Agency News: New Delhi Modern technologies have the potential to be used as instruments of conflict and domination, and democratic nations should work together on cryptocurrency to ensure it does not end up in the wrong hands, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday India has created a “robust

framework of data protection, privacy and security”, and is using data to empower people within a democratic framework with strong guarantees of individual rights, Modi said in a virtual keynote address at the Sydney Dialogue organised by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. Describing technology and data as “new weapons”, Modi

said: “Technology has already become a major instrument of global competition and key to shaping the future international order...The biggest strength of democracy is openness. At the same time, we should not allow a few vested interests to misuse this openness.” While it is essential for democracies to work together to develop governance standards and

norms consistent with democratic values, this process should recognise national rights and promote the larger public good, he said. “Take cryptocurrency

or Bitcoin for example. It is important that all democratic nations work together on this and ensure it does not end up in wrong hands, which can spoil our youth,” he said. Modi added, “We are at a historic moment of choice – whether all the wonderful powers of technology of our age will be instruments of cooperation or conflict, coercion or choice, domination or development, oppression or opportunity. SUNVILLA SAMACHAR China To Bargain As An Equal Global Power With United States

The McKinsey Co. report on the national wealth of the first ten countries of the world could not have come at a better time than the past Monday for the Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The long-awaited virtual summit between China and US was taking place between him and the US President Joe Biden and by that time China surpassed the USA in national wealth, defying all the earlier projections made by the World Bank, or Morgan Stanley which indicated a timeline of minimum 2035. By the end of 2020, China’s national wealth totalled $120 trillion as against $90 trillion of USA. The gap is quite wide. This emergence of China as the number one country in terms of economic strength had its impact on the summit and the analysts in US media have already noted. President Biden did not give the impression of an aggressive China-baiter as he maintained in the course of earlier policy announcement. A confident Xi Jinping discussed the global issues with élan in the three-and-half hour summit and it is good for global peace and prosperity that both sidesexpressed a firm desire to go ahead in discussing the vexed issues in a mood ofcooperation. The geopolitical reality is that the economic strength gives the power to bargain in theinternational diplomatic arena. China has been consistently increasing its national wealthsince year 2000 despite some hiccups in the last decade and its economic wealth went upfrom only $7 trillion in 2000 to $ 120 trillion in 2020, during this 20-year period, US economicwealth went up from $45 trillion to $90 trillion. This means that there was phenomenalgrowth in Chinese economy during the last two decades, during which the US economy, despite its neoliberal agenda, could not match. The US economy faced severe setbackstwice during this period and the most-affected years were after 2008 financial crisis. For the Chinese supreme leader who is the general secretary of the Chinese CommunistParty, the report has been released only a few days after the conclusion of the 19th sessionof the central committee of the Communist Party of China. At the session, President Xipresented his vision for the coming period of the Chinese economy and polity focusing muchon his theme of ensuring ‘common prosperity’ for the Chinese citizens, who are the victimsof widening inequality that has engulfed the Chinese society despite substantialimprovement in the living standards of the people. This ‘common prosperity’ has to be achieved in the next ten years and already, as a follow-up of this theme, actions have been taken by the Chinese government against manypractices in the tech industry, which contributed to the growth of both hundreds of billionairesand also widening of inequality. As a part of the drive, the state-owned enterprises (SOEs),which are the mainstay of the Chinese economy, have been given a fresh boost. Moreover,a lot of entrepreneurs from the private industry are being drawn into the SOEs to project thatas a model This is not in the form of any severe sanctions on the private tech industry. What Xi is doingmeans calibrating the growth process in the tech industry for doing away with the excessesthat have been detected in the recent years. The crackdown on big entrepreneurs has beenlimited and this in no way, is going to hit the private tech industry in China. As Chinawatchers see it, Xi has ensured the place of the Chinese economy at the top by 2020 andnow he is focusing more on distributing the fruits of that to the comparatively marginalisedsections of the Chinese society. This is a new phase in Chinese socialism which will continue over the current decade. Inorder to guarantee that transition, the CCP general secretary has decentralised economicdecision-making to serve the interests of the SOEs better. The McKinsey report hasrevealed that 60 per cent of the global net worth is stored in real estate and twothirds of thewealth is owned by the richest 10 per cent in both China and the US. The ChineseCommunist Party, which still swears by Marxism, and in the recent years, has started moredetailed study of Marxian policies and programmes in the party schools, can not allow asituation, where the richest ten per cent holds two-thirds of the wealth, to continue.Despite massive opposition and popular protests from the climate- and capitalism-consciousyoungsters, the USA still remains a capitalist country, and large income inequality is seen asa natural consequence of individual entrepreneurial spirit. Yet, how can China, a - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara socialisteconomy -- at least Chinese.

Agency News: New Delhi

The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the Centre to disinvest its remaining 29.5 stakes in Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) and directed the CBI to register a regular case into its 2002 disinvestment.A bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud said HZL had ceased to be a government company after the initial disinvestment and that the government was only a shareholder and therefore free to sell its shares. “There is no challenge to the disinvestment which took place in 1991- 1992
