SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Food Crisis For Children Could Become Worse During Pandemic

The ongoing COVID-19 disruptions could make the food crisis for children worse, especially at a time when there have been little sign of improvement in the last ten years. They were‘Fed to Fail?’ as the title of the new UNICEF report released ahead of the UN Food SystemsSummit suggests. Only half of the world’s children aged 6-23 months are being fed theminimum recommended number of meals a day, while just a third consume the minimumnumber of food groups they need to thrive.Children are not fed enough of the right foods at the right time. Currently, 27 per cent ofchildren aged 6-8 months are not fed solid food. Among children aged 6-23 months, 48 per cent are not fed with the minimum meal frequency, and 71 per cent do not have minimally diverse diets.Policies and programmes to improve young children’s diets are not prioritized, and are being further eroded by the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said. It found that No country has acomprehensive set of policies, legal measures and programmes to improve young children’s diets.Millions of families are struggling to provide their children with nutritious food to support theirgrowth and development. They are even struggling to find and afford nutritious foods for theirchildren. Shortage in national supplies, seasonal scarcities and poor road infrastructureconstrain physical access to nutritious foods. Rising poverty, inequality, conflict, climaterelated disasters, and health emergencies are all contributing to the nutrition crisis, the reportemphasized. It has also been found that COVID-19 pandemic is affecting how families feedtheir children. According to a survey about half of the families in many countries have beenforced to reduce nutritious food purchases. As a result, the percentage of childrenconsuming the minimum recommended number of food groups fell by a third in 2020,compared to 2018. Children’s diets are constrained even by social, cultural, and gender barriers. Mothersremain primarily responsible for the feeding and care of young children. Yet, mother’s statusin patriarchal norms and unequal power lacks autonomy to decide what food are purchasedor fed to their children. There is mounting time pressure on mothers, and many turn to theconvenience of processed and fast foods to feed their children. Unhealthy processed foodsand drinks are widely accessible and heavily marketed. In several countries including India,it was found that one in three children were fed at least one processed or ultra-processedfood or drink daily. These products are highly available, cheap and convenient, and someare marketed with misleading nutrition claims because legislation to prevent inappropriatemarketing is missing, inadequate or poorly implemented.Children living in rural areas or from poorer households are significantly more likely to be fedpoor diets, compared to their urban or wealthier peers. In 2020, for example, the proportionof children fed the minimum number of recommended food groups was twice as high in urban areas (39 per cent) than in rural areas (23 per cent), the findings revealed. Poorfeeding patterns have persisted throughout the last decade, the study has found. The report has warned that poor diets can scar children for life. An insufficient intake ofnutrients found in vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish and meat at an early age, puts children at riskof poor brain development, weak learning, low immunity, increased infections and, potentially, death. Children under the age of two are most vulnerable to all forms ofmalnutrition, including stunting, wasting, micronutrient deficiencies, and overweight andobesity.“The report’s findings are clear: When the stakes are highest, millions of young children arebeing fed to fail,” UNICEF Executive Director Ms. Henrietta Fore said. “While we have knownthis for years, there has been little progress on providing the right kind of nutritious and safefoods for the young.UNICEF has estimated that globally, more than half of children under the age of 5 withwasting are younger than 2 years of age. This amounts to around 23 million children. Theprevalence of stunting increases rapidly between 6 months and two years, as children’s dietsfail to keep pace with their growing nutritional needs. The report emphasized that progress in all regions is possible with investment. It found thatin Latin America and the Caribbean almost two thirds (62 per cent) of children below 24 - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara months, are fed a minimally.

‘Easy to say no to Pakistan. Nobody would do that to India as money talks’

Agency News: New Delhi

Australia batter Usman Khawaja said it is comparatively easier for teams to pull out from Pakistan and Bangladesh tours citing security reasons. The lefthander said teams would not withdraw from tours to India because the ‘money talks.’ Khawaja’s comments came after New Zealand and England withdrew from their tours to Pakistan recently. New Zealand Cricket were forced to leave Pakistan after their government issued a security

alert hours before the start of the first ODI at Rawalpindi. A few days later, England too called off their tour to Pakistan but in this case, security was not one of the major reasons. ECB said players’ mental health due to all the recent developments was one of the main reasons behind the pull out. “I feel it’s very easy for players and organisations to say no to Pakistan, because it’s Pakistan,” Khawaja said in Brisbane. “I think the same thing would apply too, if it were Bangladesh. But nobody would say no to India, if

they’re in the same situation. Money talks, we all know that, and that’s probably a big part of it,” Khawaja, who was born in Pakistan but moved to Australia at the age of five, said. The stylish left-hander, who has played in the recent editions of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), said there was no reason why teams shouldn’t travel to Pakistan. “They keep proving time and time again through their tournaments that they’re a safe place to play cricket. I think there’s no reason why we shouldn’t go back,” he said.

Richa Chadha spoke about entering the digital space at the right time, the backlash she faced for playing diverse characters and her new production house Pushing Buttons Studios, which she started with her real-life partner and actor Ali Faza

Richa Chadha pivoted towards the digital space when the new medium was still finding its feet in India. She says she was also cautioned against it, told that it was a step back. “That time I was told it’s going to be your demotion, as who goes to web after doing films. And now look at how things have turned out,” Richa said. The actor was among the first Bollywood stars to turn heads on the OTT with Amazon Prime Video’s Inside Edge (2017), which is now gearing up for its this season soon. Four years down the line, Richa is a regular across mediums with diverse projects and characters. “What’s interesting in a web show is that the character gets to grow with you. Like in Inside Edge there were some people who said they wished all the characters got more breathing space. So it is possible to spend more time to develop the character, which I really enjoy,” Richa’s latest release, also a web show titled Candy on Voot Select has her playing a no-nonsense cop. She called her character Ratna Sankhwar, ‘a layered woman’. “She has a past, she’s been suspended,. She’s a single mom of a special child. She isn’t trying to ruffle any feathers. She just wants to survive. I was trying to look at it in terms of actual people who work in the forces and how hard their lives are,” the actor spoke about playing the part. From going super glamorous in Cabaret and Shakeela to absolutely deglam in Masaan, Sarbjit and Love Sonia, the spectrum of Richa Chadha‘s roles are noteworthy. But the actor says it hasn’t been a cakewalk due to varied reactions coming her way from all sections of the audience. “I’ve got negative reviews even for Masaan and then I’ve got a positive review for films where I don’t expect anything to be written about my character.
