Assam NRC draft: 40 lakh fail to make it to citizenship list Villagers wait outside the National Register of Citizens (NRC) centre to get their documents verified by government officials, at Mayong Village in Morigaon district, in the northeastern state of Assam, India July 8, 2018

New Delhi : India said on Monday it had excluded more than four million people from a draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam who could not produce valid documents, a move that has sparked fears about the future of thousands in the region. Security has been tightened across the state, which borders Bangladesh, as thousands of Bengali-speaking Muslims worry about being sent to detention centres or deported, a Reuters witness said. The tea-rich state of Assam has

long been the centre of social and communal tensions with locals campaigning against illegal immigrants, a fight that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist-led government has championed. In 1983, scores of people were chased down and killed by machete-armed mobs intent on hounding out Muslim

immigrants. The government said the draft was not meant to drive people out and those struck out of the list would have a chance to re-apply. “Based on this draft, there is no question of anyone being taken to detention centres or foreigners’ tribunal,” Sailesh, India’s census commissioner who uses only one name, told rerporters in Guwahati, the state’s main city. Hundreds of thousands of people fled to India from Bangladesh during Bangladesh’s war of independence from Pakistan in

the early 1970s. Most of them settled in Assam, which has a near-270 km (165-mile) border with Bangladesh. More than 30 million people had applied and 4,007,707 had been excluded from the list, Sailesh said. To be recognised as Indian citizens, all residents of Assam had to produce documents proving that they or their families lived in the country before March 24, 1971. Sailesh did not provide

Lok Sabha passes bill awarding death penalty to child rapists

New Delhi : The Criminal Law Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday, clearing the way to award death penalty to convicts of child rapes in the country. “This bill reflects the concern of the nation. It shows the determination of the government towards safety of women and the girl child. We want that the women in the country do not feel insecure,” said Union Minister Kiren Rijiju after the bill sailed through Lok Sabha. The bill was initiated after outrage over the gruesome Kathua rape and murder case in which an eight-year-old nomadic girl was sedated and raped multiple times. The bill seeks to replace the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance promulgated on April 21. The bill received support from all the political parties unanimously, however, there were

certain objections to the government taking the route of an ordinance for the same. The bill stipulates harsh punishment for perpetrators of rape, particularly of girls below 12 years. The death sentence has been provided for rapists of girls under 12 years and the minimum punishment in cases of rape

of women has been increased from the rigorous imprisonment of seven years to 10 years, extendable to life imprisonment. According to the bill, in case of rape of a girl under 16 years, the minimum punishment has been increased from 1 to 20 years, extendable to imprisonment for rest of life which means jail term till the convict’s “natural life” The punishment for gangrape of a girl below 16 years will invariably be imprisonment for the rest of life of the convict. With the implementation of the bill, the deadline for the trial of rape cases will be two months. A six-month time limit for the disposal of appeals in rape cases has also been prescribed in the bill, adding that there will also be no provision for anticipatory bail for a person accused of rape or gangrape of a girl under 16 years.

PNB fraud: India requests Antigua and Barbuda govt to detain Mehul Choksi

New Delhi : The Indian High Commission in Antigua and Barbuda had asked the authorities there to stop billionaire diamond trader Mehul Choksi from travelling around the world, sources said on Monday. “As soon as the MEA [Ministry of External Affairs] received information of the likely presence of Mehul Choksi in Antigua, our High Commission in Georgetown had alerted the A&B [Antigua and Barbuda] government, in writing and verbally, to confirm his

presence in their territory and detain him and prevent his movement by land, air or sea,” said the sources. India will hold talks with Antigua and Barbuda about Choksi’s

future on Monday as the MEA and other government agencies continue coordinated actions regarding the case, the sources said. The government of the island nation had

indicated that it will try to “honour” India’s request to send back Choksi even though there is no bilateral extradition treaty between both countries. “We continue to liaise with relevant Government of India agencies and the Government of Antigua & Barbuda to follow up on this matter,” said the sources. Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are wanted in the billion dollar bank fraud involving several public sector banks. Choksi was granted an Antiguan passport in the winter of 2017.

a breakup of people who had failed to make to the draft list. Critics see the citizenship test as another measure supported by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed at minority Muslims. The BJP denies any bias but says it opposes a policy of appeasement of any community. Authorities in the state have previously said the citizenship test was crucial to protect ethnic Assamese, many of whom have demanded removal of outsiders they accuse of taking jobs and cornering resources in the state of 33 million. The first draft of the NRC,

released on December 31, confirmed the citizenship of 19 million people, leading to jubilation for some and heartbreak among others. The NRC, however, told the Supreme Court this month that 150,000 people from the first list, a third of them married women, would be dropped from the next one, mainly because they provided false information or gave inadmissible documents. “If the government has decided to brand us foreigners what can we do?” said Abdul Suban, 60, a Bengali-speaking Muslim, earlier.

All-Dalit, allwomen football club of Bihar shatters stereotypes Patna: At a time when the age-old caste system is manifesting itself in its most horrific form, these girls are challenging the gender and social stereotypes in their own way. With indisputable devotion, out-of-the-ordinary skills and stars in their eyes, the all-Dalit, allwomen football club in Patna has more than a point to prove. Each of the 40 members of the team of the Ambedkar Mahila Football Club has a different story to narrate. While Naaz, Musharrat and Neha are blessed with supportive parents, some share that they have to cook for the family before hitting the field for practice at 8 am every morning. Persuading their parents to allow them to wear half-pants to practice sessions is a daily struggle for many. With stories of hardships, conviction and contradictions, these girls, aged 12-

22 years, are preparing themselves tirelessly for the Patna Football League, due at the year-end, under the watchful eyes of their coach Akbar Ansari. “My girls are strong and determined. I have coached male players as well. I see no difference in coaching the girls. I make sure that they get the same physical training as the males,” says Ansari, adding that, “I am confident that at least six-seven of them will make it to the district team.” However, what concerns him is the lack of adequate diet for these girls in their homes. They come from households where even two square meals a day is a luxury. With multiple siblings and single earning members, most of the girls are not able to afford the kind of diet required. These little girls from ten backward villages in the Patna district are already stars for their ‘Football Wali Didi’. Pushpa, a mentor, a guide and a friend for these 40 girls proudly claims that they are her identity.

Bus accident in Raigad: Narrow roads near tourist hotspots see heavy traffic, but lack protective railings

Raigad : WITH the bus accident on Saturday, the issue of lack of protective railings along narrow roads in the ghats of Satara, Raigad and other hilly districts like Ambenali Ghat and Pasrani Ghat has come to the fore once again. Local residents said Saturday’s accident could have been averted if the stretch had proper fencing. Considering the number of vehicles on the route, because of

hill towns of Mahabaleshwar, Wai and Panchgani that attract a huge number of tourists, the demand that the administration pays more attention to safety has been raised time and again. According to the local residents, several accidents have taken place in the area in the past few years. In 2003, a tourist bus had fallen into a gorge in Pasrani Ghat near Wai killing 33 tourists from Gujarat. Last

year, three members of a family had died on the MahabaleshwarPoladpur Road after their car fell into the gorge. The situation is better in Satara district compared

to the ghat sections of Raigad. “Half of Ambenali Ghat is in Satara district and the other half is under Raigad jurisdiction. The 16odd kilometre of road in the ghat area has some kind of fencing, on and off. But on the stretch that is in Raigad, there is hardly any fencing,” said Akshay Pradeshi, a resident of Wada Kunbharoshi, a village along the road, 3 km away from Saturday’s accident spot in

Raigad district. Anand Utekar, a resident of Pratapgad area, said: “The administration wakes up only after a mishap. But only for a few days till media attention is there. The 4 km stretch that leads up to Pratapgad Fort (in Satara), was recently redone but the fencing is nowhere to be found. It is a Rs 4.5 crore project. They should have built fencing as part of the project itself.”

Rahul’s narrative is distinct but may not affect electoral choices Ever since the Gujarat elections, Rahul Gandhi has come across as more aggressive, more focused, more articulate and more confident. This may have to do with the fact that the polls at the end of last year coincided with his formal takeover as the party president. No one had any doubts that Gandhi would be the next party leader -- he was a key decision-maker even before becoming president -- but formal transitions are important because they establish a clear chain of command and enable a leader to institutionalise changes. In Gujarat, the Congress put up a creditable performance. The Karnataka election outcome would have disappointed the party but post-poll dynamics reflected Gandhi’s ability to take quick decisions, and his offer to the Janata Dal (Secular) to lead a coalition surprised the Bharatiya Janata Party. Over the past monthand-a-half, Gandhi has intensified his public messaging and personal outreach, particularly in Delhi, which wields influence far beyond its size. His parliamentary speech had drawn mixed responses. Some found it over-the-top; others saw it as his ability to understand the power of imagery and capture attention with sharp aggression. His narrative of love and forgiveness, and combating hatred, is distinct. Gandhi has also met Muslim intellectuals, women journalists and his own party spokespersons who engage in the public sphere to push and construct a narrative against the Narendra Modi government in election year. All of this has added greater intensity to the political competition underway. But he has a long way to go before this translates into electoral capabilities and strength. He and his team would do well to keep the following in mind. One, elections will eventually be fought on the ground, in the booths. Even as Gandhi has been aggressive in Delhi, in precisely the same period, BJP chief Amit Shah has completed electoral preparations in all 29 states by holding organisational meetings. The Congress, which is organisationally far weaker, needs to strengthen its game on the ground. Two, while Gandhi has successfully punctured the inaccurate and mischievous interpretation of him as a ‘Pappu’, the battle to project himself as a mature leader ready to take on the Prime Ministerial mantle remains. The lack of administrative record here is a handicap. The BJP’s line of attack will focus on this inexperience and allegations of ‘immaturity’. And finally, Gandhi needs a stronger and more coherent and constructive political message. Emphasis on fighting rivals without hating them is ethically sound but will not affect electoral choices, for it does not speak to the everyday concerns of millions of voters. Getting organisation, personal perception and message right remain his three big challenges.

Raghava Lawrence breaks his silence on Sri Reddy’s allegations Mumbai : Choreographer-actor-filmmaker Raghava Lawrence has finally broken his silence on the casting couch allegations levelled against him by Telugu actor Sri Reddy. While rubbishing the charges, he questioned why she kept quiet on the matter for so long. “Sri Reddy has told that she met me during the making of Telugu film rebel movie it’s already been 7 years since I did rebel movie then why didn’t she report this 7 years back itself? (sic),” Raghava asked in the press statement he released on Monday. “…she told that she came to my hotel room and I misused her. She also stated that she saw god’s photos and Rudraksha mala in my room. .. I am not a fool to keep Rudraksha mala at hotels and do Pooja,” he said. I saw all your interviews I only feel pity on you (sic),” he wrote. Raghava Lawrence even made an offer to Sri Reddy to publicly demonstrate her skills as an actor. Bigg Boss Malayalam Shwetha Menon gets evicted, Anjali Ameer enters the show

Akshay Kumar: Frivolous to compare Gold with Chak De! India

Expresso Season 2, Episode 9: It’s exciting to know that you are loved so much, says Mithila Palkar Bengaluru : The 36th episode of Bigg Boss Malayalam was full of twists and surprises. On Sunday’s episode, two very popular contestants of the show, Ranjini Haridas and Shwetha Menon were in the danger zone. Without much ado, host Mohanlal cut straight to the chase. He asked the two nominees to share their opinions as to why they were nominated by the housemates for elimination. While Ranjini felt that others saw her as a strong contender, Shwetha claimed that the misunderstanding about her among the housemates was the primary reason for her predicament. And then, Mohanlal said something Mumbai : Mithila Palkar’s story is stuff that viral dreams are made of. Among the early voyagers in the vast YouTube’s entertainment universe, the 25-year-old found fame in the most unexpected way. She recorded a Marathi version of the Cup Song (by Anna Kendrick) and posted the video on YouTube. As luck would have it, the post went viral and voila, a YouTube star was born. “Interestingly, one summer I was visiting my sister in USA and I learned how to play the rhythm of The Cup song which is from the movie Pitch Perfect where Anna Kendrick plays this song. I thought it

was intriguing and I learnt that it was on four beats, so I sang Can’t Take My Eyes Off You in English and put it up on YouTube. Then, I started working more as Katti Batti happened and people started looking me up I guess. One day someone found that video of me and commented saying ‘Do something in Marathi’. One afternoon when I had nothing in particular to do, I thought this was an interesting idea. I called my friend who held the camera for me as I recorded The Cup song in Marathi and posted it. The song went viral,” she recalls. Of course, Palkar’s career has come a long way ever since.

unexpected. He asked both Ranjini and Shwetha to leave the house, but not before giving each of the outgoing contestants a chance to express their views about remaining contestants on the show. Ranjini reacted to Mohanlal’s announcement ecstatically. Terming it as “epic”, she took a potshot at the housemates for sending out all the good contestants so that the worst one can win the show. While it appeared like a double elimination, there was more to it than meets the eye. Shwetha and Ranjini were given an emotional goodbye by some housemates and later they were sent to the activity area.

Akshay Kumar, whose next Gold is based on true events about India winning its first Olympic gold medal in hockey as a free nation, believes it is “frivolous” to compare the film with Chak De! India. Led by Shah Rukh Khan, the 2007 sports film was a fictional story about the Indian women’s national field-hockey team, which was inspired by the squad’s win at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. “Everything will be a competition. For me, it is all about doing a good film. Chak De… was a different story,

Karishma Sharma on getting stereotyped: Can’t help it, I was born hot Mumbai : ALTBalaji launched its latest web show Hum on Monday. Starring Kushal Tandon, Karishma Sharma and Ridhima Pandit, the series will present the story of three sisters and their roller coaster journey in Mumbai. Karishma plays the glamourous Isha, who is strong headed and confident about what she wants from life. “The sisters come from a small town. But Isha is very different and has her own set of dreams. The show will talk about the saying that ‘be careful about what you wish for’. Isha’s wishes soon puts not just her but also the lives of others around her in a complex situation,” shared Karishma in an exclusive chat with indianexpress.com. The actor, who also played the lead in Ragini MMS Returns, is known for her bold avatar. When asked if she is getting stereotyped, Karishma said, “What does bold mean? I am playing roles and each has its own characteristics. They are not just bold but also have a lot of emotions. It’s a full-fledged role with various shades. Bold also means a strong headed

confident girl. As for being glamorous, honestly, I can’t help it. I was born hot and there’s nothing I can do about it (laughs).” Talking about her Hum co-star Ridhima, Karishma shared, “We got along like a house on fire. Although we are completely different personalities, we really bonded well. Our makeup vans were just separated by a door and we would always hang around together. She likes bhajans and I am more into western music, so we would actually have a fusion session during break.”

Gold is different. It is frivolous to even think like that or competing with that film. Don’t compare it, it is all different,” Akshay said in an interview. Gold, directed by Reema Kagti, traces the journey of Tapan Das (played by Akshay) an assistant manager, who dreams to get a gold medal for the then newly-independent India. The actor said he was initially unaware about the story of Gold but was bowled over when Kagti narrated the film. “Reema is a tough master, she handled the sports thing very well.

FIFPro complains of insufficient break for World Cup players

Women’s Hockey World Cup 2018: Confident India face Italy in knockout game

India vs England: Indian pace battery has unusual variety and depth, says Alastair Cook

Zurich : Global footballers’ union FIFPro says that at least 15 World Cup players have taken part in UEFA club competitions less than four weeks after returning from Russia, leaving without a sufficient close season break. The union reiterated its call for a mandatory rest period of at least four weeks between the final game of one season and the start of pre-season training for the next. “Players are coming under too much

pressure, caught between the needs of their clubs and their own personal well-being,” said the union in a statement. “While FIFPro understands the financial implications of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League for clubs, the health of these players is being put at risk because of such a congested match schedule.” The group stage of the World Cup in Russia, which was officially part of

last season, finished on June 28 while the final was played on July 15. The first round of qualifying for this season’s Champions League began on July 10, meaning that the two seasons in effect overlapped by a few days. Iceland’s Arnor Traustason played — and scored — for Swedish champions Malmo in a 3-0 win away to Kosovar side Drita in a Champions League qualifier on July 10.

New Delhi : Former England skipper Alastair Cook feels India’s pace battery has variety and depth, something that they have lacked as a touring side all these years. “India seem to have got a good variety of bowlers, especially pace bowlers, which is probably unusual. They have strength in depth in their pace bowling,” said cook ahead of the first Test beginning here on Wednesday. “Over the last

couple of years – certainly in the last 10 years I’ve played them – they haven’t had the option of playing five or six different types of seamers. That’s different to what I have experienced in the past but we’ll see over the next six weeks.” The form of the India’s top order seems to be a cause of concern for the visitors but Cook today backed struggling Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara to come good in the series.

London : Bolstered by the campaign-saving draw against a mighty USA, the Indian women’s hockey team will fancy its chances against lower-ranked Italy in the cross-over World Cup match, in London on Tuesday. Ranked 10th, India will start as overwhelming favourites against 17th ranked Italy in the crucial knock-out match, where a win will

pit them against Ireland in the quarterfinals on Thursday. While India had to fight their way into the knockout round from Pool B after registering two draws against England and USA and a loss to Ireland, Italy easily scrapped past China (3-0) and Korea (10) before slumping to a heavy 1-12 loss to Netherlands in their last match to finish second

in Pool A. But going into Tuesday’s game the momentum surely would be on India’s side and it would also be difficult for Italy to bounce back from the morale-shattering loss against the Dutch. Under pressure, the Indians, on the other hand, produced a spirited performance against USA to come out of a difficult situation and salvage their World Cup campaign.

Tennis Rankings: Karman Kaur Thandi breaks into top-200 NEW DELHI: Karman Kaur Thandi became only the sixth Indian woman tennis player to crack the top-200 rankings in singles, jumping 32 places in the WTA chart. Karman is now ranked exactly 200 in the WTA list. The 20-year-old Delhi girl, backed by Mahesh Bhupathi, has been in good form in the past few weeks, winning her maiden ITF singles title in Hong Kong and making the semi-finals in two others in China. In April, the country’s top singles player Ankita Raina had broken into the top-200 and is now ranked

195 (-4). Before these two girls, Sania Mirza, Nirupama Vaidyanathan, Shikha Uberoi and Sunitha Rao had made it to the top-200. While Sania, winner of six Grand Slam titles in doubles, touched a career-high of 27 in singles in 2007, Nirupama’s best rank was 134 in 1997. Shikha’s highest ranking was 122 and Sunita reached 144. Both these players were US citizens even though they represented India on tour. “I am happy to climb to top-200. Step by step, I will try to reach my goal of getting into top150 by the year-end,” Karman, who

celebrated the moment by indulging in some shopping, told said. In her last three tournaments, Karman won her maiden ITF singles title in Hong Kong and reached semi-final in two others in China. Asked if she played differently to get consistency, Karman said:”The matches I played before were tight ones and they could have gone either way. I lost those matches but learnt from them.” “In the matches, I played recently, I kept my intensity on every point and stepping it up both mentally and and game wise. I stayed

solid with my game both physically and mentally.” Karman has been training in Delhi for the past one year with Aditya Sachdeva having worked at Mouratoglou Academy in Nice, France under renowned Patrick Mouratoglou. Karman said she benefitted a lot while training in Nice where she use to hit with top French player Alize Cornet. “I got to know my body better there and I picked up a lot of things, both fitness and game. Adi sir knows my game inside out so he can also fix whatever wrong is there.

Virat Kohli can become number one in Tests Saina Nehwal looks stunning on magazine cover with strong performance against England New Delhi : India captain Virat Kohli will look to snatch the coveted number-one position from Australia’s Steve Smith in the ICC Test Player Rankings during the five-Test series which is beginning with the first Test in Birmingham on Wednesday. Kohli trails Smith, who is currently serving 12 months ban due to his role in ball tampering, by 26 points and will have to produce a string of strong performances to leapfrog the Australian. Amongst the batsmen, both England and India have five each inside the top-

50. India’s Cheteshwar Pujara is sixth, followed by Lokesh Rahul 18th, Ajinkya Rahane 19th, Murali Vijay 23rd and Shikhar Dhawan 24th, while England’s Joe Root is ranked third (48 points behind Kohli), Alistair Cook 13th, Jonny Bairstow 16th, Ben Stokes 28th and

Moeen Ali 43rd. Among the bowlers, England fast bowler James Anderson will aim to defend his number-one ranking. Apart from Anderson, Stuart Broad is the other England bowler who features inside the top30 in 12th position. In contrast, India boasts six bowlers inside the

top-30, including two spinners in Ravindra Jadeja (third) and Ravichandran Ashwin (fifth), and four fast bowlers, namely Mohammed Shami (17th), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (25th), Ishant Sharma (26th) and Umesh Yadav (28th). India’s left-arm spinner Kuldep Yadav, who caused problems for the England batsmen in the ODI series, is ranked outside the top-50 in 56th position. In ICC Test Team Rankings, England are placed in the fifth place and will look to improving

their current ranking. If England makes a 5-0 sweep, then they will jump to second on the table with a 10-point rise to 107 points, reducing the pre-series gap with top-ranked India from 28 points to just five points. In contrast, if India can display their strength and prowess which has made them the highestranked side in the world, then they will further strength their grip on the top spot. If India wins 5-0, then they will rise to 129 points and England will drop to sixth place on 94 points.

New Delhi : Saina Nehwal on Monday posted an image of the Vogue India cover featuring her. Saina is set to play her first match at the 2018 BWF World Championship on Tuesday. The former world no.1 is tenth seed in the women’s singles draw in Nanjing. Along with the cover itself, Saina posted another pic

from the shoot. Before this, Saina had appeared in the cover of the magazine Femina. In that instance, she was joined by double-trap shooter Shreyasi Singh, paddler Manika Batra, pistol shooter Heena Sidhu and legendary boxer Mary Kom, all of whom were set to represent India in the 2018 Gold Coast

Commonwealth Games. Indian badminton has seen a steady rise in recent years due to the emergence of a generation of players who have won a host of titles around the world. Saina is seen as the one who started this wave. In 2015, she became the first female player from India, and the second overall after Prakash Padukone, to have reached world no.1 in the BWF rankings. She is the only Indian to have won at least one medal in every major BWF junior event which includes the World Junior Championship, the World Championship.

Delhi government yet to honour Commonwealth Games star Manika Batra with cash reward

Manika Batra stands to get Rs 1.7 crore for her four medals (Rs 50 lakh each for gold, Rs 40 for silver and Rs 30 lakh for bronze)

New Delhi : Table tennis star Manika Batra, arguably India’s best athlete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, is yet to receive the cash reward promised by the Delhi government, more than three months after her historic effort in Gold Coast. The Delhi-based Manika had won a unprecedented four medals at the Games including two gold medals (team and singles), a silver (doubles) and bronze (mixed doubles. As per the existing policy of the Delhi government, a CWG gold medallist gets Rs 14 lakh for gold, Rs 10 lakh for silver and Rs 6 lakh for bronze. Since the amount of the cash prize was a lot lesser than what the athletes from Haryana and Tamil Nadu get, a revised proposal had gone to the Delhi government

for approval. A gold medal winner from Haryana receives Rs 1.5 crore and Tamil Nadu government gives Rs 50 lakh for the yellow metal. Dharemender Singh, Deputy Director of Education (Sports) in the Delhi government, confirmed that Manika’s file has been sent to the cabinet for approval. “The file of the specific case you are referring to has gone to the cabinet for approval,” Singh told Said. Sources close to the player revealed that under the revised reward, Manika stands to get Rs 1.7 crore for her four medals (Rs 50 lakh each for gold, Rs 40 for silver and Rs 30 lakh for bronze). At the felicitation ceremony organised by the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) last night, Manika said she is confident of getting her

due soon from the Delhi government. “I don’t know why it has not happened so far but I know it will happen,” said Manika, who is now preparing for the next month’s Asian Games in Indonesia. The central government had promptly felicitated the medal winners 15 days after the Games, held from April 3-15. TTFI secretary M P Singh expressed disappointment at Manika not being given her due. “I wish it had happened earlier. Most state governments have already felicitated their medal winning athletes. They are the pride of the entire nation,” M P Singh said. In fact, Manika had met Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia in May and they both promised her “full support”.

Gujarat: Tribal man lynched on suspicion of being a thief

Ahmedabad : Sixteen properties of a trust run by jailed self-styled godman Asaram now face the risk of demolition after the Gujarat Revenue Department ruled they were constructed without converting the land for “non-agriculture (NA)” use. Following the Revenue department’s order, issued earlier this month, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Monday revoked a conditional consent given to the trust to regularise these properties by paying

“impact fee” to the civic body and will soon decide on their demolition. The AMC officials said it would soon take a decision on the fate of 12 residential and four commercial establishments constructed by Asaram’s trust near his ashram in Motera here. “Many years ago, the Ahmedabad collectorate had issued a demolition notice to the trust after it was found that the 16 properties were constructed 35 years back without having

NA clearance. The trust had then filed an appeal before the Revenue department against the notice,” said R M Jadav, deputy estate officer of the AMC’s west zone, “Simultaneously, the trust approached the AMC to regularise these constructions by paying the impact fee. At that time, we had given conditional consent saying that the AMC’s final decision would depend on the Revenue department’s order,” he explained.

Go and face trial: SC junks Dayanidhi’s plea in telephone exchange case in 2 mins

New Delhi: Former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran’s appeal against his trial in the illegal telephone exchange case lasted only two minutes in the Supreme Court on Monday. With a sharp retort from a Bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Maran’s lawyer had no chance in convincing the Court for a favourable order. The court said: “The High Court had interfered because you were the telecom minister at the relevant time. You got a PLI line installed at your house. You had 30 baby telephone lines from this PLI line. In turn, these 30 lines had 300 different telephone

lines. And these were used for the business of your brother (Kalanithi) who ran a TV channel.” Justice Gogoi added: “Go and face the trial”. Last week, the Madras High Court had set aside a lower court order discharging all the accused, including the Maran brothers, in the Illegal Telephone Exchange case. The CBI has alleged that an illegal private telephone exchange was set up at the residence of Dayanidhi Maran in Chennai during 2004-06 when he was the telecom minister and it was used for the business transactions involving the Sun Network owned by Kalanithi.
