PM’s decision to demonetise cash in circulation was a move to help crony capitalists convert their black money into white.

Note ban wasn’t mistake, but done to destroy poor: Rahul slams PM Modi Jaitley hits back at Rahul: Rafale deal under BJP 20 pc cheaper than UPA’s

New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that demonetisation announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, 2016 was not a mistake but an attack on citizens to help big businesses. “Notebandi is nothing less than a huge scam,” the Congress president ripped into PM Modi and his government at the Centre at a press conference a day after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in its annual report that over 99 per cent of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes banned by the Prime Minister in 2016 demonetisation have returned to the banking system. “The intention of demonetisation was to help the crony capitalists change their black money to white. This was done by destroying SMEs in a bid to help the big corporates. Demonetisation wasn’t a mistake. It was done intentionally to destroy the poor,” Rahul Gandhi said. “The RBI annual report proves that all his objectives failed. I want to state the real reason of demonetisation to everyone. PM Modi’s 10-15 capitalist friends were defaulters. He helped them to turn their black money into white,” the Congress president added. Intensifying his attack on PM Modi and his government, Rahul Gandhi said: “This (demonetisation) can’t be called a jumla, but it’s a scam.

New Delhi: As the war of words over the Rafale deal escalated, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said that the fully weaponised fighter jets which his government is buying are 20 per cent cheaper than the ones offered under the previous UPA regime. Minutes after Congress President Rahul Gandhi launched a noholds-barred attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly helping only “1520 crony capitalist friends”, Jaitley took to the Twitter to say any diversionary tactic will not wipe out the falsehood of the opposition leader. “@ RahulGandhi has not read my question - The fully weaponised Rafale aircraft’s 2016 price is 20 per cent cheaper than the 2007 offer. This is what the 2015 statement of the PM and the French President refers to as ‘on terms better than the 2007 offers’,” he wrote.

The statement comes a day after the Supreme Court directed that the five activists be kept under house arrest.

Arundhati Roy, others seek action against cops for ‘vicious attack’ on activists New Delhi: Leading intellectuals and civil society members on Thursday demanded action against Maharashtra police for launching a “vicious and malafide attack” against human rights activists and called for an immediate end to “such political acts of vendetta”. The arrests of the five activists, in a nationwide crackdown on Tuesday, highlights the violation of all due procedures and is a mockery of the legal system, said a joint statement signed by author Arundhati Roy, lawyer Prashant Bhushan, as well as activists Aruna Roy and Jignesh Mevani, among others. The statement comes a day after the Supreme Court directed that the five activists

be kept under house arrest. They have also demanded that police return the laptops and mobiles seized during the “illegal arrest” of the activists. “They want to divert attention from real issue and discredit the dalit movement. The socalled Maoist plot to kill the Prime Minister is an effort to garner sympathy. Dalits will hold protest rallies at various places on September 5 against the government,” Mevani said at a press conference.

Stigma of caste never disappears from forehead of SC/STs: Centre tells top court New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved verdict on a batch of petitions relating to the issue whether quota should be provided for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes in government jobs, even as the Centre asserted that the stigma of caste printed on the forehead of an SC/ST never disappears. A constitution bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Kurian Joseph, Rohinton Nariman, S K Kaul and Indu Malhotra reserved the order with Attorney General K K Venugopal maintaining that there was no need for testing the backwardness of SC/ST employees

while granting promotion. He said the discrimination still exists though the position of SC/ST has improved to some extent in the last 70 years. The bench was hearing a batch of petitions seeking reconsideration of the ‘2006 Nagaraj judgment’ against such quota. In October 2006, a fivejudge constitution bench in the case of Nagaraj vs Union of India has

concluded the issue by holding that the State is not bound to make a reservation for SC/ST in the matter of promotions. However, if they wish to exercise their discretion and make such provision, the State has to collect quantifiable data showing backwardness of the class and inadequacy of representation of that class in public employment. There must be compelling reasons, namely, backwardness and inadequacy of representation, which enables the States to provide for reservation keeping in mind the overall efficiency of the State administration.

The big messages from the new national accounts series

The Sudipto Mundle Committee’s estimates of the national accounts (base 2011-12) going back to 1993-94 are welcome because they enable us to make comparisons of growth during the life of different governments using a consistent time series. The Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation has stated that the report has been released for comments and could undergo some changes. On the assumption that changes, if any, are going to be minor, I thought I would use this article to extract the big messages that emerge from the new series. The average growth rate achieved during different governments is summarized in the table. Since I want to focus on production and income generation, I will discuss the growth rates from the series on gross value added (GVA which is the old factor cost). The growth rates from the gross domestic product (GDP) at market prices series are also reported for those interested. The Atal Bihari Vajpayee government gave us an average annual growth rate of about 5.83%. Manmohan Singh’s United Progressive Alliance (UPA) I delivered a stupendous average of 8.86%, which fell to 7.39% in UPA II. The 10-year average for UPA I and 2 is 8.2%. The average for the first four years of the Narendra Modi government is 7.22%, which is lower than UPA II. Growth projections for the current year vary from 7.3% to 7.5%. However, even if we get 7.5% growth, the five-year average of the Modi government will still be only 7.3%. To equal the UPA II performance, growth in the current year would have to rise to 8.1%. This does not seem likely. The government can claim that 7.3% is not bad, given how the rest of the world is faring. However, it is well below the acche din that were promised. The Economic Survey of 2014-15 had said that the economy was now well-placed to go back to 8-10% growth. Subsequently, government spokespersons lowered the bar to “8 plus percent”, but we are not there yet. Since employment expectations are linked to GDP growth performance, the reduced growth prospects raise legitimate questions about employment prospects. The growth rate of almost 8.9% achieved in UPA I (8.4% under the old series) was truly spectacular. It included a three-year run of 9.8% in 2005-06, 10.1% in 2006-07, and 9.8% in 2007-08. The UPA’s national common minimum programme published in 2004 had called for a range of 7-8% growth. Since the economy exceeded this target in the early years of UPA I, the 11th Plan GDP growth target was fixed at 9%. The new series shows that the growth achieved in the Plan period (2007-08 to 2011-12) was 8.5%.

los angles: Lady Gaga never ceases to surprise us with her quirky ways, but the pop star has truly outdone herself this time. Mother Monster shared a wild new set of photos with her 30 million Instagram followers, and they will send your jaw straight to the floor. Gaga is nearly completely nude in the images! In the first photo, the pop star is seen bent over as she puts a pair of nylons on, with nothing else covering her body. The Million Reasons singer has tattoos on full display, and

her entire slender frame is visible, aside from her breasts being blurred out! The images, taken by Eli Russell Linnetz, are a new level of risqué. Despite Gaga being covered by pasties and sheer white nylons in the second photo, the image still doesn’t leave much to the imagination! The artistic photos are more edgy than glamorous. She rocks heavy black make-up around her eyes, looking every bit the rockstar she is. Eli is the same photographer who shot an earlier set of photos of Gaga’s Instagram!.

It requires courage to return with a film like Manmarziyaan: Taapsee on Abhishek Bachchan

Mumbai : After a brief sabbatical from films, Abhishek Bachchan is returning with Manmarziyaan and his co-star Taapsee Pannu calls the actor’s decision to take a break extremely “brave and courageous.” Post his 2016 release Housefull 3, Abhishek took time off from cinema as he went on analysing his career and where it was headed. His decision to hold off for a while may show that the instability in the industry puts everyone on the

same level — be it a star kid or an outsider — but Taapsee says for her it only reflects one thing: strength. “Abhishek will sometimes be sure, sometimes unsure of things but you need strength to survive all the ups and downs. Then to take a break to sort things out and return with a film like Manmarziyaan. It is not a conventional heroic film for him to do. It is very brave and he is strong as a person to do that. It requires courage,” Taapsee said.

Wouldn’t have paid such a high fee for Cristiano Ronaldo, says former Juventus boss

Olympic Council of Asia hopes to see Kuwait back in Olympic fold for 2020

Cairo : Former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi on Wednesday told reporters that he would not have signed former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo if he was still in charge of the Italian Club. The Serie A Champions signed Ronaldo in a €100 million deal in the summer transfer window this year, breaking the club’s transfer record. Speaking to Italian newspaper Il Corriere dello, Moggi insisted the price paid for the Portuguese forward was way too much. “In terms of marketing, it’s a sensational deal. But I would never have spent such a high fee on a 33-year-old — and I would certainly not have announced it before selling Higuain, someone who scores 20 goals a season,” he said. Moggi, who served as the Juventus manager

between 1994 and 2006 further talked about how he managed to almost sign Ronaldo in 2003 before the deal fell through because striker Marcelo Salas denied a move to Sporting Lisbon and Juventus failed to pay a higher sum. “I actually signed Cristiano Ronaldo. He was 18 and he played for Sporting Lisbon. I saw him and the next morning I signed the contract for 5 billion lire (£2.3m) plus our Salas, who would have received a 1b lire (£470,000) loyalty bonus. But then Salas preferred River Plate and Manchester United came in for Ronaldo,” he said. “At the time, Juve were in a real crisis. We didn’t have a penny,” he added. Ronaldo had a tough start to his time in Italy as he has failed to find the back of the net even once in the first two league matches.

Kuwait : Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Director General Husain AlMusallam has told Reuters he hopes his native Kuwait will implement a roadmap proposed by the International Olympic Committee that will see it return to the Olympic fold ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Games. Kuwait’s national Olympic committee has been banned since 2015 after the government was accused of interference with a new sports law. As a result, Kuwaiti athletes had to compete under the Olympic flag at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and they have

had no access to IOC funds. Earlier this month, the IOC provisionally lifted the ban shortly before the start of the Asian Games “as a gesture of goodwill to recognise the progress accomplished”, allowing the country to compete under its own flag in Jakarta. Al-Musallam said in an interview on Wednesday that several other countries had faced the same problem, the difference was Kuwait has been grappling with the issue for the last three decades. “This issue is not only in Kuwait but has happened in many other countries in the world.

Cairo : When Mohamed Salah is on the offensive, you better watch out. That’s the lesson countless soccer opponents have learned from Salah, Egypt’s goal-scoring maestro and sports superstar. But this week Salah trained his devastating focus on a new target: the bungling bosses of Egypt’s national soccer association. In a blistering series of Twitter messages, video posts and leaked letters, Salah, 26, vented a summer’s worth of frustrations against the leadership of the Egyptian Football Association for what he called its grossly incompetent handling of Egypt’s short-lived World Cup campaign in Russia in June. Autograph hunters were permitted to knock on Salah’s hotel door in the middle of the night, he said,

while preening Egyptian celebrities barged in on him, invading his personal space. On long plane journeys, players traveled in economy class while their managers stretched out in businessclass seats. Salah, who also plays for the English club Liverpool, couldn’t even make it to the breakfast buffet without being swamped by fans. A good soccer association ensures that its players are relaxed, Salah noted on Twitter. “But in reality, I don’t see anything but the opposite,” he added. In Egypt, Salah’s outburst came across as more than just a global star railing at domestic failings: It represented a rare, frontal challenge to the authority of a national institution in a country where dissent of any kind can be highly dangerous.

India confident of ending 36-year wait for gold in women’s hockey

Jakarta : Having broken a 20-year-old jinx, a confident Indian women’s hockey team will be desperate to end a long 36-year wait when it takes on Japan in the gold medal clash of the Asian Games in Jakarta on Friday. Last edition’s bronze medallist India on Wednesday registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over China to enter the final of the Asian Games after 20 years. The Indian women last made it to the summit clash of the

Asian Games in Bangkok in 1998 and ended runners-up after losing to Korea. Having already achieved that goal, India’s next target will be to reclaim the gold medal after 36 long years. The Indians won their only Asiad gold in the women’s hockey way back in 1982 in New Delhi. Come tomorrow, they would be desperate to break that jinx and add to their one gold, one silver and three bronze medals tally from nine previous appearances.

Going by world ranking and performance in the tournament so far, world No 9 India will start as favourites against 14th ranked Japan.Like their male counterparts, the Indian women too have been impressive in the Games so far with an unbeaten record, having registered huge victories against Indonesia (80), Kazakhstan (21-0), Korea (4-1) and Thailand (5-0) in the pool stages before the close win over resilient Chinese.

Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 1 will launch long-awaited India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) that will have at least one branch in every district and focus on financial services in rural areas, a senior official said. “The launch of India Post Payments Bank has been rescheduled for September 1. The Prime Minister will launch,” a senior government official told. The launch of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) was recently rescheduled in the wake of seven-day national mourning declared after the demise of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to launch IPPB on August 21. In Gujarat,

the mega launch of IPPB will commence with the state level event at ahmedabad where CM Vijay rupani will dedicate IPPB services to citizens. This event will be organized at Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Auditorium, Bodakdev, Ahmedabad at 10.30 hrs on 1st September, 2018. The state level event will be followed by simultaneous launches at 32 bank branches and 128 access points in various parts of the state. IPPB will leverage the reach of 1.55 lakh post office branches to provide banking and financial service to people in rural areas. “Government is trying to link all the 1.55 lakh post office branches with IPPB services by the end of this year,”

the official said. This will create the country’s largest banking network with a direct presence at the village level. IPPB CEO Suresh Sethi had earlier said that IPPB will go live with 650 branches in addition to 3,250 access points co-located at post offices and around 11,000 postmen both in rural and urban areas will provide doorstep banking services. IPPB has permission to link around 17-crore postal savings bank (PSB) accounts with its account. With IPPB in place, people in the rural area will be able to avail digital banking and financial services, including money transfer, to any bank account either with help of the mobile app or by visiting a post office.

New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said the demonetisation of Rs 500/1,000 notes led to formalisation of economy, more tax collection and higher growth. His statement comes a day after RBI data revealed that almost all the scrapped notes were returned to banks. He said the Reserve Bank has twice released its reports stating that the demonetised notes Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 have been substantially deposited in the banks. “A widely stated comment has been that just because most of the currency came back into the banks, the object of demonetisation has not succeeded. “Was the invalidation of

the non-deposited currency the only object of demonetisation? Certainly not,” Jaitley said in a blog. The larger purpose of demonetisation was to move India from a tax non-compliant society to a tax-compliant society, he said adding this necessarily involved formalisation of the economy and a blow to the black money. “This is the positive impact of demonetisation. More formalisation of economy, more money in the system, higher tax revenue, higher expenditure, higher growth after the first two quarters,” the Finance Minister said. Jaitley said the growth of Income Tax collections in the pre-demonetisation two years was 6.6 per cent and 9 per cent.

Mumbai: The rupee on Thursday slid further by 15 paise to close at a fresh lifetime low of 70.74 to the dollar due to month-end demand for the US currency from importers and rising crude oil prices. In the day trade, the rupee plunged to a record low of 70.90 to the dollar as firming oil prices fanned fears of widening current account deficit. A stronger dollar in overseas markets and losses in local stocks markets also impacted the rupee sentiment. The dollar index, which shows the dollar strength against a basket of currencies,

was trading up 0.11 per cent at 94.56. Earlier the rupee resumed lower at 70.64 against the previous closing level of 70.59 a dollar at the interbank foreign exchange market here. Later it fell to a record low of 70.90 in volatile trade in morning deals. The rupee pared some of the losses to trade near 70.69 in afternoon deals but slid in the last hour of trade to close at 70.74, a fall of 15 paise or 0.21 per cent against the US currency. The domestic unit came under pressure on surging crude oil which held on its highest level in over a month, a dealer said.

Centre, states apportion Rs 12,000 cr Integrated GST in August New Delhi: As much as Rs 12,000 crore lying in Integrated GST or IGST pool has been apportioned between the Centre and states. The central government will get about Rs 6,000 crore and the remaining would be distributed among the states in proportion to their revenue collection in August, an official told PTI. The apportionment would help improve the indirect tax position of both the Centre and states. This is the third time that the IGST funds have been divided between the Centre and states. As much as Rs 50,000

crore was settled between the Centre and states in June, and Rs 35,000 crore in February this year. “Funds accumulated in the IGST pool are gradually coming down. This shows that businesses are utilising the accumulated IGST to pay taxes. Also timely payment of taxes and filing of returns have helped in lowering the balance in IGST pool,” the official said. A policy decision has been taken that when some substantial amount accrues to IGST pool it should be apportioned, so that funds do not lie idle with the Centre, the

official said. Under GST, the tax levied on consumption of goods or rendering of service is split 50:50 between the Centre and the state. Such tax is known as Central-GST or CGST and State-GST or SGST. On interstate movement of goods as well as imports, an Integrated-GST or IGST is levied, which accrues to the Centre. A cess is levied on top of these taxes on sin and luxury goods which make up for the compensation kitty used to make good of any revenue shortfall faced by states on implementation of GST. Ideally

there should be ‘nil’ balance in the IGST pool since the amount should be used for payment of Central GST and State GST. As some businesses are ineligible to claim the benefits of input tax credit or ITC, the balance gets accumulated in the IGST pool. Post the amendments brought about in the GST law earlier this month, credit of IGST which includes IGST paid on the port (import of goods) would be first adjusted towards any kind of tax payable under the regime of IGST/CGST/ SGST.

Bullet train project: New satellite station in Vadodara to manufacture India’s longest girder

Vadodara : In order to launch the longest girder of India’s first bullet train, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has decided to set up a new satellite station for Indian Railways in Vadodara, Gujarat. The 220-metre long girder is the longest being used in the bullet train project and is also longer than any girder, even in Japan’s Shinkansen; it will come where current platform number 7 of Vadodara station is. This platform is used by seven pairs of trains

daily for reversal only. In other words, trains which come to Vadodara from two different directions Delhi and Ahmedabad, have to use this platform to reverse here. Speaking to The Indian Express, NHSRCL Chief Project Manager (Vadodara) Pradeep Ahirkar said the new Chhayapuri station, which is five kms away, will give Vadodara the new satellite station, like Delhi’s Nizamuddin station. To be built at a cost of Rs 40 crore, which has been handed over to Western Railway by

NHSRCL, the station will consist of three floors and modern facilities, a far cry from the current halt station with a thatched roof for a single storey building without platforms. The new building will have two platforms for the four lines. The building, the construction of which has already begun, is expected to be ready by March 2019 following which operations will begin. The launching of the girder will take around two years after which the concerned platform will be restored.

Delhi and a few Congress MLAs from Gujarat. The PAAS leader’s grandfather too visited him. According to sources, Hardik Patel stopped consuming water on Thursday. Hardik Patel has been demanding reservation for Patidars in

jobs and education besides loan waiver for farmers. The 25-year-old leader, who is facing sedition charges, took to social media and said his grandfather backed his decision to fight for farmers. People in different villages and towns across Gujarat continued to support Patel in his hunger strike. As co-accused Chirag Patel and Dinesh Bambhania were present, public prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt requested the court to start with framing of charges in Hardik’s absence. However, as the lawyers of both the accused were also not present, sessions judge DP Mahida adjourned the hearing to 14 September.

Russia to hold Mediterranean naval drills as Syria tensions rise

Moscow : Russia’s Ministry of Defence said on Thursday it would hold a major naval exercise in the Mediterranean Sea from Sept. 1 to Sept. 8, the TASS news agency reported, a move that coincides with rising tensions between Moscow and Washington over Syria. Russia has this month been actively expanding its naval forces in the Mediterranean, part of what a Russian newspaper on Tuesday called Moscow’s largest naval build-up since it entered the Syrian conflict in 2015. TASS cited the defence ministry as saying that 25 warships and submarines and 30 planes, including fighter jets and strategic bombers, would take part, and that the drills would involve anti-aircraft, anti-submarine and anti-mining exercises. The drills come amid rising tensions between Russia and the West over Syria’s northern rebel-held region of Idlib. A source said on Wednesday that Russia’s ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, was preparing a phased offensive there. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that militants in Idlib had to be liquidated, describing them as “a festering abscess”. “In the interest of ensuring the security of shipping and aircraft flights in line with international law, the areas of the exercise will be declared dangerous for shipping and flights,” TASS quoted the defence ministry as saying. Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s Ambassador to the United States, said earlier on Thursday that he had told U.S. officials that Moscow was concerned by signs that the United States was preparing new strikes on Syria.

Donald Trump warns of ‘violence’ if Democrats win midterm elections

Washington : President Donald Trump urged evangelical leaders this week to get out the vote ahead of the upcoming midterm elections and warned of “violence” by opponents if they fail. Trump made the dire warning at a White House dinner Monday evening attended by dozens of conservative Christian pastors, ministers and supporters of his administration. Trump was stressing the stakes in November when he warned that, if Democrats win, they “will overturn everything that we’ve done and they’ll do it quickly and violently,” according to attendees and audio of his closed-door remarks obtained by media outlets, including The New York Times. He specifically mentioned self-described antifa, or anti-fascist groups, describing them as “violent people.” Asked Wednesday what he meant, Trump told reporters, “I just hope there won’t be violence.” “If you look at what happens … there’s a lot of unnecessary violence all over the world, but also in this country. And I don’t want to see it,” Trump said. At the dinner, Trump talked up his administration’s efforts to bolster conservative Christian causes and urged those gathered to get their “people” to vote, warning the efforts could quickly be undone. “I just ask you to go out and make sure all of your people vote,” Trump said, according to the Times. “Because if they don’t vote we’re going to have a miserable two years and we’re going to have, frankly, a very hard period of time because then it just gets to be one election, you’re one election away from losing everything you’ve got.
