The coalition government has several senior leaders with whose guidance the government would complete its five-year term, he said. “Let there be no apprehensions in this regard,” he said. His statement comes amid speculation that some ‘disgruntled’MLAs were being wooed by BJP and there was factionalism in Congress and Janata Dal(S) on several issues that affect the functioning of the government.

Exploring alternative oil supplies so ‘our friend’ India isn’t affected: US

New Delhi/ New York: With a tougher round of US sanctions on Iran coming into effect from November 4, a top Trump administration official said Washington recognises India’s need for significant oil imports and is having conversations to ensure there are alternative supplies of the fuel “so that our friend India’s economy is not adversely affected”. Earlier this year, the US had withdrawn from the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal and reimposed a series of tough sanctions on Iran. While the first phase of sanctions is already in place, the sanctions would come into full force on November 4 and the US expects all countries, including India, to bring down their import of Iranian oil to zero by then.

China defends move to block India’s bid at UN to list Masood Azhar global terrorist Washington: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has defended Beijing’s repeated blockage of India’s bids at the United Nations to list Masood Azhar, chief of Pakistan-based terror group Jaishe-Mohammed (JeM) as a global terrorist. China, while defending the terrorist, argued that the issue lacks “consensus” among the members of the UN Security Council as well as the “directly concerned” parties - India and Pakistan. Masood Azhar is accused of several deadly terrorist attacks in India, including one on the Uri military base in Jammu and Kashmir in 2016, in which 17 security personnel were killed.

In her address to the UN, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj described terrorism as an ‘existential threat’ to humanity.

Lucknow techie death: aRajnath speaks to Adityanath, seeks strong action

UN must accept it needs fundamental reform, says Sushma Swaraj

United Nations: In a strong attack against Pakistan, India told the UN General Assembly on Saturday that its neighbour’s commitment to terrorism as an instrument of official policy has not abated one bit. In her address to the General Debate of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly here, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj described terrorism as an “existential threat” to humanity. Even as the perpetrators of the 9/11 terror attacks in New York met their fate, Swaraj said the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack Hafiz Saeed still roams the streets of Pakistan with impunity. “Pakistan’s commitment to terrorism as an instrument of official policy has not abated one bit. Neither has its belief in hypocrisy,” Swaraj said. “The biggest challenge of

our era comes from the existential threats of climate change and terrorism. We imagined that the arrival of the 21st Century would bring with it an age of common good, defined by cooperation in the quest for peace and prosperity. But here in New York, the horrific tragedy of 9/11, and in Mumbai, the catastrophe of 26/11 became the nightmares that shattered our dreams,” Swaraj said. She said the demon of terrorism now stalks the world, at a faster pace somewhere, a slower pace elsewhere, but life-threatening everywhere. “In our case, terrorism is bred not in some faraway land, but across our border to the west. Our neighbour’s expertise is not restricted to spawning grounds for terrorism; it is also an expert in trying to mask malevolence with verbal duplicity,” Swaraj said.

Hospitals were overwhelmed by influx of injured, with many being treated in open air, while others helped to retrieve the dead.

Nearly 400 killed, scores missing after earthquake, tsunami hits Indonesia

Palu: Nearly 400 people were killed when a powerful quake sent a tsunami barrelling into the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, officials said Saturday, as hospitals struggled to cope with hundreds of injured and rescuers scrambled to reach the stricken region. The national disaster agency put the official death toll so far at 384, all of them in the tsunami-struck city of Palu, but warned the toll was likely to rise. In the city - home to around 350,000 people - partially covered bodies lay on the ground near the shore, the day after tsunami waves 1.5 metres (five feet) came ashore. There were also concerns over the whereabouts of hundreds of people preparing for a beach festival due to start Friday evening, the disaster agency said. Hospitals were overwhelmed by the influx

of injured, with many people being treated in the open air, while other survivors helped to retrieve the remains of those who died. One man was seen carrying the muddy corpse of a small child. The tsunami was triggered by a strong quake that brought down buildings and sent locals fleeing for higher ground as a churning wall of water crashed into Palu, where there were widespread power blackouts. Dramatic video footage captured from the top floor of a parking ramp in Palu, nearly 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the quake’s epicentre, showed waves of water bring down several buildings and inundate a large mosque. “I just ran when I saw the waves hitting homes on the coastline,” said Palu resident Rusidanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

United Nations: India on Saturday warned that the UN risks falling into irrelevance in the absence of fundamental reforms, saying multilateralism will collapse if the world body remains ineffective. For long, India has been calling for the reform of the UN Security Council along with Brazil, Germany and Japan. The four countries support each others’ bids for the permanent seats in the top UN body. “I began by highlighting the unique and positive role of the UN, but I must add that step by slow step, the importance, influence, respect and value of this institution is beginning to ebb,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in her address to the General Debate of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly here. Swaraj emphasised that the UN must accept it needs fundamental reform. “Reform cannot be cosmetic. We need to change the institution’s head and heart to make both compatible to the contemporary reality,” she said. Swaraj warned against a delay in reforming the world body, saying reform must begin today as tomorrow could be too late. “If the UN is ineffective, the whole concept of multilateralism will collapse,” she said.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh Saturday spoke to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and asked him to take effective action in connection with the killing of man allegedly by police in Lucknow. The 38-yearold Vivek Tiwari was shot dead early Saturday morning by a policeman when the former allegedly refused to stop his car for checking in Lucknow’s posh Gomti Nagar neighbourhood, police said. “Spoke to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in connection with the Vivek Tiwari case in Lucknow. I have asked

the chief minister to take effective and just action in the matter,” the home minister tweeted in Hindi. A home ministry official said that during the telephonic conversation, Singh asked the chief minister to take strong action so that justice can be delivered to the victim. The home minister represents Lucknow in the Lok Sabha. Two constables were arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged by Apple executive Vivek Tiwari’s colleague Sana Khan, who was travelling with him. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said a CBI inquiry will be recommended if needed.

Rajnath hints at retaliatory action against Pak over BSF jawan killing

Muzaffarnagar: Two years after the 2016 surgical strikes, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday indicated that the Indian forces might have avenged the killing of a BSF jawan by hitting back Pakistan with heavy artillery across the border. Without clarifying the nature of the operation against Pakistani forces, Rajnath Singh said, “something big has happened, trust us, we cannot reveal what exactly happened but it was done 2-3 days back.” Speaking about the killing of BSF soldier Narendra Kumar, the Home Minister said, “Hamare BSF ka ek jawan, abhi uske saath jis tarike se badsalooki ki hai Pakistan ne, shayad aapne dekha hoga. Kuch hua hai, main bataoonga nahi. Hua hai, theek thaak hua hai, vishwaas rakhna bahut

theek thaak hua hai, 2-3 din pehle. Aur aage bhi dekhiega kya hoga (Something has happened, I can’t tell you what. It happened, something substantial. Trust me something big has happened 2-3 days back, now wait and watch what happens in the future).” The Times of India reported that BSF sources confirmed to the daily that Pakistan had suffered

Hollande’s claims on Rafale come at time when his associate faces charges: Sitharaman

Chennai: Union defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman Saturday said former French president Francois Hollande’s claims on the Rafale deal has come at a time when he himself was facing allegations that his associate had received some funds for some purpose. Speaking to reporters at the Officers Training Academy here, she said, “.. here was the former president of France who himself is facing an allegation of his associate having received some funds for some purpose. It (allegation) may be true or may not be true. But in such a situation, the former president saying this...”On September 21, a French media report quoted

Hollande as purportedly saying that the Indian government proposed Reliance Defence as partner for Dassault Aviation in the Rs 58,000 crore Rafale jet fighter deal and France did not have a choice. The defence minister also took a swipe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s August 30 tweet, saying he seemed to be predicting Hollande’s actions well in advance. “...it is done well in advance. It is very interesting,” she said. On August 30, Gandhi tweeted “Globalised corruption. This #Rafale aircraft really does fly far and fast! It’s also going to drop some big bunker buster bombs in the next couple of weeks.

heavy causalities. “Maine apne Border Security Force ke jawanon ko kaha tha, padosi hai, pehli goli matt chalana, lekin ek bhi goli agar udhar se chal jaati hai to phir apni goliyon ko matt gin’na (I told BSF not to fire first since they’re our neighbours, but also told them not to count their bullets if fired upon),” Rajnath Singh added.

Firms close to PM Modi to benefit from Electricity Act amendments, says Kejriwal

New Delhi: In a fresh salvo on the BJP-led government, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday termed the draft amendment to the Electricity Act, 2003 “very dangerous”, saying the proposed changes were aimed at benefitting “the big power companies that are known to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi”. Addressing the media at his residence in the national capital, the Delhi CM alleged that the draft amendment, which has been sent for review to all the states, would result in a steep hike in power tariff, thereby making it unaffordable for the middle class, let alone farmers and the poor. “I will write to all the chief ministers and personally meet those from non-BJP-ruled states against the amendments that are very dangerous and draconian.

Creating a purpose-driven organization

Which workplace model creates better outcomes? In the standard paradigm, managers assume employees are work-averse, implementing control systems they assume will ensure work gets done. However, there is an alternative view. In that model, leaders create a transcendent view of the organization among employees. They envision a higher purpose, rising above the usual business goals, affecting decisions big and small. In the standard paradigm, we find a selfperpetuating cycle that undermines the organization. The manager’s image of a work-resistant labour force creates systems of control, which creates resistance among employees and reconfirms the initial assumptions of the manager. Instead, we outline eight steps toward a purpose-driven organization, embracing the value of an authentic organizational higher purpose. Our objective here is to help managers challenge conventional assumptions. Envision an inspired workforce: The standard economist’s view is that employees perform only because they’re monitored or incentivized. This assumes inspiring employees with a higher purpose is impossible. Evidence suggests otherwise. Consider the example from The Inn at Little Washington in Washington, Virginia, recounted in a 2017 Forbes article. On their arrival, a husband and wife are crestfallen to discover they’d left the wife’s clothes in Pittsburgh several hours away.Along time staff member pulled up the company car, requested the couple’s address and house keys, drove eight hours, and returned in time for their 9 p.m. dinner reservation. When we coach executives to inspire others, we tell them to find that one positive example—a person, a team, a unit that exceeded the norms. Look for excellence, examine the purpose that drives the excellence, and then imagine it imbuing your entire workforce. Discover the purpose: You cannot invent higher purpose in an organization; it already exists. We recall working with a global oil company that spent months researching and articulating a purpose and a set of values with documents typically plastered to workplace walls. What they produced had no power. They had used only their heads to invent a higher purpose. They had not captured employees’ hearts. To do this, you must feel and understand the deepest common needs of your workforce. You must ask provocative questions, listen, and reflect. Be authentic: Even leaders who don’t believe in higher purpose face pressure from stakeholders to articulate one, leading to vacuous statements that cause more harm than good. But genuine sacrifices made by leaders in the interest of the organization’s higher purpose can be transformative. Consider what the Tata Group did for employees who died in terrorist attacks in the Taj hotel and other Mumbai locations, or the behaviour of hotel employees who took bullets to save customers.

My dad (Jackie Shroff) has had some really crazy fan experiences. When I receive this kind of love, I humbly accept the warm affection, but I reject drastic ways of displaying it. Neymar’s mouth bloodied between two goals in PSG rout of Nice

New Delhi : Neymar took a whack to the face, played on with cotton tissue in his bloodied mouth, and grabbed his second goal as Paris Saint-Germain won at Nice 3-0 in the French league on Saturday. The Brazil forward was caught by Wylan Cyprien’s flailing arm as they contested the ball near the hour mark of an otherwise one-sided contest. Cyprien was sent off for a second yellow card, and Neymar sat down for a while and had a little blood wiped from his mouth with a sponge. He got up and carried on, playing on for several minutes as he ran around with the makeshift plaster device protruding from his mouth. Neymar had already done damage of his own to Nice, expertly curling PSG in front midway through the first half from the edge of the penalty area. The ball

fizzed past goalkeeper Walter Benitez before he could react and lodged in the bottom right corner. That was enough for league leader PSG’s eighth straight win. France star Kylian Mbappe returned from a three-game ban and was desperate to score for PSG, but too much so. He fluffed a good chance right at the start of the second half by taking too many touches. After his shot was blocked near the line, attacking midfielder Christopher Nkunku stroked in the rebound to make it 2-0. PSG has struggled in the past at Nice, which always reserves a vitriolic welcome, but should have scored several more. When Neymar eventually got the third goal, it was in the second minute of injury time as Mbappe set him up for an easy tap-in.

New Delhi : Daniel Sturridge scored after three minutes on the pitch to prevent Liverpool falling to its first loss of the English Premier League, recovering a 1-1 draw at Chelsea on Saturday. The substitute striker sent a shot from outside of the penalty area swerving into the top right of the net in the 89th minute to cancel out Eden Hazard’s

second goal against Liverpool inside 70 hours. Hazard’s strike on Wednesday sent Liverpool out of the League Cup, and the latest ensured Liverpool’s 100 percent start was halted, even if Chelsea couldn’t collect three points. Hazard’s seventh goal in eight games in the league and cup came after 25 minutes in a move he started inside his

own half. After flicking the ball to Mateo Kovacic, the ball was held up by the midfielder as Hazard ran through unchecked to receive it back before striking low past goalkeeper Alisson. But Sturridge ensured Liverpool, like Chelsea and champion Manchester City, remain unbeaten after seven games.

Pankaj Advani settles for bronze in Asian Snooker Tour

New Delhi : Nineteentime world champion Pankaj Advani settled for a bronze medal in the Asian 10-red Snooker after losing to Ireland’s Brendan O’Donoghue 5-0 in the semifinal here Saturday. The Indian appeared off-colour a day after storming into the semifinal. The first frame saw O’Donoghue score two 20-plus breaks to win it 48-1. In the second, a break of 61 made it 2-0. The third frame was a close encounter but with a fluke snooker from the Irish cueist, the scores

swung in his favour, helping him extend the lead. O’Donoghue continued to be on song and completed the match with facile wins in the balance two frames. Pankaj returns with a silver and a bronze from the Asian tournaments. He now switches to billiards to play in the selection camp for the World Championship, to be held in Bengaluru from the October 3. The IBSF World Championships in both billiards and snooker will be conducted in Myanmar in November.

New Delhi : In the absence of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma led India as captain to their 7th Asia Cup title on Friday with a victory over Bangladesh in the final. Coach Ravi Shastri was quick to point out Sharma’s ability to remain calm on the field at the press conference. The 31-year-old, on being asked about the same, said he learned from former captain MS Dhoni on how to maintain calm in tense situations and has imbibed similar qualities in himself. “Whatever I have seen of him (Dhoni) leading the side for all these years, he never panicked, took time while taking decisions. There are those similarities in me too,” Sharma told

reporters at the press conference after the final match. “I also try to first think and then react. Yes, 50-over cricket gives you time but still you need to take time as well. I have learned this from seeing him, we have played for so many years under his captaincy,” he added. The right-handed batsman further added that Dhoni is always ready to pitch in with advice on the field. “Whenever there is something, he is ready with advice. We always keep on learning from Dhoni bhai because he has been such a great captain. Whenever there were questions or doubts on the field, he was always there to answer,” he said.

The Rise of Hindutva Destroyed Ahmedabad’s Indigenous Capitalist Traditions

Ahmedabad : The first part of this series dealt with broad movements in Ahmedabad’s history until India’s independence in 1947 keeping in mind and reviewing Saroop Dhruv’s recent work in Gujarati, Shahernama (Darshan, 2018). This article outlines the post-colonial journey of Ahmedabad while continuing to examine Shahernama. Gandhi’s death – occurring almost simultaneously with India’s independence – marked a break with his ideas in Ahmedabad, like elsewhere in India. The process had begun much earlier though. By the late 1930s, it was clear that Jawaharlal Nehru was the most popular leader of

the Indian masses: the industrialists, including the ones from Ahmedabad, rallied behind him. The zeitgeist of the time was economic planning. When the Congress party formed the National Planning Committee (NPC) chaired by Nehru in 1937, textile industrialists like Ambalal Sarabhai and Kasturbhai Lalbhai were brought on the NPC which favoured industrialisation and state interventions. Industrialists prepared their own plan, too, known as the Bombay Plan (1944-45) advocating a mixed economy for a post-independent India; a young and dynamic Kasturbhai Lalbhai played a key role in its formulation.

international Tensions in Barcelona as thousands protest for and against Catalan independence

Barcelona : Thousands of people demonstrating both for and against Catalan independence shut down parts of central Barcelona on Saturday, two days before the anniversary of a vote on secession last year that polarised the wealthy Spanish region. Tensions remain high in the independenceminded region a year after the October 1 vote deemed illegal by Madrid but celebrated by separatist Catalans. Pro-independence groups camped out overnight on Friday to prevent a demonstration in support of police deployed in Catalonia during last year’s failed bid to split from Spain. Catalan authorities said almost 1000 people were injured after police tried to stop voting at polling stations across the region a year ago. Two people were arrested during scuffles between separatist protesters and police on Saturday, in which demonstrators threw paint at riot police keeping them apart from the rival unionist demonstration.

Syria says vital border crossing with Jordan to reopen

syria : Preparations to reopen a vital border crossing between Syria and Jordan have been completed, setting the stage for its reopening on October 10, Syria’s state-run news agency said Saturday. Earlier, the agency reported that the Naseeb crossing had reopened and that the flow of trucks and transit across the border had begun. Jordan’s government spokesperson Jumana Ghunaimat denied the report, saying in a statement that the crossing border hasn’t opened yet and that technical committees from both sides were still meeting to deal with logistics, technical and infrastructure issues. Shortly afterwards, SANA said the border crossing would be formally reopened on Oct. 10. The reopening of the Naseeb border crossing would bring major relief to President Bashar Assad’s government by restoring a much-needed gateway for Syrian exports to Arab countries. Rebels seized control of the crossing in 2015, severing a lifeline and disrupting a major trade route between Syria and Jordan, Lebanon and the oil-rich Gulf countries.

Tesla’s Elon Musk had a deal from the SEC. It fell apart in a morning

Court allows Gujarat Gas to lay CGD network in Ahmedabad AHMEDABAD, After a legal battle of about 27 months, the Gujarat High Court has ruled in favour of State-run City Gas Distribution (CGD) player Gujarat Gas Ltd (GGL) in a case relating to unauthorised development of CGD network in Ahmedabad district area by the private sector player Adani Gas. In its ruling on September 28, the Gujarat High Court dismissed the petition of Adani Gas, and upheld the rights of GGL to develop infrastructure for supply of PNG, CNG and natural gas to commercial and industrial units in the areas of Sanand, Bavla and Dholka of Ahmedabad district. The said areas hold significant gas demand potential and can lead to remarkable improvement in the top line of the CGD player. The High Court order paves the way for supply of natural gas as a clean and green fuel in the areas of Sanand.

syria : When Thursday began, Elon Musk had a deal on the table. After days of tense negotiations, the Securities and Exchange Commission and lawyers for Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, had agreed on a settlement that would bring to a close a drama that has riveted Wall Street and Silicon Valley for the past two months. Under the terms of the agreement, what started on Aug. 7 — when Musk posted on Twitter that he had “funding secured” to take Tesla private for $420 a share — would end with some modest penalties and Musk staying on as chief executive, according to two people briefed on the talks. The plan, as it was negotiated by lawyers, was for Musk to step down as chairman of Tesla within 45 days and not resume that post for two years. The company, also a party to the proposed agreement, would add two new directors to its board. Musk and the company would pay tens of millions of dollars in fines, according to the people, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The negotiators planned to announce the agreement Thursday after the markets closed. But for Musk — an emotional, volatile and cocksure billionaire — the deal was unacceptable. The settlement with the SEC was a “neither admit nor deny” deal, meaning that Musk would not have acknowledged knowingly committing a violation. Musk, however, would not have been allowed to publicly state that he had done nothing wrong — and that was something he couldn’t accept, according to three people familiar with the talks. So on Thursday morning, as settlement papers were being drawn up and news releases were being drafted, Musk walked away. Lawyers, Tesla executives and advisers to the company were stunned that he would turn away from such a favorable settlement.
