Congress leaders were quick to describe the idea of minimum income guarantee a game changer. Chidambaram called Gandhi’s announcement historic which will mark a turning point in the lives of the poor.

Minimum income promise: Party idea radical, marks return to UPA social welfare politics Government switching off channel I financed: Kapil Sibal

gns, New Delhi Rahul Gandhi’s promise of minimum income guarantee may be radical, but the Congress party under him had taken that leap in imagining its version of a welfare state over the last six months to a year leading up to victory in the three Hindi heartland states — Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Monday’s announcement by Rahul, coupled with the promise of a national farm loan waiver, marks a return to a more aggressive UPA politics. The UPA I and II governments had delivered path-breaking social justice schemes including MGNREGA (rural job guarantee), right to food and right to information. NREGA along with the Rs 60,000-crore loan waiver for farmers played a major role in the Congress’s victory in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Monday accused the government of shutting down a TV channel financed by him. Speaking at a debate on ‘Do liberals stifle debate’ on the last day of Jaipur Literature Festival, he said, “I’m trying to finance a channel, to set up a channel called Harvest. Now we’ve been trying to get a licence, (but) this government doesn’t want to give us a licence. We got a licence ultimately. Then this afternoon, suddenly it was shut down. They called up TataSky and said don’t put this channel on air. We’ve been trying to persuade TataSky (to) allow us to come on air. This is all happening…I’m talking about how dissent is stifled, how people are not allowed to speak, how people are not allowed freedom of speech — as you

In Delhi, sources said the BJP has offered the Sena half of the 48 Lok Sabha seats from Maharashtra — in 2014, the BJP had contested from 26 and the Sena 22.

Polls coming, Shiv Sena signals it is ready to deal with BJP Mumbai

After years of bitterness, starting with the last Assembly polls in Maharashtra that they fought separately in October 2014, the BJP and the Shiv Sena appear to be moving closer to each other with just a few months to go for the Lok Sabha elections. In Delhi, sources said the BJP has offered the Sena half of the 48 Lok Sabha seats from Maharashtra — in 2014, the BJP had contested from 26 and the Sena 22. In Mumbai, Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray chaired a meeting of his party’s MPs where he is said to have expressed the wish that he wanted a “personal bond with Narendrabhai (Narendra Modi)”. Speaking to news agancy, Sena leader Sanjay Raut said any deal had to be based

on the principle that the BJP is the “big brother in Delhi (Lok Sabha) and the Sena is the big brother in Maharashtra”. “We are not bothered about what you (BJP) do in Delhi, but you have to acknowledge our leadership in Maharashtra… The number of seats comes only after these two points are accepted by both sides,” he said.

Kejriwal and Sisodia were speaking at the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in New Friends Colony while inaugurating construction work for 11,000 new classrooms across around 250 Delhi government schools.

Arvind Kejriwal to parents: If you love your kids, vote AAP, not Modi New Delhi

Addressing school students and parents in Delhi Monday, which was also live-streamed to at least 700 city schools, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed for votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and asked parents to choose between “deshbhakti” and “Modibhakti”. “If you ask people who they’ll vote for, they say Modiji. If you ask them why, they say because they love Modiji. Now decide whether you love your children or whether you love Modiji. If you love your children, vote for those who are working for your children. And if you don’t love your children, vote for Modiji… Modi has not built a single

school for you. You can either do deshbhakti or Modibhakti. It’s not possible to do both,” said Kejriwal. Echoing his remarks, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said: “Someone told me that they will vote for Modi in the elections… because woh achhe lagte hai…I told them that if you love your children, vote for those who are building schools for them. So I’m telling all parents, and asking

all children here to go home and ask their parents whether they love you or not. If they say that they love you, tell them ‘vote for those who are building schools for us’.” Kejriwal and Sisodia were speaking at the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in New Friends Colony while inaugurating construction work for 11,000 new classrooms across around 250 Delhi government schools.

While Congress and JD(S) leaders have jousted in private ever since the two parties joined hands to form the government in Karnataka last year, they refrained from making direct attacks, in keeping with their “coalition dharma’’.

Miffed Kumaraswamy threatens to quit, Congress says ‘full faith’ in him gns, Bengaluru

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy threatened to resign on Monday, after a Congress MLA — in the first direct attack by the coalition partner — criticised his governance. Seeking to control the damage, the Congress ordered its state unit to issue a showcause notice to the MLA. Congress general secretary K C Venugopal, who is in charge of party affairs in the state, said the party high command has “full faith” in Kumaraswamy and the state government. On Sunday, Congress MLA S T Somashekhar, a loyalist of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said: “The

coalition government has completed eight months but has not released funds for the development of Bangalore. As Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah’s contribution to Bangalore was huge’’. He said he wished Siddaramaiah was the Chief Minister again. Somashekhar, who was recently appointed chairman of the Bangalore Development Authority, was speaking at an event organised by the Kuruba community.

MoS Hegde on Karnataka Cong chief, wife: Guy who ran behind a Muslim lady gns, Bengaluru

UNION MINISTER of State for Skill Development Ananth Kumar Hegde, who had urged Hindu youths to target those from other communities who elope with Hindu girls, clashed with Karnataka Congress chief Dinesh Gundu Rao on social media Monday over the latter’s marriage to a Muslim. Responding to Rao, who questioned his credentials as a minister and MP after he called to remove the hand that “has touched a Hindu girl”, Hegde posted on his Twitter handle: “I shall definitely answer this guy @dineshgrao’s queries, before which could he please reveal himself as to who he is along with his achievements? BJP eyes three state polls with Lok Sabha 2019 New Delhi

In a bid to maximise its electoral gains, the BJP’s national leadership is likely to opt for Assembly polls in Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand along with the Lok Sabha polls this year, party sources told news agancy. The top leadership’s assessment — that simultaneous polls in these states could be their best bet — has been conveyed to the party’s state leaders, sources said. While the BJP leadership in Maharashtra and Jharkhand are keen to complete their terms, a section of leaders in Haryana believe that going with the Lok Sabha polls would give them the advantage, sources said. Assembly polls in Maharashtra and Haryana are due in October, while the term of the Jharkhand Assembly ends in December. A final decision will be taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah, sources said.

Guess he hasn’t learnt from our Hindu scriptures. Time hasn’t run out, he can still try and become a more dignified human.” He also retweeted a post on Hegde by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi: “This man is an embarrassment

to every Indian. He’s unfit to be a Union Minister and deserves to be sacked.” Hegde’s remarks triggered a response from Rao’s wife, Tabu, too: “It appears I am a soft target for BJP leaders who are unable to politically take on my husband… I am a private person. A mother of two girls and a devout housewife.” “Yes. I was born a Muslim but we are proud Indians first,’’ she said, while calling for the BJP to refrain from “using” her “as a pawn in their cheap politics”. On Sunday, reacting to Hegde’s call on those who elope with Hindu girls, Rao had said: “All I can say for sure — it’s deplorable that such people have become ministers and have managed to get elected as MPs.”

Bail to Lalu Prasad, Rabri and Tejashwi in IRCTC scam case New Delhi

The Patiala House Court in Delhi on Monday granted bail to former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad, his wife Rabri Devi, son Tejashwi Yadav and others, in connection with a money laundering case in the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) scam case. However, Lalu will continue to be in jail in connection with the fodder scam cases against him. Special Judge Arun Bhardwaj granted relief to the accused upon furnishing of a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and a surety of similar amount while scheduling the next hearing for February 11. Lalu was given relief after he was produced before the judge through video conference from a Ranchi

jail, where he is lodged since December 2017, following his conviction in other cases, as he was unable to appear due to health reasons. While asking the accused not to tamper with evidence, the court also directed them to surrender their passports and asked them not to leave the country without prior intimation. Welcoming the order,

Tejashwi Yadav told reporters, “We are confident of getting justice. We trust the judiciary.” Alleging that they were being framed by the BJP, Tejashwi said even SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and BSP president Mayawati have come under the CBI’s scanner ever since the duo joined hands ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

A warning just before you click ‘pay now’

It was exciting to read that Barclays Bank has introduced a feature on its banking app that allows customers struggling with issues of addiction by putting a button within the app that will turn off payments to certain kinds of retailers especially those linked to gambling and alcohol. While the idea behind the Barclays app is more noble than curbing needless consumption-linked expenditure, why not consider something that will help us curb our indulgent spends too? Recently I had a brush with a rather large indulgent spend, which gave me several hours of guilt-filled regret. If only the “pay now" button had not been pressed. You be the judge. This Diwali break was a well-planned getaway for the family. All the bookings were done, paid for three months in advance. But as it happens with best laid plans, return travel arrangements got flipped unexpectedly. I was suffering from an eye infection and on the morning of the journey decided I couldn’t (or didn’t want to) endure the 11-hour train ride back to Mumbai. This meant last-minute flight tickets for a family of four. The dilemma: air fare for a flight less than 24 hours away doesn’t come cheap. That too for four seats. While we went ahead with it, the next 48 hours were spent deliberating on why we did it when it clearly was not an emergency. After relaying this story to a few others, I found solace in the knowledge that we weren’t alone when it came to indulging in avoidable, impulsive spends. No matter how much in advance you plan, invariably you get confronted by one or many unexpected spends which are often non-essential and almost always impulsive. Let’s distinguish this from an unavoidable expense like a medical emergency or when a relative needs money urgently; these are beyond control and usually not optional. A few months ago, when I shared my disbelief at having to spend ₹10,000-12,000 on doctor’s fees and blood tests for what turned out to be a non-specific viral infection, my husband shot me a look of equal disbelief—wondering how I could care about money more than his health. Nevertheless, it was easier to reconcile with this inflated but somewhat essential spend than with what we spent on the last-minute air tickets. The concern: too many impulsive spends can end up burning a serious hole in your pocket. The implicit assumption is that it is an easy spend—something you pick when you are out window shopping or that ₹400 jar of Italian pesto paste or a click on Amazon just because the advertisement kept showing up on the social media site you visit every half an hour. The easier it is to do, faster the spends multiply, but can you justify them later when the credit card bill arrives or do you vow each month not to over-spend on non-essentials next month? One way to manage this is doing a quick mental math; try to relate your pile of savings to the amount you are about to indulge in. Putting a limit in place may work. Say, the aggregate amount you are over-spending is up to 0.2% of your savings or even up to 0.5% for some larger indulgences, then you know - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara it is easier to absorb. Editor

Emraan Hashmi: Solo films are easy to make because there are no flying egos Mumbai

Emraan Hashmi has preferred to star in solo lead films since the beginning of his career and the actor says the decision came from the "greed" of being able to showcase the complete arc of his characters. The 39-year-old actor, who made his debut in 2003 with multi-starrer "Footpath" and went on to deliver solo hits like "Murder", "Jannat", "Awarapan", "Raaz 2" among others, said it is easier to make a solo film as there are no "flying egos" on the sets. "I'm greedy and selfish. I get more time in a solo film to play an entire arc. Not that I haven't done

ensemble films but only a few. But what happens (in ensembles) is that the screen time gets divided.

You don't have much time to play that whole character arc. So it comes out of selfishness,"

Emraan told reppoter."These times are the toughest to make an ensemble films... It's more to do with ego management of actors on board. Four stars or five stars and everyone has to be given their due. So it becomes tough for the producer. Solo films are easy to make because there are no flying egos," he added. Following his initial success, Emraan went on to star in similar projects and the actor said he picked up whatever was being offered without taking the scripts in consideration. "Early on I was doing films which were just coming to me. Scripts were choosing me, rather than me choosing the scripts.

India registered a comfortable victory against New Zealand in the third ODI in Mount Maunganui on Monday as the visitors won the encounter by seven wickets to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the fivematch series. Kohli and Co. sent out a loud and clear message

ahead of the 2019 World Cup by dominating the Black Caps across all fronts. While the bowlers did much of the damage to restrict the Kiwis to 243 in 49 overs, Rohit Sharma (62) and skipper Virat Kohli (60) hit half-centuries to complete the chase with ease. Here is a small story from earlier this season that tells us about the importance of Sheldon Jackson’s immensely responsible hundred and the influence of Cheteshwar Pujara in restraining him during the chase of 279 that put Saurashtra into the Ranji Trophy finals for the second time in four years.

In a game against Mumbai at Wankhede Stadium, after reviving Saurashtra from a top-order collapse, the 32-year old Jackson was restless near the end of the second day’s play. New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor on Monday said losing three matches in a row was a bitter pill to swallow but admitted his team could not match all-round prowess of a far superior India. India beat New Zealand by seven wickets in the third ODI on Monday to take a series-clinching 3-0 lead. “It is tough to swallow 3-0 loss. But we have to give credit to the Indians. They have been far too good in all the three matches. India put us under pressure for a long period of time and got wickets at crucial times,” Taylor said at the post-match press conference. “India are a step up in opposition. They won key moments and put us under pressure. We could not just capitalise when we were on a semi-dominant position. We were three-four wickets down and 20 overs to go and long way behind the game. Alvaro Morata has fond memories of the time he was a ball boy at Atletico Madrid’s old Vicente Calderon Stadium. So much so that he still owns one of the vests he used to wear during matches. “Every time I see a ball boy, I see myself in him,” the striker said. “And when I was not a ball boy, I was in the stands watching Atletico. I used to dream of one day being on the field and playing.” The dream is coming true for Morata. Atletico signed him on Monday to an 18-month loan from Chelsea, ending his miserable stay in English football following a club-record move from Real Madrid for $75 million. The 26-year-old Spaniard passed his medical exam on Sunday in Madrid. Morata is returning to the club where he also started playing as a child. “I’m very happy and proud to be here,” he said. “I can’t wait to start practicing with my teammates and to start playing.”

We have to get on to the business and hopefully we can bounce back in the last two matches,” he said.

Gujarat tribals hold rally to protest infrastructure development around Statue of Unity

India must build the capacity to make its G20 presidency in the future a success Ahmedabad In 2022, India will be host to the G20, or Group of 20 nations, the world’s most influential economic multilateral forum. It is the agenda-setting forum that develops and guides rules of global economic governance. The G20 leaders-level dialogue came into being during the western financial crisis of 2008, when the large developing economies including India and China, helped fund the G8 countries out of the

crisis. The G20 is unique. Here, developing countries can display their political, economic and intellectual leadership on a par with the most powerful countries. The G20’s rotating presidency ensures that no one country dominates the agenda. Instead, the G20 host sets an annual agenda, wielding vast direct and indirect influence on nations’ economies. Is India ready for this leadership? Does it have a clear global financial agenda? Does the country have the capacity to lead

At present, there are over 900 Christians in our village. There are 70 tribal houses, out of which 12 families have converted to Christianity. On every Sunday morning, Christian priests from different neighbouring districts come and preache Christianity, and lures innocent tribals to get converted into Christianity,” said Jayanti Mistry, the deputy sarpanch of the village.

Ahmed Patel spent Rs 18 lakh on MLAs’ entertainment, bribed them: BJP challenger SS NEWS, Ahmedabad

In an affidavit filed by Balwantsinh Rajput in the Gujarat High Court, which is conducting a trial on petition filed by him challenging Congress leader Ahmed Patel’s election to the Rajya Sabha in 2017, the BJP leader has accused the MP of paying “gratification” to his party’s MLAs who were not inclined to support him in the polls. In the 23-page affidavit submitted to the High Court on Monday, Rajput alleged that Patel spent Rs 18 lakh “on entertainment of these Congress MLAs during their stay in Bangalore”. “Members of Congress party were not inclined to support him (Patel),” he alleged, referring to media reports. “They (44 Congress MLAs) were also paid huge amounts by respondent no. 1 (Patel) or his agent or at his direction to concerned parties as gratification for casting their

first preference vote for him which they accepted,” the BJP leader further alleged. Congress MLAs were moved to Bengaluru in Karnataka ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat after some of the Congress MLAs, including Balwantsinh Rajput quit the party to join the ruling BJP. Rajput was nominated by the BJP against Ahmed Patel for the three Rajya Sabha seats from Gujarat during the 2017 polls. In the elections, apart from Patel (Congress), BJP president Amit Shah and Union minister Smriti Irani were elected. Rajput’s affidavit claimed that the money spent on Ahmedabad-Bengaluru flight tickets of 44 MLAs had been transferred to the account of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee, and from there to a branch of a private bank “at the instance and with the consent of Patel”.

UAE handed out gender balance awards: All went to men

Stephen Miller, who has pushed Trump to adopt stricter immigration policies, is quoted as saying, "I would be happy if not a single refugee foot ever again touched American soil," according to Cliff Sims, a former White House communications aide. Washington The author of a new tell-all book about the White House under President Donald Trump says one of Trump’s top policy advisers spoke dismissively about refugees. Stephen Miller, who has pushed Trump to adopt stricter immigration policies, is quoted as saying, “I would be happy if not a single refugee foot ever again touched American soil,” according to Cliff Sims, a former White House communications aide and author of “Team of Vipers: My 500 Extraordinary Days in the Trump White House,” due in stores Tuesday. The Associated Press obtained a

copy Monday. Miller did not respond to an emailed request for comment. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said during a rare televised briefing Monday, “I’m not aware of any statement like that that Stephen Miller has ever made.” The White House has reviewed Sims’ book but has tried to avoid being drawn into public discussion to avoid bringing more attention to Sims’ accounts. Sims writes that any time a refugee or immigrant committed a “gruesome” crime, Miller would walk over to the White House press office to demand that press releases be issued about the cases.

abu dhabi Eager to promote itself as making strides on women’s rights, the United Arab Emirates on Sunday announced the winners of its Gender Balance Index awards, with the ruler of Dubai posing for pictures with the government officials collecting the accolades. They were all men. The irony wasn’t lost on social media users, who accused the Emiratis of tone deafness. “I’m sorry to be the one to

tell you, but you forgot to invite women,” Rianne Meijer, a Dutch journalist, wrote on Twitter. Others called the awards parody, satire or just “a joke. In reality, just one of the four awards announced on Sunday, for promoting gender equality in the workplace, was for an individual; the other three were for government agencies. But what resonated online was the visual impression created by having only men, all high-ranking Emirati officials, be the ones to receive them.

With exactly two months until Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29, there is no agreement yet in London on how and even whether to leave the world’s biggest trading bloc after May’s plan was rejected by an overwhelming majority in parliament. On Tuesday, lawmakers will debate and vote on May’s next steps, with some hoping to gauge the level of support for alternatives to her deal and others even seeking to wrestle control of the process from government. It is not a

rerun of the January 15 vote on whether to approve May’s Brexit deal, but a chance to discover what sort of changes would be required to win the support of parliament, so the prime minister can try to renegotiate the agreement in Brussels. At the centre of many proBrexit lawmakers’ concerns is the Irish “backstop”, an insurance policy aimed at preventing a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and the British province of Northern Ireland.
