ENGLISH DAILY MORNING REPUTED NEWS PAPER, AHMEDABAD EDITION Editor : Kapilkumar M. Hirpara

Short News An Expert Explains: Why hacking EVMs are tough and defy science New Delhi : In the hue and cry and the debate around claims of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) hacking, the voices of technical experts remain silent and what dominates is the shallow opinion of some selfproclaimed experts, politicians and political experts. As EVM hacking is in public focus again, it is important to look at some of the fundamental technical elements of EVM hacking. There are two ways by which an electronic device can be hacked: wired and wireless. In order to hack a machine, the best way is to establish a wired link with its control unit, which is the brain of the device.

IAF worry: In next two years, only 26 fighter squadrons, short by 16 New Delhi : In another two years, the IAF will be left with an alarmingly low 26 squadrons of fighter aircraft against an authorisation of 42 — even if all the scheduled supplies, including of Rafale and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, are completed on time. Around the same time, the Pakistan Air Force will have 25 fighter squadrons while China’s PLA Air Force is estimated to have the capacity to bear 42 squadrons against India. news agancy has reviewed official documents, which show that while the IAF currently has 30 fighter squadrons, the number will slip to 26 in 2021 and 2022. By then, six squadrons of the old Soviet-era MIG aircraft will be decommissioned, and only one squadron of the French Rafale and another of the HALmanufactured LCA Tejas will be additionally inducted.

Minority panel members want madrasa docs to be recorded in Hindi too, write to Yogi Adityanath

Lucknow : Three members of the State Minority Commission on Tuesday wrote to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath requesting him to instruct all recognised madrasas to record all educational details in Hindi apart from Urdu. In the letter, the commission members — Rumana Siddiqui, Sardar Parvinder Singh and Kunwar Iqbal Haider— claimed that during their recent visits to madrasas in different districts, they found “several anomalies” in the registers. Rumana Siddiqui, who was the president of state BJP’s minority wing, said, “Urdu translators are there in the commission, but they do not accompany us when we go somewhere.”

Snatch voting rights, govt jobs of people with more than 2 kids: Ramdev gns, New Delhi

gns, Chennai Terming the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rollout as the biggest reform, Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said the GST was part of a "systemic reform" pursued by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi that facilitated India to become "a bright spot for investors." "India is the brightest spark and shining globally ..the growth with fiscal prudence is the reason behind with which the economy is managed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it a point that systemic reforms were done in such a way that India's growth potential was realised fully and these reforms are being taken up with courage by the Modi government," she said while speaking at the inaugural of the second edition of the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet (GIM) here on Wednesday.

Yog guru Ramdev, who has always expressed concern over controlling population in the country, has advised that the government should snatch away the voting rights of people who go for more than two children. Citing the rising population of India as reason for need of such actions, Ramdev at an event in Aligarh on Wednesday, said: "To control population of the country, voting rights, jobs and treatment facilities should be taken away from people who give birth to more than two kids and whether they are Hindus or Muslims. Then only the population will be controlled." While inaugurating Patanjali garment in Aligarh,

On Monday, a US-based self-proclaimed 'cyber expert' from India, Syed Shuja, claimed that 2014 Lok Sabha polls were "rigged" and that EVMs can be hacked.

EVM hacking: CEC says intimidation will not result in start of ballot papers era New Delhi

Amid allegations that electronic voting machines (EVMs) were tampered in 2014 General Election, Chief Election Commissioner of India Sunil Arora Thursday said that there was no question of going back to the ballot era and the Election Commission (EC) will not be intimidated, bullied or coerced into giving up EVMs. “I would like to make it very clear that we are not going back to the era of ballot papers. We will continue to use EVMs & VVPATs. We are open to any criticism and feedback from any stakeholder including political parties. At the same time, we are not going to be intimidated, bullied or coerced into giving up these and start era of ballot papers,” news agency quoted Arora as saying.Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar

Prasad Tuesday called the allegations of tampering electronic voting machines (EVMs) in 2014 Lok Sabha polls a “political stunt” and a “Congress-sponsored conspiracy” to “defame” India. Prasad pinned the allegation on Congress and said the party has already started looking for an “alibi” ahead of its “certain defeat” in the Lok Sabha polls.

Party insiders said that after the tri-state triumph, leaders had urged Rahul Gandhi to do “something” in UP. He is said to have assured them of a “440-Volt jolt.”

Priyanka joins mainstream politics: X-factor in 2019, Congress signals to UP voter it is risking its big trump card New Delhi

For the record, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra routinely denied any interest in a role larger than helping brother Rahul and mother Sonia work in their Lok Sabha seats Amethi and Rae Bareli. But with SP and BSP keeping it out of the alliance and the BJP announcing 10% quota for the unreserved poor, the Congress had to think out of the box — to stay in the game. Party insiders said that after the tri-state triumph, leaders had urged Rahul Gandhi to do “something” in UP. He is said to have assured them of a “440-Volt jolt.” How electrifying Priyanka’s induction will be is anybody’s guess but two things are clear: One, her entry has told the UP voter that the Congress is serious about its fight in the state, against the BJP and in the face of the SP-BSP combine, so serious that it has risked its biggest trump card; two, it has told the voter outside UP that the stakes for Rahul have gone up with another Gandhi at the Congress’s high table. For the Congress, eastern UP isn’t exactly friendly terrain. Of the 21 seats it had won in 2009, 15 were from eastern UP but in 2014, it drew a blank except for the

two family seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Varanasi and Yogi Adityanath’s Gorakhpur will be under her watch. Many in the party feel that as Sonia Gandhi, battling ill health, prepares to withdraw, her 47-year-old daughter is the one to step in to connect to women and the youth. Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was in charge of the state, had, in fact, suggested that she should be made the general secretary in charge of UP during the last Assembly elections way back in 2017. “But I think they wanted to do it an appropriate time,” Azad told The Indian Express. “The people of UP know her well…the goodwill of the Gandhi family, her resemblance with Indira Gandhi, all counts…she is a big crowd puller.” Azad admitted Priyanka’s entry will considerably ease Rahul’s campaign burden.

Ramdev, a bachelor himself told media that such people should not be allowed to contest elections, denied admissions in government schools, do not seek treatment in a government hospital and not allowed to take government jobs. This was not the first time when the yog guru had made such statement. In November last year, he said that people like him, who do not get married, should be accorded special honours. “In this country, people like me, who never get married, should receive a special honour. Those who get married and produce more than two children should be denied voting rights," Ramdev said at an event. 'Those who get married and produce more than two children should be denied voting rights,' Ramdev said.

Baramulla

Baramulla, located in the north of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday became the first district in the state to have eliminated all surviving terrorists, according to police. The largest of the 10 districts in the Valley has been one of the hotbeds of terrorism as it adjoins Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and thus offers a strategic location for terrorists to infiltrate into India. Terror attacks and encounter operations by police and security forces were a regular feature here with terror-related incidents being reported from the district nearly on a weekly

basis. "Baramulla has become the first district of Kashmir with no surviving militant as on date. Jammu and Kashmir Police extends its thanks to the local population for all their support in providing a better security environment in the district," Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh said. This development comes hours after three terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in the region on Tuesday. The terrorists have been identified as Suhaib Farooq Akhoon resident of Baramulla, Mohsin Mushtaq Bhat, a resident of Baramulla and Nasir Ahmad Darzi, from Sopore.

Justice AK Sikri withdraws from hearing plea challenging interim CBI chief appointment New Delhi

Days after CJI Ranjan Gogoi recused himself from hearing a plea challenging the appointment of M Nageshwar Rao as the interim CBI chief, Justice AK Sikri Thursday also withdrew from hearing it. The matter will now be heard by a different bench on Friday. “Since I’m rescuing, I cant hear…please understand my position” Justice Sikri told senior advocate Dushyant Dave, who is representing the petitioner. Justice Sikri was present in the January 10 meeting of the high-powered committee which removed CBI chief Alok Verma and appointed Nageswar Rao as the interim director. The case was allotted to Justice AK Sikri after

Nobody can stop us from removing Modi in 2019 LS polls: Rahul Rae Bareli

Escalating his attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday described him as the "symbol of hatred" and said nobody can stop us from removing him in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. On a visit to Rae Bareli, the Lok Sabha constituency of his mother Sonia Gandhi, he again raked up the issues of Rafale, demonetisation, GST, unemployment and farmer loan waivers while targetting Modi. "I want to tell you nothing can be achieved from hatred, it only causes destruction. The meaning of Narendra Modi is hatred. He is the symbol of hatred. We are going to remove him and nobody can stop us," he said while addressing a gathering here. Referring to the removal of Alok Verma as CBI director, Rahul said: "He (Modi) travels around the county and claims to fight against corruption.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi withdrew as he had to attend the high-power selection committee to select the new CBI chief today. The panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to announce Alok Verma’s successor in the agency today. In a 2-1 decision, the selection committee voted to remove Verma over “extremely serious nature of observations made by the CVC against him”. The lone dissenter was Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader

of Congress in Lok Sabha. Justice Sikri had been nominated by the CJI to participate in that meeting of the committee because the latter had been on the bench that reinstated Verma, setting aside the Centre’s order of sending him on forced leave. Justice Sikri, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, courted controversy after media reported about his selection as a member of the Londonbased Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal (CSAT). “Pained” over the connection being drawn over his nomination to the CSAT with the decision to transfer Verma, despite there being “no correlation” between the two, Sikri later turned it down, news agancy reported first.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered an FIR in connection with a case pertaining to alleged transactions between Nupower Renewables Pvt Ltd, controlled by Deepak Kochhar, husband of the former CEO of ICICI Bank Chanda Kochhar, and Venugopal Dhoot-controlled Videocon Group. The CBI is conducting raids at Videocon’s offices in Mumbai and Aurangabad and Nupower Renewables and Supreme Energy Pvt Ltd’s office at Nariman point in Mumbai. As first reported by news agancy, Dhoot provided crores of rupees to a firm he had set up with Deepak Kochhar and two

relatives six months after the Videocon group got Rs 3,250 crore as loan from ICICI Bank in 2012. The amount was part of the Rs 40,000-crore loan that Videocon group secured from a consortium of 20 banks led by SBI. Dhoot gave Rs 64 crore in 2010 through a fully owned entity to NuPower Renewables Pvt Ltd (NRPL), which he had

set up with Deepak Kochhar and two of his relatives. He transferred proprietorship of the company to a trust owned by Deepak Kochhar for Rs 9 lakh, six months after he received the loan from ICICI Bank. Almost 86 per cent of the Rs 3,250 crore loan (Rs 2,810 crore) remains unpaid. The Videocon account was declared an NPA in 2017.

The 10% solution will not solve the job crisis in the country

In a surprise move, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced 10% reservation for economically weaker sections among general caste groups. Within a week, the government pushed the bill in Parliament and it was approved without any resistance from the opposition. Socially disadvantaged and marginalized groups have been entitled to reservation in government jobs and higher educational institutions for some time now. But this has not stopped the demand for reservation among the excluded groups either through inclusion in existing categories or as additional reservation over and above the 49.5% ceiling fixed by a Constitution bench of Supreme Court. Recent years have seen large-scale agitations by powerful groups such as Jats, Marathas and Patels for such reservations. Even though state and central governments have often yielded by legislating reservation for these groups, they have been struck down by the judiciary. Though the fate of the current bill is yet to be decided, with the matter pending in the highest court, there is every likelihood that this will be struck down. The fact that no major political party came out in opposition except some regional parties also implies that there is general acceptance to such a move. Although the bill has now become law with the President giving his approval to the bill, questions on what the law will achieve and whether it will serve the purpose for which it has been enacted remains unanswered. Political compulsions behind such a move are no different from those faced by other governments which attempted the same. The fundamental problem remains the lack of adequate quantity of jobs in the economy. This discontent and frustration with the lack of jobs is also a result of worsening of existing jobs, particularly regular jobs. Recent decades have seen a sharp deterioration in the quality of jobs in both public and private sectors. Data from Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) clearly points out that the level of contractualization among manufacturing jobs increased from 19% in 1999-2000 to 34% of all workers by 2012-13. Most of these are informal jobs without social security and having poor working conditions. It is this which has put a high premium on government jobs, which, despite weakening of social security provisions and increasing contractual nature of jobs, remain the desired jobs. Newspaper headlines of 25 million people applying for 90,000 railway jobs and 3.7 million applying for 12,000 Gujarat government jobs highlight this preference. It is also not surprising to read about doctors, engineers and highly qualified youth applying for the lowest level of government jobs. As against this, the reality is that the absolute number of government jobs has declined in the last two decades. Clearly, reservation for general castes does nothing to address this imbalance, which has gone from bad to worse in the last three decades. The minuscule number of new jobs is not even sufficient to replace retirees from government jobs. In any case, these are no substitutes for the problem of worsening of job quality and informal- - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara isation of the existing workforce. Editor

According to reports on USWeekly.com, the new mom explained to host Ellen DeGeneres that her son is “getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the morning,” and recounted an unpleasant memory where she dropped her son off at school and explained, I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me. I didn’t love that one.” The Oscar winner, who’s been married to businessman Adam Schulman since 2012, has had other bad experiences with booze, she can’t remember Matthew McConaughey and wife Camila Alves giving her a tour of the “best rums of the island” after she arrived in Mauritius to shoot the new film Serenity with the actor.

Irina Shayk gushes about motherhood los angeles

Irina Shayk is one proud mother. In an interview with W Magazine, the 33-year-old couldn’t help but gush over motherhood and how important it is to her to be a mom. “I always say that being a mom is one of the greatest things in the world,” she said, adding, “I don’t think it’s changed my life. It did change in a way to make me better. Family is the most important thing in the world.” While parenthood may have changed her, it hasn’t changed the way Shayk dresses. “Sometimes (people) will be like, ‘Oh, she’s a mom and she’s wearing this?’ I’m like, ‘Give me a break, girl.’ We live in the 21st century. Just because you are a mom and you have a baby doesn’t mean you have to change and dress different. Keep expressing yourself and who you are.”She clearly hasn’t let motherhood sway her style since she has flaunted her post-baby body in countless looks since welcoming Lea.

James Anderson strikes late as England peg back West Indies Barbados England picked up four late wickets with the second new ball to turn the first test against West Indies in their favour, leaving the hosts reeling at 264 for eight at stumps on the first day in Barbados on Wednesday. James Anderson tore through West Indies’ middle order in a devastating late spell, while Ben Stokes chimed in to claim tailender Kemar Roach for a duck with the final ball of the day at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. While England selected two spinners in Mooen Ali and Adil Rashid, raising eyebrows by leaving out Stuart Broad, it was Stokes and Anderson who did the damage. Stokes collected two scalps with the old ball, before Anderson struck three times with stumps looming. The veteran first had Roston Chase caught at first slip for 54, before Shane Dowrich (0) spooned a catch to second slip. Anderson then snaffled allrounder Jason Holder caught-and-bowled for five as the large contingent of English fans in the crowd finally found their collective voice.

Amul begins sale of camel milk in select Gujarat markets

SS NEWS, Ahmedabad

Three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi recounted the benefits of “camel milk” at a public event in Anand, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF) on Tuesday announced the launch of “Amul Camel Milk” in select markets

Donald Trump says he’ll give State Fight for gender equality at UN faces tough internal resistance, report says of the Union after shutdown ends Donald Trump conceded that "no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber" and that he was not looking for an alternate option. Washington President Donald Trump said Wednesday night he is postponing his State of the Union address until the partial government shutdown ends, yielding after a weeklong showdown with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Following a high-stakes game of dare and double-dare, Trump conceded that “no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber” and that he was not looking for an alternate option after Pelosi served notice earlier Wednesday that he won’t be allowed to deliver the address to a joint session of Congress next week. Pelosi had taken the step after Trump said he planned to show up in spite of Democratic objections to

the speech taking place with large swaths of the government shut down. Denied that grand venue, Trump promised to come up with some sort of alternative event. The White House scrambled to find a site matching the gravitas of the traditional address from the rostrum of the House to lawmakers from both parties, Supreme Court justices, invited guests and a television audience of millions. “As the Shutdown was going on, Nancy Pelosi asked me to give the State of the Union Address. I agreed,'”Trump tweeted. “She then changed her mind because of the Shutdown, suggesting a later date. This is her prerogative – I will do the Address when the Shutdown is over.”

New York UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has inched up slightly in the eyes of women’s groups who said on Wednesday he has delivered on some promises to make the global organization a feminist institution but faces a major backlash and resistance. The Feminist UN Campaign, a coalition of women’s rights groups, advocates and UN staff, gave him a grade of B-, up from the C+ it gave him a year ago. The coalition launched its report card after the secretary-general said

he would be a feminist leader when he took office two years ago. In that time, the #MeToo campaign against sexual harassment and assault has become a global movement. Guterres has promoted women’s rights and equality publicly, sought gender parity in leadership and rolled out efforts against sexual harassment and genderbased violence, the report said. But an internal backlash and bureaucracy threaten his progress. His efforts to make structural changes have met “considerable resistance” from staff and member states that resist women’s rights, it said.

by Manafort as deliberate attempts to deceive them about his interactions with the Russian citizen, Konstantin Kilimnik, who received the polling data in 2016 as Donald Trump was closing in on the Republican presidential nomination. “Failure of memory is not akin to a false statement,” Manafort’s lawyers said. If the federal judge in Washington who is overseeing the case, Amy Berman Jackson, decides that Manafort intentionally misled the prosecutors working for special counsel

Robert Mueller after agreeing to cooperate with them, she would presumably be less likely to show leniency on March 5, when she is to sentence him on two conspiracy charges. But as a practical matter, Manafort, 69, stood little chance of receiving less than 10 years for those crimes even before prosecutors accused him of breaching his plea agreement by lying to them about his dealings with Kilimnik and other matters. He is also awaiting sentencing for eight other felonies.

Manafort’s lawyers say prosecutors twisted memory lapses as lies

The lawyers argued in a new court filing that the prosecutors had wrongly interpreted honest memory lapses and innocent misstatements by Manafort as deliberate attempts to deceive them about his interactions with the Russian citizen

Moscow

Paul Manafort’s lawyers on Wednesday strongly disputed claims by prosecutors working for the special counsel that Manafort repeatedly lied to them, including about the transfer of campaign polling data to a Russian citizen with ties to Kremlin-run intelligence services in spring 2016. The lawyers argued in a new court filing that the prosecutors had wrongly interpreted honest memory lapses and innocent misstatements
