why 2015 will be a do-or-die year for PM Narendra Modi There is little doubt that one man dominated 2014 in India: Narendra Modi. But can he dominate 2015 as well? On recent form, we can’t be sure. Let us first list his achievements so far. After a spectacular victory in May 2014, the Prime minister has been winning election after election for his party – the most recent one being Jharkhand - and has also restored the primacy of the PMO in policy matters. He is not just primus inter pares, but numero uno in all things that matter in this government. He has made waves in foreign policy, which is probably his most successful side so far. He has also made good changes in defence and railway leadership, with the induction of Manohar Parikkar and Suresh Prabhu as cabinet ministers.

Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi's detention order suspended, India slams Pakistan Islamabad: In another move set to enrage India, the Islamabad High Court on Monday issued an interim order to cancel detention notification of 2008 Mumbai attacks accused Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, paving the way for his release out of jail. However, the 26//11 attacks accused cannot walk out of the jail, until the order is signed by a judge. The move comes just a couple of days after Lakhvi, the 26/11 attacks mastermind on Friday challenged his detention under a public security order in the high court. Earlier, the Pakistan government had rejected his plea seeking release. Meanwhile, upset with the detention order cancellation of 26/11 mastermind, India's Ministry of External Affairs has summoned Pakistan's High Commissioner Abdul Basit. In its statement, the MEA said, "Pak High Commissioner Abdul Basit was summoned to Ministry of External Affairs by Foreign Secy Sujatha Singh this afternoon." The External Affairs

Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin, giving more information, on Twitter, informed that India's Foreign Secy has summoned the Pakistan's Envoy. Reacting over the matter, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi alleged that Lakhvi's case was that of lax prosecution and some even believe it was "collusive prosecution".

"Pakistan must realise that approach to terrorism cannot be selective ---one for India and the other for Pakistan," Singhvi said terming terror as a "Frankenstein monster". However, the action on Lakhvi's challenge to his detention was quick as according to an antiterrorism court judge, the courts take detention cases even in holidays.

Protest against Aamir Khan starer PK in two theaters in Ahmedabad

Akshesh Savaliya Ahmedabad, 30 December, 2014 Unidentified activists today staged protest against Aamir Khan’s film PK in Ahmedabad. Two multiplexes in Ahmedabad including City Gold multiplex witnessed protest against film PK on Ashram road. One of them suffered some damage by agitators. According to DCP zone 1 of Ahmedabad Police, some people have ransacked two multiplexes on Ashram road that are City Gold and Shiv. This has happened in connection with PK movie. Their video footage is available and police is analyzing it to take strong actions against those involved. Early in the morning a group of about two dozen youths arrived at two multiplexes(Shiv and City Gold) and damaged glass of booking office. They also

turned down a poster of Aamir Khan in lobby of multiplex. Within minutes, DCP zone-1 and sector-1 staff reached multiplexes. Police has arranged bandobast at two multiplexes and also increased vigil on other theaters where PK shows are running. The film is facing protest due to what some organization and number of youths on social media claim its “antiHindu” flavor. Hindu organizations believe that for last some time there has been series of films that questions Hindu saints, mandir visits and idol worship, and there is well-managed agenda behind this. Hindu organizations believe that there’s proper finance and agenda involved in this. They also allege that in number of recent Hindi films, Pakistan has been portrayed as good nation. The latest example is film PK where Indian girl falls in love with a nice

Pakistani boy. Who is the mastermind behind series of such movies? Editor's Reviews: - Anushka Just fell in Love with Pakistani guy who is muslim and on other side anushka is hindu. Sushant singh Rajput no doubt played a very gud role but the way pakistani muslim boy is shown is very innocent but in actual it is not as per my opinion and view. It was clear cut cas that it is promoting that there is nothing wrong Hindu girl loving pakistani muslim boy and he is very cute guy and blahh blah. Clear case of ?#?LoveJihad... - If Raju Hirani really want to show the minority difference then he can give caste name as hindu only from shudra or any minority category which comes into hindu. and in the end it shows that pakistani muslim boy is not fraud. it is like cherry on the cake ki the way we see

the Pakistani muslim boy they are not like that they are very honest and all - Amir khan make poster of Bhagwan Lapata hai. cant he make combine for all religion that “Allah” ,”Jesus” and Bhagwan are missing and the photos of all god were stick. what he wants to prove..? - One incident shown about Rs.5000: No temple do like this that they take money forcefully. You shown daan peti and money coming out of it have u dare to show masjid ki kamai the way you are earning from Satyamev jayate and funding to masjid.. There are other various points if i wrote may be they will put me beind bars. These actors and Producers have freedom to show non sense but when people like us support hinduism and tell truth they put us behind bars. Sanjay Dutt the star lol got killed by bomb blast i liked it. “Jaisi Karni waisi bharni”

Search operation to expand on Tuesday, 162 people on board jet ... A warship is on its way this evening to collect an oil sample from the sea to establish whether it has come from missing AirAsia Flight 8501. Dozens of planes and ships have focused their search on two patches of oil spotted in Indonesian waters this afternoon as a senior official warned the aircraft was likely at the 'bottom of the sea'. As the second day's search ended at dusk, National Search and Rescue Agency chief Bambang Soelistyo said an Indonesian corvette (warship) had been sent to test the spills, with an announcement expected tomorrow. It came as officials revealed that one of the

pilots had been denied a request to increase altitude to avoid storm clouds minutes before the jet disappeared. In the last communication with air traffic control six minutes before it vanished off radar, one of the pilots asked permission to turn left and climb from 32,000ft to 38,000ft due to the adverse weather. However, the request could not immediately be granted because another plane was in the airspace at 34,000ft, said

Bambang Tjahjono, director of the stateowned company in charge of air-traffic control. By the time clearance could be given, Flight 8501 had disappeared, he

added. The developments will bring further anguish to relatives of the 162 passengers and crew who are desperately clinging to hope they may find survivors.

India should imbibe Obama's zeal to protect free speech It might not have hit a theatre near you but the Christmas release of Sony pictures’ The Interview is good news for everyone who upholds democratic values and wishes to stand up against cyber bullies. After hackers (believed to be from North Korea) attacked Sony’s servers in November, leaked sensitive documents and threatened movie theatres that screened The Interview — a satire about an assassination attempt on North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco — Sony cancelled its release. United States President Barack Obama criticised the production company’s decision as a “mistake”, following which Sony decided to have a limited release of the movie. Sony, by releasing the movie, and Mr Obama, by voicing his support, have showed that no matter how big the threat is, bullies must not be entertained. Shelving The Interview would have set a wrong precedent. As rightly put by Mr Obama, “imagine if producers and distributors and others start engaging in self-censorship because they don’t want to offend the sensibilities of someone whose sensibilities probably need to be offended”. Unfortunately, we, in India, are not alien to such self-censorships. Be it the release of a book by Wendy Doniger (The Hindus: An Alternative History), or the screening of a war documentary by Callum Macrae (No Fire Zone) or a joint art exhibition by Indian and Pakistani artists in Ahmedabad, the organisers and government have caved in at the slightest hint of protest from fringe groups. Rather than protecting the enshrined right to freedom of expression, the government has often taken the easy — and lazy — option of banning works of art, academia or literature. There is a lesson New Delhi can learn from the ‘Interview’ saga — when the rights of an organisation or a person are threatened, it is the duty of the State to step in and ensure that they are protected. It is not enough if Mr Obama is invited as the chief guest for the Republic Day or more H1B visas are granted to Indian techies in the US. Along with pushing for greater economic ties, New Delhi should also imbibe Washington’s zeal, as seen in this case, to protect free speech. Often India and the US are compared as great democracies, but it is the State’s approach towards these principles that defines the character and depth of a democracy.

Mind that headache, you could have brain tumour

Headache is sometimes the only symptom of brain tumours, a new study has found, suggesting CT scans and other neuroimaging tests for people with headache can prove helpful in diagnosing the deadly disease. Recent guidelines seeking to reduce the use of CT scans and other neuroimaging tests for patients with headaches run the risk of missing or delaying the diagnosis of brain tumours, researchers said. Depending on which set of recent recommendations had been followed, neuroimaging would have been delayed or never performed in three to

seven per cent of patients with brain tumours, researchers said. "Although the intentions are laudable, these guidelines are inconsistent with the neurosurgeon's experience with patients with brain tumour," Dr Ammar H Hawasli and colleagues at Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, said. Reducing the use of neuroimaging for patients with headaches has been one focus of recent initiatives seeking to limit the use of unnecessary and costly medical tests. The issue is an important one, as headaches are a common reason for physician visits.

He especially asked Hindus to join hands and criticize this movie that insults Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Speaking in support of Hindu religion, Baba said, “People think a 100 times while talking against Islam. However, when it comes to Hinduism any one gets up and says anything, this is shameful.” He further expressed his views on what should be done with the people who make such films that denigrate Hindu religion and the deities. He said that people should socially boycott against all who are involved in the creation of such movies, and that some people consider it

their hobby to offend religion and Gods! He said, “There should be a social boycott in society against those who are involved in making such movies. It has become a hobby of some people to denigrate Hindu Gods and Goddesses...and insult our saints.” Talking to the media, the guru censured the movie as being blasphemous, “The movie is blasphemous to Hindu community and it should be boycotted by the viewers.” Moreover a television news channel reported how he was angry about people uttering disrespectful matter against Hindu religion, “These days any random person comes up with objectionable statements against Hindu religion.” He further targeted prominent personalities who insult

religion, and stated that it seems these people have become fond of doing such blasphemy, “It seems like big personalities are fond of insulting Hindu deities.” But this is just one of the numerous people who have stood against ‘PK’. The public has criticized several things shown in the movie. In fact, this is quite the hot topic nowadays on Twitter. The ones who find the movie offensive to religion, have expressed their criticism through #BoycottPK on Twitter. There are several comments insulting the director Rajkumar Hirani, and also the lead actor Aamir Khan. The scene that created the most controversy is the one in which a man dressed as the Hindu God – Lord Shiva, pulls a rickshaw carrying Muslim women in burqua.

Fast food could slow down your kid’s brain London, Dec 29 Eating fast food affects not only your child’s general health but could also slow down his/her brain, a new research suggests. The researchers found that children who eat the most fast food score less in tests for maths, science and reading. ‘Research has been focused on how children’s food consumption contributes to the child obesity epidemic,” lead researcher Kelly Purtell from the Ohio State University in the US was quoted as saying.

‘Our findings provide evidence that eating fast food is linked to another problem: poorer academic outcomes,’ Purtell added. Lack of iron in fast food leads to a slowing in development of certain processes in the brain, the researchers suggested. For the study, the researchers used data from a sample of 8,500 school children from the US, whose fast food consumption was measured at the age of ten. This was then compared against academic test results three years later.

Children were asked how many times they had eaten a meal or snack from a fast-food restaurant, including outlets such as McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Burger King, and KFC. Those who consumed fast food daily scored an average of 79 points in science, four points less than those who never ate fast food. Similar differences in academic achievement were observed for reading and maths, the Daily Mail reported. The study appeared in the journal Clinical Pediatrics.

FM Arun Jaitley rejects RBI Governor GoI invites proposals from states to establish model SMART Police Stations Raghuram Rajan’s criticism of ‘Make in India’ New Delhi also be made to involve Rejecting RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan’s criticism of ‘Make in India’ programme, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said it is about manufacturing of quality products at low costs and it was not relevant whether they are sold in India or abroad. “Whether Make in India is made for consumers within India or outside is not so relevant. The principle today says that consumers across the world likes to purchase products which are cheaper and are of good quality. They hire services which are cheaper and good quality,” Jaitley said here. Earlier this month, Rajan had sounded a word of caution about the new

government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign, saying it assumes an export-led growth path of China and it should rather be ‘Make for India’ with a focus on manufacturing products for the domestic market. Speaking at a “Make in India’ event here this morning, Jaitley said manufacturing sector will continue to face challenges unless it transitions itself while

keeping the quality and price in mind. Rajan had said he was “cautioning against picking a particular sector such as manufacturing for encouragement, simply because it has worked well for China. “India is different, and developing at a different time, and we should be agnostic about what will work.”

FDI in India jumps 25% in AprilOctober FY'14: Nirmala Sitharaman NEW DELHI Inflows of foreign direct investment into India rose by about 25 per cent to USD 17.35 billion in the April-October period of the current fiscal, Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said today. Improvement in the macroeconomic situation and investor sentiment on account of a series of steps taken by the new government helped attract higher FDI, she said. n April-October 2013, the country had received USD 13.82 billion foreign inflows. The minister said

however that there are challenges to boost manufacturing sector. "Still there are number of challenges to make India a global manufacturing hub. (Those challenges) need to be identified and action plan has to be (formulated) to overcome this," Sitharaman said. She was speaking at the inaugural session of the day-long workshop on 'Make in India' "We recognise that manufacturing requires infrastructure ...'Make in India' aims to boost entrepreneurship in India," she added. She also said that the

The Prime Minister of India had introduced the concept of SMART Police (S-Sensitive and Strict; MModern with mobility; AAlert and Accountable; RReliable and Responsive; T- Trained and Technosavvy) during the 49th Directors General/ Inspectors General Annual Conference at Guwahati on Nov. 30, 2014. Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh as a first step towards SMART policing, has decided to establish one model SMART Police Station in each State and has asked the State Governments to submit their proposals with specific location and components by January 31, 2015. MHA has decided to allocate specific funds for setting up of SMART Police Stations in each state shortly. MHA will work with State Governments for setting up more SMART Police Stations during the next financial year. Efforts will

the private sector and their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes to expand the roll out of SMART Police Stations. The SMART Police Station would become the foundation towards SMART policing. A SMART Police Station should be citizen friendly and clean. It should also meet the operational and welfare needs of the police personnel posted there. Some suggested features of a SMART Police Station are: • Basic amenities for visitors, waiting area, toilets, drinking water, Receptionist whom the visitors can meet. • Rest room for constables, including separate room for women constables. • Natural lighting and ventilation, solar lighting, energy saving features. • CCTV, Safe & secure Armoury, Record Room, Communication Room for wireless, computers etc.

Shiv Sena’s transport wing to ensure safety of women on 31st government has taken several steps to cut red tape and rationalise existing rules and increased use of IT to make governance "effective and user friendly". "A strong manufacturing sector has the potential to take our economic growth to a higher trajectory, provide jobs to our youth and fulfil their aspirations," Sitharaman said.

Delhi traffic costs commuters dear as snarls guzzle 40,000 litres of fuel A DAY

Mumbai Shiv Sena has asked cabbies and autorickshaw drivers affiliated to the party to ensure safety of women passengers hiring their services on the eve of New Year. “Over 16,000 rickshaws and 10,000 taxis affiliated to ‘Shiv Vahtuk Sena’ all over Mumbai will be following the ground rules set up for them for the night of December 31. We have told all our drivers that it will be their responsibility to ensure that every woman reaches her home safely after celebrations,” Haji Arafat Shaikh, president of Shiv

Vahtuk Sena, the transport wing of the party, said. Shaikh said the party has asked the drivers to keep a close watch on antisocial elements and alert police immediately. “We have taken it upon ourselves to ensure safety of women as auto and taxi drivers are best poised to keep an eye on mischiefmakers because they roam in every nook and corner of the city,” he said. Shaikh said Vahtuk Sena is keen on dispelling the popular perception about drivers by making them stake-holders in ensuring safety of women passengers.

Colony regularisation move a prepoll gimmick : Arvind Kejriwal

Delhiites are not only breathing poison due to long traffic jams - they are also burning through huge amounts of car fuel. According to findings by one of nation’s top research agencies, Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Delhi’s eight most troublesome traffic bottlenecks are guzzling at least 40,000 kilolitres of fuel daily, while vehicles wait in peak rush hours. Worse, it is adding to the city’s pollution with nearly 115 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) being released daily. The amount of fuel burnt

in vehicles just idling at traffic intersections amounts to 39,806 kg (diesel, petrol and CNG vehicles combined) and the quantity of carbon dioxide produced equals 1,15,609 kg - that is 115 tonnes of the unhealthy black soot. These figures, which have been collected from just eight traffic junctions of Delhi, imply that if an absolute figure was to be derived from all busy crossroads of the Capital then the numbers are bound to be much bigger than this. The finding also says that

the Capital will far exceed India’s other metropolises in terms of fuel wasted through vehicles idling at traffic intersections. Major traffic interasection Ashram Chowk in southeast Delhi was found to be most polluting, wasting 11,038 kg of fuel and producing no less than 31,974 kg of Co2. Peeragarhi in the west came next, burning 8,260 kg of fuel and emitting 24,119 kg of Co2, followed by Badli Crossing in north-west, guzzling 5,617 kg of fuel and producing 16,535 kg of the black soot.

Terming it a "political gimmick", the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday said that the Centre's move to reguralise 895 unauthorised colonies in Delhi, was taken with an eye on the impending Assembly polls. The party said the decision was akin to then Sheila Dixit government's move to give provisional certificates and then forget about such colonies. "With an eye on elections, Cabinet has decided to regularise unauthorised colonies of Delhi "from 1.6.2015". This

is nothing but a pre-poll gimmick, akin to Sheila's provisional certificates. Congress forgot these colonies after elections. People know that U-turn BJP govt will also forget them after elections. People have faith only in AAP becoz AAP does what it says," Kejriwal tweeted. In a decision that will benefit about 60 lakh people in poll-bound Delhi, Union Cabinet approved an Ordinance on Monday to regularise 895 unauthorised colonies which have come up till June 1 this year.

SPORTS ROUND Australia vs India: It's time to tip our cap to 'good' Ishant Sharma It is easy to make fun of Ishant Sharma, as we have done a few times on this site. For all his obvious gifts, Ishant rarely delivers on the field. And he has a habit of saying silly things. But credit must be given where credit is due. It was Ishant, in conjunction with Ashwin, who shackled Australia today after Umesh Yadav had handed David Warner a pair of boosters. Two of Ishant's first three overs were maidens as he hit the good length area at the MCG with the kind of regularity we normally only see Ishant achieving in our daydreams. The pressure he built up led to Shane Watson’s wicket just after lunch. A similar scenario unfolded after tea, where India’s first five overs cost six runs. Sharma’s spell of 31-3-1 reduced Australia to 176 for 5 as Joe Burns couldn’t resist flirting

outside the offstump. Suddenly an Indian victory became a possibility. Australia recovered to end the day on 261 for 7 thanks to Shaun Marsh but this was India’s best day with the ball by some distance and a big reason was Ishant’s discipline and commitment to getting the basics right. He troubled all the batsmen, including Marsh, who was struck a painful blow in the ribs after a short ball jagged back into him. “Ishant bowled superbly,” Sourav Ganguly said. “He has kept it simple. He just

bowled good lengths, good areas. Got the ball to seam in to the lefthanders. We want to see this length more often.” The truth is we have seen this length more often in 2014. Ishant has been India’s best bowler this year and it isn’t even close. Say what you want about the quality of his competition, but Ishant is actually the fifth highest wicket-taker in 2014. His 38 wickets are just one less than Dale Steyn, and he has taken them in one fewer innings (14 innings compared to 15).

ISRO's Chairman Dr. K. Radhakrishnan features in Nature journal's top ten list Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is one of the 2014 top ten scientists chosen by the prestigious journal Nature. It is for the first time that the Nature journal has chosen an Indian working in India. Dr. K. Radhakrishnan is listed along with other people like Andrea Accomazzo, the Rosetta flight operations director, European Space Agency. The reasons for choosing Dr. Radhakrishnan lies all into the successfully launch of Mangalyaan into Mars orbit on September 24, 2014. India is actually the first country to do this in its first attempt and also the first Asian country to reach Mars. The Indian Space Research Organisation got over two other major milestones in year 2014. In January, the space organisation achieved notable success with the spaceflight of an Indian cryogenic engine and

stage. India has been painstakingly working hard for some years to indigenously develop a cryogenic engine to improve the reliability of GSLV rockets and to take the rocket to greater heights. The latest launch of the heaviest and tallest GSLV Mark III and the successful re-entry of the unmanned crew module were the other landmark achievements. The other major events on ISRO's diary is the developmental flight of GSLV Mark III vehicle with a fully operational cryogenic engine in a timeline of two years. The next is the launch of Chandrayaan-2

mission configured with an Orbiter, Lander and Rover for in-situ investigation of the lunar surface in 20162017. ISRO has already developed and tested a lunar Rover. Dr. K. Radhakrishnan had worked in various major capabilities before becoming Chairman. He was in Department of Ocean Development for five years from 2000-2005 and was a Founder Director of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad. It should be noted that, Dr. Radhakrishnan is due to retire on December 31, 2014.
