A few, simple rules for 2015 The year 2014 has been an exciting one for your money box. The S&P BSE Sensex returned about 29%, after having returned just 9% in 2013. A headsup though: don’t expect the same returns next year as well. You’ll be lucky if that happens, but don’t bank on it. Equity and fixed income investments are looking good at the moment; there’s still a lot of steam left. Let’s make a promise to follow a few simple, money rules for 2015. I will not let my money remain idle Either because of laziness or pure inertia, we let our money remain idle in our bank accounts, which earn a paltry interest of usually 4.5%. A short-term debt fund could fetch you somewhere between 8% and 11%, if managed well, and an equity fund typically gives you 12% returns on a compounded basis over the long term. Let’s say, you thought that the equity market was overheated at the start of 2008 and decided to move completely to cash. Fine, but, say, the subsequent volatility scared you into not investing and you did not re-invest in equity since then. Let’s assume you had Rs.5 lakh of idle cash in your bank account. Had it remained there till the start of 2014, it would have grown to just about Rs.6.53 lakh. Instead, if you had invested the money in an equity fund, say UTI Opportunities, you would have earned 10.55% returns compounded—this means that Rs.5 lakh would have become Rs.9 lakh. That’s the opportunity loss you would be staring at. I will restart my SIPs Another example of lethargy can be seen when one or few of our systematic investment plans (SIPs) end and the time comes to renew them. Fund houses, typically, send reminders as our SIPs draw to a close to renew them. Sometimes we act promptly, other times, we don’t. Say, your SIP in UTI Opportunities Fund got over somewhere at the start of 2008. Assuming that you had started your SIP in May 2008 (Rs.10,000 a month), you would have made about Rs.15.41 lakh till now. But had you procrastinated and started the same SIP in December 2008, you would d have made about Rs.13.08 lakh— Rs.2.33 lakh lesser. That’s what laziness could cost you if you put off your important decisions. So, do find the time and renew your SIPs when they become due. Here is a word of advise for you: Make sure one of your SIPs is in a tax-saving equity fund. Tax planning is important but most of us do it at the last minute. Some of us miss the deadline, sometimes. Hence, it’s best to start an SIP in a tax savings fund (equity-linked saving scheme) so that every month, a fixed sum gets invested and we don’t have to bother with the last minute scrambling. I will switch my money on time We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again. If we wish to switch our investments, from one fund house to another, then we should do so at the earliest. Usually, there’s no problem if we switch within the same fund house. The money gets transferred automatically. The problem arises when we aim to switch from one fund house to another. That’s because the money first comes into our bank account. We, then, have to fill up the form of the second fund house where we wish to now invest. And here’s where some of us change our minds after seeing the money in our bank accounts; we may want to spend it. That’s dangerous and it throws our financial planning out of gear.

Govt reports 40 percent hike in cyber crimes in India The government has observed an annual increase of more than 40 percent in cyber crime in India over the past few years, says a new report. Various nefarious activities such as hacking, phishing, spamming, transmission of unauthorized content as well as credit card and banking fraud are included in the list. A big percentage of these cyber attacks are said to stem from the US, Europe, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Brazil, Turkey, Algeria and the UAE. It’s not always easy to trace and bring to book the

perpetrators of these crimes since they hide behind proxy servers and use various methods to conceal their footprints. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, has noted that there’s a valid need to monitor cyber activities in India owing to terror groups like ISIS which can use the web to groom victims. The Economic Times points to statistics by the National Cyber Records Bureau which puts the total number of cases registered under the Information Technology Act in 2011, 2012 and 2013 at 1791, 2876 and 4356, correspondingly.

Comedy and horror Rajkummar Rao thrilled to go hand in hand see Bradley Cooper on stage

Comedy is an essential part of a horror film. Strange as it may sound, it has become an imperative element of Telugu films. Telugu audience is so hooked to comedy that even a horror thriller is not accepted without a funny face or a funny line. Horror movies sprang a surprise. A small budget Premakatha Chitram with Sudheer Babu and Nandita in the lead and directed by Prabhakar Reddy became a surprise hit in 2013, collecting around Rs.18 crores. That year, a dubbed version of Tamil film Pizza set the ball rolling. While in Tamil Nadu 2014 ended with Pisaasu, in the Telugu speaking states, a small budget film Geetanjali set

the cash registers ringing and collected approximately ten crore, despite mixed reviewsin mid-2014. In both Premakatha Chitram and Geetanjali comedians played an important role, in the former it was Saptagiri and the latter had the comedian Srinivas Reddy himself as a hero and a group of small time comedians to complement him. The writer of a horror film in Telugu has to weave in a situational comedy that gels with the plot perfectly, the dialogues for the comedian have to be hilarious and often, loud. He need not have a sophisticated approach but must meet the demand to maintain a balance between both horror and

comedy. Apart from these successful horrorcomedies, there have been serious films too that stuck to the tone and were loyal to the genre. Be it Bhoo or the recent The End and the last film Chandrakala, they managed to get noticed and fetched immense publicity by social media. Chandrakala, a dubbed film is doing well at the B and C centres and The End starring newcomers even made some profit. Now Premakatha Chitram is being remade as Darling with Tamil music director G V Prakash in the lead. In 2015 we will see the sequel of Geetanjali by the same director Raaj Kiran, Premakatha Chitram's sequel is likely to strike us a Pelli Katha Chitram.
