a wide range of economic ills, from inequality to low productivity growth. A substantial amount of evidence suggests that there is something to them. A widely cited 2017 paper by Gustavo Grullon, Yelena Larkin and Roni Michaely, Are US Industries Becoming More Concentrated?, found that over the past two decades, over 75% of US industries have become more concentrated, with dominant companies capturing greater market share. In another 2017 study, Jan De Loecker and Jan Eeckhout examined US firmlevel data going back to 1950, and noted that markups have risen from an average level of 18% above marginal cost in 1980 to 67% now. That hints at a break in the circuit somewhere: Rising markups should attract competition, bringing them down again. Such concentration isn’t confined to the US. Research by The Economist and the Resolution Foundation has found that if the British economy is split into about 250 sectors, “in nearly 60% of them, the four biggest firms claim a larger share of revenues than they did a decade ago”. Profit margins have risen by nearly 80% since 1980, disproportionately skewed towards larger companies. For that matter, there is a healthy amount of concern about similar problems in Japan. This is a headache for everyone from central bankers to competition regulators and politicians. For instance, does the entrenchment of corporate power at the top of the ladder explain why the Phillips curve is out of whack in the US? Recent research by the Roosevelt Institute, which looks at market concentration from the perspective of workers rather than firms, suggests it could be. The institute found a relatively high degree of monopsony in the US labour market—and that such labour concentration resulted in lower wages. That sheds light on the broken link between employment and inflation in the US. Such a divergence between labour wages and corporate profits and power fuels the resentment of the political and economic elite that is currently widespread in the US. Given the global impact of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy and US trade policies pushed by a political establishment trying to tamp down the resentment, this is the world’s problem.

M a n c h e s t e r : Borussia Dortmund has agreed to sign Spanish forward Paco Alcacer on loan from Barcelona with an option to buy. The Bundesliga side says the 24-year-old Alcacer completed a medical on Tuesday and will wear the No. 9 for the club. Should Dortmund take up the option to keep the player, he will be tied to the club for a further four years after the one-year loan spell. Kicker magazine reported Dortmund was paying 2 million euros ($2.3 million) for the loan spell, while a permanent transfer fee would be 23 million euros

($27 million) if the club decides to keep him. Dortmund had been looking for a striker following the departure of PierreEmerick Aubameyang to Arsenal in January, and the end of Michy Batshuayi’s loan spell as his replacement. Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc says: “We’re firmly convinced this type of player will be a good fit for our style of play.” Alcacer, who joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2016, scored 43 goals and set up two more in 151 Spanish league appearances — including a season at Getafe. He has six goals in 13 appearances for Spain.

London : India captain Virat Kohli feels cricket is losing out on quality because of the “commercial aspects” which are taking over the game and also criticised proposed experiments such as the 100-ball format being pushed by the England Board. Kohli, who leads India across all three formats also plays the BCCI’s marquee flagship event the Indian Premier League for six weeks, making for a very exhaustive schedule. “I’m already very… I wouldn’t say frustrated, but sometimes it can get very demanding of you when you have to play so much cricket regularly. I feel somewhere the commercial aspect is taking over the real quality of cricket and that hurts me,” Kohli told the ‘Wisden Cricket Monthly’ on Wednesday. While the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is starting a new 100-

ball format, which has drawn flak from all quarters, the Indian skipper announced that he won’t be a part of “one more format”. “Obviously for the people involved (ECB) in the whole process and the set-up it will be really exciting but I cannot think of one more format, to be honest,” Kohli said. “Honestly, I don’t want to be a testing sort of a cricketer for any new format. I don’t want to be someone who’s going to be part of that World XI who comes and launches the 100-ball format.” Kohli also explained the difference between leagues like IPL or Big Bash League from the proposed 100-ball format. “I love playing the IPL, I love watching the BBL, because you are working towards something, competing against high-quality sides and it gets your competitive juices flowing.

Roger Federer clarifies joke about retirement after US Open win

New Delhi: Roger Federer sent something of a shock wave through the tennis world with what he thought was an obvious joke after improving to 18-0 in first-round matches at the U.S. Open. “I’m happy I never stumbled at the first hurdle,” Federer said during his oncourt interview Tuesday night. “Almost time to retire _ but not yet.” Some folks’ reaction might best be summed up as: Wait. WHAT?! So the 37-year-

old Federer was asked at his news conference to clarify his comment after the 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory over 117th-ranked Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Why did Federer mention retirement? Turned out it was completely harmless. “That was meaning, like, ‘I never lost a first-round match here at the Open. I won all my 18. You don’t want that (loss) to happen next year.’ I said, ‘Maybe I could retire now,

because I protect my 18 firstround wins here.’ That’s what I meant with it,” he said. “It’s a total joke, yes.” And, then, addressing all of the members of the media in the room, just to make absolutely sure everyone understood what he’d been thinking, Federer added with a smile: “So please don’t read into it. Don’t even write that word.” For years, actually, Federer has dealt with questions about when he might retire.

international Hawaii residents hit by floods from Hurricane Lane as new storm forms

Hawaii : Flash flood warnings were issued on Tuesday for the Hawaiian island of Kauai, with residents on the north coast told to evacuate and others left stranded by high water as the remnants of Hurricane Lane drenched the archipelago and a new storm brewed in the Pacific Ocean. Hawaii was spared a direct hit from a major hurricane as Lane diminished to a tropical storm as it approached and then drifted west, further from land. But rain was still pounding the island chain, touching off flooding on Oahu and Kauai. “It has been a steady rain since after Lane but I got up 2:30 a.m. (Hawaiian Standard Time) to the National Weather Service flash flood advisory and that’s when we put out the release as well as an island-wide telephone call,” County of Kauai spokesman Alden Alayvilla said. The advisory urged residents near Hanalei Bridge on the north side of the island to evacuate their homes due to rising stream levels.

White House probes Google after Donald Trump accuses it of bias

Washington : US President Donald Trump on Tuesday accused Google’s search engine of promoting negative news articles and hiding “fair media” coverage of him, vowing to address the situation without providing evidence or giving details of action he might take. Trump’s attack against the Alphabet Inc unit follows a string of grievances against technology companies, including social media Twitter Inc and Facebook Inc , which he has accused of silencing conservative voices, and Amazon.com Inc, which he has said is hurting small businesses and benefiting from a favorable deal with the US Postal Services. He frequently berates news outlets for what he perceives as unfair coverage. Google denied any political bias, saying in a statement that its search engine is “not used to set a political agenda and we don’t bias our results toward any political ideology.” Trump said in several tweets on Tuesday that Google search results for “Trump News” were “rigged” against him because they showed only coverage from outlets like CNN and not conservative publications, suggesting the practice was illegal. “I think Google is really taking advantage of our people,” Trump said on Tuesday in the Oval Office. “Google, and Twitter and Facebook, they are really treading on very, very troubled territory, and they have to be careful. It’s not fair to large portions of the population.” Facebook declined to comment. Twitter did not comment when asked for a response. In congressional testimony, both companies have denied engaging in partisan censorship.

Nikki Haley says US Rohingya report ‘consistent’ with UN findings

United Nations : Findings of a US State Department investigation into Myanmar’s Rohingya crisis are “consistent” with those of a report by UN investigators released this week that called for Myanmar’s commander-in-chief and other generals be tried for genocide, the US ambassador to the United Nations said on Tuesday. Addressing the UN Security Council, Nikki Haley said “the world can no longer avoid the difficult truth of what happened.” She did not use the term “genocide” and the State Department has said it had not yet concluded whether it shared the determination of “genocidal intent” that Monday’s UN report attached to the attacks on Rohingya Muslims. However, Haley said that of the more than 1,000 randomly selected Rohingya Muslims surveyed in the State Department’s own report, “fully one fifth” witnessed more than 100 victims being killed or injured. She said 82 percent had seen a killing, more than half had witnessed sexual violence and 45 percent had witnessed a rape. “The report identifies one group as the perpetrator of the overwhelming majority of these crimes: the Burmese military and security forces,” Haley said, referring to the US report. She said the Security Council must hold those responsible for the violence to account and added, “The whole world is watching what we do next and if we will act.” Haley’s comments provided the first details of the State Department report compiled from 1,024 interviews at refugee camps in Bangladesh and completed in late April.
