"We will interrogate and investigate whosoever required," Mr Bassi said, when asked if Shashi Tharoor would be questioned in the case. In a statement, Mr Tharoor said, "I am stunned to hear that the

Delhi Police have filed a case of murder against unknown persons in the demise of my late wife Sunanda. Although we never thought of any foul play in the death of my wife, we all want that a comprehensive investigation be conducted and that the unvarnished truth should come out." Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a five-star hotel in Delhi on January 17 last year, a day after she accused a Pakistani journalist of having an affair

with Mr Tharoor, in an angry Twitter exchange. Days before, she had appeared on television with her husband, declaring they were "happily married." They got married in 2010. "Let us maintain a sense of balance. This is a complaint/FIR against persons unknown, not yet clear whether its suicide or murder. We must not sensationalise this. Let us wait," said Abhishek Manu Singhvi, spokesperson of the Congress, Mr Tharoor's party.

Owaisi's controversial remark draws flak from political and religious leaders New Delhi, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi statement has drawn strong reactions, with political and religious leaders all condemning it in one voice. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took exception to Owaisi's comments as it said that the MIM chief's comments were not worthy of making any comments. "I think Owaisi's comments are worthy of condemnation and not worthy of comment. I think the kind of language he is speaking, I think if he wants to go and pursue politics in Pakistan, this kind of line he could possibly do, he could possibly take," BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao told ANI. "This is a democratic secular country and he must understand that he has to work within the framework of a secular

polity. I hope he understands his responsibilities and he doesnot make such foolish comments again," he added. Meanwhile the Congress termed both majority communalism and minority communalism as two sides of the same coin. "Unfortunately there seems to be a competitive polarization going on in this country and the majority communalism and minority communalism are two sides of the same coin. .....," Congress leader Manish Tewari said. Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali, the Naib

Imam of Lucknow's Aishbagh Eidgah took objection to Owaisi's statements. "Owaisi's statement is objectionable. The intention seems to create divide between the two communities," he said. Soon after his comments which generated a huge controversy, the MIM chief on Monday issued a clarification on his earlier remarks on religion, saying that there was no compulsion on anyone on follow any particular faith. "You have all the rights, please go and read the Koran.....there is no compulsion in religion.....you have all the rights to disagree with me, all the rights to follow a religion," Owaisi told mediapersons here. "Please don't twist what I have said. I have not said that everyone is a Hindu; I have not said that everyone should become a Muslim," he added.

Will the selectors risk replacing Dhoni with Kohli? When the five wise men of Indian cricket meet on Tuesday to pick the 15-member squad for the World Cup, Though there are a few headaches for the selectors in picking any new sensational talent worth discussing, the Dhoni issue is going to become sentimental. Having announced his retirement from Test cricket, though he is available for the triangular series and later for the World Cup, the selectors will be forced to consider Virat Kohli for the captain’s job. There are two ways to look at it. If Dhoni is picked as the captain when he isn’t in great form, the selectors will draw wrath from all quarters if the results do not come. On the other hand if Kohli replaces Dhoni as captain, we will get to watch fresh strategies because the bowling attack is more suited to the one-day format than the Tests. Let’s not forget Dhoni’s record, which isn’t bad in ODIs at all. Will the selectors risk replacing Dhoni with Kohli? The batting for the shorter version selects itself. Had Pujara or K. L. Rahul shown glimpses of authentic stroke play, their slots would have ticked themselves but the weird way in which both played in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series allows the selectors to assign those slots to others. One of those slots should go to Ambati Rayudu. The other slot can go to Yuvraj Singh; who for reasons known to him had emotionally said that he may not play the World Cup again. But he is batting well and has recently scored three centuries. If observed minutely he has cut down his initial movement drastically by standing on the middle stump. That perhaps gives him time to judge the line and length early. It does seem that his initial movement was creating some problems. The point is, if he is comfortable with his new adjustment, though facing a 145 kmph plus pacer could be a dangerous proposition, what does matter is the balance and head position. He is able to bisect the field at will. Although while playing his characteristic mid-wicket drives, he will have to be careful. The man who helped India win the 2011 World Cup striking form at the right time is a very good sign. The World Cup is not a stage for trainees. If an experienced player is in form then he deserves to be picked. Other batsmen M. Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Suresh Raina are automatic selections. Add Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni and it’s a 300plus runs side. Robin Uthappa can be used as an opener or as a finisher in addition to his wicket-keeping. He is a batsman in form and performing consistently. Out of form Dhawan is unlikely to find a place. Left-arm spinner and useful bat Axar Patel seems to be a certainty. There could be a debate between R. Ashwin and leg-spinner Amit Mishra. The selectors will have to think dispassionately. The World Cup is a different ball game from all other cricket tournaments. Being defending champion means India has players who have ‘been there, done that.’ That surely trumps the risk of selecting untested talent. The selectors must make use of that experience in the squad, if India is to successfully defend the title.

it is affecting those countries whose economy is surviving on crude oil. Some of these countries, with large investible surplus, have been traditional investors globally. With crude prices at record low, funds from these countries would not flow to global markets. Global oil prices fell by over 50 per cent since last June to below $50 per barrel on January 5, 2015, a dramatic drop reminiscent of the 1998 fall in oil prices, which led to Russian default, shaking the global financial system. Bihar wants Rekha as brand ambassador to boost state tourism Mumbai; "Bas ek bar mera kaha maan lijiye/Bihar aakar sab jaan lijiye…" If the Bihar government has its way, the state tourism department mandarins may soon have to rework the famous lyrics of Umrao Jaan to come up with something like this to attract tourists to Bihar. The tourism minister said the department had short-listed two persons - actress Rekha and lyricist-scriptwriter Javed Akhtar - to be the brand ambassadors. “But my personal choice is Rekhaji,” he added. The minister said there was more to Bihar tourism than the Buddhist circuit. “Bihar is often associated with Buddhist sites such as Bodh Gaya, but there are many other sites of tourist attraction,” he said. “We need to showcase such places to attract more and more tourists.” The Opposition, however, took the state government’s move with a pinch of salt. “We do not mind if Rekhaji becomes the brand ambassador of Bihar tourism, but the image of the state has already been sullied by this government because of lawlessness and other reasons,” Nand KishoreYadav, the leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, said.

Mumbai; Bigg Boss Season 8 ended on a low-rating note. But its makers are leaving no stone unturned with Bigg Boss Halla Bol, the extended stint of the show. Rumours suggest that the five ‘challengers’, sent into the house to boost the current season’s sagging ratings have each been assigned ‘a role to play out’ by the channel. Sambhavna Seth and Mahek Chahal’s primary job will reportedly be to irk the two f e m a l e ‘champions’ Dimpy Mahajan and Karishma Tanna. This claim would appear true going by the literally hardhitting note on which Halla Bol kicked off. D u r i n g M o n d a y ’s e p i s o d e , Sambhavna virtually sounded off the battle cry by hurling a shoe at Dimpy - the antic being in sync with the show’s overall low-brow character. It all started

when challengers Dimpy and Sambhavna were chatting up champions Pritam Singh and Gautam Gulati. Sambhavna, perhaps looking for the right cue, kicked off an argument with Dimpy who, as if to further instigate her during the argument, waved a hand at Sambhavna and also blew kisses at her. The verbal spat went on till Sambhavna took off one of her shoes and hurled it at Dimpy. Dimpy then went to the bathroom where she broke down even as Mahek stepped in to placate her. Later, Dimpy’s estranged husband Rahul, also a challenger, told her she should also have thrown a shoe at Sambhavna. It is said that the Dimpy-Sambhavna fracas will be allowed to snowball for a while in a bid to increase the show’s ratings. Meanwhile, challenger Ajaz Khan, we hear, will try to provoke champions Ali Quli Mirza and Pritam. Challenger Mahek’s ‘job’ also includes flirting with champion Gautam Gulati to unsettle the normally cool Karishma. Rahul Mahajan, on the other hand, will reportedly try cosying up to his estranged wife to grab the eyeballs.

Is Congress fighting polls in India or Pakistan? asks Shah on doubts on boat issue Bhubaneswar Hitting out at Congress for raising doubts over the Pakistani boat incident, BJP President Amit Shah today asked the opposition party whether it was fighting elections in India or Pakistan. On his maiden visit to Odisha, Shah said it should be the ‘duty’ of the Congress to boost the morale of the defence personnel instead of finding faults with NDA government’s determined efforts to curb terror. “I will like to ask the Congress from where (do)

they fight elections? In India or Pakistan ?” Shah asked while addressing BJP’s ‘Mahasangram’ rally here. Congress has raised doubts over government’s version of Pakistani boat incident near Porbandar last week and asked it to “come clean” and explain “which terrorist organisation” was behind the episode that unfolded on the high seas. The Congress stand triggered a war of words with the BJP which accused the opposition party of touching a “new low” and doing politics

over terror. Shah lauded the Coast Guard and the defence intelligence wing for saving the country recently from another terrorist attack through water route. Shah said the Narendra Modi government at the Centre was determined to foil any attack and and give a befitting reply to cross border firings. “They (Pakistan) fire bullets from across the border, but the nature of India’s response under NDA government has changed. We are giving a befitting reply.

Baba Ramdev's event attracted many famous faces from the wrestling world

Now there is a difference as the BJP-led NDA government has taken it seriously. Earlier, they (Pakistan) used to open fire first and they ended it too. But now, we end the firing,” the BJP chief said. E x p r e s s i n g confidence that the Narendra Modi government would provide good governance in the country for many years, he asked AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi to submit score card of 60 years of Congress rule in the country instead of

seeking to know its performance in the last 6 months. “Rahul Baba is asking us for a report card on what we have done in last six months. I ask you, first give a report card on what your family has done in 60 years when it ruled the country.” Faulty UPA policies had pushed the nation into a situation of inflation, high prices and low growth, Shah claimed, adding that the turn around had started with the coming to power of the politically stable Modi government.

Hindu Mahasabha functionary asks youths to marry girls of other faiths

People know him for his expertise in yoga, knowledge of Ayurveda, and sharp comments on corruption and black money - but on Monday Baba Ramdev showed off his wrestling skills in Hardwar. The yoga guru organised a national-level wrestling and kabbadi championship in the holy city on Monday to mark the 20th foundation day of his ashram, the Divya Yog Mandir. Many familiar faces from Indian wrestling attended the event, but ultimately the yoga guru walked away with all the appreciation for his spirit and skills.

New Delhi; A Hindu Mahasabha functionary on Tuesday stirred a controversy by appealing to Hindu youths to marry girls from other faiths as a counter to 'Love Jihad'. Addressing a meeting of followers, working president of the Haryana unit of the Hindu Mahasabha, Dharmapal Siwach said the 'Bahu Laao Beti Bachaao (Bring Daughters-in-law, Save Daughters)' campaign would be launched from February. He said the campaign aims to fight against 'Love Jihad', and Hindu youths will be asked to marry and bring girls from other religions like Islam, Christianity and others. "We will ensure the dignity of the girls of other religions in the campaign. We will bind them in the bond of marriage and help such couples," he said. The campaign will not only be carried out in Haryana, but also throughout the country, he said. He urged Hindu youths to bring in more people to the Hindu Mahasabha to strengthen the outfit.

SPORTS ROUND Jadeja and Axar get the nod for World Cup Two additional seamers for the tri-series After obtaining the opinion of its NCAattached physiotherapist Nitin Patel, the BCCI has selected all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in its 15member team for the ICC World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand in February-March. The 26-year-old from Saurashtra, who has played 109 One-Day Internationals, returned home from Australia in the last week of December to remedy the damaged shoulder of his bowling hand. He is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s NCA set-up with SRMC, Chennai. “He’s doing wonderfully well. He should be able to hit training after 10 days,” said BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel at the first team announcement press conference in six years. Patel also said that fast bowler Ishant Sharma had been laid low by a minor knee niggle and hence was not included in the XI for the fourth and final Test at Sydney. Taking into account the heavy workload for the likes of Ishant, Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Shami in the four-Test series and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (he’s just recovered from an injury), the BCCI has made

available to captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni two additional seamers for the tri-series in which the third team will be England. More options Dhoni will have seven bowlers to rotate, including Stuart Binny (who is in the World Cup 15), during the tri-series. Dhawal Kulkarni and Mohit Sharma are the other two. Karnataka’s Binny is the man the selectors — his father Roger is a selector — feel has the ability to fill the seamerallrounder’s role. The selectors have also picked Gujarat’s Axar Patel, who has given adequate hints of developing into a leftarm spinner-allrounder. It would not be wrong to surmise, in this particular case, that Axar is cover for Jadeja,

should the latter aggravate his shoulder injury. Credit should be given to the selection committee for choosing the 15 from the probables list of 30 submitted to the ICC a month ago. The two squads were selected after a teleconference with captain Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher. The squad Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt.), Virat Kohli (vice-capt.), Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Stuart Binny, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ambati Rayudu, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma. Dhawal Kulkarni and Mohit Sharma in addition for tri-series

After Saina Nehwal, Vijender Singh too Wants a Padma Bhushan Award

New Delhi; With Saina Nehwal getting the Sports M i n i s t r y ' s recommendation for the Padma Bhushan after a furore over her nomination being rejected, star India boxer Vijender Singh also threw his hat in the ring for the civilian honour but insisted he won't be "hurt" in case of a rejection. Speaking to PTI, Vijender said he preferably wants two-time Olympic medal winning wrestler Sushil Kumar to get the honour, as originally recommended by the Sports Ministry. But in case, one more sportsperson is taken into consideration following Saina's late application, then the Ministry might as well give his name a thought as well. "I was awarded the

Padma Shri in 2010, the same year as Saina. And if you compare, then me and Saina are at par on the performance front. Since my 2008 Olympic bronze and the 2009 World Championships bronze, I have gone on to win an Asian Games gold, a bronze and a silver in Commonwealth Games besides a gold in the World Police Games. So if her name can be considered then I can also try my luck," Vijender said. "My first preference is Sushil. He is without doubt the most successful Indian athlete ever and he should be given preference over everybody but in case the government is considering other names, then they can consider my name too," he added. The 29-year-old, a former world number one

in the middleweight division, said he would have no hard feelings should he be rejected for the honour this year. "I am just trying my luck, I am not saying give it to me or I will be hurt if I don't get it. I am merely saying, consider my name and take a call accordingly," he said. Vijender has already requested Boxing India to forward his name but it remains to be seen whether the Sports Ministry would oblige given that the last date of submission of applications is long over and Saina's name was sent as a special case after she went on record to express her displeasure at being ignored. "If I can be considered under given rules and regulations, it would be fine. I am not demanding it," he said

Gandhinagar Gujarat government today announced a slew of initiatives to assist startups, plastic industry as well as labour intensive units, as part of its new industrial policy for 2015. The Gujarat state government has decided to give Rs 10,000 per month for an year to such youngsters as assistance, to motivate them to do more research and start their own business. Young innovators would be provided a mentor service by a

designated university through an incubation centre. “These mentor institutions, such as universities, will also get Rs 5 lakh for providing such services. To acquire raw material and other technology required by the innovator, each of these institutions will get an additional assistance of Rs 10 lakh,” Gujarat Finance Minister Saurabh Patel said today. To put innovations in the market after mass production, the

government has declared an assistance of Rs 50 lakh as venture capital for each project. “In addition, we will return 70 per cent of tax paid by the entrepreneur for five years. These units are also entitled to get all other benefits which we have declared for MSME units recently,” Patel said. Kashmir: Civilians flee as border fighting continues

Thousands of villagers have fled their homes in Indianadministered Kashmir as Indian and Pakistani troops continue to exchange fire in the region. At least 10 Indian and Pakistani soldiers and civilians have been killed in the violence over the past week. Both sides have accused each other of starting the hostilities. A ceasefire agreed in 2003 remains in place, but the neighbours often accuse each other of violating it. The latest round of hostilities come days before US Secretary of State John Kerry is due to visit India. President Barack Obama is also due to visit India as the chief guest at the country's Republic Day celebrations on 26 January. Some 10,000 civilians living in border villages on the Indian side have fled their homes since fighting began last week, a senior official named Shantmanu told news agency. "We had a narrow escape and there is a war-like situation," Sham Kumar, 54, an affected villager said.

"Pakistani troops are using long-range weapons. It is the first time we have seen such intense shelling." He said he had left his village after a shell landed in a school about 3.5km (2 miles) from the border. India and Pakistan are continuing to exchange fire in the disputed region on Tuesday, reports say. "The firing is going on and we are giving befitting reply to Pakistani shelling," an Indian official said. Pakistan said on Monday that its soldiers were "effectively responding to India's firing". A Pakistani military statement said four civilians, including a woman and a teenage boy, had been killed by Indian fire near the city of Sialkot since Sunday. India said one of its soldiers was killed by Pakistani fire in the Samba area on Monday. Last week, Indian forces in Kashmir killed four Pakistani troops on the border after an Indian soldier was killed in an attack blamed on Pakistan. Pakistan said it had lodged a protest with the Indian high commissioner in

Islamabad. Hostilities between the neighbours have escalated in the past year. In October, 16 people - nine Pakistanis and seven Indians - died when the two sides exchanged fire for several days. Correspondents say 2014 saw an escalation in hostilities between the neighbours, with some of the worst violence in a decade. Both sides have accused each other of initiating the clashes. Earlier in the summer, India's new Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif to his inauguration and there were hopes that relations between Delhi and Islamabad would improve. But relations have deteriorated since then, with India cancelling scheduled talks with Pakistan in August and insisting that Delhi would "not tolerate acts of border violations by Pakistan" and that "ceasefire violations must stop". Kashmir, claimed by both countries in its entirety, has been a flashpoint for more than 60 years and the South Asian rivals have fought two wars over the region.

Make shift room readied for vibrant summit guest AHMEDABAD: Two single beds, nice curtains, chairs with white covers, and a table and wardrobe would furnish the rooms being prepared to host guests coming to Gujarat for the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas celebrations and Vibrant Gujarat Summit (VGS). Earlier, in December, the state government had asked the builder fraternity in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to spare unoccupied luxury flats and bungalows so that guests coming for the Pravasi and Vibrant events could be housed. Officials said the builder community had pledged 300 flats but the government had

insisted on independent bungalows and luxury flats. Hence the government had to settle for only 100 such premises. Officials said the tourism department has given contract for furnishing the flats to one of the contractors hired for setting up tents in Kutch for Rann Utsav. He has been asked to furnish the vacant flats and bungalows with beds, wardrobes, tables and gadgets. A sample flat that was made ready in Gandhinagar was approved by the core members of the Vibrant Gujarat committee. This flat has been made the model for other apartments.
