Agency News: Amravati The Amravati police on Monday arrested former Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Dr Anil Bonde along with a few other party members in connection with the violence over the weekend. The police are also on the lookout for another BJP leader Praveen Pote, who has been missing from Amravati. A senior officer told The Indian Express that the latest arrests were in connection with the rioting that took place on Saturday in the Kotwali area of Amravati when BJP called a bandh. Around 6,000 of its party members and allied organisations like Bajrang Dal had taken to the streets to execute the bandh on Saturday. It led to two shops belonging to the minority communities being torched. IFSCA panel on ship leasing suggests changes to SEZ & GST laws Sunvilla News: Ahmedabad

Pointing out that the existing “legal and regulatory framework” related to ship leasing and financing activities in India is “less favourable” than global hubs such as Panama, Dubai and Singapore, a report submitted to the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) at GIFT City has recommended changes in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Act, 2005, to make the sector attractive. “Financing and insuring ships is a specialised area. Indian agencies (banks, insurance companies, pension funds, alternate capital and others) lack exposure to maritime finance and insurance and hence, tend to be non-risk takers or impose lengthy, time-consuming procedures,” states a report by a committee

constituted by IFSCA on June 24, accessed by this paper. It pointed out how costs of financing — borrowing and insurance (hull, cargo, and protection and indemnity) — are unfavourably high in India compared to international counterparts notably in London and Singapore that offer highly competitive rates. “Besides, India’s tax regime, by and large, are not encouraging to the shipping industry and are not on par with tax regimes of Singapore, Malta, Cyprus and Panama.

complete lockdown to control local emissions. However, such a step would be meaningful if it is implemented across the NCR areas in neighbouring states. Given Delhi’s compact size, a lockdown would have limited impact on the air quality regime,” says the affidavit.“We are ready to consider this step if the same is mandated for the entire NCR areas by the Government of India or by the Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas.

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Rahul One Of Modi’s Biggest Assets To Snipe At Opposition

Judging by its huge defeat in West Bengal and its 50 per cent strike rate in the recent national by-elections, the BJP’s prospects for next year’s assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur appear a little shaky. But at the BJP’s recent national executive, Prime Minister Narendra Modi exuded confidence that the party will continue to be in a commanding position. He pointed out that the BJP has an army of committed cadres, while other parties revolve around just one family. (It is another matter that today, the BJP and the government revolve entirely around Modi.) More than Modi’s speech, it was the unguarded remark of Prashant Kishor, Mamata Banerjee campaign handler, which provided the reality check to those who assume that Narendra Modi’s days are numbered because of bad governance, ugly efforts at communal polarisation, a disturbing disregard for democratic norms and blatant manipulation of constitutional bodies and investigative agencies to settle scores with opponents. Kishor’s assessment that the BJP will remain at the centre of Indian politics and will not go anywhere for the next many decades was a candid analysis by a seasoned and successful pollster, who is now in the rival camp. His comments were made in the context of Rahul Gandhi’s blithe assumption that it is just a matter of time before the voters throw out Modi. In the past, swings for and against a political party were a recurring phenomenon in bi-polar contests, since antiincumbency was a major factor in voter trends. Kishor comprehends what Rahul still fails to grasp. Modi, ably assisted by Amit Shah, has radically altered therules of the game in India’s politics. The laidback gentlemanly Westminster style ofgovernment, the model at the time of Independence, has virtually withered away. The BJP isnot a party that springs to life only during the poll season. It is a ruthless, full-time electionmachine, crushing those who stand in its way and uprooting all dissent, even within its ownranks. Political considerations contribute to most important government decisions. And if thegovernment has messed up in demonetisation or managing the coronavirus pandemic, it hascompensated by delivering on a number of schemes of individual benefit to the averageIndian voter, whether building millions of toilets or providing running water.True, the BJP may lose in some of the forthcoming state assembly polls, but the party’sfocus is mainly on Uttar Pradesh. The BJP will leave no stone unturned to ensure that itretains control of India’s largest state, even if this entails elevating the status of ChiefMinister Yogi Adityanath, no favourite of BJP’s master strategist Shah, and about whomeven Modi has reservations, for not displaying the subservience expected from model BJPCMs.The ruling party has yet another trump card. Rahul Gandhi may be the BJP’s favouritewhipping boy when it comes to lampooning the opposition, but he is also one of Modi’sbiggest assets. The BJP believes that with the Gandhis as the main opposition, Modi is assured a comfortable run. Recent events in Punjab, where the Gandhis totally misjudged the maverick Navjot Singh Sidhu and unnecessarily humiliated an old warhorse likeAmarinder Singh, reinforce the perception that the family today is unqualified to lead theCongress. Incidentally, the Grand Old Party was not founded by the Gandhis’ ancestors asmost of our younger generation assume, but by stalwarts of the freedom movement such asAllan Octavian Hume and Dadabhai Naoroji.During her confrontation with the UP police after the recent farmers’ tragedy in LakhimpuriKheri, Priyanka Gandhi”s s feisty, theatrical spirit dominated the news cycle for a few days. But are such well-publicised histrionics and expressions of sympathy for the downtrodden, adefining characteristic of her legendary grandmother Indira Gandhi, enough to save theCongress today?Priyanka has complete charge of the Congress’s UP wing, but with little remaining of theparty organisation at the grassroots, it makes better sense to join forces with otheropposition parties, most notably the Samajwadi Party, rather than sniping at them.Far from responding to the growing rumbles in the party led by the G-23 letter writers at theCWC meet last month, the Gandhis assumed they could cock a snook at the legitimatedemand for a fulltime president. Rahul Gandhi made clear that he would formally take overthe reins of the party only at a time of his choosing. Meanwhile, the drift in the partycontinues. His mother Sonia Gandhi remains notional interim president though her healthdoes not permit her to play an active role. Rahul may wax eloquent on the - Kapilkumar M. Stubble Burning Contributes Only 10% To Air Pollution, Supreme Court Told Agency News: New Delhi The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that stubble burning is not the major cause of worsening air quality in Delhi and northern states, as it contributes to only 10 per cent of the pollution. To bring down pollution, the central government suggested three steps to the Supreme Court which include the introduction of an odd-even vehicle scheme, a ban on trucks’ entry in Delhi, and the severest lockdown. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court concluded that major culprits of air pollution

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) nabbed three persons with 120 kg heroin, approximately worth Rs 600 crore in the international market. The trio was arrested from Zinzuda village near Navlakhi port in Gulf of Kutch. The operation was carried out by the ATS along with the local police. In a tweet, Gujarat Home minister Harsh Sanghavi wrote, “Another achievement of Gujarat Police. Gujarat Police is leading from the front to eliminate the drugs. Gujarat ATS has nabbed around 120 kg

of drugs.”At a press conference on Monday morning, Gujarat DGP Ashish Bhatia said the ATS had received an intelligence input on Sunday, based on which they raided an under-construction house in Zinzuda village in Morbi and recovered 120 kg of heroin worth Rs 600 crore in the international market. The consigment had been sent by Pakistan resident Zahid Bashir Baloch who is wanted by the DRI in a 2019 heroin seizure case, Bhatia said.It had been hidden in the coastal area near Salaya in Devbhumi Dwarka and was moved to Zinzuda. The contraband was delivered

to Mukhtar Hussein and Shamsuddin Saiyyed in the last week of October.Bhatia added that the consignment was intended to be transported to an African country. However, the accused, now arrested, decided to sell it in India, he said. He explained that the Indian route is preferred by smugglers because it is cheap, short and allows for hiding their illegal activities as there are around 25,000 fishing boats plying in the area.A few months ago, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had seized 3,000 kg of heroin worth approximately Rs 21,000 crore from Mundra port.
