Short News Bulandshahr violence: Mobile phone of killed cop recovered
Bulandshahr: The Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday reportedly recovered the mobile phone of policeman Subodh Kumar from the house of main accused Prashant Natt, who had allegedly shot down the policeman on December 3 in Bulandshahr. Atul Srivastav, Superintendent of Police (SP) City, said, “As per information received from sources, an operation was conducted to recover the mobile of the deceased policeman Subodh Kumar. His phone was recovered from the main accused Prashant Natt’s house.” The search for the pistol is still underway, he added. Inspector Kumar was killed on December 3, 2018, in violence that flared up after carcasses of cattle were apparently found in a forest close to a police post in Uttar Pradesh.
Women prowess mesmerises crowd at 70th R-Day parade on Rajpath
New Delhi: Women power was on full display during the 70th Republic Day parade on Rajpath on Saturday with several Navy and Army contingents being led by them and a woman officer exhibiting stunts on bike. The all-women Assam Rifles contingent created history this year by participating for the first time in a Republic Day parade. Contingents of the Navy, India Army Service Corps and a unit of Corps of Signals (transportable satellite terminal) were all led by women officers. Capt Shikha Surabhi from the Corps of Signals became the first woman to perform bike stunts, alongside her male teammates as part of daredevils, a major attraction every Republic Day.

Ayodhya hearing delayed: Judge unavailable, SC not to hear case on January 29
New Delhi : The Supreme Court Sunday further delayed the hearing of Ram Janmbhoomi case, stating that the matter won’t be taken up on January 29 due to the non-availability of Justice S A Bobde. The apex court had on Friday reconstituted the five-judge bench hearing the dispute by including Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Abdul Nazeer in the case along with Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Besides the trio, Justices S A Bobde and D Y Chandrachud were also supposed to hear the matter. Justice N V Ramana, who was earlier a part of the bench, was excluded from the bench.

How governments use job transfers to punish
Renaming places has been a notable passion of the National Democratic Alliance government. Roads have been renamed after national heroes and cities sought to be returned to names from the glorious past. Indeed, one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s last executive orders of 2018 was to rename three islands of Andaman and Nicobar, one of them, Ross Island, after independence icon Subhash Chandra Bose. The Andamans are infamous for their British Raj penal colonies, collectively dubbed Kala Pani (black waters) in Hindi to evoke a sense of a hellish place of no return—the kind of place no one would visit willingly. That word is still in use in India, 70 years after independence, but mainly among government officials, to describe job transfers to the more remote parts of India. Job transfers are a huge matter for governments and their employees, a source of constant worry for employees and apparent satisfaction for governments. One obvious reason is the uneven development of this massive country, which means that you can be living in a bungalow in the centre of a metropolis one day, with your children going to fine schools and find yourself in the boondocks tomorrow with crumbling accommodation, failing schools and no shopping malls. The other, less obvious, reason is that governments tend to wield the matter of transfers cynically, as a tool for punishment, injecting an element of unpredictability into an official’s career. And this, in turn, means that a government official—duty-bound to accept a posting—can spend their entire career fretting about one question alone: where the hell next? A bunch of sleuths belonging to India’s premier investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation, posted back and forth in a farcical series of events, would be forgiven for asking themselves the same question recently. The whole episode has its roots in a system of compromised independence of the CBI, to the point where the agency is often seen as acting on behalf of the ruling political dispensation against opposition politicians. In this case, involving a complex web of accusations and counter-accusations of bribery and graft, two of the seniormost CBI officials were pitted against each other, each having ordered a corruption probe against the other. The government swung into this fist-fight in December, sending both men on leave and divesting them of their powers. The CBI director, Alok Verma (now sacked), who had instituted a probe against special director Rakesh Asthana, would have swallowed hard as he watched his entire investigative team of 10 men transferred out of Delhi. One man was moved to Jabalpur, another to Nagpur. And the sleuth heading the entire probe into Asthana was ordered out to—the irony is quite spectacular—Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman Islands, home to the Raj-era penal colony.In the long list of places where ‘government officials should on no account find themselves to be posted’, Port Blair would figure near the top, along with towns in the remoter regions of the North-East. These are all areas dominated by indigenous tribes (hence, neglected for development schemes). Mumbai Actor Kirti Kulhari says while there's no derth of smart female characters in Bollywood, the industry needs to have wider representation of women on screen, showcasing different facets of them. The actor says Bollywood shouldn't "play safe" when it comes to chronicling stories about women. "I won't say there aren't 'smart' roles for women but the variety is limited. I feel the real representation is not widely available in Bollywood. While there are good roles being written for women and people are taking those up, but there's still so much more to explore," Kirti told news agnacy. "We should go in and get our hands dirty and lets not shy away from really showing and representing the sexual life (of women) or taboo subjects. We are still playing it safe," she added. India’s new foreign investment restrictions for its e-commerce sector, which includes giants such as Amazon.com Inc and Walmartowned Flipkart, could reduce online sales by $46 billion by 2022, according to a draft analysis from global consultants PwC. Under the changes, e-commerce firms in India will from February 1 not be able to sell products via companies in which they have an equity interest or push sellers to sell exclusively on their platforms. Announced in December last year, just months before a general election due by May this year, the rules were seen as an attempt by the Narendra Modi government to appease millions of small traders and shopkeepers, who form a key voter base and say their businesses have been threatened by global online retailers. Industry sources said
the policy would delay or derail some investment plans and push companies such as Amazon and Flipkart to create new, more complex business structures. In a private analysis PwC conducted based on estimates provided by the industry and using publicly available information, it forecast that online retail sales growth, tax collections and job creation would be severely hit if companies changed their business models to comply with the new policy. The draft analysis has not been made public. PwC India, in response to questions on the issue, said it “does not endorse any of these assumptions or conclusions, nor have we conducted any independent study on this”. The analysis produced by PwC showed that the gross-merchandise value of goods sold online could reduce by $800 million from expectations in the current fiscal year, a document claimed.
