‘Change passport to machine readable’ COIMBATORE Indians residing in India and abroad, who are holding hand-written passports as well as the 20year passports with validity beyond November 24, 2015, have been requested to apply for re-issue of passports and obtain Machine Readable Passports (MRP) before November 24, 2015. Invalid : According to a release, those passports will become invalid as the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has by November 24, 2015, decided to phase out all non-machine readable passports. The result of this will be foreign governments denying visa to those travelling with a non-MRP. Issue of machine readable passports commenced from 2001 and all new Indian passports are ICAO-compliant MRP now.

New Delhi BJP president Amit Shah, who has filed a discharge plea in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case, in his application before a CBI court in Mumbai has argued that “why Tulsiram Prajapati could not have been killed like Kauserbi” if he was an eyewitness. The court is likely to pronounce order on his plea on Tuesday. On the Supreme Court order, the CBI had merged the Tulsiram Prajapati encounter case with the Sohrabuddin case, which also involves the killing of his wife Kauserbi. Claiming that the CBI was a “pliable agency”, Shah in his application said: “First, it is the case of the CBI that Sohrabuddin was killed in encounter and subsequently Kauserbi was killed by the accused police officers since she

was a witness. There is suggest as to why nothing on record to Tulsiram could also not

presumption that the applicant is involved in Sohrabuddin-Kauserbi offence.” According to the CBI, Tulsiram was the third person travelling with Sohrabuddin and his wife when they were picked up by the Gujarat Police team from Hyderabad, days before the husband-wife were killed in Ahmedabad. More than a year later, Tulsiram was also killed allegedly in a stagemanaged encounter by the Gujarat Police. Shah has

taken on the CBI investigation on several grounds, including the Popular Builders firing case, which is the most crucial case in the whole investigation. In 2004, the Gujarat Police booked Sohrabuddin, Tulsiram and others in a firing case in which they allegedly attacked the office of citybased builders Raman Patel and his brother Dashrath Patel, named as Popular Builders in Navrangpura. Sohrabuddin’s brother

Rubabuddin said his family would challenge the ruling in the Bombay high court, while the CBI said it would study the court order before taking further steps in the matter. The Congress on Tuesday hit back at the ruling BJP by accusing it of exerting pressure to extract a ruling in favour of Shah. “The CBI is now chained, caged and totally immobilized ... it needs a much deeper inquiry,” said party spokesperson Ajoy Kumar.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley denies pressuring RBI to cut rates

Mumbai/ New Delhi Finance Minister Arun Jaitley denied on Tuesday that he was pressuring the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) into cutting interest rates, after his comment that the high cost of capital was stifling investment sent markets into a tizzy. Jaitley, in a speech in Delhi on Monday, said "costly capital" was one of the factors impacting manufacturers. Analysts said his remarks were the most public attempt yet by the government to press

have been killed like Kauserbi when he was also an eyewitness as per the CBI and was very much with the accused police officers.” Shah in his application, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, said the CBI has presumed that the third person travelling along with Sohrabuddin and Kauserbi was Tulsiram. “In the entire chargesheet in the case of Tulsiram’s investigation, the applicant (Shah) is implicated in the said offence only on a

the Reserve Bank of India governor into easing rates. But Jaitley denied that his remarks were intended to pressure RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, and had instead been meant to discuss the challenges facing the manufacturing sector. "The fact is that there was not a single sentence reference (not even a word) in my entire speech to either the Reserve Bank or its Governor," Jaitley said in a Facebook posting. "One of the many points that I

made was that the cost of capital has to be cut down. Any one speaking on the subject of 'Make in India' into a manufacturing hub would necessarily suggest this." Traders said Jaitley's comments on Monday had reinforced expectations that the government is keen for the RBI to lower borrowing costs rates in order to help economic growth. The Finance Minister said when "credit offtake is slow, the infrastructure creation becomes slower, manufacturers find it difficult to afford costly capital". Benchmark 10-year bond yields fell 4 basis points to 7.89 per cent on Tuesday, not far from a near 1-1/2 year low of 7.82 per cent in mid-December.

BCCI said in a statement. "MS Dhoni has chosen to retire from Test Cricket with immediate effect in order to concentrate on ODI and T20 formats. BCCI while respecting the decision of M S Dhoni to retire from Test Cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test Cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India," it added. Kohli's aggressiveness, sometimes

bordering on brash and go for the kill attitude in Adelaide gave a glimpse into life beyond Dhoni. Dhoni's sudden decision was surely swayed by Kohli's performance in the first Test and with another overseas Test series defeat concluded, his stand probably became all the more easy. India's most successful captain has had a torrid of late and has been criticised for his poor

overseas record. Trailing 02 in the four-match Test series, the third match here Tuesday ended in a stalemate. India's poor run in Tests overseas continued, prompting Dhoni, who guided India to most number of Test wins as captain (27), to quit the five-day format. Dhoni has played 90 Tests for India, scoring 4,876 runs and was instrumental in taking the Indian team to the top of Test rankings.

Home minister reviews security situation New Delhi Home Minister Rajnath Singh Tuesday reviewed the country's security situation at a high-level meeting here. The meeting comes ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit to India for the Republic Day celebrations and following the recent violence in Assam perpetrated by Bodo militants and a blast in Bengaluru. "We discussed the country's security situation," army chief Gen. Dalbir Singh told reporters after the

meeting, but refused to give details. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and chiefs of intelligence agencies were also present in the meeting. Last week,

the home minister had met the army chief to review the security situation in Assam where over 70 people were killed and around 10,000 were taking shelter in relief camps after Bodo militants attacked adivasis in three districts.

up a hung verdict with PDP emerging as the single-largest party with 28 seats in the 87-member lower house. BJP emerged as the second-largest party with 25 seats followed by National Conference at 15 and Congress with 12. Smaller parties and independents won seven seats. So far no single party or combination of parties have staked a claim for formation of the government. PDP is holding intra-party discussions on possible alliances which the party can enter into to form the next government. "Sayeed continued consultations with the party's rank and file," Akhtar said.

The battle against terrorism is one we can't afford to lose Terror appears to stay one step ahead of the security agencies. That was proved again in the Church Street blast in Bengaluru on Sunday. A blast outside an eatery has claimed one life and injured three people. The worrying part about the blast is not so much the intensity, which was minor compared to past outrages, but the fact that it now transpires that the intelligence agencies had prior information that some sort of attack would take place. It is possible that this attack was not part of a larger plot but a lone wolf one, which makes it all the more hard to deal with. Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah's waffling explanations made it all the more painful. The home minister's high-level meeting can be of cold comfort to people who have been told that several public places could be terror targets in the days to come. This has become a predictable story - there are warnings of attacks picked up from intelligence chatter but the authorities are caught flat-footed when something happens. It is nobody's case that all terror attacks can be prevented. But certainly, there has to be a much more proactive approach to this menace. The problem seems to be the complete lack of coordination among the state and central security agencies and confusing political signals. Apart from sophisticated electronic surveillance, much more emphasis has to be placed on the human factor. People who know the locality and terrain are invaluable in intelligence gathering as experience in many countries has shown. Across the world, below-the-radar movements are hard to monitor and often terrorists slip through these cracks, as was seen in Boston in the United States and in Volgograd in Russia in 2013. Given that we will have to live with the threat of terror for a long time to come, it also becomes necessary for the police to be better trained to handle such attacks. In the Bengaluru case, those gathering evidence were trampling all over the site in a seemingly directionless manner. To provide adequate training will take time and resources, but it will be well worth it given the human and material cost of terror. The signal from the state should be that it can and will take on terrorists. Unfortunately, that is not what is being projected now. The fight against terror is never going to be easy, but it should not be made as easy for terrorists as it is today.

Soon, targeted drug therapy for heart health

A new group of proteins called ion channels has been discovered by researchers which they say can play an important role in developing drugs for people suffering from cardiac arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat. According to researchers, ion channels are capable of generating the electrical signals of the heart differently than previously thought. Proteins called ion channels generate the electrical signals of the heart by opening a gate or pore for charged ions to cross the cell membrane. "This knowledge we are providing is to revise the model built in the 1950s," said Jianmin Cui, professor of biomedical

engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. Cui added that KCNQ1 is very important to the rhythm of the heart as there are more than 250 mutations of the channel that have been associated with cardiac arrhythmia. "The trouble was that without an accurate model of how the channel gating works, we were limited in our understanding of why these mutations lead to fatal arrhythmias and in our ability to design therapeutic interventions that can specifically fix the defect in the afflicted tissues," he noted. The findings of the study are published in a paper that appeared in the journal eLife

Amitabh Bachchan enjoys Aamir's PK is hardly gutsy, but it's editing process of 'Shamitabh' good enough for silly Twitter rants Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan says he enjoys being a part of the editing of his upcoming film Shamitabh and is impressed by the high technology used in the process. The movie helmed by Paa director R Balki, also stars Raanjhanaa actor Dhanush and Kamal Haasan's younger daughter Akshara in her debut. "The day was spent with Shamitabh. Discussions on its promotions, its release plans and the involvement of others!," said the actor while praising the high technology and computerised execution, used in film editing now. Bachchan, 72, recalled how actors were not allowed to enter the edit room in the old days of

Bollywood, saying that it is normal today for actors to sit with the editors. "Actually now being in the company of edit is pretty normal. In those days we were never allowed even 100 meters from the edit room. If perchance you were to find yourself in the edit, you either paid a fine, fed the staff, and left in a hurry before you got

beaten up. "The editorial space was sacred. It was here that the film took shape. It was here that it was decided what your performance would be, because the editor has the capacity to completely destroy your performance, or conversely to make you look like a genius, by the flick of a finger!" he said.

Karisma and Sunjay were on the verge of finalising their divorce The divorce proceedings of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapur and her husband, Delhi-based industrialist Sunjay Kapur have reportedly hit a roadblock because of their failure to agree on a few issues related to the welfare of their children. According to a report in The Times of India, on the day of the final hearing, the couple, who had filed a mutual consent divorce petition in the city family court, got into a loud argument and were packed off by the judge to work out a settlement by February. The celebrity couple were present in court along with their lawyers before principal judge Laxmi Rao on the date when they were to get their decree. But both failed to agree to the terms of a trust being set up for the welfare of their two minor children, Samaira and Kian Raaj Kapoor -

Karisma reportedly wanted to have more say over the trust than she was getting and Sunjay was unwilling to let go of his control. Sunjay was the first to move the Bandra family court on May 31 this year. He filed a custody petition for the children, saying Karisma was seeing someone else. The estranged couple then converted the custody plea into a mutual consent divorce petition in June. When both sides got loud in court, the judge directed

them to come back with a final settlement, after working it out amicably outside the court, or withdraw their joint petition for divorce under the Hindu Marriage Act. Once a mutual consent plea is filed, there is a six month cooling off period to give time to both sides for a rethink, at the end of which if they still want to split, divorce is granted. Karisma is represented by divorce lawyer Kranti Sathe, while Sunjay had two top lawyers coming in from Delhi.

Move over Valentine's Day, PK is here. It can now be concluded that Aamir Khan's new film has taken the favourite outrage spot in the lives of religious fundamentalists that was hitherto reserved for couples who wanted to gift each other pink teddy bears and big red cards on 14 February. While the lovers can breathe a sigh of relief, film goers aren't so lucky. There have been reports that Hindutva activists have been burning posters - which is pretty routine for angry Indians - and vandalising theatres in Gujarat. Muslim clerics too have joined the din, demanding 'objectionable' scenes degrading Islam be removed from the film. In fact, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali, a renowned Sunni cleric in Uttar Pradesh even suggested that the film might be detrimental to 'communal harmony'. Given that religious fundamentalists of any stripe aren't exactly the brightest sparks among humans, it is almost amusing to see how a strictly mediocre film has sparked a violent debate -

not on its merits as a film, but on its assumed intent. Since PK, on the face of it, seems to be questioning organised religion - some Christians, Muslims and Hindus have seen red and are accusing the film of meting out step-motherly treatment to each of them, while attempting to glorify others. Since the favourite battleground for such matters (after TV debates) is Twitter, the hashtag #PKDebate has started trending and occupied the top spot on the India trend list for two straight days. This hashtag was preceded by another hashtag war #BoycottPK versus #WeSupportPK - making the film seem like the most

visceral work on religion that India has seen in the recent times. While half of the world is busy outraging over PK's audacity and the other half are applauding it, Aamir Khan's film is actually symbolic of the deep fear that effectively props religion up in our society. While religious institutions thrive on the aam aadmi's fear that life might go topsy turvy if their endorsed 'god' is not appeased, the fact that Rajkumar Hirani's protagonist had to be an alien to question organised religion is symptomatic of the intense caution that we have to exercise in a democracy while dealing with religion.

Bigg Boss 8: Diandra Soares is back, but just as a guest this time Diandra Soares is back inside the Bigg Boss house, but only as a guest this time as part of a task. Her mere presence is, however, enough to intimidate all the contestants. Soares doesn't make things easier for herself when she tells Karishma Tanna to avoid faking frienships or when she advises Upen Patel not to talk about her relation with Gautam Gulati. On seeing Gulati, both the friends get emotional and Soares even tells him that she wants him to win the show. "Ab

Siddaramaiah says Bengaluru blast that left Islamic State media: captured a woman dead 'was probably linked to SIMI' Jordan pilot shot down over Syria

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that killed a woman in Bengaluru on Sunday was likely planted by the banned Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), Karnataka Chief Minister K. Siddaramaiah has said. It is also suspected that the low-intensity bomb, which went off outside a restaurant, was assembled outside the city. On Monday, a National Investigation Agency (NIA) team arrived in Bengaluru to probe the low-intensity blast, with the Karnataka government

carrying out a s i m u l t a n e o u s investigation. After an internal security meeting on Monday, Siddaramaiah told reporters that the blast appeared to be SIMI’s doing. “We suspect that a Madhya Pradesh-based SIMI cell orchestrated the blast. The police are looking into this angle, besides studying the modus operandi of explosions that occurred in Bengaluru in 2008, 2010 and 2013. We are confident of cracking this

case,” he said. While no arrests have been made so far, the police are said to be ascertaining the names of suspects the NIA has shared information about. Police sources said SIMI might have been assisted by local supporters. “They received support from local activists. We are questioning a few people,” the source added. By coincidence or design, Sunday’s blast took place exactly nine years to the day since Bengaluru witnessed its first-ever terrorist strike.

BEIRUT Islamic State has released what it claims is an interview with the Jordanian pilot who was captured by the militant group after his plane went down in Syria last week. Published in the group’s English-language magazine, the interview, which could not be independently verified, quotes 26-year-old Mu’ath al-Kaseasbeh as saying that his F-16 fighter jet was downed by a “heatseeking missile.” Kaseasbeh is the first foreign pilot captured from the U.S.-led coalition targeting the group with airstrikes at its strongholds in Syria and Iraq.

Kaseasbeh, a first lieutenant in Jordan’s air force, was taken by Islamic State on Wednesday near the eastern Syrian city of Raqqa, which is the radical group’s de facto capital. The United States denies that his plane was shot down, although Jordanian officials have issued contradictory statements on the cause of the incident. “My plane was struck by a heat-seeking missile. I heard and felt its hit,” Kaseasbeh is quoted as saying, adding that he was forced to eject after the missile damaged his engine and caused his aircraft to “deviate from its normal flight path.”

Fadnavis to expand Cabinet

We will not accept any antiparty activity in TMC : Mamata Kharagpur (WB): Beset with rising group rivalries and airing of individual opinions by some party leaders, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Teusday issued a strong warning to the leaders against antiparty activities, reminding them that "no individual is above the party". "We will not accept any anti-party activity. If the party is not there, the individual is non-existent," she said addressing a party workers' meeting here in West Midnapur district. Banerjee's strong reaction is because of some party leaders singing different tunes recently on some issues and reports of group rivalries in some constituencies. Trinamool Congress MP Sugato Bose recently went on record, saying, "The

culprits in the financial fraud (Saradha chit fund scam), whoever they may be, have to be brought to book through the legal process as poor people have been duped." To give another instance, on the sidelines of the convocation of Presidency University, Bose had said the people should have faith in the Judiciary as the court would take the right decision. Bose's comment caused an embarassment

to the party at a time when the TMC supremo had launched a scathing attack against the Narendra Modi government and the CBI, terming the arrest of state transport minister Madan Mitra in the Saradah scam as an outcome of "political vendetta". She had also directed her MPs to wear black badges and shawls and to protest during the just-concluded winter session of Parliament.

Maharashtra Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is all set to expand his two-month-old Cabinet by inducting 12 more Ministers. According to Cooperation Minister Chandrakant Patil, of the 12 Ministers, six will be from the BJP, two from the Shiv Sena and four from other allies. As of now, no date has been set for the oathtaking ceremony. The expansion of the Cabinet means that the other four allies from the grand alliance, namely Republican Party of India (RPI), Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtana (SSS),

Rashtriya Samaj Party (RSP) and Shivsangram, will be finally accommodated in BJP-led Government. The Devendra Fadnavis Government had taken oath on October 31 and MLAs of no party other than the BJP were sworn in then as the Sena had refused to be part of his Ministry following differences over its share in the Government. However, after it relented, seven of its members were inducted into the Ministry on December 5, taking the Cabinet strength to 30. With the planned expansion, the strength will go up to 42.

The woman, who arrived from Sierra Leone on Sunday night, is in isolation at Glasgow's Gartnavel Hospital. All possible contacts with the case are being investigated, including on flights to Scotland via Heathrow. UK Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt confirmed

that the woman would be taken to a specialist unit in London. She will be flown from Glasgow and taken to the Royal Free Hospital in north London "as soon as we possibly can," Mr Hunt said. The hospital has a specialist isolation

SPORTS ROUND Australia v India: Ashton Agar added to squad for SCG Test AUSTRALIA’S cricket selectors have retained the same 12 for the fourth and final Test against India starting on Tuesday but, perhaps ominously for Shane Watson, have added 2013 Ashes sensation Ashton Agar to the squad.

In all likelihood, Agar will be the player to drop out of the 12 on match day. The only serious prospect of him playing is if the SCG wicket looks sufficiently spin-friendly to support his inclusion as back-up to Nathan Lyon, who is Australia’s leading wicket-taker in the series with 19 wickets at 29.89. That said, for a venue that historically has favoured spin, it is not a ground on which Lyon has enjoyed any real success. H His three Tests there have yielded only six wickets at an unflattering 58.50 apiece. England legspinner Scott Borthwick outbowled him there last summer, as did Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath the summer before.

Agar has a flair for the spectacular. His 98 on debut as Australia’s number 11 — the highest score in history by a No 11 and one he was steered through by the late Phillip Hughes — in the Trent Bridge Test of 2013 is the stuff of Ashes legend. In the same Nottingham Test, he also carved out a place for himself as the first teenage Australian spinner ever to capture a Test wicket when he had England captain Alastair Cook caught by Michael Clarke in the second innings. More memorable still was the wicket he was denied, which he had Stuart Broad caught at

first slip, again by Clarke, off a blatant edge only for umpire Aleem Dar to astonishingly rule not out. But it was Broad’s decision not to walk that sparked a feud that carried all the way over into the next Ashes series Down Under. Australia captain Steve Smith welcomed Agar’s inclusion, suggesting he was bowling very well. Agar’s Sheffield Shield numbers don’t entirely support that proposition — with his slow left-arm orthodox spin earning him only seven wickets at 44.7 apiece. Nor is his batting currently hitting the heights of Trent Bridge, with only one half-century featuring in his 130 runs at 32.50.

Top 5 poll sops of all time for Delhi residents Election season is here again in Delhi. This was evident when the Union Cabinet decided to regularise 895 unauthorised colonies in the capital in perhaps the largest sop for Delhiites across income groups ahead of the Assembly polls. This decision is likely to benefit more than 65 lakh people. With nearly 30 to 40 per cent of Delhi's population living in unauthorised colonies, regularisation of colonies has found mention in the manifestos of all political parties in Delhi over the last few elections. Here's a list of some major sops that were offered to the people of Delhi over the last few elections: 1. Regularisation of unauthorised colonies: The BJP has done it this time on a massive scale with 895 colonies. Earlier, the Sheila Dikshit government and other previous regimes had also regularised illegal colonies. 2. Free water: This was something introduced by Aam Aadmi Party chief

Arvind Kejriwal. In the run-up to elections in 2013, he had promised to provide up to 20 kilolitres per month of water free of cost for all of Delhi. But this was implemented only in NDMC areas. 3. Reduced power tariff: The Sheila Dikshit government refused to do it but Arvind Kejriwal ran roughshod over any reservations that the power supplier might have had and ordered an audit on the power companies. At the same time, the AAP government offered a 50 per cent subsidy on power consumption of up to 400 units. 4. Education sops: In the run-up to the election in

2013, the Sheila Dikshit government promised 90 per cent reservation for Delhi students in 12 colleges. At the same time, her education minister AK Walia promised to get 50 per cent seats reserved for Delhi students in 50 colleges which received 50 per cent funding from the government. 5. Dilli Annashree Scheme: When the 2013 elections were announced, then Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit had played Santa Claus and had offered a slew of poll sops. One of the promised sops was to provide 2 lakh houses food subsidy of Rs.600 per month under the Dilli Annashree Scheme.

The use of wind energy for alphabet 'I' propagates the idea of energy conservation." The strategic timing of the installation, said sources, will increase the visibility of the brand Gift City and attract potential foreign investors. GIFTCL officials had earlier zeroed in on Dhola-Kuvan circle, popularly known as

Raksha Shakti circle, for the installation because of its proximity and location. Since the varsity already claimed it, GIFTCL opted for Koba circle considering the visibility aspect. "We want to install the logo before Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Vibrant Gujarat summit. It's a good time to launch the logo to the world," said Jha. Jha said that he was expecting many countries' delegates to visit the GIFT City premises during the events. "India's first smart city and its infrastructure will definitely pull good number of foreign visitors. We have 'plug and play' facilities for techies, finance companies and national and international banks," said Jha.

They held a protest on Sunday and decided to continue with it until its foundation was removed. The residents claimed that they were aware of the effects of radiation through such towers and had complained to the contractor as well as the AMC to act immediately. What has angered the residents is that the foundation was being built and the tower installed in the dead of night. "We will not rest until the tower is

don't want it in front of our house. We don't want it in front of anyone's house," Monisha Agasthi (58), an Indraprasth-9 resident told Mirror. Agasthi is concerned as she had shifted from her flat at Shreyas Crossing to New Ranip as there was a cellular tower on top of that flat and it, she claimed, had affected her. THREE DIED OF CANCER IN A MONTH "I am myself battling cancer. Three persons from those flats died of cancer in a month as the tower had been there for a long time. No one listened to me when I was crying hoarse at the building. Now, we have this staring right in our face. We are not going to sit tight and allow AMC and cellular companies to play with public health. The contractor as well as AMC need to take permission of the residents before installation," she said.
