Never said ‘Hey Ram’ weren’t Bapu’s last words: Gandhi’s PA

Survey makes light work of the Budget

E conomic surveys play the avowed role of preparing the ground for the Budget and comes a day or two ahead of the more important annual document, which has implications for every sector of the economy, establishment and household. But from past experience, curiously, budgets, most of the time, do not exactly reflect what the survey says. This for the simple reason that the Economic Survey (ES) is purely an economic document, prepared by economists and as such free from extraneous considerations, while the budget is largely the work of politicians, who have many compulsions to accommodate and they look at everything from a political perspective. The 2018 ES has painted a rather rosy picture of the economy: a slightly higher growth rate in the year ahead, better efficiencies of tax collections, including a 50 percent increase in the number of tax payers, a likely uptick on the investment front, a more inclusive and transformative agriculture sector. These are all good. But there may be aspects the ES does not reveal adequately, which the budget cannot gloat over. Contrary to some optimistic conclusions drawn by the ES, the budget is likely to include measures which may be more painful and hard to swallow. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will be hard-pressed to choose between populism and prudence when confronted with some hard to crack problems. Despite an election year lying ahead, he will have to go for some tough decisions. Fiscal deficit, for instance, is a thorn in the flesh. Jaitley has also to cast the tax net wider to shore up revenue and has already put the nation on notice on what he plans to do. The twin balance sheet problem, which combines the bad loans in the books of the banks and the debt burden in corporate balance sheets, brooks no delay in resolving and this necessitates painful surgical action. One remarkable aspect of this year’s ES is its symbolism, particularly pandering to the feminine. The cover of the ES in bright pink by itself is demonstrative of a new orientation. The survey puts particular emphasis on issues relating to women, including the problems of the girl child, sex ratio, the womenfolk and even domestic labour. It also speaks about a transformation happening in the rural agricultural scene, where there is a twist in favour of women as men migrate to urban centres in search of better employment opportunities. Chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian may have taken a leaf out of his finance ministers, who often quote couplets and qawalis to sugar-coat their bitter medicines.

However, sources close to the situation now tell THR that Lively’s initial hand surgery did not go as planned and the actress must undergo a second surgery and will need more time to recover. It is currently unclear when filming will recommence. One insider said that just under half the movie has been shot, while another source said it could be five months before the production resumes. The spy thriller, which has a production budget around $50 million, is being produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions, the company behind the James Bond franchise. Global Road (formerly known as IM Global) is financing. The Rhythm Section is an adaptation of the first of Mark Burnell’s Stephanie Patrick novels, which follows a woman (Lively) that seeks to uncover the truth behind a plane crash that killed her family — a flight that she was meant to be on. The Handmaid’s Tale director Reed Morano is helming the feature, which also stars Jude Law. In a Jan. 5 interview with THR, Morano said, “[Lively’s] okay. She’s just recovering. The problem is that normally, that kind of an injury, you would have four to six weeks of rehab and then you would wear a splint. We have to go into stunts, so it’s very complicated.”

Shahid Kapoor: Knew my character was an underdog in ‘Padmaavat’

S

hahid Kapoor believes playing Maha Rawal Ratan Singh was the biggest risk of his career as people did not know much about the character’s journey but he is glad that “the hero” of Padmaavat is rightfully getting his due. The 36-year-old actor said there were many people who questioned him for taking up the role, as Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) and Sultan Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) were already popular.“It was one of the biggest risks of my career to take a role like this where for oneand-a-half years nobody knew what it is... So many people had told me why are you doing this film. I knew my character is an underdog in the film, I’m happy that the hero of the film is getting so much love. Out of the three characters, people know a lot about Padmavati, about Alauddin Khilji, but nobody knows about Rawal Ratan Singh. Now you know his journey was also so spectacular,” Shahid said in a group interview. The actor said he felt “validated” with the praise that the film, which released after delays and controversies, has received. “Everyone is talking about it being the top grosser but it’s a great film. We have come a long way, journey of a year and a half... There was a point we were wondering will it be able to release properly. It’s been a turbulent and emotionally draining journey.

The extent to which that partnership can flourish will depend on whether Ozil opts to stay at Arsenal beyond the end of his current contract which expires at the end of this season. There have been reports suggesting the Germany playmaker could be in line for an Old Trafford reunion with Sanchez and Wenger admitted he is not yet sure what Ozil’s future holds.
