UDAN: Under latest scheme, 73 proposals awarded to 11 airlines to connect 39 airports New Delhi : The Civil Aviation Ministry announced the results for the third round of bidding under its flagship regional air connectivity scheme UDAN. Under the latest round of the scheme, 73 proposals were awarded to 11 airlines that will connect a total of 39 airports. These include 16 unserved airports, 17 underserved airports and six water aerodromes. The 73 proposals awarded comprise a total 235 routes, which include 46 routes suggested by the Ministry of Tourism. There were 111 bids from 15 airlines for the third version of UDAN, there were 107 unique bids, indicating lack of competition on most routes.
Custodial interrogation of P Chidambaram required, CBI & ED tell HC New Delhi : The CBI and Enforcement Directorate Friday asserted before the Delhi High Court that custodial interrogation of Congress leader and former Union minister P Chidambaram was required in the INX Media cases. The submission was made before Justice Sunil Gaur who was hearing the plea of Chidambaram seeking anticipatory bail in the corruption and money laundering cases relating to the INX Media scandal. The High Court reserved its order and the interim protection from arrest granted to Chidambaram will continue till the decision is passed on his plea for anticipatory bail.

gns, New Delhi Former president Pranab Mukherjee was on Friday conferred with the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. The award was also conferred on Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Nanaji Deshmukh and legendary singer-composer Bhupen Hazarika posthumously. Born on 11 December 1935, Mukherjee served as president between 2012 and 2017. Fondly known as ‘Pranab Da’, he has been a senior leader in the Congress and had held several ministerial portfolios. He was also the finance minister from 2009-2012 under the prime ministership of Manmohan Singh. Having dabbled in politics in 1969, Mukherjee had worked closely with former PM Indira Gandhi, becoming one of her trusted lieutenants.
Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and sitarsurbahar artist Budhaditya Mukherjee are among those who were conferred with the third-highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, this year. Mohanlal is already a Padma Shri awardee. He was presented with the honour in 2001. The actor is also the winner of five National Film Awards. The Raigad collectorate on Friday started demolishing absconding diamantaire Nirav Modi’s sprawling seaside mansion in Kihim in Alibaug, with the administration saying that the bungalow was illegally built and flouted all environmental norms. District Collector Vijay Suryawanshi issued the demolition orders after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) handed over the property situated in neighbouring Raigad district, over 90 kilometres from here, news agancy quoted sources as saying. Raigad Collector Suryawanshi said the bungalow was illegally built and flouted all environmental norms. “We have begun proceedings to demolish all 202 illegal
bungalows in Alibaug and Murud tehsil,” he said. The Bombay High Court had last month said that structures built by Nirav Modi should be demolished if they are illegal. The court was hearing a petition filed by Sambhuraje Yuvakranti, seeking directions to remove the unauthorised constructions carried out within the low tide and high tide area along Alibaug by “wealthy and law-breaking people” who reportedly presented themselves as
agriculturists. Last year, the state government wrote to Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had sealed the fugitive diamantaire’s bungalow, seeking permission to demolish the illegally-built property on Kihim beach. But notifications and acquisitions were made in such a manner that land owners were forced to make distress sale to builders, the FIR alleged.

Mastanocracy: The essence of Bengal politics
Battle for political supremacy in West Bengal has long been a factor of democracy as much as “mastanocracy": when the state turns mastan. Intoxicated not with spirituality, as with the Hindustani root word, but with violence and power as a way of life and livelihood. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah’s speech in Malda on 22 January presaged a continuation of that unlovely tradition. It’s important to take note, as the ratcheting up of rhetoric for imminent Lok Sabha elections this summer will snowball into a confrontation for Bengal’s assembly in early 2021 into a Trinamool Congress (TMC) versus BJP shoot-out. Shah flagged emotional touchpoints among the state’s Hindu population, alluding to how cows wouldn’t be smuggled into Bangladesh from West Bengal were the BJP to come to power. How Hindu refugees would receive citizenship. Cross-border infiltration of Bangladeshis would stop. Payoffs to political-business syndicates would end. And so on. This talk is cheap. To make a dent, let alone win, Shah and his party know the BJP will need to appropriate not just the propaganda platform, but also the political infrastructure. The BJP and its ultra-right allies have been preparing the ground. The ruling TMC won’t yield ground without a fight. In Bengal that can literally mean: fighting. By most accounts, “mastanocracy" became set in stone during the second United Front government, a coalition of major and minor left-wing parties between February 1969 and July 1970. (That was also the time the political-action verb, gherao, took life.) Political masters began to use goons (mastans) as a means towards an end. From then till 1972, which included a short-lived Congress government and President’s rule, it was as if the bhadralok (literally, the gentle folk) had finally come of age as the Borgias. Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, leader Jyoti Basu cut his leadership teeth during that period of scrum, which also included as a violent sideshow the burgeoning Naxalbari movement. Congress leaders like Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi and Somen Mitra also came from the scrum along with proven leaders like Subrato Mukherjee. Mukherjee once told the scholar Atul Kohli that he played “an important role in the Youth Congress since 1969" when there was “tremendous violence throughout the state"; and Congress took on left and ultra-left forces in a similar fashion. Mastans matured as political factors during the Congress rule of 1972-77. The chronicler Sajal Basu wrote colourfully of it in one of his studies on the violence of those years: “Political dependence on these rowdy cadres has precipitated a situation of Mastanocracy." The mastan moved steadily from pawn to power broker in what he termed the chessboard of politics. Some say “mastanocracy" truly evolved during the reign of Jyoti Basu at the head of a CPM-led Left Front coalition that began in June 1977. He demitted office in November 2000, leaving behind a de-industrialized, economically chaotic wasteland that pushed several generations of the state’s vast professional talent pool to seek work and life elsewhere. However, he oversaw a massive land reform exercise, an act that earned his party—and his successor, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee—a political base that altogether lasted - Kapilkumar M. The Gujarat forest department has started relocating crocodiles from two ponds on the Sardar Sarovar Dam premises on the Narmada river to enable authorities to start a seaplane service at the Statue of Unity, reported news agancy on Friday. There are close to 500 mugger, or marsh, crocodiles (Crocodylus palustris) in the ponds. These animals are among the most endangered species and fall under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act.
