Don’t want to meet Gauri Lankesh’s fate: Humans of Hindutva quits Facebook

Mumbai: Popular Facebook page ‘Humans of Hindutva’ (HoH) has made its way out from the social media platform by deleting itself on Thursday, following repeated threats to the admin’s family. The admin, who had remained anonymous throughout his 8-month extremely popular stint on Facebook, posted on his blog website satyanash.com that he was “quitting of his own accord,” and had not been forced to do so by mass reporting or any other action taken by Facebook itself. HoH started this year on April, after the admin noticed a sudden increase in the number of Facebook pages that offered “alternative facts,” obviously suited to right-wing explanations.

New Delhi: Billionaire Mukesh Ambani on Friday stepped in to bail out younger brother Anil Ambani’s debt-ridden Reliance Communications by acquiring spectrum, tower, optical fiber network and other wireless assets. While the two companies did not disclose the deal size, banking sources pegged the transaction value at Rs 24,000-25,000 crore. The announcement comes just two days after Reliance Communications - promoted by Anil Ambani - disclosed a new deal with the lenders under which nearly Rs 40,000 crore will be raised through sale of assets.

Arrogance of people in power led to Congress’ defeat in Himachal polls, says Rahul Gandhi Shimla : Even as the ‘copslapping’ incident outside the party office on Friday overshadowed Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s first visit to Shimla after his party’s defeat in the Himachal Assembly elections, he minced no words to convey his displeasure to the state leadership on some of the key factors contributing against the party in the state. In presence of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, and some of the cabinet ministers—who also lost the polls, beside PCC president Sukhwinder Sukhu, Gandhi said, “Arrogance of people in power, and their disconnection with the masses led to the party’s defeat.” The Congress president was not convinced with the explanation of some leaders on the shortcoming of the party’s campaign to match BJP’s resources, and cut them short mid-way their speeches.

Jadhav-kin meet success despite all impediments: Pak slams MEA’s claims Mumbai: Hours after External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her ministry criticised the inhumane treatment given to Kulbhushan Jadhav’s wife and mother, Pakistan on Thursday called the meeting of the former naval officer with his kin in Islamabad on Monday a “success despite all impediments”. “We categorically reject all Indian allegations. It needs to be acknowledged that the purpose of the visit was to have a meeting of Commander Jadhav with his wife and mother, which was

successfully achieved despite all impediments. It was permitted on humanitarian grounds, in line with Islamic teachings and traditions of compassion

and grace,” Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said. Lambasting Pakistan for the treatment offered to Jadhav’s kin in Islamabad, Sushma

said Pakistan had used the emotional reunion of a “mother with her son and a wife with her husband” after 22 months as a propaganda tool. “We condemn such shameful behaviour by Pakistan and will not take it silently. We will expose Pakistan’s utterly disgusting behaviour,” She said. Pakistan’s ministry of foreign affairs responded to it saying, “Indian allegations coming 24 hours after the visit are baseless, counterproductive and regrettable.”

Difficulties in their implementation were

overcome because of Modi’s bold leadership,” Parrikar said, speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here. Parrikar, himself an IIT alumnus, also said politics needs people who can lead. “Leaders with character, intelligence, vision are the need of the hour,” he said, speaking at Leadership Summit at the institute, organised as a part of its ongoing Techfest event.

Groom dumps car and takes Kochi Metro to reach wedding venue on time

Kochi : Last Saturday, Ranjith Kumar, who hails from Palakkad district, was on his way to his wedding in Kochi when he noticed huge traffic snarls on the way. Even though he started at 6 am from Palakkad hoping to reach by 11 am in Kochi, mid-way, he realized that he would not reach for his own wedding on time if he continued by car. By the time Ranjith and his family reached Aluva, frantic phone calls from the bride’s family started coming in, advising them to opt for an alternative route. That’s when Ranjith decided to take the Metro. “At the Aluva station, there was a queue at the ticket counter. But I explained to people that it was my wedding. We bought the tickets and quickly grabbed the next train,” said Ranjith, in a video released by Kochi Metro. Sure enough, as the roads below lay clogged with heavy traffic, Ranjith and his family were able to reach the wedding venue just on time, travelling by the Metro train. “We hurried through the rituals and within five minutes I think, everything was over,” he said in the video. As a token of love, the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) gave away its Kochi1 smart cards to the couple and said, “We weren’t exaggerating when we said Kochi Metro touches lives.”It was in June this year that Kochi became the first non-capital in the country to get its own Metro system. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, trains now run on a 18-km corridor from Aluva to Maharaja’s College through 16 stations. Construction work is going on for the remaining 7-km stretch till Pettah.

The black hole called India-Pakistan relations..?

In my memory, the Pakistan Foreign Office in Islamabad has a bright foyer lit with a grand chandelier, and tea and biscuits were always laid out outside the weekly briefing room. There was the office of the minister upstairs, at that time Khurshid Kasuri, and a warren of other offices. As the first images of Kulbhushan Jadhav’s meeting with his mother Avanti and wife Chetankul came up on Twitter, it was hard to reconcile that memory with this bunker-type space with glass partition upon partition, where the conversation was conducted over intercom, and a clock ticked away ominously. The theatre should not have come as a surprise. There is shock and outrage in India, and even some among well-meaning people in Pakistan, that the meeting took place under circumstances arranged to rob it of any meaning for the three main actors. But right from the time that Pakistan agreed to allow Jadhav to meet his wife, and then added on his mother, it should have been clear that this was going to be milked for what it was worth. Because this is the sad truth about India-Pakistan relations. Individuals and their emotions do not count. They are mere pawns in the high-stakes game that both sides know how to play well. That is why they issue visas at will, and then, at will, stop issuing visas. This is why they arrest each other’s nationals and keep them in jails for years after they finish their sentences, releasing them only to make a political or diplomatic statement at a time of their choosing. This is why there can be cruelty to Sarbajit, and “humanitarianism” for Jadhav. This is why a mother and a wife became the latest pawns in this game on December 25. A question is doing the rounds: Would India have behaved any differently had the boot been on the other foot? It is nice to think that it would have, but there is no guarantee, and those who know better about these things say the treatment might have been the same, perhaps minus the American-style partitions. As for Indian TV channels, it is not difficult to imagine them throwing the same questions. Come to think of it, in lending its voice to the outrage and accusing Pakistan of shortchanging the two women and subjecting them to harassment, New Delhi is also using them to further its agenda against Pakistan. Thus are constituencies of India-Pakistan created. That is the only thing for which people are required in this game — to keep the two locked in permanent hostility. Jadhav’s day out with his family was Pakistan’s chance to offset the lack of credibility on his trial, which was held secretly in a military court — and it was always going to use it. According to a March 2017 report in Pakistan’ews Dawn newspaper, since the courts came into existence in 2015, two months after the attack on the Army school in Peshawar, 274 people were convicted. Of these, 161 had been sentenced to death, 12 had been executed and 113 had been given life terms. These are not open trials, and there is no information on what specific charges are laid against a person until the case is decided and the person convicted.

Esha Gupta to go completely deglam in new role for her next film

The Golden Globes 2018 presenters list includes actresses Penelope Cruz and Gal Gadot and actor Seth Rogen. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which chooses the winners, this week began to announce the names of celebrities set to present the awards. Joining the list are Cruz and Rogen, reports eonline.com. Earlier, HFPA announced that actresses Kerry Washington and Gadot will be presenters. Fantasy drama “The Shape of Water” is leading the nomination list in the film section at the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards with seven mentions. In the television category, “Big Little Lies” received six nominations. Seth Meyers will be hosting the 2018 Golden Globes ceremony, to be held on January 7 next year.

Over the past year, Esha Gupta has made quite a statement with her bold and glamorous looks. Having posed seminude for a racy photoshoot this year, Esha received severe backlash for the same. However, it looks like the New Year is calling for a new look for the stunning actress. She’s now planning to go deglam in a new role for her next. Says Esha, “The films that I have decided to do are content based movies, and not glamorous. I have signed up for two films, and both are content driven, and have me in deglam roles. I have always wanted to do something like that.” She goes on to add that she’s quite pumped about her look. “I have done glamorous parts and people know how I look in modern clothes. Now, I have a very non-glamorous role, and I am so excited about that.”

Noomi Rapace, who gained global recognition for her portrayal of the intriguing literary character Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Millennium Trilogy, plays an evil elf in her latest cinematic outing, Bright. “I have been avoiding doing the pretty, cute and s**y girl roles. In Bright, I’m chasing the boys,” says the 37-year-old, who essays the character of Leilah in the futuristic actionthriller that Netflix started streaming recently. Playing the elf, who is after two Los Angeles-based cops (Will Smith and Joel Edgerton) to get her magic wand back and restore the reign of the Dark Lord, meant she had to rehearse a lot and “find a flow in the fight scenes”. The Swedish actor, who was in Mumbai recently to promote Bright, says: “I was sleeping with knives and playing with them to get used to them.

Australia resumed on 70-2 after lunch but added only 16 runs before the first rain interruption.

David Warner, Steve Smith take The Ashes Australia to 103-2 as rain halts Day 4 SA vs Ind: Fit-again Du Plessis, Steyn named in Proteas squad for Cape Town Test

Cape Town: A fit-again Faf du Plessis will return to lead a full-strength South Africa squad, also comprising lead pacer Dale Steyn, for the first Test against India beginning here on January 5. Du Plessis and Steyn could not be part of the four-day Test against Zimbabwe due to illness. Ab de Villiers, who played his first Test in almost two years, had led South Africa to a comfortable win against Zimbabwe in Du Plessis’ absence. Fast bowling all-rounder Chris Morris too has been added to the 15man squad, joining the likes of Steyn, Morne Morkel, Kagiso Rabada, Vernon Philander and Andile Phehlukwayo in a formidable pace attack. Morris, who has not played for South Africa since suffering a back injury during the tour of England in July, has replaced fast bowler Duanne Olivier in the only change in the 15-man squad that was picked for the Zimbabwe Test.

Melbourne: A morning that brought two wickets for England and a sniff of a drought-breaking Ashes win gave way to a bleak afternoon for the tourists on Friday as rain washed out most of day four on Friday and left Australia well-placed to save the fourth Test. The home side were 102 for two in their second innings at the Melbourne Cricket Ground when rain interrupted play before tea and the showers lingered long enough for

Shikhar Dhawan slams Emirates airlines after family left stranded at Dubai airport Dubai: Shikhar Dhawan’s tour of South Africa started on a bitter note after his wife Aesha and their children weren’t allowed to board a flight from Dubai to South Africa. While other Team India members, led by skipper Virat Kohli, left India for the tour with their families on Thursday, Dhawan came across a big issue upon landing on the African continent. The Indian opener’s family were denied from boarding the flight since they could not produce birth certificates for the children. Left unimpressed, the Delhi batsman hit back at airline service Emirates on Twitter for causing the inconvenience. Senior opener Shikhar Dhawan appears to be a doubtful starter for the first Test against South Africa, starting January 5, due to an ankle injury. Before Indian team’s departure, Dhawan was seen entering the team hotel limping with his left ankle heavily strapped. He was accompanied by physio Patrick Farhart and has undergone an MRI scan.

Govt bringing a new bill on consumer protection: Ram vilas Paswan

New Delhi: Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Friday asked members in Rajya Sabha not to delay the approval of a proposed bill on consumer protection after one of them raised the issue of misleading advertisments. As SP member Naresh Agrawal raised the issue, Paswan said the cabinet has approved a new bill and urged the lawmakers not to refer it to the Standing Committee and delay the approval process, after it is introduced in Parliament. Responding to the issue during the Zero Hour, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu referred to an advertisment through which a company claimed to reduce weight in 28 days. He said after making payment of Rs 1,230 to the company as demanded, more money was sought for delivering the “original” medicine to reduce weight. “You know my mentality. I did not leave the matter there,”

the Chairman said, adding that he asked his staff to raise the matter with the concerned ministry. The minister concerned, he said, acted promptly and an inquiry was carried out. Naidu said it was found that the advertisement originated from the US and added that it should be examined how to check such advertisments. In his response, Paswan said the current consumer protection law is 31 years old and the NDA government has drafted a new bill. The bill was introduced in the

Lok Sabha in 2015 and referred to the Standing Committee. He said the Standing Committee gave “good suggestions” and the Union Cabinet approved the new bill. He urged the MPs not to send the bill again to the Standing Committee so that it could be passed at the earliest. Several other matters were raised during the Zero Hour. Rajani Patil (Congress) raised the issue of the major fire that broke out in a building in Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel in Mumbai last night, in which 14

persons have been killed. Patil said incidents like building collapse or fire are discussed at the time of accident, but later forgotten and sought a long term policy to ensure safety of the people. BJD member Dilip Kumar Tirkey urged the Centre to increase the minimum support price for paddy to Rs 2,930 a quintal. K K Ragesh (CPI-M) raised the issue of farmers suicide in the country. He said farmers all over the country are agitated and demanded waiver of their loans.

A couple of good (England) balls to get the wickets and Smith and the vicecaptain (Warner) went about their work.” Australia regained the Ashes after the third Test in Perth and hold an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series but England had hope of cracking a first win after Alastair Cook’s unbeaten

244 propelled them to a first innings lead of 164. They had resumed their first innings on 491-9 in the morning but were unable to extend their total, with tail-ender James Anderson dismissed first ball by paceman Pat Cummins, fending a catch straight to Cameron Bancroft at short leg. That left former captain Cook unbeaten on his overnight score, a record total among openers who have carried their bat through an innings.

SA vs Ind: Final session of a day will be key to knock India over, says Morne Morkel Cape Town: South Africa pacer Morne Morkel feels that final session of a day will be crucial for his side’s attack to do

the damage on Indian batsmen when the three-match Test series begins on January 5 here. “It’s going to be about that last session in the day when the ball is soft and conditions are tough. Majority of the runs in Test cricket are scored after

tea time. So for us, it’s going to be if we have enough petrol in the tank to knock India over at the back end of the day,” Morkel said about the upcoming series against India. Morkel claimed his first Test five-for in five years against South Africa’s one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Port Elizabeth which the Proteas won inside two days. Despite being the most successful seamer in the match, he is the also the one most at risk of missing out against India when Dale Steyn returns. If South Africa stick to a frontline attack of three seamers and a spinner at Newlands, Morkel may have to watch the match from the sidelines.

New Delhi: With oil prices on the boil, the government will be under pressure to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel to help soften the impact on consumers, credit rating agency Icra said on Friday. Brent prices have jumped 40 per cent to around USD 67 per barrel this month from USD 48 in November 2016 when the OPEC had decided to cut back on crude oil production This would lead to gross underrecoveries on sensitive products climbing to Rs 22,000-25,000 crore in the current fiscal from earlier estimate of Rs

16,000-20,000 crore, Icra said in a statement. Every USD per barrel increase in Indian basket crude price pushes up underrecoveries -- which is the revenue loss arising from selling products below cost, by about Rs 1000 crore and net import bill by USD 1.2 billion. “Further increase in under-recoveries in ensuing years could increase pressure on the Government to increase subsidy allocation for the petroleum products,” said K Ravichandran, Senior Vice President and Group Head - Corporate Sector Ratings, Icra.

Roy Moore files lawsuit to block Alabama Senate result

Montgomery: Failed candidate Roy Moore has doubled down on his claims of voter irregularities in Alabama’s US Senate race in a last-ditch effort to stop the certification of the Democratic opponent who pulled off a historic upset last month in a traditionally deep-red state. Moore asked a judge to issue a restraining order to stop the state’s canvassing board from certifying Doug Jones’ victory. But secretary of state John Merrill said that Moore’s action “is not going to delay certification and Doug Jones ... will be sworn in by Vice President Pence

on the third of January.” A spokesman for Jones called Moore’s action a “desperate attempt ... to subvert the will of the people,” and said it “will not succeed.” “The election is over. It’s time to move on,” Sam Coleman wrote in an email. Jones defeated Moore by about

20,000 votes in the Dec. 12 special election. Moore’s campaign was deeply wounded by accusations of sexual misconduct involving teenage girls decades ago. Moore has denied the accusations and says he has taken and passed a polygraph test to prove they

are false. Moore’s attorney wrote in the wide-ranging complaint that he believed there were irregularities during the election, including that voters may have been brought in from other states. He attached a statement from a poll worker that she had noticed licenses from Georgia and North Carolina as people signed in to vote. The complaint also noted the higher-than-expected turnout in the race, particularly in Jefferson County, and said that Moore’s numbers were lower than straightticket Republican voting in about 20 Jefferson County precincts.

Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said China has been “caught” allowing oil into North Korea and said such moves would prevent “a friendly solution” to the crisis over Pyongyang’s nuclear program “Caught RED HANDED - very disappointed that China

is allowing oil to go into North Korea. There will never be a friendly solution to the North Korea problem if this continues to happen!” Trump wrote in a post on Twitter. China earlier on Thursday said there had been no UN sanction-breaking oil sales by Chinese ships to North

Korea after a South Korean newspaper said Chinese and North Korean vessels had been illicitly linking up at sea to get oil to North Korea. An official of the US State Department said the US government was aware of vessels engaged in such activity involving refined petroleum and coal.
